That was solid baserunning by Lance.  Picking up the base behind the run down and moving on the grounder to 3rd.  It was exactly what a baserunner should do in those situations, and so he's showing improvement.

Also a nice job by Pence forcing the delayed second throw. How many times have we seen some veteran hitter who should know better just stopping and taking the first tag because he's pissed at himself for making a wrong break?

The "Blum/Wigginton" box bet for "first back to back" went of at 10,000-1.

I could see both physical & mental reservations playing into Coop's decision.

May not be ready to go over 100 pitches, he can leave the game now and take away an ok start with something to improve on but leaving his team in the game.  No telling how an early road implosion could mess up his head.

And lack of range in LF extends it.  5-4 Padres.

You'd prefer Manny or Barry partolling left instead?

I don't know of too many LFs that jump right out at you as plus defenders.

Geary looks awesome.

Bottom 8: Thatcher still in to turn Berkman around, Mededith (sidearm delivery) warming up in the pen.

Berkman (1-3, double): b, cs, ss, fb, fb, fb, b, gapper into right center for another double by Berkman (nice at bat by Puma, surpassed his double total for the first 2 months of last season already...).  0 out, runner on 2B.
Lee (1-3, HR): [Meredith pitching, held Lee and Tejada hitless last night against him] fb, fb, b, hammered to SS, Greene caught it on the hop and threw to 1B for the out.  1 out, Berkman on 2B.
Tejada: b [PUMA steals 3B, holy crap - ballsy play][infield in now], fb, sf fly to left center, Berkman scores (steal of 3B was HUGE). HOU 5, SD 5.
Blum (2-3, HR):
Wigginton: lined out to RF.

This is exactly the sort of game I expect to see a lot of. The starter gives up more runs than would be ideal but the offense scores, too. The pen gives up a couple of runs to let the other team eke out a lead in a relatively high scoring game. Let's see what our guys do.

A two-out, four run rally against Trevor Freaking Hoffman is pretty damn special, at that! Well done, Astros!

Not something you see every day.
He breezed him, one more time!

Cheito (PH for Perez): b, cs (low strike, haven't seen a lot of those called tonight), ss (changeup), b, fb (1B line), b, b (walk). 2 outs, runner on 1B.
Bourn (0-4): fb, singled into right field, Cheito to 2B. 2 outs, runners on 1B and 2B.
PENCE!!! (1-4, double): ss (72 MPH changeup), b (in the dirt, blocked by Barrett), lined shot off the glove of of Gonzales at 1B, Cheito scores, Bourn to 3B.  2 outs, Pence on 1B, Bourn on 3B.  HOU 6, SD 6.
Berkman (2-4, 2 doubles): b, b, cs, b, 3 HOME RUN to dead center!!!  HOU 9, SD 6.

Clutch PH walk by Cheito down 1-2 on the count, sweet single by Bourn, shot by PENCE! to tie it, bomb by Berkman to go ahead by 3.  NOW THAT'S WHAT I LIKE TO SEE!!!

Put er in the bank..... I also like seeing Valverde's fist pump at the end and Berkman high fiving him...guess all that extra emotion and celebration isn't so offensive after an 0-2 start...

Valverde showed the difference between pitching the 8th and pitching in the 9th.  It wasnt the result, it was the intensity.

And the wee fact that he got ahead of hitters in the 9th.

He did look pissed in the dugout between innings.

Yay!  I love waking up to happy headlines.  Couldn't make it past the 6th last night.

1-2 sounds SO much better than 0-3.
