« on: June 08, 2008, 02:30:54 am »
This information has been compiled from lists at MLB.com and Baseball America.  Where there are discrepancies between the lists, I've gone with the one from MLB.com. I'll try to keep this updated every couple of days.  Please let me know if anything is incorrect, I've missed a nickname, etc.

This will not be useful unless you can fix the horizontal alignment.  Word wrap is killing you by adding space in only one column at a time.

Not sure what you mean.  Checked it on two computers and it comes out in proper column/row format.  Anyone else having a problem with it?

Looks pretty normal to me....the 'Signed' column needs to be moved up one space though and possibly the 'Date of Birth'
Reading Richard Justice and respect level for Richard Justice are inversely related

Looks good. Thanks for posting this. Occasional updates would be great too.

Btw, a big thanks to everyone who contributes to this site. It greatly adds to the quality of time that my girlfriend says I waste.

You tipped me off to the problem.  If youmake the page wide enough, everything lines up (including the "signed" column).  Make it narrower, and line wrap kills you.

Wolf (round 26) and Diaz (round 30) signed.

Link

Article says a total of 12 signed.  That's higher than what we have listed.

Your table is a little hard to read.  Are you using a widescreen monitor?  Because on a laptop or regular monitor, the table is squished and off.

I'm on a laptop and see it just fine.

Noe, check your PM.

Additionally, I emailed my spreadsheet (in Word format) to Duman and Jacksonian, so perhaps they can post it in a more user-friendly format.

Here is what I see.

The word wrap is off, notice the names like "Davidson, Charles" going to two lines.  That drops the next column of information into the wrong setup diagonally.  However, that may be a Firefox browser format problem or the fact that I use "normal" as my text view for Firefox browsers (and should use deceased or something else).  So no worries, just saying it's not working for me.

ET: I decreased my text view to very small and the alignment is perfect now.  But I need bifocals to read it.  Bummer.

I have a widescreen monitor at work and it is set to 1280 x 960.  It looks perfect when I maximize the browser.  Well done OSF.

Per the 6/10/08 Game Notes, the Astros have signed another 10 draftees (Austin-2, Priday-11, Hulett-12, Godfrey-3, Simunic-17, Jackson-29, Rummel-31,  Rivers-37, Metroka-47, Lehr-49), making a total of 22 of 52 signed to date.

This information has been compiled from lists at MLB.com and Baseball America.  Where there are discrepancies between the lists, I've gone with the one from MLB.com. I'll try to keep this updated every couple of days.  Please let me know if anything is incorrect, I've missed a nickname, etc.

I'll continue to add 'yeses' as I see 'em, but all are welcome to add to the list if they hear of additional signings.

Background on Jordan Lyle from hometown paper.

Quote
Hartsville sports fans have become accustomed to hearing the name Jordan Lyles. Lyles was a member of Hartsville High School’s state champion baseball team in 2007.

He broke every major school receiving record in the 2007 football season for the Foxes on his way to an all-state award and a trip to the Shrine Bowl. And, he was a preliminary choice for McDonald’s All-American in basketball at the beginning of the 2007-08 season.

He finished the 2008 baseball season with a 1.86 ERA and a record of 7-2.
Always ready to go to a game.

Good work OSF!

One nit, how can Kirkland Rivers be a RHP that is L/L? Is it an Aggie thing?

It's his other left.

Maybe he should try RHP.  His ERA at A&M this spring was over 8.
Always ready to go to a game.

Now that there is funny!  Must be an Aggie posting at MLB.com...

Quote
"1112      Rivers, Kirkland   Texas A&M U   RHP   L/L   6'01"   195   1986-01-06   SR"  LINK.

Game notes have him listed as RHP as well, so checked the A&M website which list him as LHP/OF.  Will make the change on the next update.

Although I didn't catch that one, there were a couple of positions listed for players that didn't jive with BA either and seemed a tad questionable.  Any of those in the know feel free to edit (or let me know and I'll edit).
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

22 of 52 signed within a week -- is than an unusually high percentage to be in the fold so quickly?

Depends on the draft, if you draft alot of 4yr SRs, then it is low, if you draft mostly HS players it can be considered high...  It is about what you would expect at this point, I think.

There is still 2 SRs left to sign, and then the intertesting part starts, how many of those that can play somewhere else choose to take the money offered and play in the minors.

