EPL on NBC in 2013
« on: October 30, 2012, 10:13:21 am »
Every game available live somewhere on an NBC outlet.  Link.

Now all I need is for Crystal Palace to make it back up (currently sitting 4th in the Championship, unbeaten in 11 games, having just beaten the league leaders on the road last weekend, knocking them off the top).  So far, the lack of a manager doesn't seem to be slowing us down.

I like this because FS Plus costs 15 bucks a month on Uverse.

That much extra cost for a second channel really ticks me off.

It's insane that it is a stand-alone cost.

At least you get it.  No U-Verse for me, shitty Comcast only.

On the brighter side (at least for me), I just got tickets to Arsenal v. Fulham next week.  I had to tell someone since the wife just rolls her eyes when I talk about going to sporting events.

I end up paying UVerse $27,000 monthly for phone, tv, and computer service.  For that I have enough sports channels to watch the Astros, high def, no movie channels, pretty fast internet, and a phone I realized this morning had been unplugged for who knows how long.

What do I watch?  The Astros in season, movies off of netflix or apple, Austin City Limits, Top Gear off of netflix (thanks Limey), America's Test Kitchen, Modern Family, and, if it's any good, Masterpiece Theater.  Has anyone figured out how to get your UVerse costs down to a reasonable fee?

Sounds like you could stand to lose all the HBOs.  Other than that, you're fucked.

A mate of mine in London (a Leeds fan, for some twisted reason) has adopted Fulham as his London Premiership team.  Therefore, I have done the same (until Palace get promoted).  Fuck Arsenal.

I got a good deal on Uverse when I signed up, Neil... but after a year my $135 moves to $180, I think. I'll probably lose the extra (i.e., non-HBO) movie channels at that time.

There's only 2 spots left for promotion, my Cardiff City boys have one of the automatic spots locked up.  I've chosen Tottenham to follow till the bluebirds are promoted.

That would be the same Cardiff that's already lost to Crystal Palace once already this season?

Spurs are the only other acceptable alternative London Premiership team option.

I only pay about $8 for the extra sports pack which includes NHL Network, Fox Soccer and Fox Soccer Plus along with other sports channels. Too bad I don't watch any of the other 500 channels on my cable package.

Table topping Cardiff w the best goal differential, yeah.
The championship has some real quality this year, a lot of depth at the top of the table.

Palace now one point off the top, and a new - highly rated - manager installed.

This is getting fun!

Meanwhile 2 of the 3 promoted teams are really stinking up the EPL.

Congrats, this is going to be a hell of a season.  I'm still not sure if Malky Mackay is up to the task of leading a team to the promised land.

Yep.  At least in Palace's last cameo appearance in the Premiership, they never got truly blown out by anyone (lost 5-2 at Man U and 5-1 at Arsenal - but drew with both those teams at home).

Terrible showing against a weak side by Cardiff.  Their away form has been shocking so far.

Meanwhile, Palace have recorded away wins at Leicester, Wolves (and Bolton...suck it Dougie), and are unbeaten in 12.  On such things are championships earned.

Cardiff hasn't been winning pretty, but they have positioned themselves really well for the last half of the season.  A couple of quality signings during the Jan transfer window could help seal the deal.  Palace is right there as well.

Palace reverting to its chronic (literally) problem of shipping late goals.  THey've had the lead in the last 4 games, and come away with 4 points out of 12.  Cardiff are rolling.  Never mind how pretty it is, getting out of the Championship is MMA compared to the Premiership's dressage.

As it turns out, there was a fly-on-the-wall documentary team following the club this year.  Here's the teaser-trailer (some language NSFW).

7:30am on NBC Sports.  As to expectations, me neither.

Palace are like the Astros this year - overmatched against most opponents and using this season as part of a building process.  (Literally, around half the projected additional revenue is earmarked for much-needed stadium renovations.)  Any fun had along the way is a bonus.

Spurs should be driving towards the Champions League, but may end up backsliding if/when Bale goes.  He will leave a big hole in the team.

Cardiff has a shot, but it makes sense that the promoted sides are those tipped for the drop.  Palace are a virtual certainty, unless there's some major aligning of the stars.  Hull sit in between these two.

What all of the promoted teams need is a few of the incumbents to shit the bed - preferably early.  Candidates (IMHO) for that are Norwich, Southampton, Stoke, Sunderland and West Brom.  So Cardiff, for example, need to be better than Hull, Palace and one of the aforementioned.  Not that big of an ask, on paper...

It'll be interesting to see how the Bale loss is handled. Sigurdsson and Holtby need to step up but they are young and have the ability to. I don't know much about Chadli or Soldado but from what I've read they're good players. I'm confident in the midfield though and think it might be one of the strongest in the EPL. Center Backs are solid but Spurs still suck at set pieces. I don't know much about Crystal Palace other than the drama to get promoted last year. That was a fun story.

Here ya go:

Quote from: The Guardian
Crystal Palace are back in the Premier League so, in light of previous failings, it is probably wise to tick off those predictable reasons to be fearful. Each of the London club's four attempts to survive a season in the revamped top flight has ended in ignominy. They have been relegated with 49 points, enough to have finished eighth last term. They have spluttered home fourth from bottom and still been demoted, courtesy of the division being trimmed to 20 clubs. Last time around, eight years ago, they were eight minutes from bucking that depressing trend only to ship a late equaliser to local rivals Charlton and tumble once again.  So that is their history, and it is hardly one from which to draw confidence.

Recently rescued from administration (Chapter 11), the club has since been - for the first time since the 1980s at least - debt free and the owners of its own stadium.  All of the prior trips to the Prem were by a club that had no money to spend, and also received little if any additional revenue - the gate receipts going to the previous owner who retained the stadium and charged rent for it.  Relegation is still an almost certainty, but the big money windfall will allow them to renovate the stadium and the squad, ready to make a run at getting back up and staying up.

Palace have been good before.  They've won trophies at the top level, reached the F.A. Cup Final in 1990 against Moan Utd (when a 3-3 thriller was followed up by a replay that was a dismal 1-0 loss) and finished as high as 3rd (1990/1991) in the Prem's predecessor.  Oh, and they once did this.

Wait... the FA Cup does replay even in the final?

YOU'VE LIED TO ME, FM2013.

I think that might be an old rule. I'm pretty sure it goes to shoot outs eventually if still tied.

Used to.  Not any more.

It used to be that there were no penalty shoot-outs at all.  Teams would replay, over and over and over again until someone won the game.  This started to go away during the soccer violence in the 1970s, as the police said that they could not have such big games happen on short notice, but the final few rounds still had them as they could plan for potential replays as there were fewer fixtures.

More lately, they've gone away because the TV companies don't like their schedules getting fucked up.

