Bourn takes first pitch for a strike and Brownie informs us Penny is a pitch-to-contact pitcher.  Bourn obliges and places the second pitch in short left for a single.

Pick off attempt from catcher gets by pooholes giving Bourn 2B.

Matsui grounds to 1B, advancing Bourn to 3rd.  1 Out

Feliz with a nice sac fly to LF to score Bourn.  2 Out

Lee rolls over on a 1-0 fastball down the middle, soft grounder to SS.  3 Out

Astros lead!  1-0

Shit.  That doesn't even really qualify as a "lead" then.

Schumaker walks on 3-2 count.

Ludwick laces a liner to LF for a single.

Pujols likes the pitch-to-contact method too.  Follows Ludwicks lead with another HARD liner to LF for an RBI single. Ludwick to 2nd.

Holliday hits into a 6-4-3 DP.  Ludwick to 3rd.  2 Out

Rasmus drills one to Manzella who can't handle it.  E6 scoring Ludwick.

Lopez with yet another single to LF.  Rasmus to 2nd.

Molina DRIVES one to deep center but Bourn absolutly ROBS him with a fantastic over-the-shoulder, running-full-speed-at-the-wall catch!  3 out

STL hopes you enjoyed the temporary lead.  2-1 after 1.

It was on the ground most of the way, but was hammered.  JD said it had a lot of side spin.  E6 for sure, but not an easy play

Is that just making contact with the ball, or getting actual base hits?

Pence uses the small end of the bat and pops weakly foul to pooholes.  1 Out

Blum takes an outside pitch to opposite field, but flies out.  2 OUT

Manzella makes up for his error slaps at the first pitch right to 2B.  3 Out

Six Flags still uses that freaky old dude in their marketing in STL.

You think with Ludwick and Pooholes up next, you'd just throw it down the middle and see what Schumaker can do with it.  Make him get a hit.

Ryan pops up to Matsui.  1 Out

Penny pops up to Manzella in shallow center.  2 Out

Schumaker takes his second walk in as many innings, threatening the Astros count for the season.  Asshole

Ludwick hits a soft grounder to Feliz.  3 Out

2-1 StL after 2

Matsui - grounds easily to Pujols, one down

Feliz - liner over short for a single, man on first, one down

Lee - sporting a barely drunk AVG, Carlos goes 4-6-3.

Lopez - Myers gets two quick strikes, a couple offspeed in the dirt evens, and Ks him looking

Molina - The ladies favorite per JD and Brownie (lots of females in Molina jerseys). I can understand the Ausmus obsession, but Molina...seriously? Molina does his best Pence impression and Ks quickly.

Ryan - 6-3 to end the inning

Nice inning for Myers

Anyone know where I can find the Astros/Cards game on TV?  Living in Beaumont, and ESPN2 has been blacked out here.  FSH has the Rockets.  I don't know where else to look.  It's ironic that people in the Astros viewing area are the only ones in the freaking nation that can't watch this game.

I'm watching it on FSH.

My20 tends to be an alternate pickup channel for local cable companies.  You may have to flip around to the oddball channels to find it (assuming they bought it)

The blackout rules are simple.  FSH has the rights to show the game in the local market.  You live in the Astros local market, so ESPN cannot show the game where you live.

That's what it is here in Midland.  A local channel picks up the FSH feed.

Pence - Brownie informs that even the WSJ is on to Pence's ways. Swinging at 46% of pitches out of the zone. Does his part to maintain that % and Ks. Solid pitch by Penny to get the K.

Blum - Pujols takes it himself to first on an easy grounder. Two away.

Manzella - very briefly shows bunt on ball one, swings away and fouls to even, goes 6-3 to end the inning.

Found it!!  On channel 14 in Beaumont.  It's the channel called "TV14" in my guide and always has "No Data Available" listed permanently as the program it's showing.  I thought it was just a filler channel that wasn't used.

I understand the rules. I don't understand why they try to punish fans and cost themselves revenue by blocking me out of national games and MLB.TV when only 20% of the games are available here. Is giving up exclusivity when the game isn't on really going to hurt their tv deal that much?

They're not costing themselves revenue.  Fox pays a lot of money for the rights to broadcast the games.

They cost themselves my MLB.TV revenue. Why would Fox care if I watched this game online?

The only thing that makes sense is if it is too logistically complicated to black out only games that are actually available, but it's 2010 for heaven's sake.

Greg Lucas is old and bitching about technology

Penny - Has a lot to live up to as an opposing pitcher against the Astros, but looks bad striking out on 4 pitches.

