Ed Wade live chat at 1:00 today
« on: September 29, 2009, 12:40:35 pm »
Ed Wade is participating in a live chat hosted by Pinwheel at the Chron in about 20 minutes.  Not sure there is a ton worth asking that he'd actually answer, but thought I'd note this nevertheless. LINK

Just got in a question about Sean Berry.  My question about whether he'd be able to keep Pinwheel happy for more than 48 hours went un-posted...

A couple of decent tidbits from the chat.

On Wesley Wright:

"Wesley is going to winter ball in the Domincan Republic and he'll be a starter down there.   Again, this is another very bright kid with a lot of ability.   He told me he was a starter in high school and got moved into the bullpen with the Dodgers because they had a glut (lucky them!) of starting pitching prospects.   Wes wants to start and we would love to have him battling for a spot in spring training.   He's the kind of kid you pull for."

On Koby Clemens (re question: "Do you see Koby Clemens having a shot at making the club in Spring? Where does he factor in with the long-term plans at Catcher?"):

"Koby had an absolutely incredible season at Lancaster and everyone in the organization is proud of the way he's handled himself.   No, he won't make the club out of spring training.   We need to find the right position for him to play.   Bobby Heck has stressed letting him play first base exclusively and I think his rationale makes a lot of sense."

The "other facets" they wanted to evaluate was not the call ups.

Ed Wade: I believe you treat veteran players with respect. Miguel and Geoff Blum have been warriors for us all year and they deserve to see it through to the end. They're both free agents trying to put their best feet forward. And, we want to win as many games as possible and finish on a high note. The Manzellas and Johnsons and Maysonets will see their opportunities come soon enough.

He didn't specify in which categories.  I could see 40 walks and 40 errors.

Trying to answer questions from idiots must really get tiresome, unless you are one yourself, then you can continue long after the gm has left.

There was a particularly dim "ryan" that kept whining about his questions not getting any attention, and I couldn't help but wonder...

I don't think you have to wonder at all.

Innuresting about Koby.  He's certainly no Lance, but could he be a stop-gap after Twinkie retires?

I could be wrong, maybe one of the Bus Drivers can correct me here, but it seems like the best candidates in the system right now for a future big bat, middle of the order run-producer, are:
Jonathan Gaston, by far the best shot,
followed by more long-shot types:
Koby Clemens
Jason Castro (book's still out on how much power he develops)
Drew Locke maybe?
JD Martinez maybe?

I think Steele might also have that kind of potential, but he was injured enough this year that his numbers don't really reflect it.

One guy who was drafted as a 1B last year but was injured most of this year is Phil Disher.  Serious power there.

I forgot about Disher, and I didn't realize Steele was a potential middle-order guy, thought he was more of a speed/gap power guy.

DeLome also has hit a lot of HR the last couple years but it sounds like he has a long road ahead to master the other aspects of hitting- and the HR numbers are still seen as somewhat flukey from what I recall...

Injuries aside the Astros view Steele as a true 5-tool guy.

Do we see him in CC next year or starting out in Lancaster because of the missed time due to injuries?

I think CC is a given.

In limited time spread out through the season he tore up the league offensively.  My impression is that he got enough work this year to move him up.
