T1:

Martin...full count...strikes out swinging
Smith lines out softly to 2B
Cano walks
Cruz strikes out swinging

No score

The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

B1:

Springer grounds out 5-3
Valbuena...3-0...3-1...3-2...walks
Altuve singles to LF, Valbuena to 2B
Correa bloops a rulebook double down the RF line....Valbuena scores, Altuve hast to stop at 3B...too bad as Altuve otherwise scores easily
Rasmus strikes out swinging
Gomez doubles off the LF wall...Altuve scores, Correa scores
Reed grounds out 3U

Astros grab a 3-0 lead

Ok, it's only fair to point out that the shift turned a would-be single into an out there.

I started to feel slightly more optimistic that the Astros might score some runs tonight once I learned that LeBlanc was one of the AA harlequin troupe the Astros gave starts to during one of the seasons that required brown out level of consumption for the viewership.

Not really the shift, Altuve was just really really deep.

Wow, I must have been browned out, too. I don't remember him at all. But there it is at baseball-reference.com: 4 games in 2013, 6.1 IP, 9 H, 10 R, 5 ER, 5 BB (1 IBB), for a craptastic ERA+ of 60. That's really bad.

Well, it's hard for me to feel real positive about Fiers. I realize he has spurts, but I don't see the repertoire needed for a playoff team.

Needs some runs here to arrest the flow.

Up until that inning, Fiers had been on a decent roll as a 5th starter.  Last time out throwing 6 shut out innings only allowing 4 base runners.

When a 5th starter you are as good as your last start.

I don't think he's gutless.  I think he just lacks talent.

Gattis...3-0...pops out F2 right over the plate
Castro bounces a rulebook double off of Tal's Hill...another tough break as Castro would otherwise have an easy triple

That's all for LeBlanc...Karns in

Springer...3-0...3-1...3-2...walks
Valbuena grounds in to 4-6-3 double play

5-4 still

I don't think he's gutless.  I think he just lacks talent.

To me Mark Appel was Holt 2.0.

Maybe it is because they both pissed me off.  Appel never made it to Houston so I won't use him in a comparison.  Fiers just seems weak and maybe that is because he lacks talent.

With a guy like Fiers you know the other team will be hacking away, you just hope they hit them at someone and not out of the park.

Before tonight, Fiers was giving up a .344/.393/.578/.971 line while pitching with a lead.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

I can think of two recent occasions now, incl. tonight, in which he had to come out before 5 because he couldn't hold the lead.

I was impressed that Karns threw a fastball down the middle to correa on 2-0 and 2-1 after missing with two breaking balls, but then I realized that it's 2016 and all the pitchers watch game tape.

Gomez with a bunt single, moves to 2B as Karns throws it in to RF
Reed singles to LF, Gomez to 3B
Gattis hits one down the 3B line...Seager picks it, tries to go home and throws it wild...Gomez scores, Reed to 3B...scored a FC and an TE5
Castro strikes out swinging
Springer singles to LF, Reed scores, Gattis to 2B
Wild pitch...Gattis to 3B, Springer to 2B
Valbuena...infield in...quickly 0-2...strikes out swinging
Altuve draws an intentional walk
Correa takes a fucking 2-1 meatball right down the center of the plate...then lines out to RF

Wouldn't mind seeing Devenski moved to the rotation and Hoyt called up.

So do you go with usual late inning pitching rotation here and hope they find a run in the 8th or 9th, and then go to Feldman if it goes to extras?

B8:

Castro doubles off the LCF wall
Marisnick in to run for Castro
Springer strikes out swinging
Valbuena with another MONSTER drive into the upper tank!  Marisnick scores

Diaz out...Benoit Balls in...

Altuve grounds out 6-3
Correa doubles to LF
Rasmus strikes out...Platinum Sombrero

But...Astros take a 9-7 lead to the 9th

The club needs to inform the scoreboard operator not to update the inning to read 9th if gregorson is ever handed the ball for it again.

T9:

Gregerson in...

Marte grounds out 4-3
Martin...3-0...walks on four pitches
Smith walks on four pitches
Robertson in to run for Smith
Cano doubles off the LF wall on the first pitch, Martin scores, Marte to 3B
Cruz...infield in...strikes out swinging
Seager draws intentional walk to load the bases
Lee strikes out swinging

Astros finally win 9-8!

I don't like that walk.

Normally I don't like that either.  But Seager has owned Gregerson in his career, and Lee is a free swinging righty who struggles with sliders.

I would consider switching Gregerson and Giles at this point. If nothing else, it gives you an extra inning to recover from Gregerson's contribution. But Giles is still a bit of a roller-coaster ride, too.

As it turned out, Gregerson was the perfect guy to pitch to Cruz and Lee.  But they're lucky they still had a chance at that point.  There's no reason that either of those guys should have hit in the 9th.

Even when Gomez has started really helping, the sarcasm and negativity continues. He had a come to Jesus meeting when he went down. Give him credit for changing.

Gregerson scared the crap out of me tonight. Eight straight balls to pitch to Cano, Cruz, Lee.

Gomez was an MVP candidate in 2013 and 2014; the idea that he can't be a key piece on this team insane (especially preferring Marisnick).

It doesn't matter because you already think I'm crazy, but...I've said it before and I'll say it again...I like having Marisnick on this team.  I can't put my finger on it or explain it, but I like the makeup of the team with him.

That said, I'll certainly give Gomez credit where credit is due.  He's played much better lately, and had a terrific game last night.

I think a lot of the value for Marisnick is on the bench.  Last night him putting on catching gear was funny.  I think he keeps the team loose.  I find value in that.  Plus, he's great on the bases and can play a pretty good outfield.