Whew.

BTW, I have chosen Stoke purely because I managed to win the Premier League AND Champions League in the same season with them in FM2013.  Naturally, I was fired after the next season.

I'm sure this will go well for me.

After looking in on the USA vs Bosnia match, I'm interested in seeing how Altidore does at Sunderland this year. He's been on fire lately.

Sunderland is Philadelphia to Newcastle's New York.  But Newcastle = Beaumont, so...

ETA:  This classic comparison (marginally NSFW) involves Newcastle.

I have read the book and watched the movie once each.  IIRC, the book is a little more vague, but what I remember taking away from it was that the psycho stuff perpetrated by Bateman was the product of a fevered mind, and all in his head.  It was tinged though, with the fact that throughout the tale, even the friends couldn't tell each other apart - all being such stereotypical clones of Wall Street yuppies - so there was a possibility that it all could have been real and he just got away with it.

Admittedly, it's been a while since I visited either medium, and the book was over 20 years ago.

I read the book a couple of times when it first came out and it's my understanding that he got away it.  Of course, I was in the 7th grade at the time, so I hadn't quite mastered little things like nuance and metaphor yet.

I've never seen the movie all the way through.

I think the movie takes the literal meaning: he got away with it.  The book is way more ambiguous.

I remember thinking all the way through that there's no way he wouldn't get caught (taking bloodied sheets to the dry cleaners etc.), then I realised that it was all in his head, then I wasn't so sure.

Back to the topic at hand...

Just got an email from NBC (I signed up for EPL stuff from them).  5 matches live on NBC Sports, one live on NBC and the balance live on their website!  I believe all matches are available on their website for later viewing.

Way more EPL on TV here than in the UK.  I am in heaven!  No way Crystal Palace merits a live game very often on the old Fox Soccer deal.  Now, at worst, I can stream their games live and throw it up on the big screen via Apple TV.

I am a little concerned about the on-screen experts.  Graeme La Saux and Lee Dixon are two former players who would lead me to break my hands before I got bored punching them.

I was pleasantly surprised by Warren Barton.  He was part of the Wimbledon "Crazy Gang", which didn't sit well with me, but a friend in Limeyland did point out that he was probably the one shining streak of quality in that otherwise prehistoric pack.

Thanks.  Wasn't expecting much from that game, but I was impressed with the effort and organisation.  They started with their "Championship XI", minus Zaha (gone) and 30-goal man Murray (injured), which was weird, but looked a lot more threatening when they subbed in Chamack, Phillips and Williams.  I think they can compete with the lower half for sure, and that's all that matters this year.

Thought Holloway was quite a bit over the top going off about the penalty.  That's a 50/50 call in any game, it just came down tails for Palace that day.  Bad things happen to struggling clubs (which I expect us to be), so he needs to get used to it.  And Moxey needs to be told about Dufnering, so he keeps his arms down when he's in the penalty area!

Not to mention Tottenham had zero penalty kicks called for them all of last season. I can definitely see CP staying up though and will check in on them throughout the season. The eagle flying around was cool too.

Cardiff looked overwhelmed by west ham which frightens me bc they are a mid table team who totally out classed us.  I'm hoping it was more a poor performance due to being ill prepared for the "bright lights" of the EPL and less a testament of the teams quality.  It's going to be a nerve wracking season hoping for enough points to finish 17th.

Palace was the only new kid that looked like they had a chance to hang around. Of course this was only one match into the season so we'll see. Hull looked like deer in headlights.

Palace were the only promoted team to open at home.  I think the familiar surroundings would've helped.  They had a fantastic record at home last year - they only lost twice in 23 league games at Selhurst (ironically, one of those being on opening day).  If they can keep that faith in their home form, they've got a puncher's chance.

Crazy 2nd weekend for Cardiff.  I have to say, I've watched more EPL in the first two weeks than I did most of last year, mostly bc of CCFC, but also the availability on TV.

Availability is awesome.  However, I just found out that Palace are, apparently, targeting Joey Barton as a transfer window signing.  This makes me very, very unhappy.

Even Joey Barton's mother thinks Joey Barton is a dbag.

Cardiff play Everton at home this weekend, I think this will be a good test of what to expect for the season.  The concern is for a big let down after the massive victory over Man City, but having watched  Malky Mackay lead Cardiff for the last two years, I don't think he'd allow a let down.

Oops, forgot to offer my congrats on the big win this weekend!  I know I should be rooting for Khaleesi to go down in flames (to take one of the three trapdoor spots), but I feel more of a kindred spirit there than with other relegation contenders.  Fuck Hull.

Just bank the three unexpected points, and carry on.

Thanks Limey.  I haven't started rooting against anyone, except Swansea.  I'm all for the big dogs getting knocked off.  The mid and bottom of the table has become significantly more competitive in the last few years with more money pouring into the EPL, it's going to be quite a struggle for all of us.

Meanwhile, in Peru, Union Comercio's unfortunate Manager, Edgar Ospina, had this to say:  "I don't think anything like this has happened to any team in the world. We deserve to be in the Guinness Book of Records. I've never seen anything like it."

It was his reaction, a week after his team performed not one, but two, speculator examples of self-immolation, they then did this.

I love the commentator's reaction to the third epic blunder.  Perhaps the polar opposite of "GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!"

I thought the first one was pretty cool too.  The defender, with the threat having been successfully snuffed out, calmly volleys the ball into his own net.  That's pure brainfart.  The third one was just the unfortunate result of crappy defending.

The goalie shitting the bed like that, though, is awesome.  It reminded me of this classic clip.

Never was, never has been against the rules, AFAIK.  You're not allowed to kick the ball out of a goalie's hand(s), nor are you allowed to play the ball when the goalie has two hands on it.  What that guy did violated neither rule.

And then there's the old "Hide Behind the Goalie and Steal the Ball" ploy.

For some reason I thought you weren't allowed to touch a ball in any way that was in the keeper's hands or hand.

Whaddayaknow.  Just found this:

Quote
12.16 GOALKEEPER POSSESSION OF THE BALL

The goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball when...holding the ball in the outstretched open palm. Once established, possession is maintained when the ball is held as described above...While the ball is in the possession of the goalkeeper, it may not be challenged for or played by an opponent in any manner.

Who was the keeper that whiffed when trying clear a back pass? The ball hit a divot or something and hopped over his foot and rolled into the net.

GFY...respectfully.

Also, before someone "asks", Scott Carson, also vs. Croatia.  England have not had a really good goalkeeper since Gordon Banks.

Nope, you can only be offside when attempting to play a forward pass from a teammate*.  Anything from/off an opponent, or coming backwards, is exempt from offside.

* If you're behind the last defender when the pass is played.

