Kyler Murray question...
« on: March 03, 2015, 05:12:32 pm »
Just a bit of a question, but what are the realistic expectations when it comes to Murray and the amateur draft?  I'm sure it happens more than I realize, but have teams started spending first round picks on sub-six foot second basemen?  Is there something about him that I'm missing?

Sure! Delino DeShields Jr.

2nd basemen taken in the first round + supplemental picks:

Only a few have been taken in the top 10 picks of the first round (didn't check size stats on them):

Rickey Weeks (#2 2003) Brewers
Todd Walker (#8 1994) twins
Ty Griffen (#9 1988) Cubs
Pat Rockett (#10 1973) Braves (out of Robert E Lee HS - San Antonio)
Chris Burke (#10 2001) Astros
Cory Spangebarg (#10 2011) Rockies

Always ready to go to a game.

But wasn't Burke at SS when he was drafted? And advertised as such?

YOu are correct according to the Astros' site.  But Baseball Reference had him listed as a 2B.  Good catch.

Ask Gerry.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

And they missed DeShields, who, though he played OF in HS, was announced by the Astros as a 2B, unless my memory is way off. And he was #10 overall.

DDJ was announced as a CF.  They then said they planned to move him to 2B.  Both Baseball reference and Astros.com show him as a CF in the draft.
