Roster moves
« on: August 03, 2016, 12:26:54 pm »
So Hoyt is taking Gregerson's spot on the roster
Musgrove was suppose to take Feldman's, now might be McCullers.
Maybe Rodgers next to take Feldman's old spot
And Reed is up to take someone's spot.  Possibly via a short 3 game hiatus for Fister then either Tucker or White.  Or possibly Marwin to DL

McCullers news so far:

Luhnow Says Musgrove Would Fill In For McCullers If Necessary

This is so logical he shouldn't have had to say it.

Peacock has been improved lately but not any where as good as Rodgers.  Perhaps they feel Peacock will be better out of the pen than Rodgers. I don't think the 40-man would have been a factor.  There are 2 spots available and Rodgers needs to be added this year anyways

I'm getting lost in all the moves over the last week or so, and I'm missing at least one.  Who else should be on the "off the 25" list?

Off the 25
Feldman
Valbuena
McCullers (presumably)
Fister (for a few days)
Worth (was this for Bregman?)

On the 25
Tucker
Musgrove
Hoyt
Peacock
Reed
Bregman

Brownie says he's been told not to pick up a ball for two weeks. So that sounds like the best we could hope for is to have him back in four weeks or so. My guess is that we've see the last of him for this season.

Fuck. This season is unraveling in a hurry. And after it spent all that time re-raveling from the initial unraveling.

I'm really getting anxious to see Gurriel. He seems like a guy who knows how to take a professional AB. Maybe he can also encourage Correa to swing the goddam bat when the game is on the line and fastballs are being thrown over the plate.

If you're desperate for some optimism, like me, Kemp was hitting .325/.372/.500 over his last 10 games with 4 2B and a HR. At this point what've they got to lose by putting him out there in LF and see if he can get on base a little?

I really like Kemp cause he generally provides a tough AB, a talent in short supply on this team and badly needed, IMO.  However, it's no secret that positional placement is tough for Kemp in this lineup.

If he can stand out in left field like a stump, he won't be any more of a liability there than Tucker is.

They went to a 7 man bullpen with Gregerson's injury.  This brings it back to an 8 man pen as they've had most of the year.

Pardon me while I recap all the personnel moves/news today (which are covered in twenty different threads):

  • Kevin Chapman back to the minors after his 26th man utilization in game #2 of yesterday's doubleheader
  • Preston Tucker to the DL with a strained right shoulder
  • Teoscar Hernandez up from Fresno to take Tucker's spot on the roster
  • Jake Marisnick is day to day because of a "tweaked" right groin which is why Teo is in CF tonight
  • Colby Rasmus, who of course was already on the DL (retroactive to Aug 5), is not expected back til Sept after having surgery on the ear cyst
  • Luke Gregorson has been activated off the DL
  • Ken Giles goes to the paternity list

That about it?

I wonder how long Tucker's been dealing with shoulder issues.  That could explain why he's been terrible over his last 10 games.

I guess they need somebody to serve as potential mop-up fodder for a few days until Tyler White's arm has had enough time to rest.

I didn't get to see much of Hoyt, but wasn't he pretty good except for a couple rough outings?

Remember Jesus Alou being called out of the 1st base coaching box to pinch-hit a double vs. the Reds in '79 I think, to win a crucial game, and he patted Morgan on top of the head (ala Benny Hill w/the little bald guy) and Little Joe got pissed.....yeah,that was great.

I heard that surgery is likely the outcome from this setback.  He is likely done for the season.
Hinch confirmed this today, not cool.

Send Musgrove down until the deadline then they get an extra bat until rosters expand?

He let a ball drop right beside the Crawford Boxes because he didn't realize it wouldn't be out there. Hadn't seen that one before.

love how folks gauge "intensity" watching TV.

sample of criticism I read: does not hustle, late getting to fly balls (even when he catches them), does not hit cutoff men. he badly misread the fly ball Biz mentioned, which Hinch attributed to inexperience.

Colby will be an upgrade even if Teoscar were meeting GZ standards.

I hope the timing he gets back is more in line with early in the year Rasmus.  Middle of the year Rasmus should not get playing time over Hernandez, IMO.

Rasmus is a potential game changer. Hernandez has not shown to be the same. Given how little time is left in the season, this seems to be  A prudent move. It will be pretty clear within less than a week if Rasmus will not contribute offensively and he is sure to be an upgrade defensively.

