When things slow down a bit, can some post how Luhnow created this team. Where and how did these guys get to the Astros? I have been meaning to ask this all year.

Off the top of my head the starters from last night and starting pitchers:
Altuve - signed out of Venezuela (wade)
Springer - drafted 1st round (wade)
Correa - drafted 1st overall (luhnow)
Rasmussen - FA (luhnow)
Gattis - trade from Braves for Ruiz and Folty (luhnow)
Gomez - trade from Brewers with Fiers for a group of Astros prospects highlighted by Phillips (Luhnow)
Carter - trade with A's, also got Stassi and Peacock for Lowrie (Luhnow)
Valbuena - trade w/ Cubs also acquiring Straily for Dexter Fowler (luhnow)
Castro - drafted 1st round (Wade)

Keuchel - drafted in the 6th? round (Wade)
McHugh - claimed off waivers from Rockies (luhnow)
Kazmir - trade with A's this year, sent back prospects including catcher Nottingham (Luhnow)
McCullers - drafted in 1st supplemental round same year as Correa (Luhnow)
Fiers - Gomez trade mentioned above

Others:
Marisnick - acquired along with Colin Moran for Cosart from the Marlins (Luhnow; Cosart, Singleton, Santana were big parts of the Pence trade made by Wade)
Lowrie - signed as FA (luhnow)
Marwin - think Wade got him in a minor trade
Villar - Oswalt trade (Wade)
Gregerson - FA (luhnow)
Neshek - FA (luhnow)
Will Harris - claimed off waivers (Luhnow)
Sipp - FA (Luhnow)

I think Marwin was a Rule 5 guy. Maybe first/early Luhnow move?

Nice job, but I believe Sipp was a waiver claim from San Diego.

Marwin was signed as a MLFA by the Cubs in 2005, and drafted away by the Red Sox in the 2011 Rule 5 draft. He was then apparently immediately traded to the Astros in exchange for Marco Duarte.

Ah good catch! Thanks.
Did Rule 5 procedures still apply to him that year. I seem to remember him needing to stay on the 25-man roster and maybe being hidden on a lengthy DL stay that year, in order to keep him. I might be wrong though.

Still can't believe how big a coup the Correa+McCullers move was in that draft. Jim, in case you missed it, they got Correa to sign below slot (believe pundits mostly thought they should draft Buxton or Appel), and then used the savings to sign McCullers who dropped to the 41st pick (first round supplemental) because he wanted top dollar (signed him for about 12-13th pick money).

They also signed Ruiz for over slot value in that draft who was a key piece in the gattis deal.

You hit on a first rounder, cool. You also hit on a sup pick, damn. You also hit on a later pick, that's unbelievable! When you consider, 1 is gonna be one of the games best, 2 has a chance to be an ace or a great closer, and 3 a solid everyday player. That's a home run type of draft.

I was talking last night how the Fowler trade worked out well for both sides.

Fowler played in 156 games for the Cubs.  He hit .250/.346/.411 with 17 HR.  He made 9.5 million and accounted for a WAR of 2.2.  Not bad for the Cubs end.

Valbuena played in 132 games (28 at first, 97 at 3rd) He hit .224/.310/.438 with 25 HR  on the season but hit .270/.328/.430 in the second half.  And he has been hot in the last month.  Since September, he has hit .320/407/. 580! $4.2 million and 2.1 WAR.  The Cubs didn't need him with Bryant & Russell coming up.

Straily only pitched in four games in the Majors this year.  So not much value there other than AAA depth and he is just 26 so he will be with the org for a few years.  $505,000 and a WAR of -0.1.

So Fowler had a WAR of 2.2 and V & S had a combined of 2.0.  But the money the Astros saved on the trade allowed them to sign Rasmus to a one year deal for 8 Million.  In 137 games, he hit .238/.314/.475 with 25 HR with a 2.6 WAR.  He too got hot in September hitting .299/.405/.642 with 7 HR.  He played 40 games in RF, 41 in CF and 61 in LF.

To make room for Rasmus, the Astros designated Corporan and traded him to the Rangers for Akeem Bostic.  Corporan struggled with injuries and played in just 33 games.  He hit .178/.244/.299 with a WAR of -0.5.

Bostic (age 20) started at QC and was promoted after 8 games with a 1.50 ERA.  He pitched in 13 games in Lancaster with a 5.88 ERA.

So looking at all pieces of that deal, Astros gave up Fowler & Corporan ( combined1.7 WAR) and added Valbuena, Straily, & Rasmus (combined 4.6 WAR). Plus got a young arm in the deal.

So even though I think the Cubs are pleased with their end of the deal, The Astros have to be happy with how it worked out for them.

Always ready to go to a game.

Do the Astros resign Rasmus?  I've been thinking about this for the past couple of weeks.  If we don't resign him, do we get a draft pick?

I would love if they retained Colby. He's an odd bird but I like what he brings to the table.

I count five. Rasmus, Marisnick, Springer, Tucker and Gomez is signed through next year. I'd like to see him back too.

Rasmus has been great all year. He came with a reputation of being difficult to deal with but he has been a good team player and a good team mate. I think that he is on a one year contract. He will be hard to bring back unless they move Tucker, Gomez and/or Marisnick.

I don't think that you can over state the importance of his home run Tuesday. Tanaka had had a real good first fanning two and was ready to cruise. The first pitch of the second changed all that. Rasmus' shot wasn't just a home run, it was crushed,  the kind that makes the pitcher feel like he has been punched in the stomach. Tanaka never really got his feet under him after that.

I love that picture. Texted it to my wife yesterday as she gets a kick out of Rasmus' oft-greasy locks.

Rasmus has been a quality player but he is 29, made $8 m. this season, and would likely seek a multi-year deal.  The Valbuena and Rasmus deals show how Luhnow will spend some money on a veteran player with clear upside AND flaws, but not a long-term deal (though 3 years to Lowrie is puzzling).

I'm not sure rasmus knows what rasmus wants. He doesn't seem like the "plan ahead" type. More of "hey, that sounds like a good idea, I'll do that."
