With Manfred talking openly about expansion for the MLB or relocation of teams (Oakland), would you support another league switch for the Astros?

I can't believe we don't have a thread yet...

Shiner 100 is out. I got it at Central Market in Houston. I've had two and I got to say, meh. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad; It's just not great. I don't think I will buy another 6 pack.

I've been drinking Agave wheat, Fireman's #4 and Hop Wallop. All are really good.

Talk Zone / Now is your chance to Rickroll the Mets all year long...
« on: April 04, 2008, 02:43:33 pm »
http://digg.com/baseball/Digg_users_unite_Let_s_Rickroll_the_NY_Mets_all_year

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and to be honest, just plain funny. The Mets have opened themselves to getting "rickrolled" all year long.

For those of you who do not know what getting "rickrolled" is; ts another childish internet prank where you send a link to a friend saying something along the lines of "hey check out my vacation pictures!!1!" or "Astros trade Roy Oswalt to Red Sox for..." then, instead of having the expected link, you send them a link to the music video of Rick Astleys' "Never going to let you down". I know, its stupid but nonetheless harmless and kind of funny. This whole rickrolled thing got really big on the internet after google and youtube replace all of their links for a short period of time with the music video for an April Fool's prank. But I digress...

Now, The Mets have enacted a poll on their website for fans to choose which song to play during the 8th inning of a game at Shea for the ENTIRE SEASON. That's right. You can vote to force the Mets and all of their fans to listen to "Never going to let you down" during EVERY 8th inning at Shea. If you ever wanted to mess with the Mets and their fans, now is your best shot yet.

I encourage you to listen to the song and watch the video to remind yourself how awful the song is and how funny it will be to have it on durring every 8th inning in Shea.

Their wine list is pretty impressive, a lot of high end producers.  Looks like they're going with a 100% markup on the bottles, though, which (unfortunately) is pretty standard in the restaurant business these days.  Better to buy one of those bottles retail and forget about it in a wine cellar for a few years.

Can't resist posting some economics....

Wasn’t Junction Jack a back to back winner of the mascot Homerun Derby or an MVP or something?

With all of the Biggio and Bagwell retirements and parades and ceremonies and other nostalgic bullshit... I eagerly anticipate next season when they officially retire Orbit's jersey. Perhaps I can get to the stadium early to ensure that I be one of the lucky 10,000 fans to receive the first of the first set of three Orbit bobble heads.

Fireman's #4 is my current favorite beer. Goes perfect with the hot Texas summer. Crown and Anchor, Dog and Duck and Homeslice pizza all have trouble keeping it in stock. One of the employees at Homeslice told me that after SXSW the beer blew up and they are now having trouble keeping up with the demand, which is bitter sweet for me since I love seeing Austin and other Texas beers getting props yet I cant stand being relegated to "canned beer". Anyways, Real Ale and Live Oak are both pretty great microbreweries and I couldnt be more happy that they are located in my town. With the exception of Colorado microbrews, I doubt many other states can hold their own with Texas.

Shiner 98 is really good as well, I went out and got some a few weeks back and have been steadily drinking it since. Hopefully it stays around for awhile.

Also, for those IPA fans; Victory Hop Wallop, 471 Small Batch, and Lagunitas Maximus are a cut above the rest. Try them. Now.

This is a research paper done by the University of Chicago over media bias in daily newspapers. The findings are that news papers slant their news to the preference of the average consumer in their target market. Pretty good business practice, if you ask me.

Even though it doesn?t deal with sports specifically, it?s very interesting and makes sense. I think it does have some implications for sports writing and some of you have touched up on some critical issues, such as newspapers competing with the electronic media. Anyways, I hope some of you can get something out of it.

George-Michael was hilarious and told some very funny stories about a creepy Scott Baio giving relationship advice to him. I wish I could translate the story to you guys, but it was simply something that has to be acted out by George-Michael.

Side note, one of the best Brit-coms I?ve seen this year, The Thick of It, has been picked up by the producers of Arrested Development to do an American translation. If The Office is any indication, it should be one of the best comedies on television. Also, tonight's Office is written by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the shows British creators. Should be excellent.

Players (and years played) who accumulated 1500 runs, 2300 hits, 400 homers, 1500 RBI, 1400 walks and 200 stolen bases in their careers:

Hank Aaron (23 years)
Barry Bonds (20 years and counting)
Willie Mays (22 years)
Frank Robinson (21 years)
Jeff Bagwell (15 years)
That is all.

Carve these names on a bat, and use it to beat anyone who claims that Bagwell is even marginal for the Hall.

With all due respect to Bagwell, one of these things is not like the other:
Player       R     H   HR   RBI    BB   SB
------------------------------------------
Aaron     2174  3771  755  2297  1402  240
Bonds     2152  2841  734  1930  2426  509
Mays      2062  3283  660  1903  1464  338
Robinson  1829  2943  586  1812  1420  204
Bagwell   1517  2314  449  1529  1401  202

I'd like to see the marginal rate of these stats. I'm sure it will look alot better for Bags if we arrange the data in that way. However, do you use total games, total at bats,or even total times on base? I dont know, just thinking.

