8th inning, game 4
« on: January 13, 2016, 12:16:36 pm »
Probably a lot of you have seen this already, and probably a lot of you don't want to, but I found it eased my pain a bit--though I'm not sure why. The excellent Sam Miller autopsies one of life's worst innings:

almost as painful as 1986. almost.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

Jim, I was 14 years old and I cried like a little bitch when Bass struck out.  I'm not sure I've ever been as high (Hatcher HR) and as low in that short of a timeframe.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

The 33 minutes between Berkman and Pujols comes close.

I have a book about the game called "The Greatest Game Ever Played." I still am not emotionally ready to read it.

Didn't Bass also hit a deep foul just before striking out? Just to make it that much more agonizing.
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

It's a great read.

I do not think so. I remember him swinging over sliders.

Suck it up and read it. I have. It may be cathartic in some ways.

I do not think so. I remember him swinging over sliders.

Bass saw six pitches, all of them sliders.  Keith Hernandez had told Orosco before Bass's at bat that if he threw Bass a fastball, there'd be a fight.  Bass laid off three, but swung and missed three.

I also remember Ashby missing the squeeze with Bass at 3B, which would have made it 4-0 in the first, and who knows...
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.
