I think either would be entertaining.

They didn't kill nobody. They didn't rape nobody. I don't see what the big deal is.

This is at least as bad as when the Astros threw the 1919 Series.

When the Red Sox got caught red-handed doing illegal things, Rosenthal brushed it off with a "yeah, it happens...slap 'em on the wrist and move on."  He thinks the Astros should be disbanded, every citizen of Houston fined $1 billion and Hinch given a lengthy prison sentence.  Fuck him.

I don't have $1 billion.

The bullpen catcher is also going to be busy doing other things for much of the game.

What's more important than stealing signs?

The latest from  Score:

some details of how the scheme operated.

Trevor Plouffe, a nine-year veteran who last played in 2018, explained that the Astros used a live feed to capture the opposing catcher's signals to the pitcher, then used technology to relay that information to the bullpen catcher, who would then indicate whether the pitch was a fastball or offspeed by putting his hands up on the fence or keeping them down. Plouffe's information came courtesy of big-league pitcher Carson Smith as well as an unnamed source.

That seems unnecessarily complicated, and something that everyone in the bullpen would have known.

Frito Pie doesn't guarantee a win, it's simply preparation and dedication.  It's like hitting a 2-0 line drive 110 mph with the bases loaded...it usually plates two runs, but baseball is a cruel mistress sometimes and the BBGs are fickle.  You do what you can do, not matter what.

Exactly right.

Yuli's glove, among others, have been on display in this WS.

Talk Zone / Re: Cole and Game 5
« on: October 28, 2019, 12:06:02 pm »
There are several contracts expiring this year with Harris, McHugh, Miley, Rondon, and Smith.  That is $27 million in salary right there. I would think that Houston could fill a few of those roles internally with the exception of Harris and Smith, who I would hope that they try to re-sign.  I think they could make the money work.  Maybe they try to deal Greinke or Reddick in the offseason to free up some payroll if they re-sign Cole?  Obviously they would probably have to eat some of Greinke's money if they deal him. I guess it all will boil down to if Cole really wants to stay.  He won't find a better situation as far as winning and doing so long term in the offseason.  I think the two big names that will hit free agency soon are Springer and Correa.  At this point, I think Springer is the priority over Correa.  Once Correa hits free agency you have Grenike off of the books if they don't deal him.  To me, I think they can make it work with Cole while not putting the team's future in jeapordy if he wants to stay.

Of all the players on the current team, Correa's value seems the hardest to pin down.  When he plays he's great, but he sure seems injury prone.

59
Talk Zone / Re: Cole and Game 5
« on: October 28, 2019, 10:05:01 am »
I don't mind the storyline. It's what reporters do and maybe it was his last game. It'll play out with lots of noise and hoopla and odds are what odds are, and I'd just as soon ease into that now than discover it when it happens. I would really hate for him to end up a Yankee though.

Probably because of the storyline I was thinking last night what a special defensive team this is for a pitcher, and that if I were a pitcher looking at leaving the Astros, that's what might hold me. It would be easier to pitch in front of this team than any place else in baseball. Yeah, Cole is great, but at least a bit of that greatness is what's behind him.

You won't find metered parking. There will be lots, but they will probably be pricey.  Palm Center is a long way away, but I'd think that if you park on the theater district side of downtown you can still walk or take the cross town metro.  I don't ever park there but somewhere between the medical center and downtown would also work for Metro.

I want to know if the SI reporter went to Astros top brass about it before posting the report.  We train our staff to report abuse of any kind right away before doing anything else.  Don't let a perpetrator have any more time to continue bad behavior than can be helped.

The way I parse it SI showed the story to the Astros for comment before publication. That's pretty standard practice in political matters, and would be perfectly appropriate. I would assume that the reporter went to their counterpart in the Astros organization, but no organization would put out a press release like the Astros' without it being vetted up the line. If that didn't happen, man, that's almost even worse.

Like someone said, it doesn't really affect my enjoyment of the games, but among the broader public it really kills a lot of the good will that the organization has built. And it was just stupid.

It looks like (1) the Astros got the facts wrong in the press release; (2) Traubman was being an ass at work and embarrassed the organization; and (3) the Stros could have diffused the situation with a simple you-misunderstood-the-motives-but-we-are-so-sorry-our-behavior-was-inexcusable, which was really the only thing appropriate. If Traubman and the Astros intended to defend Osuna they've accomplished exactly the opposite. Osuna and the Astros will never be able to walk away from the domestic violence storyline now.

We went to Yankee stadium this season. During a rain delay we were standing up under cover, and I was wearing an orange shirt. Guy walks by and shoulder bashes me hard enough that I went reeling.

We also sat by some very nice fans, but that place is really awful.