This implies that you are currently *not* useless on Sunday afternoons.  We haven't heard your wife's opinion on that yet.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Ironically, I was in England and was only able to follow the match on teletext...while it was being DVRd back in Houston.  Haven't watched it yet, but it was a happy result and a welcome 3 points.  It shows that Palace can play with the middle-to-bottom Premiership teams, and we only have to do better than 3 of them.  Palace were also very active at the transfer deadline, and seem to have improved the squad notably from the one that acquitted itself well in the first 3 games.

Ashley Young's diving bullshit* on Saturday morning has stirred the pot quite significantly.  The current Moan Utd manager - in a position totally contrary to his lauded predecessor - has always appeared genuinely interested in cutting out diving, and has stayed true to form here.  His comments are quite candid and honest.  He has called for retrospective punishment for blatant offenders.

The Crystal palace Chairman, Steve Parish, amongst others, has gone further.  He has called for the prescribed punishment for diving to be upped from a yellow card to a straight red.  The logic being that illegally denying a goal-scoring opportunity is a straight red, so therefore illegally creating one - a penalty - should carry the same level of punishment.  I agree.

As Parish quite succinctly summed up the weekend's results:  Ashley Young's cheating got him a yellow card and 3 points.  Palace  get 0 points and lose a key player for the next game.  This is why diving has to be punished more severely at the time of the offense and/or afterwards on video evidence.

* Utd's Patrice Evra started the swim meet with a clear flop in the Palace penalty area early in the 1st half.  The referee was not fooled, but declined to make any further issue of it.  Shortly thereafter, Ashley Young hooked his leg around Palace's Kagisho Dikgacoi's leg, and then pulled off a spectacular wire-fighting tumble.  So outrageous was the cheat, that the referee had an easy decision to issue Young with a yellow card.

Then, right on the stroke of half-time, a poor pass by Palace's Jedinak stupidly gifted the ball to Young just outside the Palace penalty area.  Young latched onto the ball and burst past a Palace defender en route to goal.  Dikgacoi came across to cover and bumped Young about 2 yards outside the penalty area.  Instead of staying on his feet and bearing down on the Palace goal, as Palace's Gayle had done in similar circumstances at the other just minutes before, Young pitched himself forwards to the ground, his momentum carrying him into the penalty area.

The referee whistled play dead and was, at that point, under intense pressure.  The home players and fans were baying for a penalty while the Palace players were appealing that there was no foul and/or that it was outside the area.  He had to rule on something as he'd stopped play.  He appealed to his assistant on the sideline, who totally punted despite being in the perfect position to see that any offense at all occurred outside the area.  With all this stacked up in front of him, the referee decided to give the penalty, which also meant that a red card to Dikgacoi was inevitable even though there appeared to be other Palace players in the area, making him not the "last man".

The penalty was dispatched.  After that, there was no way that a 10-man Palace side was going to do be able to do anything other than play out the clock and attempt to limit the damage.  Utd got a 2nd goal late on, but should be embarrassed by their inability to dominate a much inferior team, at home, with a man advantage - and also by the manner in which that man advantage was gained.

I'm not surprised Ashley Young was involved in that. He's one of a handful of players in the Premier League that constantly try these tactics. Yes Bale was one too and I don't think it was a coincidence that Tottenham was awarded 0 penalties all of last season and have already been awarded 2 this season in the absence of Bale. This could be a good thing, as you said the pot is significantly stirred. Good for Moyes too. We'll see how he treats Young after this.

Agreed on all fronts.  This may be the end of Young's ability to cheat his way to penalties (but he's been at the centre of a diving storm before...).  Moyes has better options who aren't sullied with the "diver" stain, and I really hope he benches Young for one of those.  It'll send a message to every player out there who thinks he can profit by it.

I really think that refs have to stop giving these bump fouls as penalties.  Messi is fouled all the time, but he rides through them and keeps going, allowing the referee to let play go but then call it back if the fouling managed to stop Messi's run.  Ironically, Young plays in the position once occupied by George Best - a skinny bloke who prided himself on not getting knocked over by bigger players.  Going to ground once they "feel contact" is a coward's way out.

That's one reason why I respect Messi more than Ronaldo in that great debate. I would love to see Messi in England one day but I don't think that will happen.

Palace manager Holloway resigned after Monday's game.  Owner tried to talk him out of it, but Holloway insisted that he'd lost the locker room and it was time for someone new to have a go.  Said that he was used to seeing players react to his half-time coaching, but on Monday he got nothing.

Searching for a new manager.  Arsenal coming to visit on Saturday.  It's not going to be pretty.

Happy to see Sunderland with a result this weekend.  Nice layoff by Altidore, though in not so sure that was his plan.

Our chairman finally sacked Jol.  One one hand I feel for the man, but on the other his stubborn ways and tactical decisions led to some poor results.  I'll tell you one thing, I hope K. Richardson doesn't take the pitch again in the Fulham colors.  He's epically terrible.

Crystal Palace - clearly the worst team in the Premiership - are leading 1-0 at home to the Hammers.  Chamakh, and early season candidate for the Ballon Barn d'Or, with the deftest of headers.

Palace scores against Chelsea to equalize 1-1, although it's still early. But the glorious thing about this goal is that it was scored by the man John Terry should have been marking while he stood there flat-footed. Congratulations, fuck-wit.

I was surprised by it, too, but somebody was going to pay after they got stomped 6-0 and 5-0. Who was the mastermind behind selling Bale to Real Madrid?

Never beat anyone in the top 10 this year either.

I'm assuming sarcasm on the Bale sale but, just in case, it was, of course, the Chairman.  Having said that, it was AVB who spent the proceeds on a pile of dreck, so there is that.

The jury is still out on the new signings. Eriksen and Lamela are both still young but there was talk that Baldini bought who he wanted and AVB just had to deal with it. I still like their chances to turn things around and put up a fight for the top 4 and possibly win a cup or two.

Big weekend for Crystal Palace coming up.  A home fixture against Newcastle is not anything easy given the jordies' recent form, but Palace are playing well too.  Winning games like this one are the difference between staying up and not.

Meanwhile, the other teams in the mud pit at the foot of the division many have very tough matches:  Cardiff* go to an on-fire Liverpool; Fulham host an on-fire Man City; and West Ham travel to Moan Utd.  Sunderland host Norwich, West Brom host Hull and Stoke host Aston Villa in the balance of the bottom 10 fixtures.  There's only 6 points between 19th and 11th.  IF..Palace can pull off a win, they could conceivably jump to 16th.

* With all the crap going on with Cardiff's odious owner and his threat to sack coach Mackay if he doesn't resign (what a chickenshit move, btw), only two things will happen:  Liverpool - with Suarez high on the signing of his new fat contract - will shred a demoralised and distracted team; or Cardiff will rally in support of their embattled manager, and pull off a ridiculous win.  The former is the most obvious outcome, so fully expect the latter to occur.

