A few roster notes (other than 2016 draftees and players who had previously made 2016 debuts):

RHP Enrique Chavez--signed out of Mexico in 2014, he pitched primarily in the GCL last season where he was a tandem starter.

RHP Dylan James--NDFA out of West Texas A&M in 2014 who saw (limited) action in the GCL and at Greeneville last year.

RHP Hector Perez--20-year old out of the DR who was so effective in his debut in the DSL last summer the Astros moved him up to the GCL mid-season.

RHP Erasmo Pinales--another Dominican pitcher, he spent 2 years in the DSL before a successful stateside debut at Greeneville last year (33 Ks and 10 Ws in 32.2 IP) as part of the tandem.

RHP Carlos Sierra--21-year old Cuban making his pro debut. Signed last December.

LHP Ben Smith--drafted in the 17th round back in 2014 out of Coastal Carolina, Smith will be making his professional debut. Recovery from TJS followed by treatment for cancer delayed the start of his career. Good luck to him.

RHP Josue Uribe--not the most successful of seasons statistically in the DSL last year, still Astros brass thought enough of the 21-year old Dominican to bring him stateside for a handful of appearances in late August in the GCL.

LHP Framber Valdez--22-year old out of the DR making US debut after struggling with control in the DSL last year.

C Kevin Martir-2015 draftee out of Maryland (18th round) who was used at Greeneville last season where he hit just .218/.355/.234.

INF/OF Marcos Almonte--signed to a modest bonus several years ago, spent most of last year in the DSL before moving up to the GCL and hitting .299/.321/.364 in 19 games. 20 years old.

2B Kolbey Carpenter--33rd rounder last year out of the U of Oklahoma, he's repeating the NY-Penn.

3B Randy Cesar--signed for $100K 5 years ago, the 21-year old hit .236/.327/.346 for the G-stros last year.

OF Brauly Mejia--21-year old from the DR put up a .283/.335/.428 slash line in the Appy in 2015. Signed 4 years ago.

OF Luis Payano--hit .243/.307/.379 in 36 games as a 19-year old for Greeneville last year.

Undoubtedly some of these guys will get bumped down a level or two as more 2016 draftees sign and get assigned to the V-Cats.

A rehabbing Akeem Bostick is the starting pitcher for tomorrow night's opener.

That's a groin injury that has kept him out since he last pitched April 21 with the JetHawks. Hurled 2-hit shutout ball over 6 innings last night (61 pitches, 48 strikes).

Impressive NYP debut tonight for the 6'3" 190 lb pitcher: 4 IP 2 H 0 R 3 W 6 K.

Very cool US professional debut for 21-year old Cuban Carlos Sierra: 6 IP 1 H 0 R 2 W 5 K. Particularly nice given that the 6'3" 195 lb righty last pitched (in games that counted) three years ago in the Serie Nacional.

Wild one last night. The V-Cats scored 4 in the top of the 17th to break a 9-inning scoreless streak, then hung on to win by 1 as bad defense contributed to a 3-run response.

It was obvious something was wrong when he was pulled after just 2 batters in his last start, but according to the Chron 4th-rounder Brett Adcock is out for the rest of the year with what is being reported as a knee injury.

That must be a break that required surgery.  The season still has 7 weeks left in it.  That is a long recovery time for a broken finger.

3B Randy Cesar batting .586 (17-29) over his last 8 games. Leads the NYP with a .389 BA. Good for him and hope it all continues, though his track record over his four previous minor league seasons didn't hint at this kind of success. Plus his K rate remains high and their hasn't been a whole lotta power to go along with it.

UH's Nick Hernandez off to a solid start, 1-0 3/3 in saves, 1.98 ERA.  13 IP, 4 BB, 15 Ks 12 Hits.

For Bubba:

You may have already seen it if you read WTHB but Jayne posted some information today about both Perez and Randy Cesar. Most interesting part was pitching coach Drew French noting the change to Perez's delivery which resulted in his FB going from 88-91 in spring training to now touching 97-98. That was a heckuva tweak.

BA highlights 'Cats CF Stephen Wrenn in their daily Prospect Report:

Quote
Stephen Wrenn, cf, Astros. Wrenn, whose draft stock took a hit after a down year at Georgia, has shrugged that off in his pro debut. Wrenn hit his ninth homer Saturday—by far the most in the short-season New York-Penn League—as Tri-City beat Staten Island (Yankees) 8-4. Wrenn’s swing is geared for power and that much is evident as he’s slugging .574.

Overall, he's hitting .292/.382/.569 with 18 BB & 36 K in 33 games. He's also 8 of 9 in SB attempts. Looking like a possible steal from the 6th round of this year's draft.

Interesting start for Tyler Britton as a professional. Now has 47 Ks and just 3 BBs in 29 IP (granted, a lot of that was at Greeneville) for the 23rd rounder who was a career reliever during his 4 years in college.

The re-up parade continues: Astros and V-Cats extend PDC thru 2018. Astros have been in TRC since the 2002 season. The only longer affiliations in Astros/Colt 45s history are AAA Tucson (17 years, 1980-1996), AA Columbus (21 years, 1970-1990) and previous NYP affiliate Auburn (19 years, 1982-2000).

RHP Abdiel Saldana (58 Ks vs just 9 walks combined in the Appy and NYP this season) bumped up to the Bandits while rehabber Tyson Perez and RHP Ricardo Castro are assigned to the V-Cats from the GCL and Greeneville, respectively.