Shumaker - over under on swings going to this AB? 1? Shumaker swings at ball 3...and swings again grounding to Kaz. Money goes to the over.

Ludwick - flys out to right on first pitch.

It's not that they haven't picked it up - I have a FoxSports affiliate, they are showing the Rangers. I live in Ranger's territory - I am 20 minutes from the stadium. I don't want to call my cable company, I want to throttle MLB.

Because Fox pays a lot of money for the rights to broadcast the game.  Having content that people actually want to watch is pretty big when it comes to attracting advertisers.

It IS that they haven't picked it up.  Many cable companies (and DTV, etc) will buy the alternate feed to satisfy their Astro fan customers when they're playing Rangers games, and vice versa.  Yours apparently has not.  You may not want to call them, but I bet others have.  Fox knows that if you can get it on mlb.tv, you're much less likely to call and demand their extra feeds from your cable co.  They paid handsomely for that exclusivity for that very reason.

You also live in Astros territory.  If the game is not shown locally, it's the fault of your cable/satellite provider, not MLB.

Explain to me how it would hurt Fox for me to watch this game on MLB.TV anymore than it hurts them for someone out of market to watch it online.

Then game is not available in Dallas, where I am. It's availability in Midland is just irrelevant blather.

Bingo!  This is exactly why I get the Astros out here in Midland.  My cable provider carries FSSW, but the people want to watch the Astros, so they also buy the FSH feed for Astros games.

It's likely that half of America is Astros territory. Dallas is probably Astros, Rangers, Cardinals, Cubs, Royals, Rockies and who knows what other teams territory. The territories aren't exclusive, and there is apparently little to prevent clubs from claiming far-flung areas as their territory. Ask Craig about how many teams claim Las Vegas as their territory.

Edited to correct a consequential typo.

Then game is not available in Dallas, where I am.

Doubt this is true.  Know any neighbors with DTV?  See if they can see the game on 680.  My bet is they can.

Explain to me how it would hurt Fox for me to watch this game on MLB.TV anymore than it hurts them for someone out of market to watch it online.

It doesn't necessarily affect Fox, it affects MLB.  If Fox doesn't get exclusivity, then they won't pay as much to MLB for broadcast rights.  Jeez, what part of broadcast rights is so fucking difficult for you?

Then game is not available in Dallas, where I am. It's availability in Midland is just irrelevant blather.

It IS available.  You local provider is choosing not to show it.

This is extremely helpful information - glad I ignorantly ranted about this. I had no idea that A) it would be on DTV or B) that shit worthless time warner could even have picked it up.

not any more.  bourn hit a double to cf and reached 3rd on an error, then Kaz left him there.

Towles - grounds to third (distracted by phone call informing me that the Astros are getting national writers following the team counting on the worst start ever)

Myers - Ks on an outside FB

MB - fielders move in, MB watches the first four pitches (2-2) before grounding just foul on the third base side and catching the throw from third on the foot. Bourn's liner to left center gets by Rasmus, Bourn gets third. 2B with one base error.

Kaz - right up the middle but goes 6-3 to end the inning. That makes three innings in a row I believe.

I was assuming that essentially Fox was choosing not to show the game here - wasn't even aware that anywhere had multiple fox affiliates, although the whole thing makes sense now. Thanks HH and Lurch.

Myers back at it...

Pujols - leading off the inning for the second time. Myers gets ahead of Pujols but gives it back and battles with a full count. NICE K by Myers. Great curve.

Holliday - First pitch FB on the hands jams him. Easy ground ball out.

Rasmus - JD/Brownie keep taunting the BBGs counting Myers consecutive outs (been at it for a few batters now). MB retires the side on a lazy fly.

Brownie jabs the BBGs again before signing off.

It's not that they haven't picked it up - I have a FoxSports affiliate, they are showing the Rangers. I live in Ranger's territory - I am 20 minutes from the stadium.

Really?!? It's on Fox SW up here in Denton. Maybe it's because I'm "further" from the stadium from you.

Greg Lucas starts jabbing the BBGs in the eye in case JD/Brownie haven't got them up yet.

Feliz - Easy 6-3

Lee - Great pitch by Penny gets Lee watching the first strike, flys out easy on the second pitch.

Pence - Gotta love these binary averages sported by Lee and Pence. Pence flys to second. Inning over.

Pence and Lee are really getting on my nerves. They're not even close to getting out of their slumps. As I said yesterday or earlier today on the TZ, I'd never throw Pence a strike.

I only have 1 150" TV. I didn't even know clicking through channels was an option until 5 minutes ago and didn't want to start world war 3, especially if it's a wild goose chase.

