Yeah, I saw that yesterday.  Not only a great partnership, but rescuing a Houston landmark.

And right down the street from me, to boot.

From the link:  "We're talking about rendering lard and having excellent quality lard."

Robb, you had me at "rendering."

The Tower isn't on Montrose, chron blogger. It's on Westheimer.

Too bad they're not opening their restaurant in the old Felix building.

Why would that suck?

Was Felix's ever good?  When I moved to town in 2003, I had one of the worst tex-mex meals I've ever had at Felix's, and that includes the Border Cafe in Harvard Square, Cambridge.

I can't remember the last meal I ate at Felix, but I ate there many times as a kid and have fond memories of the place and the close family friend (now deceased) who regularly bought us dinner at Felix. The quality of the food may well have declined over the years, but the building itself would seem to be a nice fit for this new Tex-Mex venture. Better than a new Tyson Cole overpriced sushi joint...

I'm not saying the food was amazing but that building has been there for a long time and has quite a bit of history built into it. It meant a lot to people in the neighborhood, I'd imagine. As I get older and see more things torn down that meant something to me as a kid, I have a soft spot in my heart for old buildings with history to them.

You need to try Tex-Mex in Bergen, Norway.

Close, I was once taken to a Tex-Mex restaurant in Basel, Switzerland.  If those guys ever come over here I'm taking them to the Super Walmart for store brand cheese and a Baby Ruth.

Also...craft lard, where has this been all my life?

I had Tex Mex somewhere in the Ginza District of Tokyo. It was great if you like burritos from 7-11. But they had tecate and tequila.

Speaking of Robb Walsh, have any of you Austinites tried this barbecue trailer he mentions in a recent blog post?

Best brisket in the state is a pretty big claim. This may have been cabrera'd in one of the many Q threads here in the past, but I didn't remember it.

Um, yes, about forty times since it opened in December. I've been pimping Aaron's cue since my first bite of brisket that week he opened. No joke, it's the best around and arguably the best brisket in the state of Texas.

In Seattle in 2000, we ordered Huevos Rancheros at what was supposed to be a Mexican restaurant and were given:

One blue tortilla chip, on top of that was
One red tortilla chip, on top of that was
One regular tortilla chip, around which, in a circle was
Some scrambled eggs, covered in
Some orangish Velveeta sauce and
One jalapeño slice to top it off

Sure it was flavorless, but at least it was $11.

Yep, been going there many times as well. The lines can be pretty daunting but with some luck you can get what really just might be the best brisket in Texas. It is consistently excellent, on a par with the best I've ever had anywhere.

I know he's looking for a real storefront and I hope he can keep the quality up as he grows but so far, he has.

Wow. Nice specials. You KNOW this is Mexican food greatness:

Surf & Turf a la Mexicana     £16.45
Grilled fillet steak medallions with king prawns finished in a Cajun spices sauce served with rice and house salad.

and

Tostadas de Chili     £9.95
Deep fried flour tortillas with layers of chilli con carne and cheese served with salad, sour cream, guacamole and refried beans.

The mind reels at contemplation of Kentish guacamole.

Reads to me like Mexican for curry fiends.  Which in Kent (home of the greatest of England's beers - and yours truly), is a large market segment.

I went yesterday and I can't believe it, but this place actually lived up to the hype.  The beef fajitas were incredible, but really everything that everyone at my table got was delicious.  Even the chips and salsa were delicious.  Robb Walsh also stopped by the table and told us about their relationship with Chingo Bling, how they chose the meat, etc.

I think they hit a home run with this one.  It's great for Houston.

Went the last night.  Got there at about 6:15 and was the first to be seated outside (the foyer of the old theater, right on the Westheimer sidewalk).  By 7pm, the place was jammed.  The outside tables are tiny, and no way suited for the 4 people they seat around them.  The strip of tables along the sidewalk itself are the same size and laid up for 3, but all are best for 2 only.  The waitstaff have a little trouble maneuvering around once the tables fill up.

Chips, Salsa, Queso & Guacamole
Totally decent, although the salsa is pure liquid so a little difficult to load up on a chip.  The queso is perfectly executed.  The guacamole (which appeared to be a free offering) was excellent - not perfectly smooth with a pleasing tang of lime to it.

Margaritas
The regular 'rita is quite fruity and a little bit too green for me.  Tastes decent but not spectacular like, say, El Tiempo.  The "skinny" 'rita has a more yellow tint and has more sour in the flavour (my preference), but is half the size.

Entrees
Well prepared, solid tex-mex.  I had the "Original Regular Dinner" which consists of two cheese enchiladas, a tamale, chilli con carne, rice and beans (I swapped out the refried for charro).  All was perfectly cooked and presented.  The enchiladas had something akin to a mole sauce on them, which was delicious.  The tamale was topped with the chilli, which was dry rather than being a gravy.  The rice was fine, including carrots and tomatoes, but not spectacular (it is just rice after all, but then I am a big fan of El Tiempo's green rice).  The charro beans were great - very thick sauce and not at all soupy, including bacon and a nice jolt of spice/pepper.  All together, the entrees were met with similar approval.

Prices
Not bad.  Including tax and tip, plus 2 'ritas each, is was $30/person.

