Houston Meet 'n' Greet - Sunday, 11/21
« on: November 17, 2010, 11:44:35 am »
Just cos it's the void doesn't mean that we cannot meet in person to "fight like hell".  So, in honour of Joey Trum's latest sojourn down this way, Houston TZers will be meeting up.  All are welcome.

When:  Sunday, 11/21, 4pm
Where: On the patio at El Pueblito Place* (Richmond at Mandell)

“Oh, you like 3D??? Well, here’s a burrito - comin’ right ’atcha!!!”
  - Kenny Powers

* It's a great Tex-Mex place.  I've never eaten there, but the 'ritas are excellent.

The food is at best average (really, it's just not very good) and the margarrrritas are in fact excellent so I think you payasos have hit upon the ideal place.

Nuts. I'll be holding Alkie's purse at the Roger Waters show the night before but I'll be back in River City before the get-together. Drink heartily on my behalf!
I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.

Oh and hey, the band I'm in (Monarchs, but soon to be called "Black Quarterback") is up for some random band of the month thing.  I don't know much about it, or how we got nominated, but go to the website anyway and vote for us.  I don't know what we win, but I was told by our record label guy/pot smoker extraordinaire to get people to vote for us so that's what I'm doing:

What's helping you, I think, is the rest of the bands' myspace pages not working.

I was going to find someone else to vote for, but the silence was killing me.

Monarch Quarterback it is.

Boy, do I feel unhip. I've heard of literally one of the bands mentioned throughout the entire page. There must be 100 bands mentioned one way or another and I know one. I feel like Ron Brand at the CMJ Festival.

I don't care what you call yourselves as long as you guys keep wearing those sweet, white knit turtlenecks.

Hey now. I just looked at the 2010 list and I know a good 20 or so of those bands, not even counting Gary Numan.

Sure, there's 1000+ listed, but...uh...

ETA: Bullshit. At least 50. At least.

Stop calling me Fredo.

As a guitar player, you're right. As a vocalist...ennh. As somebody who comes up with concepts and writes songs, I'm pretty sure that the half-dozen good songs on About Face don't measure up to the Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking, much less what Waters brought to Pink Floyd. What we really can take from this is that Pink Floyd was a group effort and their major contribution ended when the band did.

I know you guys are going to think I'm making this up but not two hours ago someone named David Gilmour wrote in to one of my ads for rental property here. Mr. Gilmour and his party are looking for a comfortable place to spend the days leading up to Christmas:

Arrival Date:   Dec 20, 2010
Departure Date: Dec 24, 2010
# of Nights:    4
# in Party:     6 (6 adults, 0 children)
Name:           David Gilmour

I'll have this guy sign a guitar no matter who he turns out to be. Some accountant from Mankato, MN, is going to be awfully surprised when I accost him with a Sharpie and a Stratocaster.

Enjoy The Wall, RB. It was epic.

We would have been denied some incredible recordings had the two ne'er met.

Gilmour was the cream in Roger Water's bitter coffee.  A little bland on his own, but excellent in combination.

I'm so sick of Flo. I wish she'd go back to the diner where she came from, and leave selling car insurance to  professionals, like lizards and cavemen, or that douche-bag for state farm.

I used to complain about the insurance companies using cartoon characters to sell insurance, as if maybe kids would impact insurance purchases.

Then State Farm started running the DoucheBag wanders around smugging at people campaign and I wished they'd go back to having comic strip characters hawk me their wares.

Apples and oranges.  And what Ron Brand said.
But, no guitarist could carry Gilmour's jock.  Except maybe Howe or Lifeson.

I prefer the song "Apples and Oranges" and pretty much every song before Gilmour joined the band to pretty much every song after Gilmour.  Not to say I don't like later Pink Floyd, but they were a lot more special with Syd imo.

Syd went commando.

And while I appreciate Barrett's contributions to the formation of the Floyd and to psychedelic music in general, the band really didn't reach their potential until he was gone.

Had Barrett not been clinically insane, you might have been right.  But as it was, the band was a trainwreck with Barrett.  He held them back.

The others guys in the band were mostly at an amateur level during the Barrett years and didn't reach their potential for several years even after he left.  Either way, to me Syd was the rare type who trended in the genius direction, really special stuff in his head, whereas waters and the rest were 'merely' good musicians with good ideas and a second-to-none sense of quality control.  We can argue about this more on Sunday.

I would assume the game is 3 20-minute periods, with 2 20-minute intermissions.  So, I would be 3 hours late.

I suggested 4pm because: (a) it would be after the Texans had lost finished their game; and (2) it would be early enough to enjoy the forecasted great weather.

If we want to move the time then now is the..erm...time.  People won't read this thread for much longer on a Friday afternoon.  I may be typing into oblivion as I...erm...type.

If they had played later, it would have been better.  Earlier would conflict with my football watching.

The rock solid official double stamped time is 5:00 at El Pueblito (Richmond and Mandell - across the street from Lucky Burger).

The rock solid official double stamped time is 5:00 at El Pueblito (Richmond and Mandell - across the street from Lucky Burger).

Man, I haven't had a Lucky Burger in years.  On a side note...is El Pueblito smoke/cigar friendly on their infamous patio?
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

A Lucky Burger with a side of fried rice is a good thing.

I'm pretty sure the patio is smoke friendly, but I don't know about if there is a specific cigar policy.
"Holy shit, Mozart. Get me off this fucking thing."
