Rasmus interviewed on MLB Network. He puts lotion on his hair before the game because if his hair isn't wet he gets too hot. He likes his hair. His mom likes his hair. His wife likes his hair.

I hope Carter settles down there at 1B. Nearly threw a ball away....might have cost a DP?

We're not going to get two on that

I don't think anyone thought we could get two in that playoff game against the braves. A good throw at least gets you a chance.

Crowd doesn't seem that loud on TV.  Maybe it's different in person.  I see everybody has those stupid damn "thunder sticks" which is probably the problem.

Don't see that everyday. Carlos has had some bad luck. I'm a bit worried about his decision to bunt there. Pain again after the swing and miss?

Bottom 2

Rasmus walks on a full count
Gattis reaches on a FC, 5-4
Gomez bunts, runs into it, is out. How do you score that? 1 unassisted? Ah, 2 unassisted.
Valbuena, facing a bizarre shift, Ks looking.

Scoreless after two.

The problem is, Castro has been a decent offensive player in the past. So it's not like he's always been a horrible 200 hitter.

Top 4

Cain parks the 10th pitch of the at bat onto the tracks in left.
Hosmer Ks swinging after a gift called second strike
Morales smokes a grounder under Valbuena's glove. E5.
Morales takes second on a wild pitch.
Moustakas rolls one to Altuve, Morales to third.
Perez walks on a full count. Strom to the mound.
Gordon pops to left.

Cows over Astronauts, 1-0.

Volquez is fucking dealing.

Our "Take hittable pitches, swing wildly at balls, and don't protect the plate with 2 strikes" approach is helping a little.

Bottom 4

Springer, reaching for an 0-1 pitch outside, grounds out to short.
CC Ks looking.
Rasmus walks again.
Gattis Ks on a slider two feet off the plate.

Still 1-0.

Top 5

Keuchel, needing a quick inning, gets Rios to fly out to right on the first pitch.
Ditto, he retires Escobar on a comebacker, 1-3.
"Sobriety" Zobrist doubles into left. Fuck a duck, it's Cain.
Cain intentionally walked after taking two unintentional balls.
Hosmer Ks swinging.

Gomez Ks swinging.
Valbuena walks.
Carter doubles! Valbuena to third.
Castro the Astro singles in two after looking awful on the previous two pitches--now 1-8 in the series, with two huge ribeyes.
Altuve spares Volquez any further labor, 6-4-3. But...

Ok boys  (and any ladies present).  My wife got us theater tickets months ago for tonight, and who knew the Astros would be playing in the ALDS at the same time (not that I could've gotten out of it anyway).  Keep up the good work, but I'm outa here.

At least I get to go to Brennan's first.

Morales grounds out 6-3 on a full count; nice play by Correa.
Moustakas doubles on a line into right. I think they've had baserunners every inning?
Perez flies out to center; Moustakas to third.
Gordon Ks swinging on Keuchel's 102nd pitch!

Pick up those bats again, boys!

Bottom 6

Springer *barely* doubles off Cain's glove in left-center--would've been grand larceny.
Bizarrely, Correa grounds out to second, advancing Springer. What was that?
Yost to the mound.
Rasmus IBB'd.
Fuck those noise-murdering thunderstick pieces of shit.
Gattis, impersonating a 1919 White Sox, Ks flailing on a full count. (Mark, please fix to your rage's content.)
Gomez line drive into center plates Springer! Situational AND clutch hitting in the same inning?
Duffy into pitch.
Marwin, pinch hitting for Valbuena, pops out on the first pitch to the short stop.

End of 6: 3-1 'Stros.

Keuchel still in. Crowd surprisingly sedate.
Rios walks on a full count.
Escobar grounds out 3 unassisted.
Zobrist out 2-3 on a bunt, trying for a hit. Fucking Cain. Rios on third.
Keuchel's mother is praying a lot.
Cain Ks swinging! Let that NOT have been the last batter of Keuchel's season, boys!

Bottom 7

Gentle Bear thrashes first pitch! Solo bomb to left! 3-3 on the night!
Castro pops to left. Out with Duffy, in with Hochevar.
Altuve pops out foul to third.
(Astros keep kneeling to the monarch pitchers.)
Springer Ks swinging.

Going to the eighth and up by 3.

Bottom 8

Correa singles to right.
Rasmus--I've never seen this--pops a fly off the roof in right. It's a towering single. Correa gets to second.
Gattis fouls out to first.
Gomez, really looking less than 100%, Ks swinging. Lowrie to pinch hit for Margo.
Lowrie pops out to center.
What a polite crowd in Houston, not trying to get in Hochevar's head.

Maybe that is the way the audio is mixed on the broadcast. Sometimes it is so loud you can't hear the announcers.
Post-game interview with Carter the reporter was talking about how loud it was. We need an on-scene report.

Castro has been really solid behind the plate today

post-game interview Keuchel said how much he loved throwing to Castro. Said he gets beat up back there when I'm pitching. Hopes he is my catcher for a long time.  also, Hinch praised his handling of pitchers in post-game.

I think they had the crowd volume turned down because of the stupid thunder sticks.  No one wants to listen to those for a game.

I saw a bunch of folks banging them but I didn't hear much coming through on the audio.

Exactly right. Gregerson may have sat too long during the bottom of the 8th. it was a long half-inning .

I don't know if I'd go for the Gregerson extended save again

I was kind of surprised by that, as Sipp has pitched really well lately.  All's well that ends well...but...yeah, it's probably best to have Gregerson start fresh in an inning.

Agreed. He had nothing in the 9th. Glad it worked out though.

The crowd still doesn't seem particularly excited.  If I'm listening to crowd  noise, I'd assume the Astros were blown out.

They must have turned the mix way down. You couldn't hear the PA, you couldn't hear the person next to you. My ears were still ringing when I got home.

Heard several accounts now that it was every bit as loud as 04-05, or louder. TV did no favors.

I had to listen the ESPN radio broadcast on a drive home from Aurora Illinois (swim meet).   I have to say, it was not unpleasant even though Jon Kruk was the color guy.   For whatever reason, he was really good on the radio.   Insightful comments from his playing career, didn't step all over the play-by-play, and was in general a pleasure to listen to.  Not sure if it was the fact that the Astros were winning that made me give him a pass or if he was actually useful on the radio.   Dan O'Brien did a fantastic play-by-play and I got a very good picture of the game overall.

Anyway, have to chime in on the Chris Carter comments.   Is there anyone out there with his stick that doesn't have the 10-cent head?    His base-running gaffes have been very frustrating lately.     It's good when he makes up for it with a bomb but man, seems he's been getting thrown out at 2nd and 3rd a lot recently.    His fielding is mostly pretty good but every once in a while, it goes south.    Just seems like he should be replaceable with someone who doesn't make as many mental mistakes.

OK.  TV sounded quiet as church.

Mrs. MM was in the concourse bringing our daughter back from the bathroom when Carter doubled in the fifth. She had to buy peanuts via hand signals because she and the cashier couldn't hear each other.

The TV feed offered none of the intensity that I expected. I was expecting my theater system to "light up" with crowd noise. It was oddly silent. Good to know that wasn't the case.

They must have a way of isolating the announcers.

Just another vote that it was super loud.  After the third strike to get Cain in the 9th, the whole place was vibrating.

By far, Carter's biggest defensive problem is his habit of exposing Correa to all sorts of perils when he throws to second base.

Watching the replays and the people in the stands it seems pretty clear that the mic's were suppressed.   That many people jumping up and down and yelling doesn't sound like a bored half-empty stadium.
