Wallace leaves

The Seattle Mariners signed former major league pitching coach and executive Dave Wallace on Tuesday to be a special assistant to the general manager.

He will assist general manager Bill Bavasi and be a roving instructor of Seattle's minor league pitchers during the 2008 season. During spring training, Wallace will work with new pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre, whom the Mariners hired on Monday.

Astros news, Sept. 30
Pitching coach Dave Wallace will also not return to the coaching staff in '08, but that decision was his, not the team's. Wallace, only a year and a half removed from a life-threatening hip condition that stemmed from salmonella poisoning, prefers to take on a role that allows for him to be at home more. Wallace has two grandchildren and an adopted daughter who is in the second grade, and he's looking for a job that will give him more flexibility of schedule.

The Astros hope to keep Wallace on staff in another capacity, perhaps in an advisory role.

"They're going to put something together," Wallace said. "They were very complimentary. I've done a lot in the front office. I'll probably put the uniform on and do stuff here and there, but I need to get home for a week or 10 days every month."

"life-threatening hip condition that stemmed from salmonella poisoning"???

Now there's a phrase I never thought I'd read.  I don't know the first thing about salmonella poisoning, but how exactly can it lead to a hip condition of any kind, let alone a life-threatening hip condition?
"Ground ball right side, they're not gonna be able to turn two OR ARE THEY, THROW, IS IN TIME!!! WHAT AN UNBELIEVABLE TURN BY BRUNTLETT AND EVERETT, AND THEY CUT DOWN MABRY TO END THE GAME, AND THE ASTROS LEAD THIS NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES THREE GAMES TO ONE!!!!!"

The salmonella poisoning went through Wallace's blood stream and settled in the left hip he had replaced years earlier. ...

Wallace spent three days in intensive care and five more days at the South Carolina hospital before taking a med-flight back to Mass General where he spent another few weeks.

Two days after he was discharged from Mass General, the drain in his left hip erupted with infectious blood and pus, and he returned to the hospital.

His left hip had to be removed so the area could be saturated with antibiotics. He spent about three months without a hip, fighting the infection with antibiotics.

Did the Astros just not want the guy?

(Mariners' GM) Bavasi called the job a pitching instructor "with fangs," and Wallace said he couldn't wait. "I love young pitchers; I want to help them," he said. "I have first-hand front office experience, so I can help Bill with whatever he needs." ...

I think he quit the Astros, not the other way around.

He can't go to the AL, because if a game lasts longer than four hours he must seek emergency treatment.

I lost a lymph node in a similar situation when I was a kid.  I'm actually quite lucky I didn't lose my leg.

Trust me, it's no fun being stuck in the hospital with IV tubes hanging from your area.

My new favorite, just added by KC to their coaching staff this week, is Rusty Kuntz.

Also noted in the article, old freind Billy Doran is now job hunting.

WTF, the Royals have Kuntz coaching first. Everybody knows you get Kuntz at third base.

I remember stumbling across a Rusty Kuntz baseball card when I was in the sixth grade. It was a life altering moment when I proudly displayed it to my mom, unintentionally mispronouncing his name.

Soap, water, and a little concern for personal hygiene can help anyone with Rusty Kuntz.

Leo Mazzone's looking for a job...
I'd be curious to see what he can do without Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz at his disposal for a second time...

In my view, Leo Mazzone is the most sound pitching coach out there. He's a firm believer in throwing often and pays little attention to pitch counts. I think that he would have eventually been successful in Baltimore, had the O's mismanagement given Mazzone's childhood friend Sam Perlozzo more than two seasons to right the ship. Angelos is such an idiot.

Has anyone seen any articles on where he might go, or what he's looking for? I'd imagine somewhere with more young pitching talent in the org than Houston, but you never know... By the way, I'd say there's more than enough evidence that Mazzone's successes went waaaaayyy beyond Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz.
