So nice having Bregman at third.

Amen to that.

Healy out 5-3 on a nice backhand grab by Abreg
Maybin gets the tower buzzed 1-0, lines out F9

That may be the best catch I've ever seen. The way that was bending away from him I was sure it was falling in. The way he turned that glove just that little bit at the end was fantastic.

Yep.  That tailing action was pronounced.

I’m late to the party on this likely but I wanted to wait and see. What he’s done this year combined with the pressure of that AB and that bullshit strike two call makes me think he’s legit. I doubt he sees AAA again. What an addition.

A lot of umpires miss balls and strikes.

It takes a special one to miss balls/strikes/foul balls and grant time as the pitchers foot is in the air.

Yeah, Bregman in particular had a rough night. He’s been carrying this team for a while though so not much you can say. Honestly, he was probably due to cool off a little. We need Yuli to step up and we especially need Correa to come back tomorrow night and play with his hair on fire.

I'll just settle for Correa coming back.

If he's healthy the production will follow.

Very underwhelming.

JV was in the dugout jawing. HPU was standing 10 feet up the 3B line and tossed him.

Later that season, at a game in Pittsburgh on August 11, Verlander’s coach pulled him after the first inning and told him to get an MRI.

His *coach* pulled him from a game?  That's nails on chalkboard.

They should have Cheo on more.  Always like hearing from the stars of my youth.

I'm not the type who can recall batting styles or windups, but envisioning him slapping and driving line drives all over the place is easy to recall.

Bat held straight up over left shoulder,  high front leg kick,  hair barely contained by batting helmet.

That was Black's first career HR allowed to a righty.

The pitch was the 4th fastest pitch to yield a homer this season.

Watch the replay again with sound.   The ambient noise dies down just in time to hear the contact.  Black's reaction was immediate.   Camera cuts to White,  then comes back to Black just in time to see his F bomb.

Priceless.

Our radio guys thought he was out, as did the SF broadcast team (on the At Bat video).  Seeing the replay,  I think he was out but understand why the didn't overturn it; both broadcasts agreed the definitive angle was missing.

It worked out great, but not because of anything that Hinch did.  Fisher struck out, Gattis grounded out, and Stassi popped up.

NL games with a short bench.

You can't always get what you want.
You can't always get what you want.
You can't always get what you want.
But if you try sometimes you might find
You get a 3 run homer in the 9th after the 2 best hitters in your lineup have great ABs and draw walks

I don't know his spray chart and how unusual that ball to third was or wasn't,  but in real time I was elated to see the soft contact then deflated/surprised to see that third base was unoccupied given the pitching strategy. .

Crawford takes outside 1-0, then a strike on the corner 1-1, another 1-2, takes outside 2-2, fouls another outside pitch 2-2, and another 2-2, grounds one thru the shift into left
Slater goes 1-1, 2-1 on a 59 footer,  fouls 2-2, looks at an offspeed pitch for strike 3

Has anyone in here actually been to AT & T Park? It looks like the water level from the bay just over the fence in right is WAY higher than field level. Is it? Never noticed this before but a pregame angle, and one just a second ago, certainly gave it that appearance.

That was three (?) years ago when he could still move, and it didn't involve making the Rangers better. I think the situation is pretty different now.

The rangers aren't looking to seriously improve at the MLB level until the new stadium opens.  And there is no discernible sign that any pieces are in place for that to happen.

For those not watching:
Springer hits a soft liner toward first.  It bounces off the bag and kicks low thru the wicket of Bellinger.

Camera cuts to Springer standing on second,  huge smile, pointing into the dugout.

Pitching change,  back from break they show Springer looking up and seeing that an error was charged,  and he's non-plussed as he protests verbally and with body language.  Finally they change it back and he's all smiles again.

Giles never struck me as an intellectual, and baseball  is ultimately a cerebral game. Adrenaline carry carry you physically sometimes, but emotions have to be under control, especially as a pitcher.  I think he often struggled with that part of his game.

ETA: to clarify, you can pitch with “fire” and determination, but you can’t let emotion dictate which pitch you throw next. If you’re getting squeezed, you have to adjust, you can’t get into a dick measuring contest with the ump. If a guy hits a fastball, you can’t be afraid to throw it the next time up. A fastball may not be the best pitch, but you can’t be sacred to throw it if it is. You can’t keep throwing a guy fastballs because you’re pissed off and want to announce your presence with authority. Ultimately you have to pitch with a purpose. Giles seemed to get lost in that sometimes.

The marathon AB in the 9th against Cle struck me then as a pitcher who lost sight of what the real goal was.

Giles called up today by Jays, to be their closer.
https://www.mlb.com/bluejays/news/ken-giles-to-get-new-start-with-blue-jays/c-288097468

I liked Giles while he was here, pulled for him,  felt for him when he struggled, especially when he lost the closer title in the WS (telling that for every player who struggled last postseason, he was ther only one that was taken out of his designated role).

I was in Arlington last year when AJ called on him to get his first multi-inning save.  He got it and it was a big win,  and a big step as the were a few more such saves down the stretch.