Parking
On the lot it's (complimentary) valet only, but that was an organisational clusterfuck.  Took about 10 minutes to get my car back because of the way they stack them, and because there is no room to bring cars out while others are coming in.

Overall
Thoroughly enjoyable meal and not at all outside of the realms of other good tex-mex in Houston.  I'm not sure that I'd choose regularly to go there over El Tiempo, which is much closer to me, but I will certainly go back.  The menu is still under development (literally, it's printed on regular paper on an inkjet printer), and they say that more items will be added.  A "top shelf" 'rita is needed urgently!

But, like almost any other business venture involving selling to the Houston public, if they don't get their parking sorted out, they'll lose customers.  I can't imagine how congested that area's going to get when the brew pub and "Majorca" open up directly across the street.  When I go there again, I'll take a cab (which will be about $15 round trip but saves me the valet tip).  Conversely, with Royal Oaks, the Anvil and the aforementioned new places opening up, that area will be a well served "park once and walk" option.

Went last night for dinner. I had the stacked enchiladas which were stuffed with chunks of pork. Came with rice and refried beans. The enchiladas were great. Allison had the tacos al carbon (one chicken, on beef). She liked it but wasn't overwhelmed. The fajita didn't seem to have much flavor other than the char on the outside. Her charros didn't have any flavor either.

The queso was perfectly done and delicious. I even got some to take home.

Two people (and a kid), no alcohol, two orders of queso, $50 after tip.

I was there the same time as Limey, but snubbed him by sitting on the other side of the place (which is big).  I liked the movie.  Two, with drinks, queso, $60.  Margaritas all suck, but I drink them anyway, and I don't really care if they're any good or not.  They're not.  Had the regular original, which was outstanding, in a subtle way.  You know he Matt's El Rancho seems tired?  Still good, but tired?  This isn't.  It's as good as Tex Mex gets.

They need complimentary pralines, and we told Walsh to go steal the bowl from Brennan's.

Ate lunch there today on the way to the game, and I was impressed.  I definitely plan on trying it again.

Did it start coming back up around the 8th?

Thankfully I had weighed the food down with a few $10.50 beers.

I had my first bad experience there: went for brunch and ordered huevos rancheros.  Even though the menu specifically said "fried eggs", they came out scrambled.  Grr.  And the margaritas would benefit from a more agave-heavy tequila, but that's just personal preference.

I blame our waitress, who looked exactly like Senor Chang from Community, more than the kitchen for the huevos screwup.  She didn't even ask how I'd like the eggs, which you'd assume was a good sign given the menu.  At least she didn't sit down with us.

I agree on the 'ritas.  Very disappointing.  Go to El Tiempo or El Pueblito Place* for what you're looking for.

In other news:  the lamb poutine at the Queen Vic is fantastic.  They describe it as "Indian chilli-cheese fries".  I'm just pissed they don't open Mondays.

Thanks for this.  I was just thinking the other day that I didn't know where to get my hands on some poutine outside of Montreal.

I've not had the Queen Vic's version but I doubt it's a traditional Quebecois poutine.  Probably still delicious, though.

BB's has a sort of Tex-Mex/Cajun poutine.

I have no idea as to authenticity, but it's delish.

Well, lamb would undermine any sort of authenticity.  And no doubt enhance what is already a fantastic medley of flavors.

The Vic has been at the top of my list for places to try for far too long now.  My gourmand neighbor who works at Pondicheri absolutely loves it.

Parking is a big issue, even though they allow you to park at the animal clinic next door.  It's not a very big place either, so it fills up as quick inside as it does in the parking lot.

Great place, though, and great food.  They also make a Kashmiri Caipirinha*, which I have yet to try but it won't be long (although I suspect strongly that the US-available cachaca is nowhere near as potent as the stuff you get in Brazil).

It's apparently pretty inconsistent from dish to dish and week to week.  I haven't tried the puffy tacos since it first opened and was a little disappointed by them (I also don't like their selections for fillings but you can always go off-menu), but Alison Cook says they've come around.  I've been several times and ordered the cheese enchiladas which are so delicious I simply can't bring myself to order anything else. I've heard that the fajitas are very good as well, but a lot of the other dishes tend to disappoint.

Agreed about the inconsistency, but the beef fajitas have been fantastic every time I've ordered those.

This is all I need to know.  Well, and queso and salsa.  I look no further when pursuing Tex-Mex intended to appease the yuppie crowd.

I don't think I've had the queso.  The salsa is nothing to get excited about (frankly, I do not care for the Houston-style warm salsa).  Apparently, there's a spicier salsa available on request but I haven't taken advantage of it.

The cheese enchiladas have a very dark and meaty gravy that is fantastic.

My experience is similar to Bench's.  I have been 4 times now, had some sort of cheese enchilada combo each time.  I thought they were fantastic as were the refried beans.  I have had the queso with and without meat, it was good nothing special though.  I do agree with the frozen margarita complaints, there were very blah.  Had a couple bites of the puffy taco, which was really good too.

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

I'm a cheese enchilada fan, and theirs taste like cheese enchiladas in mole.  They're good.  They have good chips and salsa.  They need to hand out pralines with the check.
