Texans vs. Jags
« on: November 20, 2013, 03:06:23 pm »
Getting started early, a number of Texans missed practice today, including Watt, Hopkins and Jackson.  On Sunday, seeing Watt wander off the field and Schaub wander on to it prompted me to Facebook my concern that this may be rock bottom for the Texans.

Here's the thing:  beating the Jags should be a foregone conclusion; but losing to them probably puts Kubiak on the street.  Hmmmm...

I'm not sure why anyone would think that.  How are the Texans not the worst team in the league?

I haven't watched the Jags yet this year.

Well, they still have to play each other twice.  The Texans may win, but I think it's far from a foregone conclusion that they will.

Hopkins is just practicing the disappearing act he pulled on Sunday.

He didn't disappear, Kubiak benched him.

Because with a lead and running back like Foster you want to just pound the ball and run the clock.

Eh?  Oh.

Kubiak said Hopkins "made some mistakes" early in the game, so Kubiak benched him.  Hopkins "disappeared" the same way Keenum "disappeared in the 4th quarter".

The moronic thing is how quickly Hopkins and Keenum get benched, yet "established" players (and coaches) get to go out and stink it up every week, for years, and they're just fine.

Kubiak is a menace.

Someone on Twitter noted that if the Jaguars win, they'd move out of last place in the division, but somehow still be in line for the first overall pick because of NFL rules. Is that right? How would that work?

Tie breaker is
Someone on Twitter noted that if the Jaguars win, they'd move out of last place in the division, but somehow still be in line for the first overall pick because of NFL rules. Is that right? How would that work?

-Overall ties are then broken by strength of schedule, which is a calculation of the combined record of all of a team's opponents in that year, with divisional opponents counting twice.
-The next tie breaker would be record against conference opponents and then divisional opponents.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Before that can happen, they have to beat the Falcons in the race to the bottom.

The Texans have not been flagged on special teams today. That has to be some kind of record.

For at least the third time in just over ten years. I would love for one of the nutless dickwads who pass themselves off as journalists in Houston ask him how much of the franchise's colossal ineptitude is his fault. I would seriously love to know what he thinks.

He dropped two very catchable balls today.  Everyone - with the exception of Watt - has given up.

Johnson completely mailed it in today.  As did Ben Tate.  With half the guys, though, they're so bad you can't tell.

It was the double whammy. Bringing the ball out of the endzone for no reason to the 15 plus holding. Classic.

Jacksonville kicked off four times today.  Three of the four, Martin fielded in the end zone, and they managed to start at the 19, the 15 and the 7.  The fourth went out of bounds in the end zone and Martin couldn't field it.  Had Martin simply caught the kick off and fell down, they'd have gained 19 yards of field position.

And Joe Marciano will still have a job tomorrow.

So does Kubiak last the day?  I cannot think of a reason why he should. The team has given up on him.  These guys need to have someone in charge who will have some say in whether they have a job next year.

Your last sentence is why Kubiak will finish the season.  They're not going to be able to find the permanent coach in the last few weeks.  McNair is oblivious anyway.

Just as long as they have the new coach(es) and GM(?) in place to run the draft this time.

I didn't say a permanent head coach - not even a coach at all.  When they fire Kubs they can elevate Wade Phillips to that interim role.  They need to have someone who will be around to evaluate the talent and has a meaningful say on their jobs next year.  A "special assistant" to McNair, or some crap like that...don't care what you call it.  Not someone interested in the permanent job, but talented in scouting players and providing an evaluation.  Some names that, in my uneducated mind, could potentially do that are Tony Dungy, Lovie Smith, and Jon Gruden.  I'm sure that there are others, but I'm generally ignorant on who are good talent evaluators and who are not (not to mention who would be available).

Exactly.  Though I'm not convinced that Smith needs to go.  He's brought in talent.  Super Bowl caliber talent.  They've been coached to 2 wins.

That's just it...any interim coach will not have a say so in whether or not these guys have a job next year.  Philips will not be the permanent head coach, so why make him interim?
...
As for who is available, there are numerous Super Bowl head coaches who are theoretically available...Smith, Dungy, Gruden, Cowher...all of whom are young enough to be viable, should they decide they want to get back in the coaching game.  There are also several others who *may* be available...Rex Ryan and Mike Tomlin are names being thrown out, though I don't think either will be fired.  I'd hire any of those guys in a heartbeat, should they be available.  I personally don't see anyone other than Smith being interested at this point.  Smith is McNair's kind of guy, but he's a Kubiak clone in personality (as is Dungy), and that may not be what they want.

Exactly.  Though I'm not convinced that Smith needs to go.  He's brought in talent.  Super Bowl caliber talent.  They've been coached to 2 wins.

Anyone else notice that the more Keenum gets groomed to be the starting QB, the worse he gets?

Rex Ryan would be perfect.  After all, it's not like he stuck with a failing quarterback for far too long, blowing up a season in the process, and then started swapping QBs in and out willy-nilly confusing the fuck out of everyone.

Eh?  Oh.

It's also notable that Ryan has won despite having one of the worst QBs in the league.  The Jets have had 5 win talent and a 2-win QB, yet Ryan has taken them to the AFC Championship twice with that.

Dear god, not Rex Ryan.

He would be infinitely better than what they currently have.  Despite his "personality", he's a damn good football coach.

He just needs to put his best foot forward.

At least he can see his feet now.

I think he's more interested in seeing other people's feet.

And there's nothing wrong with that.  Rex is hot for his wife and her feet.  Not what gets me going, but I'm ok with that.

I think Rob Ryan summed it up best: "Naw, I mean hell, he is a little freaky I guess," Rob Ryan said. "Hell, I don't know. I like everything about my wife. She got great feet, too. She got everything nice. What the hell."

At least you can watch them suck on TV.

Yeah. 'Cause I can't. I don't know if I've previously mentioned how much that aggravates me.