Bullshit, he's hardly a train wreck as a defender.   He's made a few poor throws and misplayed a ball and some want to portray him as some shitshow in the outfield.

He was considered a mediocre defender in the minors.  He'll take poor routes to the ball but his speed can fix some of it. Flippant isn't the type of adjective I've ever heard used but could stand to mature as a player.

Good grief, you really have it in for the kid.

I recall Springer catching a lot of shit for his defense from some folks on here when he first came up. That has turned out okay.

I have not seen him in MLB. My opinion comes from riding the bus and feedback from people more knowledgeable than I. He has always been terrible in the field. Many have had successful MLB careers with questionable fielding skills, and he may turn out to be one of them. I do not "have it in for him", I just appreciate good fielding (both skill and attitude) and I find them missing here.

At least that's when he heard about it. SP's are well known to keep quiet about aches and pains hoping they'll sort out over time.  Plus, it's notoriously hard to tell the difference between typical between-the-starts aches and pains and a more serious issue developing over time unless there's some catastrophic failure.

Peacock being named the sub for Keuchel made me curious how Scott Feldman was doing with the Jays. He's got a 6.92 ERA and has allowed 20 hits in 13 IP (all in relief), for what it's worth.

Of course, the Astros also have Devenski and Rodgers as plausible alternatives to Peacock.

I was likely unclear in my post. I agree this is a recent development. Rather than something that was the cause of this season sucking for him it was the result of this season sucking for him. But that is obviously WAS. I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

I guess that's not too surprising, since even a moderate hammy is probably worth 2 weeks. I just hope this isn't one of those "we have to reattach the muscle" things.

Saying someone who has made  an MLB roster even for one day "sucks" is flat wrong.
Okay let me rephrase that. I don't believe he is a big league caliber player.

I guess that was the right move, given his salary.

Jon Singleton has been placed on outright waivers to remove him from the 40 man roster.

Nolan Fontana placed on waivers and claimed by the Angels.

40-man currently stands at 37 pending the Reddick signing becoming official.

he sure could have supplied a lot to this club with his LH power bat in the middle of the lineup. Maybe Reed can get it going.

With the release of Singleton we can close the book on the Pence deal. The original deal was in return for Zeid, Cosart, Santana and Singleton. It looked like it could produce an everyday RFer, 1B, and a starting pitcher. Luhnow flipped Cosart, with Kiki Hernandez, for Marisnick, Martes, Moran and a 2015 comp pick.
Santana was included in the deal for Gomez and Fiers. So, essentially Pence for Marisnick, Moran, Martes, Fiers and about a year of Gomez and whomever the comp pick was.

Singleton hasn't been released. He was outrighted off the 40-man, and assigned to AAA Fresno.

But your larger point is the same. At the time, and for a while after, many avid Phillies fans were probably a bit glum that their dum-dum GM had to give up a future power-hitting RF, All-Star 1B, and hard-throwing SP for 1 1/2 years of Pence. It's still theoretically possible that any of those 3 could blossom into something, but it's now 5 years later and it hasn't happened.

Flipping Cosart was really the key.

The timing was quite good on that one.

And for the record, I wasn't trying to be critical of the deal Wade made for Pence. It looked very good at the time based on the scouting reports. Luhnow may have salvaged it with the flip of Cosart. If Martes reaches a #1 starter role, admittedly a leap of faith, it will be a good return if a delayed one.

And I'd still like to hear from the folks who pilloried Singleton (and the Astros) for signing that $10MM contract a few years ago.

No, I knew you weren't, and neither am I. It was probably the best deal that could've been made without a time machine; and one of the few high points of Wade's tenure.

It is now a good example of the high failure rate of even "blue chip" top 100-type prospects.

Singleton just turned 25, but given the steep decline in his AAA numbers, it would certainly take a dramatic turnaround for him to make any All-Star team.

The Singleton signing was one of the more obnoxious moments in that 3ish year battle of Astros vs media (mainly Drellich), and the Astros have been proven right in every situation over the long run...even though they technically lost the Singleton deal.  But the point is that it was not "taking advantage" of a player.

If I had to rank the battles in order of aggravation, I would put it as:

1) Aiken fiasco - so fucking fitting he literally got hurt in his first outing of pro baseball.
2) Drellich's article of anonymous sources saying the Astros were treating the players based on their stats - the Astros surprisingly made the playoffs in 2015 way ahead of schedule.
3) Singleton contract - ended up being the best decision of Jon SIngleton's life.

I feel like I'm missing others but those are off the top of my head.