What I think is amazing is that most people can't tell you what they're eating for lunch tomorrow, but they think they can tell you which direction stocks will move over time.

See 'em both at the Alamo Drafthouse this week: the Best place to go to watch such movies.

The Drafthouse is by large and far the best place to see a movie. I went to the downtown (Austin) drafthouse and caught a shot by shot remake of Raiders of the Lost Ark by 12 year olds. It took them 10 years to finish and you could see the actors going through the different stages of puberty. Hilarious. They actually did a really good job, too.

I also love catching the rolling road shows they do around Austin and around the country. They did a sneak preview for Jack Black's Nacho Libre. They flew in luca libre wrestlers from Mexico City to wrestle before (two of which were MIDGETS) and had nachos and tacos to eat. Besides the fact that the movie was below average, it was the most fun movie experience of my life. Tomorrow, they are doing a free screening of the original Clerks in Red Bank, NJ where the film was shot followed by a Q&A with Kevin Smith; very cool shit.

Anyways, I?ll stop geeking out on you guys, but the drafthouse is one of the reasons I don?t ever want to leave Austin.

With the talk about what the Astros will look like next year, I haven?t seen anyone's opinion on Garner. I would assume that he would be a lock for the 2007 option on his contract but considering the way this season has gone, I don?t think he is a sure thing anymore. I personally can?t imagine the Astros not picking up his option, but we still have a lot of baseball to play and if we make a blockbuster trade and end up playing worse or whatever....

So, what I?m curious to know is what the popes and everyone else on this fine board thing of him as a manager. Does anyone thing he could be gone next season? Any other managers out there you would like to see take control of the team? Anything about Garner?s ?style? that pisses you off?

Perfect, Ive wasted hours of my life defining and defending something no one will agree with me on. I love this forum.

I guess everyone thinks choking is much  more of a  rare occurrence than I make it out to be?

Does anyone think that we didn't choke when we had runners in scoring position and didn't knock any in last night?

I would argue our batters did choke. Its the World Series, I consider ever chance to get an RBI a clutch situation, especially if they are RBI batters up to bat (I understand you may not). If it were the regular season, ehh, I don't think I would classify it as a clutch situation.

Woah, slow down there. Choking is a word that shouldn't of been used there, its too harsh, I know that. I was drunk and biter after getting a call from my family in the south side of  Chicago rubbing in their victory and I got ahead of myself.

However, since we are on the subject and I'm being criticized, allow me to retort.

Choking, to me, is not doing your job in a clutch situation. With that definition, in my eyes, choking happens all the time. That definition also depends alot on expectations. If you expect a player to get a clutch hit and he doesn't it hurts more than say, a player with lower expectations not getting a clutch hit.

I expect Moberg to do alot more than he has been doing with the bat. A .233 post season average is  not choking, but its nothing to jump to his defense about (not that any of you guys were).  I consider Mobergs job at the plate is, primarily, to drive in runs when possible (I expect him to be the #2 man in this department next to Berkman). During the season, Morgan drove in 15.44% of the teams RBIs. During the postseason he has actually driven in 19.47% of the teams RBIs. However, that number is inflated because of the 5 RBI CLUTCH performance in game one of the NLDS. In the NLDS he hit 29.17% of the teams RBIs. Since then he has hit only 9.52% of the teams RBIs, 10.53% in the NLCS.*

Now, can you kind of see what I was expecting and how it doesn't match up? After starting out with 29.17% of the  team RBIs his numbers continued to drop to the current 9.52% state. This isn't choking, but I think its close.

* i know these stats don't tell the whole story, but i do believe it gives you an idea of where we are headed....

« on: October 11, 2005, 02:02:13 pm »
I would love to see this stat and how it compares with other years. I, however, dont have the slightest clue on how to obtain this.

Can anyone help?

I'm terribly nervous, but I do have a strong since of confidence in the good guys; something that was lacking with last year's team headed into game one.

Unlucky for me, I'll be at work for two thirds of game one.

Someone please tell me how Lane could be out at 2nd, when Perez had neither the ball, a foot on the bag, nor a tag on the runner.

Fucking bullshit.

That was shit. Lane took out his leg off the bag when sliding in. It should of been a pretty obvious call. I, however, didn't see where blue was placed.

I agree. I really liked that stat that the cubs have never scored a run on Wheeler.

Damn it Berg! When he doesn't hit, our line up suffers badly.

Berkman's hit by pitch looked like it hurt.

Aside from Bucknor, NUT UP YOU SACKLESS BUNCH OF MONKEYTURDS.  IT'S TIME TO GET SOME FUCKING RUNS.

Somebody beat me to it, but I would definitely vote for Guiness in a can ... their patented plastic whateveritis in the can makes it taste almost as good as on tap, while the bottled version tastes dead.

Stop me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Guinness come with the widget in the bottle too? I could of sworn it was in there the last time I treated myself...

Matt Albers-

What's the scoop on him? Everything i read says that he has attitude problems but nothing more. Last year he wasnt ranked in the top 10 prospects now he is number 6! He is one of the (i guess) select few at the pitching camp with Nolan Ryan. Where will he start next year in the farm system? Why am i only finding that he has attitude problems when he is ranked as our 6th best prospect and 3rd best pitching prospect?