You typically want to look at what is your % for non-4yr SRs and top 15 round picks.  The more you sign of each, typically the better.

Looks like the 7th round pick is going to be in the fold:

Quote
Gaston has not agreed to a contract with the Houston Astros. He said he would sign when he arrives in New York on Tuesday. Gaston will play for the Tri-City Valley Cats in Troy, N.Y.

“I’m still looking at the contract,” he said. “I will sign.”

Gaston was drafted by the Astros in the seventh round of the major-league draft on Friday. He said he was expecting to sign for more than the $120,000 slot.

“I’m definitely excited,” he said. “Now I get to look forward to my pro career.”

Update on Seaton's negotiations:

Quote
Seaton, who is a Tulane University signee, said he will be strictly a pitcher wherever he goes. He said he has had talks with the Astros several times since he was selected, and the sides will continue to talk.

“It’s a tough decision, but I know it will work out in the end,” Seaton said. “Everybody has been really happy for me, and my friends and family are standing behind me through thick and thin. They are hoping for the best for me.”

Always ready to go to a game.

OSF is really doing a great deal of the work on that this year.  I just get nuggets from time to time.

OSF does damn good work everywhere.

question--do y'all think mgmt will ask DQ to help convince some of these guys to sign? i'm thinking of Seaton especially.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

I don't think DQ is going to be used at all with anyone.  Last year, they used Nolan with at least one of the lower drafted kids who signed (Pitkin).  That is not an option this year.  I would wonder about Bags or Biggio being used.

However, with Seaton, it will come down to the $$$.  I hear Green is his favorite color.  It will either be green cash & Greeneville or he will pitch for the Green Wave of Tulane.  Just pure speculation, I would put his chances of being signed at 60%.  He has stated he is an Astro fan, that might carry some weight with him.

DQ is too radioactive. I don't think they'll come anywhere near him. I agree with Duman that Bags and/or Biggio might be brought to bear on the young man, though.

Just to be a contrarian, that was the story with Patton, too, wasn't it? And look where he wound up.

I would expect he is looking for late 1st or early 2nd round money which would be between $750K & 1 Million.

Patton was reported prior to the draft of being solid to Texas and wanting 1st round money.  He signed for late 2nd round money and stated he wasn't that solid to Texas and didn't know where that was coming from.  Alot of this is a game played by advisers & parents to position their player in the best possible spot. The Patton's had their figure going into negotiation and they were able to get close to it.

I am sure the Seaton kid and his adviser have let the Astros know what they are looking for.  The Astros seem optimistic about getting him signed.  It would be a coup if the do.

I heard close to what Lyles got, which was 900K.  Could be idle speculation though because the source I have on it doesn't really know, he's just guessing.

Was this guy really thought of a strong-lean-to-college like Patton.  I don't read all the reports, but I never got the impression that he was a sure first round talent who was avoided due to signability.  I just assumed he was a guy that the experts had slightly higher than the clubs drafting.

Per the the Chronicle (thanks for the heads-up Richies Dad), the Astros have signed another 2 draftees (Shuck-6, Pettus-27), making a total of 24 of 52 signed to date.  Additionally, the Tri City Valley Cats have released their roster (LINK) and show both Steel-4 and Gaston-7 on it, so I am adding those as well for a total of 26 of 52 "signed."  [I have not seen anything on Steel, but read a quote from Gaston yesterday that he was signing on Tuesday].  I have also "recategorized" Rivers as a LHP/OF per previous discussions in this thread (although I think he was selected as a pitcher).

Kody Hinze is on the Greeneville Roster.  He wasn't drafted but was signed as a NDFA out of Angelina JC.  He played for Angelina in 06 & 07 but I can't find where he played in 08.  He is a 1b who was drafted in the 05 draft by the Pirates as a DFE.  He didn't sign and hasn't been drafted since.

In 07, he set Angelina records in batting average (.458), HR (15) and had the second most RBI (61).  He is their career leader in HR (27) and RBI (98).

He prepped at Nimintz HS in Houstonl
Always ready to go to a game.

Zackery Grimmett is also listed on the Greenville roster.

Thanks Towlie.  Will add him on the next update.

