BP Positional rankings: Catchers
« on: July 18, 2007, 01:03:41 pm »
1.  Jeff Clement, SEA
2.  Bryan Anderson, STL
3.  JR Towles

Indicates Towles as the likely 2008 starter.  Strange prediction, given one good month at AA, but not so strange given their well-documented disdain for Ausmus.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Make that 2009 and it *might* be a possibility, but it's hard to see JR opeining the season next year in the bigs.

And on a semi-related note ... is there any news on Gimenez' recovery progress?  Does he expect to be in the mix next spring??

IMHO, Towles is the best catching prospect to rise through the organization since John Buck.  That said, projecting him as the starter in '08 is frighteningly premature.

The "premature" analogy works well, though, since we're talking about BP, which leaves knowledgeable baseball readers as unsatisified as a Quick Draw McGraw in the bedroom.

If he continues to improve his attitude, and if he continues to improve his defense, and if he continues to hit well I'd expect Towles to be the often used backup in 09 (learning the mlb), taking over in 10.  08 would be AAA.

Sounds right to me ... including all the "if"s

Re: Gimenez.  No news is good news.
I suppose so.  My guess is that we see Gimenez & Towles splitting the duties in RR next year.  Q will either make it to the 'stros or not, but I don't see him clogging the system at AAA.  I expect Santangelo to repeat AA and (hopefully) learn to hit.  I don't know whether there is room for Mackor or not, but I expect some combination of Mackor, Lopez, a minor league journeyman ir maybe even Justin Tellam to be in the mix.  [just kidding] Who knows, maybe they'll even consider activating Tank Fatheree.