I thought of you the other day. I was talking with a Uruguayan guy, Oscar is his name, and the talk turned to Suarez. I asked Oscar if he though Suarez was crazy. He was offended, and more than mildly. 'He's a genius!'

He dismissed the ear nibbling as a big misunderstanding.

I have a friend in Limeyland who's about as politically correct as it is possible to be.  However, he is a Liverpool fan and is currently defending on Facebook his joy at Suarez' contract by saying things like "...but have you seen what he's done on the pitch?!"  The multiple episodes of biting and cheating were so last year...

I like Uruguay's side for a number of reasons and one of them is that their two key players could not be any more different. Forlan strikes me as an unusually genteel player, especially for a South American. And Suarez is of course a total nutjob.

They made the semis last time around; they're a legitimate contender.

I'd like them to play well. Any country of 3.5 million people that can hold its own on a global stage is OK by me.

I am, currently, wrestling with the idea of heading down there for some of the tournament.  The England-Uruguay game in Sao Paolo is an obvious choice.  Now if I can only find an airfare less than $3000....

Part of me is relieved not to have to confront that. The other part is eternally scarred, you know, but that's not something I haven't dealt with before.

Yeah, Suarez is out of his mind. I recently saw Neymar in person and that guy is shocking.

Well, pretty much everything is going the opposite way at the moment.

What impresses me more than the finish on that goal was his pass out into space that began the entire sequence. I love those sorts of passes every bit as much as I love a hit and run.

The whole build from the back was pretty. I think it was a total of five touches from taking it out of their defensive end until it went in the net.

Stuck in the office...watching a Premier League triple-header.

Hull vs. Moan U is in the books, the champions having to dig out of a 2-goal hole to win it 2-3.

Palace at Villa has been comfortingly dull, although Palace have been in the ascendancy lately, generating frustration on behalf of the home fans and players alike.

Man City vs. Liverpool to come.

Work?  Not so much.

The second half was way more (too?) exciting, with both keepers having to make multiple good saves.  Palace steal it at the death with a thoroughly deserved, breakaway, injury time winner.  I am breathless...and my office may be somewhat aware that I have been watching footy.

Wow!

ETA:  Palace out of the relegation zone for the first time in months.  That place has a gravitational pull to it, and escaping its clutches isn't easy.

On what was traditionally Derby Day, this game pits the closest geographic match up of any of today's EPL games.

Well, Chelsea at home to Liverpool is the 10am game scheduled on NBC Sports on Sunday morning.  That one actually might be worth watching.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace's loss* at Manchester City has been announced as the 9am game on NBC Sports on Saturday.  After the recent run of good form, a few of Palace's games have been slated for TV broadcast, which is nice.  The NBC app is great, when it works, but it's no replacement for High Def glory on the big screen.

* In games at the Etihad this season, Man City have put 6 past Arsenal, 6 past Spurs, 5 past CSKA Moscow, 7 past Norwich and 4 each past Moan Utd and Newcastle.  Avoiding a drubbing is the priority, as our goal difference** (worth half a point in reality) can't survive a big number.

** One of 5 teams in the -15 to -17 range, but a hammering could put us in a world (of hurt) of our own.

Thus far (start of second half) Palace have managed to dodge several bullets and keep things scoreless. I hope this comment isn't the kiss of death.

Best away performance by a visiting team this season at Man City has been by Crystal Palace (only Bayern Munich has done better, but that was in the Champions League).  Official Man of the Match - the City goalkeeper Joe Hart.  Says it all.

I haven't seen it either.  However, as the alleged foulee was Ashley Young, then Lloris could've lopped of a leg and I'd still be ok with not awarding a penalty.  Young has an avalanche of those decisions going against him to come, if karma's a real thing.

It could have gone either way to be honest. Wellbeck and Januzaj had already committed dives with one getting a yellow card. But it makes up for the dive that drew a PK back at White Hart Lane earlier this season.

I thought it was called properly. From my standpoint, LLoris was pulling his hands and arms back, and if there was any contact, it was Young's foot in Lloris's chest.

Ashley Young's dives are anatomically consistent.  He drags a leg over any available outstretched body part, and leaves that leg extended as he rotates longitudinally in mid-air, landing nose down on his hands at which point he rolls onto his back, arms extended, imploring the referee to award the penalty.

If I were a referee*, I'd book him in the tunnel and tell him "First dive and you're off".

* Also, if I were a referee, most matches would end up five-a-side.

Puncheon is one the dumbest players I've seen in a long time.  And considering the shallow intelligence pool in the EPL, that's saying something.  He and Jerome are dumb and dumber.

Suffering for a lack of goal scoring.  Need Glen Murray back in a hurry!

Ever since my rant at Puncheon, he's scored twice in two (Premier League) games, both 1-0 wins, and Palace have dragged their sorry arses up to 14th.  We can be dropped back to 16th today if some results go against us (Palace won yesterday while there are two teams who can jump us from below playing today...although one is away to Chelsea), but it's much better yo-yoing above the drop zone, than in and out of it.

Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday (live on NBC, I'm guessing).  It will be interesting to see if the Gooners are stung out of their malaise after yesterday's lack lustre performance, or if Palace's defensive rigidity will stifle and frustrate them.

Speaking of which, Paddy McCarthy was back yesterday, where he exhibited his usual calm confidence, which is a huge boost.  He's the long term club captain and defensive rock who's been out with a bad injury for 18 months.  He now gives Pulis options at centre back that he didn't have before.  If Digkacoi (pronounced "Dick-a-shwey") can make it back in the centre of midfiled, returning Ward to his natural position at right back, our defense will get even better.  Plus, Digkacoi helps us going forward, as does having Ward overlapping on the right (Mariappa is defensively solid but offensively inept).

And then there's Glenn Murray due back any time now...

14th spot secured...at least until the weekend.  The two teams who could've caught Palace today, both lost (separately and bizarrely).

Meanwhile, West Ham eke out an unthinkable draw at Chelsea in which they yielded 78% of the possession, 39 shots (to their 1) but not a single goal.  Chelsea needed just a single goal to leapfrog Arsenal into 2nd place, but couldn't get it (not for the want of trying, it seems). Cue Fat Big Sam Allardyce taking full credit for this performance by the Hammers, having shirked all responsibility for the string of horror shows they've put on recently.

Meanwhile, Spurs produced another stinker, losing to City 5-1. That's a schizophrenic team.

Really happy about Fulham's January window.  Hope it's enough to save my side from relegation. Mitroglou and Holtby should make for a more potent attack, but I still worry about our left back situation.  There is a reason my other sides attack down that side and have for about 2 years.

