Cash Grab?
« on: August 14, 2013, 12:40:36 pm »
Earlier it was Wright for cash considerations, now it is Blackley. Hmmmm.

“@JuliaMoralesCSN:
#Astros trade LHP Travis Blackley to the #Rangers for PTBNL and cash consideration.”

ETA:

“@Evan_P_Grant:
Appears to be some discrepancy on Astros transaction: There is no PTBNL going from Rangers to Houston in deal.”

I don't get the cash trades.  I understand the need to get rid of some of the dead weight on the 40 man, but surely there's some high-A roster filler type that the Rays or Rangers could part with in these cases.

why would you want a roster filler?

Wright may have been non-tendered and Blackley wasn't worth a 40-man spot.  They just cut Juri Perez and Zach Johnson.  So the minimum on a prospect needed just to make a roster spot on the minor league clubs has gone up.  Better to turn the players soon to be cut into cash (which can be added to a free agent's salary offer) versus just letting them go in the off season.

Bedard cleared waivers.  He's got to be worth something.  3.30 ERA over the last 10.  Could pitch out of the pen.  Certainly worth more than Blackley

I agree.  Bedard has been pitching well, and I assume he is not making too much.  However, no team wanted that.  Surprising.

Bedard has backwards splits this year; lefties have hit him pretty well, albeit in just a 100ish ABs, compared to about 350 for righties. So maybe teams aren't interested in him for the 'pen for that reason. For his career, he's been just slightly better vs. lefties, .244/.338/.354 compared to .247/.318/.385.

Why not keep him around next year?

I'm not sure what to make of that. I heard Felix Hernandez and Elvis Andrus cleared waivers, too. They can always pull them back, right?

Yes. It seems like an odd exercise to me. Don't understand the point of waiving a guy you have no intention of letting go unless it is to gauge interest for an off-season deal or something.

I have not seen either of you, but I HAVE seen the guys masquerading as pitchers in the Astro bullpen, and I stand by my original statement.

If the Astros were to trade Bedard this year, the highest paid player on the roster would be....Phillip Humber 800K, followed by Altuve at 505K

When is the last time a MLB roster featured not a single player making over 800K, let alone 1 million?  1985?
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

What if they threw in Bedard as an incentive to get someone to take Hummer?  That might actually be a good trade.
