This is nonsense. What do you think scouts do? Much of their job when scouting major league teams is to pick up details which help their team win. To do it with cameras instead of writing a report is a guarantee of accuracy. Scouts sit behind home plate or in a press box. Is someone saying they can see the catcher’s signs from their seats?

Headline on CBS Sports was "Astros sent email asking scouts to steal signs".  Details schmetails.

Some yahoo yesterday was expounding on how the Astros could easily have some anonymous looking guy sitting in Torchy's, watching the catcher's sign and signaling by a gesture...touching his cap, sipping his beer, etc.  I explained that it was hard enough to pick up the catcher's sign from the mound, 60 feet away, and it's pretty much impossible to see it from the centerfield bleachers 475 feet away...and not to get me started on the hitter picking out one guy in a sea of thousands.  He didn't buy it.  He's convinced that if you sit in the outfield stands, you have pretty much the same detailed view as you have sitting on your couch.

Just a quick back of the envelope almanac survey; the only superteams (105+ wins) who’ve played in the ws against 90-96 or so win teams and won have been the NYY, and the BoSox last year. Many have lost outside of that restriction. Winning the WS is a formidable task in any event

Correa's RBI hit deflects off Rendon's glove,  his the short wall instead of going into the corner, keeping Carlos at 1st and Alvarez at 3rd.

Not the craziest of outcomes for that particular ball (may have hit that wall without the deflection), and Alvarez may not get around from 1st to home.   But it would have been nice to see it rattle around down there.

Several years ago I read a great postgame quote from Jim Leyland.   I've searched for it but can't find it.  Might have been 2011, definitely was postseason.

He basically said decisions pop up in the game,  and the interesting ones are interesting because there's no clear answer as to which one is 'right'.  So don't come at him with indignation at a decision because the other choice had about the same chance of failing as the one that was made.

I just watched the clip on At Bat. Hinch clarifies he and Cole agreed he would not appear in the middle of an inning (for the reasons you all know) and would pitch only to protect a win. That will not shut up the idiots, but it is clear Cole understood and was on board with the pitching plan.

Did you watch Greinke’s interview? He regretted the pitch selection and said he had to shake (signs off) to get to it. He said the location was good, but it was the wrong pitch. Watched the replay, and it looked like a changeup.

Also, the 2-1 pitch to Soto was a strike called a ball to go to 3-1.

Yep saw that.  Like that Grienke said that.   

It was really special watching him yesterday.

And that "ball" was horrible in a huge spot.  The robots are coming.  This crew went a long way to ending the most iconic part of their profession.

On a lighter note,  we were in section 105 (formerly known as Keuchel's corner).

The seats were fantastic.  Afforded a great view of the field and the pitch path (up down was easy,  just couldn't tell in/out).  The fans were into it.  Stood during all the action until the bottom fell out.  Seemed to be the case across the stadium.

Don't know how it was on TV, but the HPU seemed to have a delayed strike call.   May have just been our angle. But we finally picked up on his left hip movement that seemed to be the trigger to initiating the called strike.   We had fun doing our own versions when Grienke got a call.

So shout out to section 105.

I'm extremely disappointed but the butterflies are gone and my heart rate is back down in the 60s.

We got to19 outs with a 2 run lead in G7, but you need at least 27 and the lead to celebrate.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the 2019 Astros.  Many cool moments,  special performances, and entertaining personalities. Didn't win the prize,  but came damn close.

And the Altuve walk off will always, always be a magnificent memory.

So bittersweet.   Mostly bitter at the moment.

That was a great atmosphere and experience until the 7th.

AJ watched Grienke give up a homer and a walk on a BS call, then he brought in his best reliever who failed.  And then the rest of the pen failed.  And Jake made an uncharacteristic error. Yes I would have preferred to keep Grienke in the 7th, or walk Soto, but that's only because the decisions made in the game didn't work.

So LOBsters were a huge problem again, and the bullpen turned a 1 run lead into a 4 run deficit, and we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Congrats to the Nats.  I hope I don't see any coverage for awhile.   Like ever.

Now we've got a long drive back to Dallas.

No chickens to count, but that was an impressive 3 game stretch from the Astros.

They managed to get something out of every spot in the order at one time or another.  Defensively they were mostly sharp with a few outstanding plays (Yuli!).   The pitching was really good without needing wicked stuff to do it.   They battled,  sometimes faltered, but didn't cave.

Now we've got 2 games to get 1.  JV, just be JV.
Bats,  be patient and move the line.   And pounce on mistakes.

The current edition of the Astros won the World Series in 2017, made the ALCS last season, and are back in the World Series this season.  What happened decades ago isn’t relevant now.  What is relevant is the team needs to wake up in all phases of the game in D.C. or they will watch the Nationals celebrate a World Championship.

And they'll get reminded of it daily at their spring training facility.