IN: Mitroglou, Heitinga, Holtby, Dempsey, Kvist, Tunnicliffe and Larnell Cole....
OUT: Senderos, Hughes, Ruiz and Berbatov.

Looks like Fulham have kept their chances to escape alive for one more week.  Norwich on the other hand is in trouble.

Fulham have the softest schedule of those at the bottom.  Norwich are the complete opposite; after Fulham, they have 4 games left and see (not necessarily in this order) Liverpool, Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea.  Regardless of what happens vs. Fulham, I don't see Norwich getting enough points to avoid the drop.

After my Palace thumped Cardiff 3-0 at their place, I think Cardiff are done too.  I watched the game, and they had no fight whatsoever.  Palace even put on an extra striker in the 2nd half because Cardiff were posing so little of a threat.  I think if Palace beat Villa at home this weekend (having already beaten them at Villa Park this year), it will make Palace all-but safe and throw Villa more into the mix.  I really don't want Palace having to go to Fulham on the last day needing something from that game to stay up.

Sunderland have lots of games in hand, but are shit.  I think right now it's Norwich and Cardiff, plus Fulham or Sunderland.  If Sunderland show some fight, they can save themselves at the expense of Fulham, but they're going to have to win at least two of those games in hand to do so.  Sunderland's next 4 games are Spurs, Everton, Man City and Chelsea, so they could well be stuck on 25 points when that run is over.  But...then they get 3 out of 4 games against Cardiff, West Brom and Swansea, which are all huge 6-pointers for them.

I generally agree with you.  It may only take 35 points to survive this year.

...and now Norwich have sacked their manager, appointing their youth team coach in his place.  Not ending well for them this season, I think.

Relegation Update:

20th:  Sunderland (25 points) are done.  7 points adrift and only 1 point earned in nearly 2 months, their games in hand won't save them.  Apparently the clubhouse is a mess.  Their next two games are Man City and Chelsea...

19th:  Cardiff (29 points) lifted themselves with a surprise win over Southampton.  3 points from safety, but with a run of winnable games coming up, they have a chance to move out of the drop zone.  Internal strife - caused mostly by their mental owner - could yet be their downfall.

18th:  Fulham (30 points) beat Norwich last weekend, which is a huge fillip for their survival prospects.  Just 2 points from safety, they have what is widely considered the softest run-in of the bottom dwellers (NTTAWWT), none of which are against other relegation candidates (the dreaded 6-pointers).

-----------------

17th:  Norwich (32 points) look to be done.  They failed to get any points from their last three games, and now face a closing set of fixtures against Liverpool, Moan Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal - a minefield through which their youth team manager is expected to steer them.  It is hard to see them not being jumped by either or both of Fulham and Cardiff, which cooks their canary.

16th & 15th:  West Brom and Swansea (33 points) are now in peril on only 33 points.  Only 3 points above the drop zone, failure from here on out could drag them into the poo.  Swansea have played 1 more game than West Brom, so are perhaps more threatened, although West Brom did contrive to throw away a 3-goal lead at home to Spurs last Saturday.

14th:  Aston Villa (34 points) lost to Palace this weekend and, while they'd be unlucky to drop from here, they need to start winning (or even drawing) games, they have lost their last 5 and have won only 1 game (against Norwich) since January.  They close the season away to Man City and Tottenham, so they may want to get on that issue quickly.

13th:  Hull (36 points) just won their way into the FA Cup final, but still aren't clear of repeating Wigan's ignominious feat of winning that trophy while being relegated.  They have 5 games left but they include Arsenal, Man Utd and Everton, so they need to make sure they don't get on the wrong end of the two 6-pointers at Fulham and home to Villa.

12th:  Crystal Palace (37 points) are looking so much better than a month ago.  Still, 5 games left, including home fixtures against Liverpool and Chelsea means that they, too, need to keep picking up points wherever they can.  If not, the closing fixture - away to Fulham - is looming large in the survival battle.

11th:  West Ham (37 points) play Arsenal tomorrow and then Palace next weekend.  Not really in danger for much of the season, losing those two - and a run-in that ends hosting Spurs and then away to Man City - can throw them into the mix if teams below start stirring.

Everyone else is mathematically safe, with the exception of Stoke, who can be caught by Sunderland if Sunderland win all their remaining fixtures and Stoke lose all of theirs.

I just realized that my view of British football is completely warped:  I know far more about the chances for relegation than I do about who's doing well.

I just realized that my view of British football is completely warped:  I know far more about the chances for relegation than I do about who's doing well.

Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea remain in the mix to win it.  Liverpool are in the catbird seat, atop the table and unassailable if they win their remaining 4 games - which does include Chelsea at home (having just beaten Man City at home).

The other battle at the top is for 4th place (the aforementioned teams having wrapped up the top 3 places).  Can Everton unseat perennial Champions League disappointers Arsenal from their customary 4th place berth?  Everton are in there right now clear by 2 points (2.5 if you count the goal difference).  The loser drops into the dreaded, leg-sapping, shithole visiting, Thursday night scheduling Europa League, which typically destroys the season of whomever is unlucky enough to participate.

On a personal note, Crystal Palace may yet have more to say in the title race.  We put a big dent in Chelsea's challenge two weeks ago, and we still have home games to come against Liverpool and Man City.  We also play Everton on the road (Wednesday at 1:45pm CDT).  Palace now have the 5th best defense in the league, which is remarkable considering we spotted everyone an 8-game head start of being terrible at that.  I expect zero points from these three games, but just as easily we could post three draws (likely scoreless) and maybe even nick one.  We have gone from being the season's laughing stock to the season's banana skin - which is a good thing.

Is the FA Cup not some sort of championship?  I guess I'm really out of the loop.

Totally separate and parallel competition.  In parlance you might understand: blind draw single elimination tournament.  It used to be the romantic trophy, but it's importance has diminished lately due to the huge money prizes in the Premier and Champions Leagues.

There's also a third competition - the League Cup - which also runs parallel to the others during the season (it's the least glamorous).  In the more rarefied air at the top of the league, teams get to compete in the Champions League, too, so that's four separate and distinct titles up for grabs every year.

Teams do win more than one in the same year; Moan Utd famously "did the triple" in 1999 of the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League.  All three competitions were resolved in one 10-day stretch in May of that year.

Understandable.

The romance of the FA Cup is that it starts with denial league hoofers - any team that has status in the Football Association - who play a series of preliminary rounds.  As the competition progresses, teams from leagues with a higher status are fed in to join the lower league qualifiers.  After 6 such preliminary rounds, the lower 2 professional leagues join in what's called the 1st Round "proper", with the Premiership and Championship teams joining in the 3rd round. There are 14 rounds in total by the time you get through the bracket to the final.