With Grimmetts inclusion on the Greenville Astros roster (thanks for the heads-up Towlie), the Astros now have 27 of the 52 draftees "signed."  This includes 6 of the top 10 picks and 14 of the top 20.  The 4 top 10 picks who remain unsigned are: Castro-1 (who is currently participating in the College World Series for Stanford), Davidson-3 (Milton HS, Georgia), Seaton-3S (Second Baptist HS, Houston) and Dydalewicz-8 (Lake Travis HS, Texas).

Astros Gamenotes announced the signing of Steele and Gaston today, noting that "Houston has now signed 24 of the 52 players from their 2008 First-Year Player Draft class."  This is a bit different from information in the Chronicle which noted that Shuck and Pettus had also signed (which would make 26).  The other 'discrepancy' from Draftees and Status list is the inclusion of Grimmett (due to his inclusion on the Greenville Astros roster).  Will keep checking...

Chalk another one up that's headed for Greeneville. I am excited about this signing.

So that leaves Davidson and Seaton as the only question among the top 10 picks for the Astros... very nice info indeed!

Well, they still have to sign Castro.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

I have little doubt Castro will sign.  I'm a little surprised but pleased about Dyalphabet and still expect Davidson to ink.

Is that hopeful wishing or do you have some extra reason to expect he will?

Also I recall thinking Seaton was a long shot to sign when they drafted him, yet I recall hearing lots of favorable (nothing certain) comments about the Astros chances of signing him.  As a result there was some debate around here about that too.

That would be pretty sweet to sign all the picks from round 1 through 13.

I'm down on Seaton signing at the moment.  It feels like a flier pick to me.  I'm fairly certain they drafted Davidson in the 3rd in part because they thought they could get him to sign for money in that area.  I actually thought that Dy... and Seaton would be the hold outs.  Time will tell, but that they've gotten 4 of the 6 high schoolers from the top 10 is terrific.

I am sure Cabrera is somewhere on this but, http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bb/5825459.html

"With Seaton "it's a time process," Heck said."

What exactly does this mean?

Cabrera was probably all over this one too, but interesting comments none the less, http://www.hcnonline.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=19765560&BRD=1574&PAG=461&dept_id=635506&rfi=6

"Seaton, who is a Tulane University signee, said he will be strictly a pitcher wherever he goes.

I wouldn't be surprised if Biggio and/or Bagwell were dispatched to have a talk with him.

Perhaps in reference to the fact it will cost above slot to get Seaton out of his Tulane commitment, and those deals are generally not announced until the end of the signing period so as not to disrupt the rest of the slotting...

With Dydalewicz signing earlier this week (thanks for the heads-up Einertson), the Astros now have 28 of the 52 draftees signed.  The Astros have now signed 9 of their 12 picks from the first 10 rounds and 16 of their 22 picks from the first 20 rounds.  The 3 unsigned picks from the top 10 rounds are: Castro-1 (still in the CWS and cannot sign yet), Davidson-3 and Seaton-3S.

News about signings at Astros.com and Chron.com has slowed to a crawl, so any notes on progress would be appreciated.

With Stanford's elimination out of the CWS, hopefully Castro will be in the fold soon.
Always ready to go to a game.

Metroka is playing, so he has probably signed.

Seems WadeSmith is optimistic as well.  Chron.com LINK

Quote
"Bobby Heck's optimistic we'll be able to get something done in short order," Wade said. "Every indication we had from Jason going into the draft was he was anxious to sign and begin his career.  "I would assume this would be something that would be done in short order and get him playing and advance through the system."

And although he's not the 'most reliable' source, I get the impression that Pinwheel is getting some vibes that Seaton and Davidson may sign as well.  LINK (from a question in the comments of his blog... Read at your own risk!).

Quote
Q (Trey): RJ, Have you heard anything on Ross Seaton and how long do you think it will be before we get him and Jason Castro signed up?
A (Pinwheel): Patience, friend. All the top ones will be signed. There's a pecking order to this stuff as it relates to other high picks.

Chalk another one up that's headed for Greeneville. I am excited about this signing.

Wow, never heard of that site but that's an incredible amount of info, thanks. Nice especially to read such in-depth scouting reports on the lesser-known guys. Pretty interesting about Steele:
Quote
But some scouts believe he could be a steal in the fourth round as he is a superior center fielder, has above-average arm strength, gets down the line in 3.9 seconds and can turn on a fastball. Consistent contact continues to be the elusive part of Steele’s game. ...Steele’s upside is significant and he could be an all-star talent if it all clicks.