Gomez isn't a bad ballplayer, and he's played better lately, but he strikes me as someone who is a clubhouse cancer. In my opinion, he doesn't play the game the right way. Clubhouses are very fragile things. It only takes one bad actor to screw up the works. I didn't like the trade for him when it was made, even if Gomez had been performing at 2013-14 levels because of his character. I like Marisnick on the bench as a fourth outfielder too.

Gomez has played better lately, but he looked like an idiot last night prancing and preening after he scored and bumping into the catcher that was trying to, you know, play baseball.

It is easier to look past the latter when he is actually hitting his weight (barely).

in the opinion of his teammates, everywhere he has played, he is the direct opposite of a clubhouse cancer or a bad actor. he is very popular in the clubhouse. there is absolutely nothing wrong with his character. I get it you do not like the hot dogging he does, but watch Altuve or Correa every now and then.

Having a guy like Gomez is a new experience for the Astros. I don't remember ever having a flamboyant character like him. Perhaps I'm just overlooking some but the Astros have always been a business-like bunch. That is probably, as much as anything, what I found difficult about him. Particularly when he was sucking eggs. I never had any feeling about whether the team liked him or not.

uhm, JOSE LIMA?

Next subject.

Gomez is the absolute opposite of a clubhouse cancer.  Where in the world do some of you come up with this stuff?  His teammates have been pretty vocal about how much they love the guy.

Marisnick was a better hitter when he played regularly, and because I like him I'd like to see him getting at-bats.  I'm glad Gomez is out there, and I generally like his enthusiasm.

Agreed Marisnick would be a better hitter with more at bats, but he's not going to ever be a good hitter.  I think he's a better outfielder than Gomez, and gets to balls that Gomez does not, so I think they would save more runs on defense with Marisnick.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

uhm, JOSE LIMA?

Next subject.

Gomez is the absolute opposite of a clubhouse cancer.  Where in the world do some of you come up with this stuff?  His teammates have been pretty vocal about how much they love the guy.

Um2, Joaquin Andujar.

I did not like all the dabbing early in the year either, but after he went down and got told clearly what must change, he has been appropriate. Do not talked to me about bat flipping unless you are prepared to say all bat flippers, which includes Springer, are douchebags.

Of course.  He's just slightly worse than Valbuena in watching when he should be running.   There might be others I have missed, but they too should be running.

in the opinion of his teammates, everywhere he has played, he is the direct opposite of a clubhouse cancer or a bad actor. he is very popular in the clubhouse. there is absolutely nothing wrong with his character. I get it you do not like the hot dogging he does, but watch Altuve or Correa every now and then.

There are a couple of ways a player can be a clubhouse cancer. He can be disruptive, which Gomez doesn't seem to be. I think that Gomez is a cancer because of his hot dog ways. He's now an older player, and I don't like the example he sets for younger players. I don't think that he plays the game the right way, but that's just me.

I was more annoyed by his shtick when he was one of the worst players in baseball. I like him, personally, and judging by the quality of play, I don't see how you can indict him for being a bad influence.

Reed looked pretty good around the bag last night and he had a good vertical on the Cruz chopper.  He has to be pushing 300 real hard. I'm guessing that multiple people (agent , GM, wife) have told him that he needs to drop at least 50 in order to maximize his talent.

The quality of his play is irrelevant to me; it's how he plays that annoys me. He showboats, admires (sometimes shots that aren't worth admiring), etc. Any pitcher in the good old days would have given him a shave if he pulled some of the crap that he pulls. He's on our team, so I wish him all the best and am glad that he's been much better lately. However, I don't just give him a license to be an a-hole with the other team either. Play the game the right way. That's all I'm saying.

I think it's just the way the game is now.  It evolves.  The younger players like to have fun and express themselves in ways the previous generation did not.  We (yes, i'm talking to myself as well) can either accept it and move on, or piss and moan about it like crotchety old men.  I mean, Springer dances like a fool in the dugout after everything he does.  Just because it's not on the field doesn't mean he's invisible to the other team or the fans.  Nobody complains about it.  I'm just not going to worry about all the bat flipping and all that jazz anymore.  It's the game.  I accept it.

Good post. Springer is white.  So is Mark Fridrych (sp?) he was colorful. Lima was a hot dog who did not play the game right.

There is a lot of prejudice in the game against so many Latin players. We hear it every ST.

Could be, but he does not identify or present as black. The discrimination point is valid. "Playing the game the right way" means something different in Latin America. Here among baseball lifers it often is code for prejudice.

Someone did a study on this recently, and found that a majority of the time, it was exactly this: white guys, like Brian McCann, getting all pissed off and violent toward Latino guys (like Gomez) for not playing the game "the right way."

I mean, didn't Willie Mays rub some people the wrong way every time he made a basket catch? It's the same thing, really.

No actions. Appearance. The rank and file person who does not know his family history will think he is white.

Wow, I knew Springer was bi-racial the first time I saw him after being drafted. I thought it was kind of neat because I have a couple of nephews who are mixed. And since then I have seen his parents on the field at least once and being interviewed in the stands on multiple occasions, most recently on Fathers Day. He has two sisters too. I'm sure he identifies as the child of a white mom and a black father. Bi-racial couples are common now-a-days. Why I believe the president was the product of such a union. None of which has anything to do with baseball playing.

Also, I have grown to not dislike Carlos Gomez, I wish he was as good as billed. And I got no problem with bat flips. However, the conflict between him and Brian McCann wasn't a random event and it had nothing to do with his ethnicity. Carlos behavior prior to hitting the home run was that of a shit ass, his behavior running around the bases after he hit that home run was that of a shit ass. Carlos even had his agent write a sincere apology for him. Check the tape.
