Astros at stRangers, 6/21/11
« on: June 21, 2011, 07:46:38 pm »
Top 3rd, Astros ahead 2-1, 1 out, Kepp up with a 2-1 count, Bourne just stole 3rd.

Kepp hit a nice pop to shallow left, sending Bourne home... good guys up 3-1.
And, by the way, f*** off. --Mr. Happy, with a tip of the cap to JimR

Another quiet night in the GZ...

Seems to be the standard these days.  Oh, and man, Jordan Lyles is fun to watch pitch, he has a great rhythm while on the mound.

Just getting settled in... Missed the Astros run T1 and stR run in B2(?). What happened?

I coulda cared less to see last nights game. Tonight's game, however, I was looking forward to!

Bourn double, Kepp single. Very similar to the team's second run. Texas scored on an opposite field HR from Young, very similar to their second run.

That Corporan is an assflapper.

It really is amazing how little catching talent exists in the system. No one is going to confuse Q with Johnny Bench but his absence is killing the team. Hell, I'm ready to get Towles back if that gives you any idea of how bad it is.

What a fucking idiot I am. I have spent the entire game being mildly confused at the lineup seeming to turn over between Barmes and Bourgeois. I keep thinking I must have missed Lyles bunt or strike out or something. Imagine how utterly confounded I'm going to be in 2013.

It wouldn't have killed him to catch the ball on the fly. Barring that, how about at least throw it in the general direction of one of your infielders, preferably the guy who's positioned himself to go out and get the throw.

Lyles' slider is better tonight than I have seen it previously.

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

How could you possibly be watching an Astros at stR game without drinking heavily (a Lyles start notwithstanding) - I can't fathom such a thing?!?!?

Sing you Wade apologists, sing!

Mills is going to get fired after this year and that will be a terribly unjust outcome to a very good baseball man put in an untenable position by an impossible owner and an equally impossible GM.

I am quite positive Wade never, ever told Mills to PH for Wallace with Bourgeois because there was a LHP on the mound, nor did Wade tell him to walk Mr. 0-2 (or 3, at least 2 Ks), Mendoza-line batting Pena to get to Ramirez because there was a 'platoon advantage.' I was willing to give Mills a lot of rope... but... I'm afraid he's just about hung himself with it in my eyes, and it has little to do with what Wade did or didn't give him to work with. Lets just say I've been in a clean-house mood for a bit now...
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

On the flip, Mills probably didn't ask for Wade to trade Oswalt for a package with Wallace as a keystone, a player who Mills seems to believe isn't much better than a lefy/righty platoon first baseman (and one who has displayed little to no power at this stage of his career).

I'm really just saying: shit gets complicated. these guys are all going to be able to deflect blame. maybe it's best for Crane to just bring in a new regime.  The difference between a relatively brief climb from the current nadir to relevance and a sustained dwelling in mediocrity will likely depend on it, one way or another.  Those of us outside the Astros' cloisters don't have enough perspective to come to a conclusion on the ownership vs. operating regime debate.

I am not worried about Mills, if he is that great of a Manager then he will find another job.  I do not think Wade had free reign to do what he wanted, but if you do not think the organization as a whole has not improved during his tenure then we have to agree to disagree.  I do agree that McLane quit on the team once he decided to sell and that hurt the Astros.

Whatever I do or don't think about Wade, I will say this about him: The man was seemingly able to convince McLane of the importance of the draft and trying to sign and develop prospects. At the end of the day, that will be Wade's most positive legacy over his tenure with the club IMO.

I'm pretty sure everyone in the world was screaming that so I would hesitate to give Wade all the credit for that.

Plus, didn't Wade make the Tejada deal that dealt away Scott and Patton?  I know that was really Drayton's deal, but Wade didn't exactly impose his force on him then.

How? With the exception of Carlos Lee this is Ed Wade's team. I realize that he has financial constraints within which he must work. Guess what? There are twenty six other GMs with some sort of payroll restriction and every single one of them has but together a team that is better than the Astros. The three that appear not to have any restrictions at all also have teams that are better, obviously.

I agree, with the caveat that what Wade does with those drafts will be his enduring legacy.

Coincidentally, it is not inconceivable that someone could have watched last night's game and said "wow, that Lyles was a nice acquisition made during Wade's tunure, same with that Bourn guy, and those Kepp and Boojwa guys.  That Wade guy may not be as stupid as some people make him out to be."

And it was a team that was pretty amazingly shitty when he took over. If you start off with a shitty product, have your hands cuffed solidly behind your back, and are told you can't spend much money, odds are you're not going to be able to make a World Series contender in a few years.

Tejada was far more useful to the Astros than Scott or Patton would have been. Scott forced a trade with his petulant, me-first attitude in RR.

Sad to say it, but Mills is probably gone at season's end, along with Wade, who probably deserves it more.

And it was a team that was pretty amazingly shitty when he took over.

This year's team is amazingly shitty. The 2008 team finished 86-75.

The farm was certainly amazingly shitty at the time. (I can't see that it's significantly improved.) And if conventional wisdom is to be believed his brief was impossible: win now without rebuilding or spending very much money. There is no doubt that Wade has been confronted with a very challenging set of circumstances.

This. The farm is looking a little better and producing a few good players. Spending is down, opening up possibilities for future signings when the time is right. It is a full rebuild of the team and the system, IMO. As bad as it is, I think the organization is making positive progress while the MLB team is struggling.

I've given up on the mango policing, dude, fuck it. I have a freezer full of mangos, a kitchen full of mangos, a yard full of mangos. You want some? Come get them. Please.

I will admit to being pessimistic, possibly overly, regarding the organization's prospects. That is partially because there is only one prospect I have seen that I am convinced can make an impact at the major league level: JD Martinez. It is also because I have not seen very many of the lower level prospects that some of you are (justifiably I assume) so excited about. Hell, I haven't even seen Altuve in person. He was not a spring invitee, not to cast any doubts on the talent evaluation that goes on over there.

For the record, that 86-75 team had this roster to work with: http://www.baseball-almanac.com/teamstats/roster.php?y=2008&t=HOU

That team doesn't look much better than the current roster to me, save a few more reliable arms in the bullpen. Lyon was a reliable late innings guy until this year, but Chad Paronto, Dave Borkowski, Oscar Villareal, Wesley Wright, Geoff Geary, and Tim Byrdak weren't exactly high quality bullpen arms either.

The pitching numbers do look pretty similar. The pythagorean for the 2008 team was 77-84, interestingly.

Offensively the thing that really leaps out is this year's lack of power. The 2008 team hit 167 home runs. (You'll remember that Carlos missed a considerable portion of the year yet he hit 28!) Otherwise, team BA, OBP and OPS are reasonably similar.