"We incorrectly reported recently that Dydalewicz had “come to terms” with the Astros. While the family is optimistic an agreement will be made, it hasn’t happened yet."

The Tuscon Citizen had these comments on Dydalewicz.  LINK

Quote
"We are still in negotiations," said Dydalewicz, an eighth-round pick of the Houston Astros from Lake Travis High School in Spicewood, Texas. "At the end of the month, hopefully we can get this over with."  Reports that Dydalewicz signed a contract were incorrect, he said. He's looking for a $500,000 signing bonus and future college tuition to be paid as part of his talks with the Astros.
Keeping Dydalewicz would be a big deal for the Wildcats, who have lost nine of their 18 current and incoming players who were drafted three weeks ago.

No new news on signing, just updating to remove Dydalewicz from the signed list (thanks for the heads-up on the retraction Einertson).

News about signings at Astros.com and Chron.com has slowed to a crawl, so any notes on progress would be appreciated.

With Stanford's elimination out of the CWS, hopefully Castro will be in the fold soon.

Per JdJO in the live chat today:

"If I'm correct, the Astros' area scout was supposed to be in Castro's home today or yesterday. I was visiting my ailing mother, so my calls over the last three days are all running together. I will tell you that I spoke with Bobby Heck, the scouting director, yesterday or Monday and he told me he was real optimistic about signing Castro soon. I think he was going to visit with Davidson this week. He said it's still looking promising with Seaton and Dydalwicz. Once I settle back into my routine, I'll start bugging more of my sources more often."

JdJO wrote about a couple of the draftees in the Chronicles "Astros Notes" today.  LINK.

Quote
Castro gets visit: Joe Graham, the Astros’ North California and Nevada area scout, visited with first round pick Jason Castro on Wednesday.  “It went well,” Astros scouting director Bobby Heck said of Graham’s visit with Castro. “It went very well. That’s a better way to put.”  ***  “I would expect to meet with the family again on Sunday or Monday,” Heck said.

He also wrote that Seaton was at Minute Maid (this evening?) and said he was "optimistic" about signing with the Astros.

WadeSmith of Castro and Seaton:
Quote
“We’re still optimistic on both he and (Ross) Seaton and a couple of the other guys who are still out there that we’ll get them signed in short order and get them in our system,” Wade said.

Jim Callis thinks Seaton will sign:
Quote
I think he will. Don't think the Astros would have taken him in the third round if they weren't prepared to meet his asking price—even after their struggles to sign players last year.

As a compensation pick for not signing a player last year, if the Astros do not sign Seaton they will not receive draft compensation for him next year.  They had every incentive to draft a player there that would sign.
Goin' for a bus ride.

I noticed last week that few of the top guys have signed.  Is this likely keeping the Astros from signing Castro, and is Castro's signing a necessary precursor to some of the other picks, such as Davidson, Seaton, and Dydaleiwicz?  Everything seems to have come to a standstill.

Per McTaggart's 'afternoon' blog today (Astros waiting to hear from Castro):

On Castro:

"I talked to (scouting director) Bobby Heck about two hours ago (3 p.m.) and we're continuing to make progress on it, literally," Wade said. "It's hour-to-hour at this point in time.  "We're going to remain optimistic we're going to get him out in the system sooner rather than later. Where we're at right now, we've put the appropriate package for them to consider and hopefully they give us a nod in the short term and he gets out playing."

And "progress is being made" on Seaton and Davidson (no word on Dydalewicz):

"It's partly market-driven at this point," he said. "Guys want to see what's happening around them, and we as a club want to see what's happening around us to see if where we're at is appropriate.  "I'm going to remain optimistic on all these grounds that we're going to run the table and get all these guys done. Every conversation we've had has been carried a clear indication they want to wear an Astros uniform."
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

I assume they'll just take the opportunity to bitch about the Astros not drafting Smoak.

With the signing of Castro, the Astros now have signed 28 of their 52 draft picks.  All but 5 of the top 20 picks have been signed, and the it is generally expected (per Pinwheel and McTaggart) that Davidson (rd 3), Seaton (rd 3s) and potentially Dydalewicz (rd 8) will be signed as well.