I don't know what your're complaining about, your wife wasn't going to let you watch the game anyway.

Yep, don't seem to be on there. So far clicking through unsuccesful. I'm moving in July and I'm pretty sure I'm done with Time Warner after this - been wanting to switch to DirecTV for football anyways. Love of tivos had been holding me back but it's just not worth dealing with Time Warner anymore.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna switch (having found the game notwithstanding). The sunday ticket is the real thing. Has anyone tried the Clear internet? It's available in Dallas and seems like it might be a good internet option with the DTV.

Lopez - singles between Kaz and 2B. Streak over (13 consecutive batters). Man on first, no outs.

Molina - hits to Manzella who gets a little cute with it trying to get two and gets none (Kaz comes off the bag). Everett lite gets his second error of the night. Man on first and second, no outs. Myers stays in

Ryan - bunting, bunting, bunting...successful sacrifice 5-3. Men on second and third, one out.

Penny is coming out for Stavinoha

Stavinoha - IF in. Works a full count and Ks. Huge. Quickly. Two outs, two runners in scoring pos.

Schumaker - Surprisingly swinging on the first strike. Ball. Swinging again on a breaking ball in the dirt. Brett climbs a ladder and sees a foul ball. Foul again. Ball low and outside. Fouling away. (This AB is longer than most Astros' innings). Fouls again. KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKs.

Nice outing by Brett. In the immortal words of Brett Myers, "Boom, outta here."

Brett and I are done. If anyone wants to take PBP, its yours.

The Pirates offensive numbers are very nearly as awful as the Astros. And I think Oswalt will be pitching the first of the three games.

I don't know if Wade really deserves it, but he will probably be fired.  And honestly, it's probably the right thing to do and anyone who gets worked up over it needs to rethink their expectations.

So he doesn't deserve it, but he should be fired anyway?  You're a hardass.

Firing Ed Wade would suddenly convince Carlos and Hunter to hit?

I think that Drayton understands exactly why this club is in the shape it's in, and I think he understands that Wade/Heck have a plan to get it fixed. And I think he understands that it will take time. So I would actually be surprised if Wade gets canned.

Now, if Drayton sells to somebody, all bets are off.

Carlos does not like Bob
Carlos has a kinder, gentler swing this year.  He has given up hitting those poor baseballs.

Odds that we'll see anything other than slider away?

Another sucker bet, 3 straight to end it.

I said I wouldn't be upset about it.  I'm not calling for his head in the comments section of the Chronicle.

You said he didn't deserve it but should be fired anyway.  That's a dumbass statement, and you should be appropriately smacked for it.

this new FSH Astros ad campaign is a capital offense. someone should get fired for it.

Ed Wade. Sure it isn't his fault, but he deserves it anyway.

First one was a called strike, but did look wide to me.

It was, but it looked (and pfx confirmed) outside.  Hunter sure as hell hasnt earned that call

Once they called that pitch a strike, Hunter has no chance.

The Phillies did alright when Ed just planted the seeds for them and then got canned.

I really don't think it's THAT crazy to suggest the GM (in his 3rd year) of the worst team in baseball should be fired at the end of the year.

But I'll just go back to lurking.  And we can just keep blaming everything on Pam Gardner.

What exactly was Ed Wade supposed to do with a team full of expensive veterans with no trade clauses and a very limited budget?

Not mad.  Just going to disagree with everybody and exit.

Hey - who knows, maybe the Astros will turn it around and win 80 games and my whole point will be moot.

Right?

Should release all the players and bring up the Round Rock squad to fill out the major league roster.

Carlos Lee, a 12th-year veteran with a career .290 avg and .501 slg, is currently hitting .103 below the Mendoza line. Hunter Pence isn't doing much better. That trend will reverse itself at some point in the near future, and the offense will score some runs.

This team is better than this.

yep. true fans will still be here if the team goes 0-162. i never understand and have no respect for the people who feel some sort of entitlement to win.

Most Houstonians who pay passing attention to baseball don't understand how good 1997-2005 was.  Instead they view it as a minimum acceptable standard and a period of underachieving.

I take it you haven't been watching the Round Rock box scores. They've been shut out a couple of times already, too.

One of the main reasons I still put up with Dish Network is because they're the provider up here in NoTx who'll get me the most Astros games.

I wanna see 'em win, but at the same time, I'm just glad I can see 'em at all. I really miss going to games at MMPUS, and I've got nothing against the Rangers, but I just can't get into 'em. They aren't the home team for me.
