Castro on 15-Day DL
« on: August 29, 2015, 03:27:05 pm »
Stassi recalled. Gattis taking bullpen.

Castro said quad was still sore, but getting treatment.

Can someone give us the lowdown on Stassi?  He has to throw better than Conger, right??
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Pretty good defensive catcher. Not sure his throw-out %. Has power with 13 HRs this year in 84 games. Ave low at .210 but I think Luhnow still has hopes for him as a pretty fair player.

Is he really a good defender?  My recollection was at his peak prospect status, he was considered a serviceable defender who could hit.

BA named him the Best Defensive Catcher in the A's system annually from 2009-12. In this year's Handbook, they said he's an average defender, handles pitchers well, good receiver, fringe-average arm. Both this year and last he's nailed 26% of AAA runners.

I'm guessing he'll platoon with Conger. His hitting line was vomit-inducing from April-June, but he put up a .809 OPS in July and .822 in August. Maybe he can help.

I genuinely wonder what is up with Conger's throwing this year. With the Angels the past two years, he threw out 24% of runners - league average is about 26%. His career-low was in his rookie year, 2011, when he threw out 18% of the 65 runners that attempted to steal. This year, 1 out of 30, or 3%. Something has got to be up, health-wise, for that kind of drop-off.

On the bright side, guys aren't running on him as frequently this year as they did before (maybe due to working with pitchers like Keuchel, who do a better job holding runners). With the Angels, runners attempted a steal once every 8 innings when Conger was behind the plate. This year, they've only attempted about 1 steal every 13 innings.

Apparently, MRI showed Castro's strain is a Grade 1 and he is optimistic and starting light exercises already.

I lost our injury thread, but the MRI on Feldman said he had some inflammation in his shoulder and he got a shot. Likely to miss a start then be right back in the mix.

According to the Astros' official web site, Sipp has a bad back. With Pérez' god awful performance (9.00 era; 2.60 whip with the Astros) it looks like Thatcher is the bull pen lefty, like it or not.

So you're basing that on a bad what, 3 innings of recent work from Perez? Come on.

Bringing Feldman back likely means Keuchel misses the 4-game set in Arlington.  That's how ESPN sees it at least.  We'll see.

There is no fucking way you have Keuchel miss a start, particularly one that is so important.  No.  Fucking.  Way.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

ESPN has corrected their rotation, completely removing Feldman.  So now, instead of Keuchel going the day after the Rangers series, ESPN has him going in Game 3 of that series.  That also means Keuchel in slated to pitch in each of the 4 remaining Angels and Rangers series.  Dallas will pitch on every 5th day a couple times, skipping in front of McCullers this first time, despite already leading the league in Innings Pitched.   Pennant Races are fun.

According to McTaggart, Feldman has been diagnosed with a sprained right shoulder and will be out for the rest of the season.

I would think a sprained right shoulder would hurt like hell, but maybe that's normal for Feldman in August.

If Luhnow had not gotten Kazmir and Fiers, the Astros wouldn't be in first place and probably would have had very little chance at a wild card spot.

We may have just witnessed what a good game-caller can do for a group of pitchers.

Hinch is calling the pitches. at least he is giving the catcher the initial sign.