Additionally, ran across a site called PGCrosschecker.com which includes signing status and bonus for the top 10 rounds.  LINK.  Hasn't been updated to include Castro yet, but does show the following Astros:

Lyles (rd 1s) - $930,000;  Austin (rd 2) - $715,000;  Steele (rd 4) - $267,000;  Duncan (rd 5) - $185,000;
Shuck (rd 6) - $150,000;  Gaston (rd 7) - $150,000; Cruz (rd 9) - $150,000;  Holloway (rd 10) - $150,000.

If correct, the Astros paid significantly more than most of the other teams from rounds 7 - 10, and Castro is only the 3rd pick in the top 10 to sign to date [Beckham - $6,150,000 (Rays - 1st overall); Skipworth - $2,300,000 (Marlins, 5th overall).

The site also has some scouting reports on the draftees from the top 15 rounds as well.  LINK.

2008 Draftees and Status (29 of 52 signed)
« Reply #77 on: July 19, 2008, 02:30:37 pm »
Justice has a nice read in his blog today about the Astros signing their 48th round pick, Danny Meszaros.  LINK.  Describes Meszaros as "one of those guys that might be signed if a roster spot is open, or if he had a good summer."  After missing the entire '07 season rehabbing from injury and having a sub-par draft year, the Astros nevertheless chose him in the 48th round at the urging of area scout, J.D. Alleva.  Meszaros was signed Friday after 19.2 innings in the Cape League with a 1.37 ERA and 25 strike outs.  "It's an underdog story: 22 yr old Jr., below average stats in spring of draft year, shoulder surgery, and 5'10", 175 lbs. As I type, he is driving to Troy, NY to meet his new teammates later today in Tri-City.''

With the signing of Meszaros, the Astros now have signed 29 of their 52 draft picks.  All but 5 of the top 20 picks have been signed.

Bonuses paid for the top 10 round picks per PGCrosschecker.com.  LINK

Castro (rd 1) - $2,070,000;  Lyles (rd 1s) - $930,000;   Austin (rd 2) - $715,000;  Steele (rd 4) - $267,000;  Duncan (rd 5) - $185,000;
Shuck (rd 6) - $150,000;     Gaston (rd 7) - $150,000;  Cruz (rd 9) - $150,000;     Holloway (rd 10) - $150,000.

As I wrote in the draft review he had some impressive work, statistically speaking prior to the injury.  His recovery looks fairly complete.

Nada, that I've heard.

If they do sign at this late date, I would expect the deal to be post dated for 2009.  Doing that starts their clock toward 40-man decision time back a year.  There really isn't much time left for anyone to join a club and get any real work in anyway.

This was the last I saw on the 19th:
Quote
The Astros still hope to sign four more players from the upper ranks of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft: Charles Davidson, an outfielder from Milton High in Georgia; Ross Seaton, a righty from Second Baptist; Brad Dydalewicz, a left-hander from Lake Travis High; and Christopher Hicks, a right-hander from Georgia Tech.

"I'd love to see us run the table," general manager Ed Wade said. "I don't know if that's realistic or not, but we've certainly had conversations that would lead us to think that we at least have a chance to do that. If that's the case, then what's already been a successful signing season will be even more successful."
Always ready to go to a game.

Last I saw was from a transcript of JdJO's Live Chat yesterday (so take it for what it is worth):

Q (ic): *** Also, anything new on the draft picks that have not been signed?

A (JdJO): Bobby Heck sent me a text message yesterday saying nothing was new. With that said, however, I have on good authority that Seaton and [Dydalewicz] are close. I will be shocked if those two kids aren't signed soon.

By the way, didn't actually type "Dydalewicz," rather described him as "the kid from the Austin area, whose name is very difficult to spell and I won't look it up so I can answer as many questions as possible"...

Pinwheel is 'reporting' that Dydalewicz signed for 2nd round money ($425,000) [LINK], although it appears to be closer to what third round picks are being signed for (see PG Cross Checker signing bonus information).

