Hinch in the morning...
« on: August 23, 2016, 10:09:31 am »
Just happened to catch Hinch on the radio this morning...a few highlights:

Gurriel will start at 3B tonight to keep his bat in the lineup, but will pretty much DH the rest of the way once they get back to playing AL teams.  May try him in the outfield this offseason.

Doesn't think Valbuena will be back this season.

Is not optimistic McCullers will be back this season, but it's still possible.

Likely to be a few call-ups next week...another catcher, a couple of bullpen arms and possibly a few "reward" call-ups.

The Astros have better than a puncher's chance at the wild card, but will have to seriously nut up in the next two weeks.  He's optimistic, obviously.

He's the manager, but I do not see how he takes Bregman off of 3B. he has been outstanding. maybe OF puts too much strain on a hamstring?
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

He said Bregman would play LF tonight, and it's only because he wanted to keep Gurriel's at bats coming, and didn't have the DH available.  But Bregman is his third baseman, now and for the foreseeable future.  Made it sound like Valbuena is "bye bye" this offseason, but didn't come out and say it directly.

Surprised that the need to keep Gurriel's ABs coming outweighs Teoscar's hot bat.

Nevermind, I think I assumed too much.  Maybe Teoscar moves to center.

I felt a great disturbance in the Force... as though a dozen pitchers cried out at once...

So Bregman at 3rd, Gurriel at DH, Marisnick in CF, and Teoscar in Left.

Works.

I'm completely cool with that too.

I was surprised he didn't mention Gurriel playing some 1B, as he mentioned that was a spot that needed addressing, though he did indicate Reed was "here to stay".  He didn't sound all that convinced about it, however.

But for tonight I would leave Gurriel on the bench with no DH

Reed has shown some improvement.  And this team doesn't have many lefties.

Gurriel played just one game in left in the minors and got 0 chances.  Except for 2005, every game he played in the Cuban and Japan leagues were all in the infield.  I'm not sure if left will be an option this year for Gurriel

I also don't think he's going to get any better against AAA pitching.  Play him.

I think they agree with you. Hinch said he is here to stay.