I’m glad Buck shut up and let the celebration play out. It makes re-watching the clip that much more enjoyable.

He couldn't talk. He was weeping.

Years ago I posted something on here about the albums I gave my daughter to take to college.  I can't remember what they were, but almost certainly  John Coltrane's My Favorite Things because that was the first jazz albums I loved, Layla, and Revolver. Probably Kind of Blue and London Calling.  Maybe the second Springsteen album, or maybe Blue by Joni Mitchell. Probably not the Bach Cello Suites which was a big omission.  Maybe some French solo piano music or some Gershwin.

I doubt if she ever listened to any of them. I doubt if the list would be the same today.

Sources: Yankees dugout erupts over Astros' alleged sign stealing

Yankees players and coaches became angry with the Astros during Game 1 of the ALCS when they noticed a whistling sound in the Astros' dugout -- which they believed was an over-the-line example of sign stealing, and a violation of the game's unwritten rules.

According to three sources, a Yankees coach noticed a whistling sound in the opposing dugout on certain pitches on Saturday night in Houston. The Yankees started yelling across the field, and people in the dugouts argued back and forth.

You'd think if they were stealing signs in Game 1 it would have done them more good.

If tonight’s game gets postponed until tomorrow, I’d flip Verlander and Urquidy in your order.  Verlander won’t be fazed by pitching in Yankee Stadium in October, and he’s on normal rest Friday.

In the playoffs not going with Verlander Friday is too much of a headgame.  You play to win the game in front of you. That means Verlander as soon as he's on full rest. Greinke tomorrow, Verlander Friday.

It looks like I may have a couple of tickets for game 6, if necessary. Haven’t been to Houston in about 30 years. If we get to go and want to stay in the area of MMP.....
A. Where to go for BBQ? Jackson St BBQ?
B. Where to go for a good steak, without parting with my first born to pay for it?
C. Best Mexican/Tex-Mex in that area would be?

Thanks for your help!!!

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Jackson St. is close to the stadium, and it's not bad. It should be rowdy pre-game, which would be fun.  There's better Texas BBQ nearby, at the Pit Room on Richmond and Pinkerton's on Airline. I once had a Frito pie at the Pit Room, but it was unhealthily large.  I suspect Truth on Washington is also very good, but I haven't been.

There are three steak places near the stadium, Morton's, Vic & Anthony's, and Pappas.  All will be absurdly expensive. As an alternative, there's a Vietnamese place nearby that's very good, Hyunh. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/entertainment/top-100-restaurants/article/Top-100-Houston-restaurant-Huynh-Restaurant-13253840.php#. I always get the tofu in crispy noodles, but there's a good sirloin dish as well.  I think it's byob.

Ninfa's on Navigation. Make a reservation. They run a bus to MMPUS.

There's also a good grocery downtown now, with good pastries. Phoenicia. You can get beer or wine there on the way to Huynh.

I watched a lot of Bergman back in the day, mostly because I had a crush on Liv Ullmann. I never thought of Bergman having much swing.

I'm sure it really bugs you that Webster says:

im·pact

noun: impact; plural noun: impacts

/ˈimˌpakt/

1. the action of one object coming forcibly into contact with another.
"there was the sound of a third impact"

synonyms: collision, crash, smash, clash, bump, bang, knock, jolt, thump, whack, thwack, slam, smack; contact
"car parts were spread by the impact over a wide region"

2. the effect or influence of one person, thing, or action, on another.
"our regional measures have had a significant impact on unemployment"

synonyms: effect, influence, impression, footprint; More

That's new-fangled stuff, like people wearing caps in restaurants.

291
Talk Zone / Re: Preseason Panic
« on: February 28, 2019, 02:07:19 pm »
That's cool, but describing something as "impactful" still makes sense even with that definition, especially considering Newtonian ideas of bodies acted upon.

I found the new paint job impactful, as it quite changed the course of my thinking on the house in general, like.

That's just poetry.

292
Talk Zone / Re: Preseason Panic
« on: February 28, 2019, 02:05:53 pm »
The use of the word "impact" instead of "effect" drives the engineer in me crazy. An impact is the collision of two or more bodies in space, like a crash.

"The new paint had quite a crash on the house's appearance." is just as stupid as "the new paint had quite an impact on the house's appearance".

It is such a lazy and bureaucratic bit of usage, and universal. It drives the English major in me nuts.

My Jr year of High School several friends and I started camping out on Lake Sam Rayburn on weekends.  By camping I mean sleeping in the bed of a pickup and eating what we caught.  Wolf brand chili (w beans!) was our backup option to starving sometimes.  For a hungry teenager that stuff was awesome!!!

For some reason I always loved the Wolf Brand Chili ads.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0L1GG780-Dw

Is venison chili not chili?