Here are the reported signing bonuses for the Astros picks through round 10:  Castro (rd 1) - $2,070,000;  Lyles (rd 1s) - $930,000;
Austin (rd 2) - $715,000;  Steele (rd 4) - $267,000;  Duncan (rd 5) - $185,000;  Shuck (rd 6) - $150,000;  Gaston (rd 7) - $150,000;
Dydalewicz (rd 8) - $425,000; Cruz (rd 9) - $150,000;  Holloway (rd 10) - $150,000.

With the signing of Dydalewicz, the Astros now have signed 30 of their 52 draft picks.  All but 4 of the top 20 picks have been signed.  See Jacksonian's 2008 Draft Recap for updated signing status of all 2008 draftees, as well as commentary on each draftee.

JdJO thinks a Seaton signing is imminent.  As of 8:05 PM (CDST), he blogged that:

"I won't be shocked. Heck, I would expect that any hour now the Astros will announce that Second Baptist ace Ross Seaton has been signed with the Astros."  LINK

Why does JdJO think it's imminent that Sheets signs with Houston? Or is this just wishful thinking. If I'm going to think wishfully I would put Sabathia in an Astros uniform before Sheets although Sheets would be a good signing I suppose. He is often injured.

Why does JdJO think it's imminent that Sheets signs with Houston? Or is this just wishful thinking. If I'm going to think wishfully I would put Sabathia in an Astros uniform before Sheets although Sheets would be a good signing I suppose. He is often injured.

Yeah, but think of all the extra material costs for a Sabathia uniform.

Seaton has signed.

Sweet.  This is the one I was concerned about.

Davidson remains from the first 10 rounds, and if they don't sign him they will get a 3rd round supplemental pick next year.

Does he think he's reporting some sort of well kept secret or breaking news?  Anybody with any sort of knowledge of the situation knew for a fact it was going to take "above slot money" to get the kid signed.  Heck, that's why he went in the third round and not the first or supplemental round!

I guess JdJO is trying to educated someone, but I'm not sure who... other than the great unwashed Uncle Drayton is cheap playah haters!

McTaggart specifically provided that detail when he reported the Dydalewicz signing. So, yes.  The Chronicle reporters seem to be focused on this.

Per McTaggart: They signed third-round supplemental pick Ross Seaton *** to a $700,000 deal on Friday and will give him another $252,000 for college. <a href="http://blogs.chron.com/gamedayastros/2008/08/astros_opening_wallet_for_draf.html>LINK

Comparing the $952,000 total Seaton is reported to be receiving against moneys paid to other 1st - 3rd rounders make it look more like he was paid 1st round supplemental pick money than 3rd round money.  LINK

is jones, an LSU football signee? What are the odds of drafting a jones two years in a row who goes to LSU for football?  Also,  I don't know if he is an Astros "summer follow", but Danbury is playing in the Valley League.

http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/?p=405

"The Astros, who failed to sign three of their top six picks last year, spent $700,000 on supplemental third-rounder Ross Seaton on Aug. 1. A product of Second Baptist High in Houston, Seaton was one of the top high school pitchers in the draft. A commitment to Tulane clouded the righthander’s signability. Seaton also received a potential $250,000 through baseball’s college scholarship plan, which is believed to be a record amount."

Just out of curiosity anyone know want the normal circumstances are regarding college and players that sign? Don't you also only get the money if and which you go to school?

Your tuition-meter needs recalibration. Many private liberal arts schools are now in the $40K/year range. Harvard is $50K+.

And when you figure that the average is probably closer to five years than four for many, you just about get to $250K.

Tulane is ridiculous. I was accepted there earlier this year and (without going into numbers) the scholarship they gave me was substantially larger than any other offer I got. Even so, it was way more expensive than anywhere else.

In short, I look forward to catching a few Express games during my first couple of weeks at Southwestern.

14th round selection Chris Hicks has been added to the Tri-City roster page at milb.com, so it's looks like he has signed. Now if they can get Davidson, they'll have signed every player taken in the first 15 rounds.

I had heard he was close but had not heard he'd signed.  Collegiate closer.  I'll be curious to see how he's used.

I've also heard the Astros have been pushing to get Poytress and are closing in on him.

I've heard Davidson is still pretty far away.

Here is the official release.  Prior to his signing, he was pitching in the cape cod league for the Gateman.

In 8 innings pitched, have up 14 hits, 9 runs, 8 ER, 3 walks and 7 Ks.  ERA of 9.00 and two saves.

