Something Like Sunday Morning Trivia
« on: February 08, 2009, 08:42:49 am »
Had a water pipe break upstairs a few weeks ago (water has to go somewhere and in this case it went through the floor and into the dining room below, totally wiping out ceiling, walls and carpet) and we finally got the insurance check.  We decided to go with wood and tile flooring which my wife picked up yesterday so I figure today I'm going to be busier than a set of jumper cables at a south Austin wedding.

So...here's a little "assignment" to keep you busy if you're wanting some trivia.  Usiing the letters of the alphabet (in alphabetical order of course) make 3 lineups using Astros/.45's players.  !st lineup will be A thru I,  2nd will be J thru R and the last will be S thru A again,  Use 9 players, each starting with a different last name.  Since you're not the Genius, the pitcher has to bat 9th.  The only problem you'll encounter is that Houston has never had a pitcher whose last name started with "I".  You can use a first name for "I" or you can use a pitcher that the Astrtos drafted, signed and who played in their organization but just never made it to the big leagues with them.  (I have someone particular in mind here).

Or you can say "that's really stupid" and ignore this post completely.

So, let me get this straight, the pitcher has to bat ninth, but the other players do not have to bat A - H?

"A" has to lead off, "B" bats 2nd and so forth.  Alphebetical order.  2nd lineup begins with "J" batting 1st and "R" pitching.  3rd has "S" leading off and then we make the turn and you have an "A" pitching and batting 9th.

Funny...IIRC, that guy was traded numerous times.  In fact, I could swear he was traded from the Cubs to the A's and back again...in multi-player deals.  Guess the "hype" lead to the "want" by GM's...or maybe pitching knowledge/makeup as a roster filler for the younger guys on a AA-AAA club?

The I pitcher is Eric Ireland.

I actually had another in mind.  LHP, top 5 draft pick in the mid-80's.  If not mistaken, arm injuries played an all too familiar role in his career.  Either traded to or signed as a minor league FA with the baby bruins.

Scott, Tony  LF
Taveras, Willy  CF
Uribe, Jose  SS
Valdespino, Sandy  RF
Walling, Denny  3B
Xinter, Alan  1B
Yelding, Eric  2B
Zaun, Gregg  C
Astacio, Pedro  RHP

It really petered out here at the end.  And if the Astros ever had a player whose last name began with "X", I don't remember it.

There was none, not with just the Astros but in all of baseball.   I like what you did with Zinter.

Now my question would be, has any team ever started a lineup that actually went A-I (or B-J, etc.)? I have no idea, just asking. Good luck with the home repairs, WD.

Seriously doubt if that has ever happened.  The nickname "Killer B's" was very appropriate as Houston has had as many as 6 players in a starting lineup whose last name started with B.  The second most common is M.  On several occasions they have sported a lineup in which 5 players last names started with M.

Nope.  He was waived off the 40-man, claimed by the Cubs who promptly traded him to the A's for Matt Stairs.  After a year (or maybe two?) in Sacramento, he was released; played indy ball for a year (or maybe two?) ... Chico, I think ... then signed back with the good guys where he pitched some out of the bullpen before disappearing forever.  Only one trade in the whole story, and it was a pretty low-level one.

i doubt i would have remembered him.

There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth by some parties when he was let go. Him and Aaron ??? (big first baseman with little power). Seems the Astros' talent evaluators knew what they were doing after all.

McNeal.  He was actually traded ... to the Pads for the forgettable Christian Beroa.