It seems to me that these questions, like all matters of theology and religion, are ultimately unanswerable. Each of you needs to face the baseball gods and satisfy yourself that you're doing what's needed, understanding all the while that these gods are fickle, cruel, impetuous, and prone to take offense at the slightest bobble. If you can honestly answer that yes, vegetarian chili is sufficient, go for it. If beans are in your chili, this isn't a test of Texanhood and shouldn't be confused with it, even if the practice is barbaric. If for some weird reason you don't like Fritos, ok then.

Just don't blow it.

Me, I'm going to Avalon Diner today for lunch.

What's unclear to me is whether you now need to eat frito pie every day, or if we need to find a new frito pie (semi-)virgin every day.

You don’t need to eat Frito pie every day, at least before the playoffs. You need to eat Frito pies at critical junctures. You don’t need to eat Frito pies from different places, or from the same place.  All Frito pies are cosmically linked.

I think I’ll go to Avalon Grill for lunch.

I'm on the local library board, and the Astros sponsor bookmobiles to neighborhoods. At the board meeting they reported that White had shown up with a bookmobile, read the kids a story, talked to every kid who showed up, and stayed way over time.  Sounds like an authentically good guy.

Next thing I know I’m downing a PINT of Thai chicken peanut satay ice cream. I thought I had experienced the same sensation that the first person felt when they tried chocolate ice cream for the first time. I was so convinced of its greatness that I bought another pint to take home. Heck... I even made it back before it melted.

Next day I was so excited to revisit the next great ice cream flavor.... holy shit it was so disgusting! Like inexplicably bad.

When I lived in Colorado, we had a group that bought season tickets to the Rockies (obviously they have not won a World Series) and we each bought a share which consisted of 8 games.   We had to pay early so the tickets could be bought and then had a 'game draft' where all the home games were fairly divided up.

Something to think about...

I'm in a group as well. We're supposed to have 9 games apiece, but lost some members during the dark years.

I used to say they'd have to let some guys walk, and I'd be fine with that. But with that kind of increase, yeah, they should go get a bat. For that kind of money, they should be able to build a DeLorean time machine and go get Stan Musial.

Mine went from $90 per seat to $130 per seat.  I may have wanted them to get a bat, but I didn’t want to pay for it all by myself.  I suspect that kind of jump drives off corporate clients.

I've said this before, but I don't think that Giles has the talent to pitch consistently. Maybe that's just a different way of saying that when his slider is working he's fine, and when it's not he's not. Whether it works fine or not is outside his control. I think if he could, he would. He's done well closing, but he won't continue to do well.

As for his tantrums, they are a sideshow.

Bregman swung the bat at the ball. An angel from heaven came down with a heavenly choir sing “Hosanna! Alleluia!” The catcher Lucroy crossed himself but noticed that the ball through divine providence was dribbling down the first base line  He reached for the ball but a raven landed on it. “Nevermore!” quoth the raven. Lucroy, startled, nonetheless picked up the ball to tag out Bregman, but the brilliant light emitted by Bregman startled him and Lucroy bobbled the ball.  Bregman, hoisted by the heavenly chorus, was carried down the line toward first. Lucroy tried to make the play to first but the Bregman force field diverted the ball towards the Romulun cruiser. Safe. Astros win.

You really should have seen it.

This strikes me as perfectly plausible.

I guess you could also have asked an usher where the guy in the suspenders and bow tie is. Of course, they might say, The clowns that are blowing dog balloons are over there and you would have to explain, No, the guy is wearing boat shoes. Oh! she'd say, He's in 124.

Just shouting does seem more efficient, really, now that I think about it.

You know, my mother for years suffered a disconcertingly relentless cough. It was loud, persistent and unbelievably annoying, even for someone as patient and forgiving as I am. (She lives with my brother who is basically a crazy version of me, so you can imagine that particular domestic scene...) The small upside to the cough was it acted as an outSTANding geolocation device. If we were to meet in a Target, maybe I'd first ducked into a Hobby Lobby, all I'd need to do is walk in and get past the shopping carts and the weird, random shit they have stacked up, kind of in between that and the watches, and just stand there for a second and listen. It never failed. I could walk straight to her.

Tye’s Exagerrating, and anyway I was the one who had to yell. I looked up an saw him on the same row, next section. We were the only people on the row.

ETA: And neither of us coughed that I noticed. I might have snored some.

NFL: 50
NBA: 42

Other sports:
PGA: 64
NASCAR: 58
CFB: 52
CBKB: 52
NHL: 49
MLS: 40

Of course that doesn't necessarily mean that MLB has fewer 42 year-old fans than the NBA.