47 hours and counting... From the Jim Callis (Baseball America) chat at ESPN today (<a href="http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=21909>LINK (Insider)):

George (NY): Do you expect there will be any surprising no-signs Friday?

SportsNation Jim Callis: If I expect them, they wouldn't be a surprise, would they? In terms of players I don't think will sign from early rounds, Allan Dykstra (Padres) is the biggest threat in the first round and Scott Bittle (Yankees) is the biggest threat in the second round. I don't think the Astros will sign Chase Davidson in the third round, and I don't think the Angels will land Zach Cone in the supplemental third round.

Scott (Albany NY): W/ Davidson is it because Drayton won't go that far over slot or because Davidson wants to go to college?

SportsNation Jim Callis: The Astros have gone over slot for guys this year, so that's not the issue.

Dykstra had a hip injury in high school.  He had surgery to fix it, but the padres discovered he has some sort of degenerative hip condition when their doctors were examining him.  It's also possible that they are exaggerating things as a negotiating tactic.

The thing is, the Astros are in a reasonable position here.  They've signed the players they needed to sign and losing one out of the top 20 isn't a huge deal.  They'll get a 3S pick next year as compensation if he doesn't sign.

ESPN is reporting that 9th overall pick (Nationals) Crow has signed with Forth Worth Cats of the American Association (LINK).

From the story, it appears that the contract will not preclude him from signing with the Nationals if a deal can be reached before the Friday midnight deadline though.

He goes back in the draft ala Luke Hochevar a couple of years back.  Scherzer did this same thing too (sign with indy league team).

Despite an over-slot offer, the Astros were unable to sign 3rd round pick Chase Davidson.  He will attend the University of Georgia next year instead.  McTaggart Blog link.

Quote
"With the support of Ed (Wade), Tal (Smith) and Drayton (McLane), we were very aggressive with our offer today," Astros scouting director Bobby Heck said. "His desire to play college baseball won out, and I don't know of a figure that would have changed that."

If I understand correctly, the Astros will receive a compensatory pick in the 3rd round (supplemental) since they were not able to sign Davidson.  Duman/Jacksonian, correct?

2008 Astros Draftee Status as of Signing Deadline

The Astros signed 32 of their 52 picks from the 2008 draft as of the close of the signing period (Friday, August 15 at midnight).  This includes 11 of their 12 picks from the first 10 rounds, and 19 of their 22 picks from the first 20 rounds.  Only Chase Davidson (round 3), Josh Poytress (round 16) and Shae Robin (round 20) were not signed from the first 20 rounds.

The reported bonuses paid for the top 10 round picks (per PGCrosschecker.com) total $5.892 million (excluding additional payments, such as the reported $250,000 in college moneys negotiated with Seaton, etc.), and are as follows:

Castro (rd 1) - $2,070,000;  Lyles (rd 1s) - $930,000; Austin (rd 2) - $715,000;  Seaton (rd 3) - $700,000;  Steele (rd 4) - $267,000;
Duncan (rd 5) - $185,000;  Shuck (rd 6) - $150,000;  Gaston (rd 7) - $150,000; Dydalewicz (rd 8) - $425,000; Cruz (rd 9) - $150,000;
Holloway (rd 10) - $150,000.

In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

Re: 2008 Astros Draftee Status as of Signing Deadline

Only Chase Davidson (round 3), Josh Poytress (round 16) and Shae Robin (round 20) were not signed from the first 20 rounds.

And, as noted in the draft review, Robin quit baseball a couple of weeks after being drafted so the Astros had no chance of signing him.

Apparently the Astros were close with 34th rounder Jankowski

Quote
Going to Miami was something Jankowski thought he might not do during the two-plus months after the Astros drafted him. Now, he will not be eligible for the draft again until after his junior season.

According to Jankowski, Houston offered a "pretty nice deal." He would have been assigned to the Astros' instructional league before playing for the Greeneville (Tenn.) Astros, a rookie-league affiliate.

"They really made me think about it," said Jankowski, who finished his scholastic career with a WPIAL-record 36 home runs in addition to a plus-600 on-base percentage and back-to-back Class AAAA championships.

A project at catcher at the minor-league level, Jankowski opted for Miami in hopes of improving his defense.
Always ready to go to a game.