But boy did he prove to be a head case.  I usually am fine seeing ex-Astros do well after leaving.   If he gives a mea culpa I guess that would help. Right now I don't know how I feel about him.

He's still several notches above Gomez so there's that.

Just another comment on the weakness of the house arrest excuse (and then I'll stop); they used an enlarged ant to get around the house arrest problem in AM&TW, so why would that not have worked in order to get a fairly powerful ally in to the IW fight?

By solving the problem for AM&TW, they torpedoed their own rationale for IW.

I have often wondered if the Astros could go after Beltre to DH.  His power has dropped off quite a bit this year, but maybe he'd have an easier time staying healthy as a DH.

Me too.

Beltre can still expand the hitting zone beyond the strike zone making him a tough out.

He's had a hard time staying healthy the past 2 seasons. 94 G last year,  74 so far this year.

All a moot point now I guess.

That was shit. Another pitching gem flushed down the toilet.

Bregman,  our best hitter in the lineup,  was up with the game on the line and had 3 juicy FBs, swung at 1 that split the zone but could just weakly foul it.

Work backwards from there to find other near misses/missed chances.  But that was the AB of the game.

8th
Colomé (RHP) pitching
Josh takes a FB down the middle,  misses a slider badly,  but worked the count full before flying out to LF
Stassi smokes a single to left
Kemp looks foolish,  Ks swinging
Springer falls behind 0-2, almost gets his bell rung high and tight 1-2, takes one in the dirt 2-2, takes high/inside again 3-2, finally walks
Bregman takes a freaking cookie 0-1, another 0-2, next once is low 1-2, inside 2-2, fouls a mistake (middle/middle), takes a ball in the dirt 3-2, Ks swinging on a slider.

The 2-2 pitch to Bregman was the one to hit.

Remember the time Biggio was hit but the ump would not award him 1B?

If Kemp would learn that he's not a power hitter, he could easily hit .300-.320.

He needs to party like it's 1979 and the Astrodome is home sweet home.

My stance when it comes to these things is wait and see. I've spent the last 30 minutes combing the internet and very very little actual info is out there.

...

There isn't anything out there as far as details.  There is a court date coming up,  and depending on privacy laws in Canada there may be info then.

Reading between the lines,  I'm guessing/hoping the FO knows his side of the story and hopefully hers.

I still trust Lunhow et al., and am willing to give Osuna the benefit of the doubt,  or at least the benefit of due process.

Chapman, by the way, was suspended for 30 games. Osuna for 75.

I don't care for this move either,  but you cannot use those two suspension lengths to gauge how how heinous one infraction was compared to the other.

This is MLB we're talking about.  It took them until 2016 to realize that domestic violence is bad.

I’m glad to see Giles getting a fresh start somewhere else. Dude just couldn’t build up any good will here and never seemed to be wholly part of the team.

He was fully a part of the team.

He couldn't control ABs or his emotions. Of the 2, the latter was his  ultimate failing.

You explained it well,  and hit on something that's part of the larger problem: 1) getting favorable counts and 2) doing something productive when it happens.

Harris and now Devo are major concerns, and Sipp has regressed.

I didn't realize it until I looked at the dates, but it's been a full month without Correa now. Last game was June 25.

I'm hoping they're simply being cautious/patient with CC similar to last year.

I'm also hoping we don't have to endure August 2017 again this year.

Pretty sure the house arrest angle was the writers way of explaining the absence of Hawkeye and The Antman.  And yes,  it's a little flimsy that Cap (Cap? Cap?!) wouldn't have rounded up everyone but hey,  they had to make 2 movies.

Agree that Michelle Pfeiffer's last minute instructions to Scott will likely prove important.

Also: I still love Michelle Pfeiffer.

I don't think he is a prick. He chose Arlington because his wife has a life-long friend there and preferred it. And then there is this   https://www.mlb.com/news/rangers-cole-hamels-donates-house-to-charity/c-263734826

That decision was all Mr. Hamels, not Mrs. Hamels.  There was something he didn't like about the Astros, and he nixed it. Maybe he was one of the union guys who didn't like that totally unfair,  lowball contract the Astros forced Singleton to sign (poor guy, thinking for himself).  Maybe he's afraid of math.  But the Astros were in first when he blocked the trade,  so I don't buy the contender angle either.

I usually think of him when I read baseball people praising the  organization in general and the pitching program in particular.

Anyway,  glad he is charitable,  but as a fan screw him.

It's not like they've been stinking up the joint lately, but they need to wake up and shake those clubs behind them in the standings.  The A's pull out another and inch a bit closer.

They went 8 innings Tuesday without a hit,  and managed 1 official hit last night.   With Arlington coming to town, let's hope we see some barrels on balls from the home team.

And eventually a healthy Correa should help.

Probably pleading his case for some form of interference that would give everyone 90 more feet.

I don't know what the actual rule is, but I can't recall a play at the dugout fence that players haven't helped keep their guy (and sometimes even the other team) from going head first over the fence.

I suspect something along these lines.

Curious what other offers were on the table from other teams (or under the table from FTY) for the O's to send Britton to the Evil Empire several days ahead of the deadline.

Does Giles have any trade value other than as an add in?