So according to Trump, his lawyer just woke up one day and decided to give $130,000 of his own money to a porn star for no reason, no expectation of being paid back, and no expectation of anything in return. AND...included Trump in a non-disclosure agreement without Trimp’s knowledge. Just for the hell of it. That’s the story he’s going with. And the GOP is eating it up.

Question for the lawyers (please don’t send me a bill for this):  can an attorney negotiate on behalf of a client without the client’s knowledge or consent?  Seems that’s an ethical violation, if not a legal one.

Probably depends on what the instructions from the client to the lawyer are.  If a client at some point gave the lawyer some kind of general instruction like "handle all the stuff that comes up for me relating to {xxx}, I don't want to hear about it," where {xxx} included agreements with porn stars, then I'd guess the lawyer could handle all that stuff.

That is exactly how I read it then: a 5 day overlap of suspension and DL.

Well at least Jim and I agree that Todd didn’t actually say what he said.

456
Talk Zone / Re: Yuli?
« on: April 05, 2018, 03:23:23 pm »
Todd initially said:

Why can't they just put him on the DL after the five games are over?

To which Jim responded:

Dishonest. He must serve the suspension when he is able to play.

That's pretty much the "controversy" to the extent there is one.  Some people think that serving a suspension when you're unable to play anyway violates the spirit of the suspension (which compounds existing complaints that the suspension should have occurred during the World Series anyway).  Manfred, clearly, doesn't agree with those complaints.

Jake Kaplan in the Athletic noted that by having Gurriel go on the DL after the suspension actually costs the Astros an extra game of Yuli's services.  I haven't read the article so I'm not sure if that's because how the schedule lines up or if it takes into account the added benefit of being able to play in rehab games.

Maybe Jim read it like I did, that Todd was asking why they couldn't overlap.  I guess theoretically Yuli might spend more time on the DL than he would otherwise have to if the DL had to come first, but I'm not at all troubled by what happened.

457
Talk Zone / Re: Yuli?
« on: April 05, 2018, 02:32:48 pm »
The difference theoretically is that he isn't missing any games in which is physically able to play, and thus he and the Astros aren't actually being "penalized" (aside from the obvious monetary penalty to Yuli). Also, if he took his suspension after his DL stint ended he would not be able to play in minor league rehab games while he was on the disqualified list.

Of course Manfred and the league office have no problem at all with how the Astros handled the suspension.

I'm still not getting the problem here.  What it sounded like Todd suggested originally was that Yuli should take his suspension concurrent with his stint on the DL. He didn't do that.  He took his suspension, then went on the DL.  He could have done it the other way, or he could have taken his suspension in July I suppose. In any case they don't appear to me to overlap. But if Todd needs a victory dance I'll sit back and watch the shimmy.

First gratuitously shitty comment of the season. Congrats.

Should have saved it for Giles.

I was advised to get on facebook to follow political stuff, and 10 minutes later was friends with 40 people I grew up with.  I’ve made friends of acquaintences who I wouldn’t have known nearly as well. I’ve seen lots of pictures of trout flies tied by guys I don’t know who tie lots of trout flies. Many of them are incredibly beautiful, and make me happy. No complaints.

Game time is 2:35 pm CDT.

By popular demand, and OWA Executive Order 2018-001, we will meet at Lucky's Pub Downtown.

I will be there around 1:00, I think, but whenever works.  If you have any lucky apparel...shirt, hat, earrings, rainbow underwear, what have you, please wear it.  If you have stirrups, even better.

I’ll be late, but plan to be there.

You guys operate under the old paradigm, his attorneys pay his bills, not the other way around.

Whoever said lawyers were cold-hearted and only looking out for their own best interest? Clearly there really is altruism out there.

Don't worry, a crack, white shoe firm will swoop in and seize such a prestigious opportunity.

Apparently he’s had trouble getting crack, white shoe firms to take the bait. There are all sorts of reasons good firms wouldn’t want the President as their client, starting with he’s not known for paying his contractors.

Me too. But I made Bob Uecker look like Barry Bonds facing little league pitchers.

Me too.

We got an extra hard swift kick in the ass for swinging at a first pitch breaking ball. It was always “anticipate the fastball, adjust to the curve.”   Some guys are better breaking ball hitters than others, but nobody is good at it.

I always hit breaking balls at least as well as I hit fastballs.

The "McWho?" questions on McHugh's first game ring in my ear each time I see his name in the lineup.  He represents so very, very much about what is good with the current Astros; from the way he was pulled from obscurity to the way he was shaped to be the pitcher he is to where he sits in the depth chart right now.

He really did show up out of nowhere.

Best solution for replacing Gurriel looks like Gonzalez at first, Marisnick in left.

Then who replaces Marisnick? That would make a heck of a defensive outfield.