Thus, it's possible for a bunch of semi-pro, shit-kickers to win their way through to a glamour fixture - and massive pay-day - at one of the Premierships edifii of greed.  Every once in a while, they win that game too!

Quote
The most recent example of a non-league team beating top-flight opposition is Level 5 Conference Premier side Luton Town's victory over Level 1 Premier League's Norwich City at Carrow Road in the 2012–13 Fourth Round Proper.  In games between league sides, one of the most notable results was the 1992 victory by Wrexham, 92nd/last in the previous season's league, over reigning league champion Arsenal.

I like the idea of an "open" tournament, but it must make for one LONG drawn out process.

Meanwhile, Cardiff have made official their accusation of Palace "stealing" their team sheet for the recent 3-0 drubbing the Eagles put upon them.  Now, there's a lot of moving parts here:

* Cardiff unceremoniously sacked their Head of Recruitment, Iain Moody, earlier this season.  Moody signed a termination agreement that forbade him from discussing the circumstances of his sacking.

* Vincent Tan - a Malaysian businessman, Cardiff's owner and pint-sized nutcase - replaced Moody with an inexperienced 23-year old Kazakh.

* Tan would later unceremoniously sack the team manager, Malky Mackay, and watch results go from bad to worse.

* Iain Moody joined Crystal Palace.

* Palace played Cardiff, in Cardiff, and thumped them to the tune of 3-0 (having already beaten them 2-0 at Selhurst Park earlier in the season).

* Cardiff later complained that Moody had got the Cardiff team sheet, two days early, from former colleagues, and sacked those involved (I'm having Holy Grail flashbacks at this point).

* The Premier League said nothing until a formal complaint was made and, now that it has been, they are investigating.

* The complaint is that Moody texted his former colleagues for info, and was sent such info.  Cardiff admit that they knew of this "leak" two days prior to the fixture.

Here's what I think:

* The issue is with Cardiff's staff leaking the information, not Palace's acquisition of same.

* If it is such an egregious breach, how come nothing was said before the game?

* Palace fielded exactly the same starting 11, from a squad of 25, for the Cardiff game as for the games immediately before (Chelsea, 1-0 win) and after (Villa, 1-0 win), so there is no indication that Palace's prior knowledge impacted their team selection.

* The Premier League has only ever deducted points for a team going into bankruptcy.  Sunderland, this season, fielded an ineligible player for 4 games and received only a fine for their - clearly more serious - transgression.

* The League will deduct points from Palace over this, and that will be enough to send us down.  It is our destiny to be relegated in ever more curious and unusual ways.

The advantage gained by knowing the other squad's starting lineup a few days in advance seems incredibly minimal to me.  It's not like there are any surprises anyway.

The FA Cup model is the one thing I think that American sports, with the exlcution of the NFL, should take a look at implementing.  Having a second, parallel competition to a championship season would create a NCAA type atmosphere and give little guys additional hope for hardware.  Furthermore, it requires thought as to the final stages on whether to focus on the league or the cup.

In baseball for instance, you could have short three game series.  The two teams who were in the finals the year before receive byes and all else are thrown into a 5 round tournament.  This is a 3 day break from the championship season in each month: April, May, June, Aug, Sept (July is skipped due to All-Star break).   Players would get more days off (teams who suffer a loss early) and it would create additional playoff style excitment in Aug and Sept for the semi's and finals.  Honestly, the details would need to be worked out about the length of the season, days off and pay adjustments of course, but it would certainly be exciting for the fans and players.I also like the fact that unlike the NCAA tournament, there are draws after each round for the next round's opponent...yet another event to promote for MLB.com/MLB.TV.  The result is that you might get a Detroit v. LA Dodgers game in the first round while the Rockies make it to the semi-finals having only faced the Mariners, Cubs, and Twins.

The test of a true champion is how he reacts to adversity on days when it is bound to come.

Thanks for that Limey - good summary.  The Cardiff win last weekend over the Saints was unwelcomed as a Fulham supporter.  That said, it's great to see things so tight; it will make for an exciting last month.

Update:

West Ham lost last night, and should still have a few concerns.  Sunderland got a deserved but unexpected point at Man City (derailing the latter's challenge for the title in the process).  Palace took 3 points from Everton on the road.

Sunderland are still mired at the foot of the table, having ticked off one of their games in hand without the 3 points they desperately needed.  Palace leapfrogged West Ham into 11th spot (the only position change in the bottom half), and onto the mythical 40 point total that is considered safe.

At the top, Chelsea's trip to Liverpool on the 27th looks to be the title decider, unless either of them stumble before then.  Man City are on the outside looking in, unless those other two do them a favor.

Update:

Well, getting the important stuff out of the way, Palace beat West Ham (their 5th win in a row, 3 of which came on the road) and are now mathematically safe - as are all teams 11th and above.

None of the bottom teams helped themselves, with the dramatic exception being Sunderland, who scored a totally unexpected victory over Chelsea.  To put it in perspective:  in two terms under Jose Mourinho, Chelsea had never lost a home league game.  Sunderland broke that streak, and helped themselves immensely.  They have a game in hand (a home game vs. fellow strugglers West Brom - very winnable), 3 points from which vaults them from last place to out of the drop zone.

Cardiff eked out a draw at home to Stoke, preserved by more heroics from their goalie.  That sets up a road trip for them to Sunderland, which is massive for both clubs.  Cardiff may have just pissed away their best chance of a win for the rest of the season, though, and will be hard-pressed to survive from here (good riddance to them!).

Fulham lost at Spurs, and remain in deep trouble.  They do have a better set of fixtures than Cardiff and Norwich, and so must look to pick off those two and hope that Sunderland's revival falls short.

Norwich look doomed.  They showed some fight, but fell to Champions elect Liverpool.  Their hellacious remaining fixture set will likely see them leapfrogged by 2 if not all 3 of the teams below them.  Just one of them passing over will be enough to send them down.

There's a gaggle of teams above these 4 - all still mathematically in trouble, but all unlikely to be run down by the bottom 3, which is what it would take for most of them.

Meanwhile, at the top, Liverpool's win and Chelsea's loss means that Chelsea's theoretical control of their own destiny is gone.  They cannot now regain top spot solely by beating Liverpool next weekend.  They will need help from elsewhere in order to catch Liverpool now.  Crystal Palace might do them a favour as Liverpool come to Selhurst Park one week later...

Oh, and David Moyes will not last until the end of the season.  Moan Utd rolled over at Everton - Moyes' former club - and clearly are not interested in playing for this man, nor for the rest of the season.

Oh, and David Moyes will not last until the end of the season.

