GCL Astros - 2012

It's about that time... Season begins 6/18. Talk away!

Astros over the Cards in the opener, 1-0.  At this stage, it is seems to be mostly Latin signings, with Phillips and Javaris Reynolds the only players to play for the GCL club with Anglo last names.  As a result, I don't know many other names, other than Yonathan Mejia and Darwin Rivera.  Phillips went 1-5 with a steal and 3 Ks.  I mentioned Correa in the Draftee thread, but he went 1-5 with a walk and steal.  The pitchers did a good job, allowing only 6 singles and 3 walks for the game.  Michael Feliz started the game, going 5 innings, allowing 2 hits and a walk versus 2 Ks.

That is going to be quite a dynamic duo of Correa and McCullers (at least for a little while).

I believe OF Teoscar Hernandez is on the roster, too; he had a nice year for the DSL Stros last year, and I know I saw him named to a top prospects list for the league, by BA I thought, but I can't find it now.

Maybe an early pattern for preferred prospects in the GCL?  It seems the preferred position player prospects are Phillips, Correa, Hernandez, Mejia, and Santana.  They have two starts in a row.  All the other positions have a different starter in the first 2 games.

Luhnow also mentioned being impressed with Hernandez when he went down to the DR earlier this year (either on Twitter or in a chat, can't remember).

Correa went 1-4 in today's game, no biggie.  Phillips drew a couple of walks and a couple of steals (3 on the season) out of the leadoff spot.  In other game news, Lo and behold, Chia-Jen threw an inning and is 1 inning shy of his total from last season.

New player in the lineup yesterday-Austin Wates was 2 for 2.  Should be back in Corpus soon.

Correa finally with a game worth writing home about: 2-5 with two doubles, a steal, and his first professional RBI. Congrats kid on the first of 1,700 RBI as a professional ballplayer! (All with the Astros organization, of course)

Ruiz's day at the plate went like this:  walk, single, ground out, walk, strike out.  Not spectacular, but a solid way to start his career.  The patience after missing so much time is a welcome sign.

Just curious, what source do you use? I still only see last night's game on the incredibly unhelpful GCL Astros official site.

Used to be able to go to the Astros MiLB site and see all sorts of helpful stuff... but... hasn't been the case for the last month... The 'easiest' way I currently know to follow day-by-day Astros MiLB happenings it to go HERE and then click on the Astros emblem (will show games in action for the day, as well as box score links for current and completed games).

4-6 with a walk on the day (doubleheader).  Over the last 4 games, he has 7 hits.  Small sample size, but hopefully, he's starting to put it together.

It is and I'm not going to predict his future based on 200 AB as a 17-year old (Mitch Einertson).  But, if him hitting better is a result of making adjustments; whether to the league or coaching, that is a good thing.

Einerston!!  That's who I was thinking of a few weeks ago.  He was the 3b who hit a bunch of homers or something, right?

Got to talk to a Twins scout the other day during a rain delay. He was adamant that they shouldn't even keep stats in the complex leagues (GCL & AZL).  Said stats are meaningless because it is like playing scrimmages instead of games. Same teams, no fans, practice before the game...

#2 for Correa.

Carlos Correa Homers For Second Straight Day (Badler at BAs Prospect Blog)

Correa, 17, is now hitting .222/.267/.384 in 104 plate appearances after getting a hit in his fifth straight game, a stretch that includes four multi-hit games. A slow month in the GCL is nothing to be alarmed about with Correa, but it's an encouraging sign to see him starting to get on track.

McCullers looks strong in his final GCL start:  3 IP 3 H 0 R 1 BB 5 K.  Next stop, Greeneville (looking your way, Appy).

Nelson said McCullers would make one more start in the Gulf Coast League before being moved to rookie league Greeneville.

"That will give him a chance to pitch at night," he said. "We slated it out, and if he does that, it would be three or four starts. If that club makes the playoffs, he will have a chance to get in there and get another start or two. That would be a pretty good summer for him."

Excellent.  Lexington should be pretty fun next year with Correa, McCullers, Ruiz, and Ovando there (I'm guessing).