...or apparently the day.  I feel for Moyes a bit as he had some of the biggest shoes in football history to fill.  He clearly had not considered that to the extent he needed to do so.  Nearly anyone who tried to take Sir Alex's spot would have failed.  Best of luck to the guy.

I have no animosity towards him either.  But, regardless of the size of shoes he had to fill, he pretty much fucked up everything he touched.  He ballsed up the pre-season transfer window, fired the entire coaching staff and replaced them with his own crew, failed to figure out his best line up (51 different team sheets for 51 games in charge), sent his team out there with tactics were horrendous (and an anathema to the swashbuckling spirit that Moan Utd fans think they've always had), and had no clue how to fix things as they went wrong, either in-game or between games.

He inherited a team that won the title by 11 points, and turned it into Stoke.  He has done severe long-term damage to the franchise, both in terms of their ability to attract top talent and sponsorship deals around the world - hugely important to the Glazers who have their golden goose leveraged up to the eyeballs, .  As every other team in the Premiership will tell you, the Champions League is so valuable in terms of revenue and ability to sign top players (who want CL exposure too), that it is tantamount to a closed shop.  With very little exception (until this year, at least), the same 4 teams qualify from the Prem and no one else gets close.  They are facing a player exodus in the summer, and may be outside looking in for quite a while.

I shed no tears (except of laughter) for what has befallen Moan Utd.  My team nearly blinked out of existence about 18 months ago so, by comparison, this is definitely WFW territory.  But they needed to do better due diligence on what they were buying - Moyes did nothing diffrently at Utd than he'd done at Everton, which was the problem.  Moyes himself reached for the brass ring, and came up holding his cock.  That's life - he's about 5mm pounds richer, which is a nice cushion on which to land.

Update:  Big moves at the top, consolidation at the bottom

First, the top.  Chelsea took a deliberately weakened side up to Liverpool, and beat them 2-0, aided by a huge dick-stomp by Liverpool's storied captain, noted child molester and all around fuck stick Steve Gerrard.  That wrested control of the title away from Liverpool and planted it firmly in the hands of Man City - who bested my beloved Palace 2-0 in the game that kicked off immediately afterwards.

So, now, if everyone in the top 3 wins their remaining games, Man City will pip Liverpool to the title on goal difference, and Chelsea will finish 3rd.  Of course, there's still time for a couple more twists and turns, so who knows?  Next weekend, Man City host all-but-relegated Norwich; Chelsea host in-danger-of-being relegated Aston Villa, and Liverpool travel to my beloved Palace.  Only Liverpool have any real danger of dropping points, therefore, as the other two face opponents who are dog shit.

At the bottom, Norwich got thumped 4-0 by a Moyes-free Moan Utd, Fulham turned a 2-goal lead into a 2-2 tie at home to Hull and - in the big 6-pointer of the week - Sunderland trounced Cardiff 4-0 (objection pending from Cardiff's poison dwarf owner, presumably).  Sunderland are now out of the bottom 3 - at the expense of Norwich - and have a game in hand.

At this point the bottom 4 are truly adrift from those teams who aren't yet mathematically safe, and do not have much to look forward to in their remaining games.  The 3 teams in the airlock right now - Cardiff, Fulham and Norwich - are also hobbled by having played 1 game more than the 3 teams immediately above them, and also sport goal difference figures that are significantly worse than those above them, which breaks a tie (not in their favour).

My take on this from here is that Man City are going to win the title; Cardiff and Norwich are goners; and Fulham will fall short of their chase to climb over Sunderland to safety.

As for Crystal Palace, they were not at their best on Sunday, but a lot of that was to the credit of Man City who - quite rightly, if you check the price tags of the respective rosters - bested us in every aspect of the game.  Still, without two flashes of sheer brilliance from Yaya Toure, that game likely ends up 0-0.  Looking forward, I think we have a real chance to kill off Liverpool's title challenge next Monday afternoon (2pm CDT), and I would take great joy in them doing so.  Liverpool may have similar offensive qualities as Man City, but they are no where near as good defensively (City were stifling last weekend) and I think we will get some joy from our attacking efforts.

I didn't know that Gerrard is a useless human. Next you'll tell me that Giggs is a wanker, too.

I did note that everybody's favorite, John Terry, was absent from Chelsea's lineup, presumably due to injury.

Terry was "injured" in preparation for the Champions League semi-final second leg on Wednesday.  I'm sure some of his teammates were nervous at his absence.

Gerrard is affiliated with organized crime (a la Sinatra), has fights in night clubs that he starts and his entourage finishes (a la Bieber) and has admitted to affairs with 16-year old girls (a la Clemens).  Pretty much the douchebag trifecta there.

Giggs had an affair with his brother's wife, which might just outweigh all of Gerrard's shenanigans in one fell swoop.

Fulham and Cardiff (AHAHAHHAHAHA) are relegated, by dint of both losing meekly on the road and Sunderland beating Moan Utd (AHAHAHAHAHAHA) 1-0 at Old Trafford.  If Norwich don't win tomorrow (at Chelsea), they are all-but down given the mammoth gulf in the delta of their goal difference to Sunderland's.  Everyone else is safe.

Man City are currently beating Everton 3-1 at Everton go top of the league, for today at least.  Liverpool come to Selhurst Park on Monday to try and keep their challenge alive, needing wins in their remaining games plus help along the way.  Man City can win the league by winning today and in their two other remaining games.

The number of teams who took the day off today is tragic.  Spurs totally folded up and went home, getting dominated by West Ham of all people.  The goals were the biggest examples of not giving a shit, at least until Moan Utd olayed Sunderland to their winner.  I'm sad for their fans and embarrassed for the players.

Tough to see my side relegated.  The whole year, with the exception of the last few weeks, has been horrible.  The team just did not deserve to stay up and it was evidenced today in the lack of urgency on the pitch which was perhaps exacerbated by a more than curious team selection from our third manager of the year.  Hope to see Fulham back in the Premiership after a brief stay in Championship, but some of that will depend on how many players stick around as well as Khan's desire to invest in getting them back up.  I think the worst thing was to have been sent down at the hands of Mark Hughes.

Champions League positions all secured:  the top 2 of 3 from Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea get the full tickets, the one who finishes 3rd, plus Arsenal in 4th, go into the (mostly academic) play-in round, where they will have to overcome some random band of pig farmers from eastern Europe to join in the cash-engorged full tournament.

Hull - by virtue of getting into the final of the FA Cup against Arsenal, who have already qualified for the CL - plus the 3rd/4th placed teams if they lose their play-in round, go into the dreaded Europa League, where they will spend much of the year traveling around eastern Europe playing random bands of pig farmers and generally fucking up their entire season because of ridiculous travel commitments, scheduling nightmares, Russian military aggression and polonium-210 poisoning (just to list some of the non-STD-related issues).

Ha ha, Liverpool screws the pooch. Congrats to Limey and Palace! It would be even more pleasing if it didn't mean that City will probably win the title.

Ha ha, Liverpool screws the pooch. Congrats to Limey and Palace! It would be even more pleasing if it didn't mean that City will probably win the title.

Liverpool fans = Cowboys fans.  Their coach had banked the three points and was talking about running up the score in order to overhaul City's superior goal difference.  He'd also shit on Palace in his post-match comments after they'd just lost at home to Chelsea (highly uncharitable, given that it was Palace's defeat of Chelsea that had opened the door for them to win it all).  At 3-0, they were busy trying to score again, and forgot that the other team are trying too.  Congrats to the Selhurst Park "ultras", who stayed in full voice and drove the team on to strike back.  I was pissing myself laughing at the end.

I was watching it with a buddy and I said, at 3-0, if we score, it'll liven things up and a 2nd could see them crumble.  Liverpool are famous for quick starts, goal blitzes and then quitting after 70 minutes, so it's not like I'm a genius or anything (I am, but that's not the point).  That's exactly what happened - champions are built of stronger stuff than this which is why I am now happy for City to win it because they are a vastly superior team in every aspect, including class, defending, non-racism, non-cannibalism and fan base.

Meanwhile, Liverpool FC has set up a hotline for distressed fans where they can get some counselling.  The number is 1-800 30 31 32 33.  (This works better with UK numbers).

Update:  One set of matches left to play - and not much to play for.

This is a shame for NBC, who smartly and courageously (and perhaps contractually) turned over much of their network to the last round of matches, all played simultaneously at 9am CDT on Sunday.  They are showing every single one and, a week or so ago, that was going to be a frenzy of channel hopping as the myriad of permutations played out.  But now, it's all-but done.

Man City brushed by Villa (eventually) today, putting 4 2nd-half goals past them to win 4-0 and stretch their goal difference advantage over Liverpool to 13 and, more importantly, retake top spot with a 2 point lead.  The title race is now simple:  Liverpool (at home to Newcastle) must win and Mac City (at home to West Ham) must lose*.

* Or, ridiculously, Man City tie and Liverpool win their game by 14+ goals.

At the bottom in the other game today, Sunderland's win over West Brom has vaulted them to safety.  West Brom remain mathematically the only team who can be relegated in place of Norwich, a twist that would require a Norwich win (at home to Arsenal), a West Brom loss (at home to Stoke) AND the winning margin in both games to total 18 or more.

So, it's City's title and Norwich join Fulham and Cardiff out the trap door.  Sorry NBC.

Pretty amazing considering Sunderland had a firm grip on last place as recently as Christmas.

Very true.  Although, to be fair, they had played 2 or 3 games fewer than everyone around them up to about two weeks ago, and they made good use of those games.

Mixed feelings about it with out Fulham in the Premiership.  I'll need to find a side to "follow" for the year until the Whites can make it back to solid ground.  I'll have to limit myself to updates and, if I can find it, streams of the Championship matches while following the boys.

Any suggestions on a side to follow for a bit?  It certainly cannot be QPR or Chelsea, but otherwise open to thoughts...

Ahem!

How about an underdog team from an unfashionable part of London that presaged the recent exploits of Team USA by persevering on a concept of "team" over "stars" and beating the odds to stay in the Premiership?  Oh, and that has the best fans in the Premiership (BFiP?)

Crystal Palace is who you need to follow.  You won't be disappointed.

also, the coach is pretty humble.

Well, just 48 short hours before the new season began, Tony Pulis up and quit Crystal Palace.  Seems that the Palace ownership - who just recently saved the club from the brink of extinction by bankruptcy - wanted to be careful with the club's cash and blend in youth players wherever possible; while Pulis wanted to buy in more establish talent at a higher cost (as was his M.O. at Stoke, according to some of the media and at least one Stoke fan).

So, the Eagles head to the Emirates Stadium tomorrow with Keith Millen - the man who stepped in after Ian Holloway stepped out 8 games into the last Premier League season - once again grabbing the reins in an emergency.

It's never easy being a Palace fan.

Arsene Wenger is too off-putting for me to pull for Arsenal. Has the man ever evinced any joy at all? I'm still pretty much in  anybody-but-United mode. I like Bale a lot and was becoming a Tottenham fan because a) I like Bale, and b) it's a typically (for me) competitive-but-still-falling-short aspirational story for me, but after Bale's transfer I'm less motivated. We'll see who catches my fancy as the season goes on.

I ended up deciding to support Spurs for this season and beyond (if Fulham do not return) in the Premier League.  While I considered Palace, Tottenham won out after Palace ousted Pulis, whom I liked and Spurs signed Yedlin, joining fellow american Brad Friedel.  Several of my friends are also Spurs fans, which played into the decision.  So Come on you Spurs...and in the Championship Come on you Whites - get back where you belong.

Have Spurs actually signed Yedlin? That might be enough to make me hang my hat there.

Tottenham's not a bad choice (my 2nd team).   But...

Now that's the way to start the season: Swansea with their first-ever victory at Old Trafford! Suck it, United.

Damn, that was unfortunate for Palace...wanted to see them pull out the draw.

Pretty good morning of action. My favorite thing about EPL is waking up on the weekend and there is a game to watch.

Mine too, although my wife isn't quite as thrilled.

My fiancee doesn't care, as long as I don't ask her to watch with me. It's just like MLB, except in the morning instead of afternoon/evening.

Conceding injury-time goals is a thing for Palace.  They've done it my whole life.

I've often wondered about going back and trying to calculate how many league titles they'd have if games were 88 minutes long.  Quite a few I suspect.

I ended up deciding on Arsenal.  Went back and forth between them and Spurs, but once Dempsey and Bale left I didn't much care for them.  It is just weird "picking" a team to root for.  I have several friends who are Arsenal fans, and my favorite bartender is a big Arsenal fan too.  Sounds like a fair amount of folks watch Arsenal games at the Richmond Arms.

With uber, I can now get to the Richmond Arms for a fair price, about $14 each way instead of $25 each.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Because your team's logo is a chicken standing on a basketball?
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

No sure if anyone was paying attention to the League Cup yesterday (why would you, right?), but... the MK Dons eked out a win over Man United, 4-0.

Somewhere David Moyes is still laughing in a drunken stupor.

Saw the highlights, and the defending was downright shocking.  van Gaal is trying out a system of 3 centrebacks, but all of them seemed awol.  Meanwhile, they had only 2 strikes on target, both long after the horse had bolted.  They are a mess.

Hospitalised, they said.

'Arry had to abandon his 3 centerback formation in the Spurs match.
