Angels also interested in Tejada. A snippet about last year's trade deadline:

Quote
The Angels are reportedly interested in obtaining Baltimore shortstop Miguel Tejada. Last July, the teams agreed to a deal that would have sent Erick Aybar and Ervin Santana to Baltimore, but Orioles owner Peter Angelos nixed it.

From what I can tell, Santana is a 3rd or 4th starter. ERA 4.28 or higher last three season. Aybar doesn't seem to be much of anything.

I don't remember the numbers, but yes, he was hitting well when he suffered the broken arm.

Broken wrist on August 6, 2004.

.306/.358/.510, 5 HR, 16 RBI over previous 25 games.

This year:

.278/.313/.367, 1 HR, 7 RBI over previous 25 games.

The hanging slider was in Game 5...

So Passan has the game and the pitch wrong.

Talk Zone / Re: Bruntlett up; Jennings has shoulder tendinitis
« on: June 14, 2007, 07:31:59 pm »
So is trade value.  Wonder if he is overcompensating for the elbow that might be causing shoulder problems.

He was asked this specifically in the post game and said no. He seemed to be indicating that he was 'stretching it out' since he hadn't pitched in so long, and because his elbow felt so good he was really throwing hard, etc. Said the break in the game due to AE led to some stiffening, and Garner made the decision to pull him.

Jennings said in the postgame there should be no issue making his next start.

how is coming out after four innings encouraging?

Because it wasn't his elbow. Garner is thinking long term. Says that the shoulder bothered him in the last start too.

Only planned on 80 pitches for the day.

Very encouraged by Jennings, says elbow feels good. Could have gone max of 1 more inning.

If he can play SS, fine by me.

If I hear one person say "Burke to SS", my head will explode.  Yes, you can safely assume this means I am blocking 790AM from my dial.

If people are still riding Burke's jock, they must not watch the games.

3012
4 K's for Gunther.

3013
C'mon Moehler, whew.

PENCE!!! Berkman, Lee due.

and Embree is done.

3014
Yup... completely out of position.  Should have been routine.

Pinched for the DP. He is still in the same spot.

lucky asses.

broken bat looper.

He should explore that more often.

3020

Lefty. Don't know Embree's move.

3021

Not that I'm advocating this (so be gentle in any beat downs) but who wants to wager if this injury renews the Lidge for Tejada nonsense?

Tejada - .300/.358/.419, 7HR, 35RBI

3033
Qualls delivers with the big K. A couple of filthy sinkers.

3034

3035

3037

3039

Brownie reports fractured right fibula. 4-8 weeks.

3043
AE - fracture right fibula. 4-8 weeks.

3044
reverT with the K on 3 pitches. First two at the knees looking, third goes by with a weak wave of the bat.

3045
You could play a drinking game while listening to Milo.  Take a drink everytime he says the ticket office is waiting for you to call them.

Sounds like something we did in college. We just called it 'getting shitty'.

3046
so what Lee has is contagious?

we're talking Harnisch bad. Hidalgo even.

3048
Shit.

Speak truly - is anyone actually optimistic about this game?

I think we'll see some more bizarre shit in the next 3 innings.

3049
Scutaro puts a hanger in the Biggio boxes.

3050
Do-Ray pointing out that MoBerg remembered to stop, forcing the throw to 2b.

Wandy PR for Scott, pointing out just how ludicrous carrying 12 pitchers really is.

Scott was in a full out hobble down the line.

3051
Scott barely beats out a high chopper to 2nd that went for the 4-6-3.

3052
JD on the Ausmus bobblehead - Its an action figure, you can take it in the bathtub!

3053
Ensberg lines it past the diving shortstop into left. One run scores.

Luke to the dish.

Gaudin getting the hook.

3054
He better drive them in after AE gets back also.

That'll be next year.

3055
Burke gets hit on the hand on a check swing, HBP.

Gaudin pissed, gets told to get his coonass back on the mound, manager comes out.

3056
It actually bounced off his shin guard. And he was muttering the most delightful cursewords after he realized he didn't have the ball.

Makes more sense. Couldn't understand how it got so far away so quickly.

3057
Alright Burke, earn your fucking paycheck.

3058
Roof HAS to be closed, right?  Reason I ask is the box score I'm following shows weather data (91, broken clouds, hot, wind  7mph/S) rather than just saying "indoors".

Tis closed.

3059
PASSED FUCKING BALL?!?!?!

Munson flips his glove out on a breaker moving down and away from a lefty. Ball hits him right on the heel and bounces beind the left handed hitter. Munson looks confused the whole time.

3060
Lee needs some remedial defensive training. Perhaps we could send him a copy of JimR's tome?

Lee needs a swift kick in the ass. Repeat as necessary.

3061
Dish Network?

Well, I think it was more induced by the AE injury. Couldn't really focus on the game.

But, as far as the satellite... DirecTV... last night I just didn't get FSH until very late in the game. Today, pregame was fine and then when the game started the video went out, followed by the audio. It came back on sometime later.

3062
Lee throws into third for some unknown reason, runner advances. IBB to Crosby for the lefty/lefty matchup with Cust.

3063
McLemore makes Chavez look ridiculous swinging through a high strike.

3064
Hey, Qualls does not have a fat ass.

Qualls is not anywhere near the Hidalgo club.

3065
Patti Smith - Adam on crutches with leg wrapped. Can't report anything.

3066
me neither...and I'm watching on TV.

It's all muddled sound and blurry images right now.

Yeah, strangely the same for me.

3067
Milo mumbling something about the elbow stiffening.

Just guesses from JD/Brownie. Nothing confirmed.

3068
Talk Zone / AE injured - taken from game on cart
« on: June 14, 2007, 02:32:04 pm »
AE went out on a fly ball to left. Lee comes slow, AE glances out to see where he is and Lee I guess takes this as a plea for help. Lee speeds up and has to slide to avoid taking Everett out, but slides into AE's planted foot. AE immediately grabs for the lower leg above the ankle.

Lots of flex above the ankle. No word yet on extent of injury.

3069
Great.  The reason they were able to play that lumbering fat ass back is because Everett was going to hustle out and get the shallow pops.  Now, he forgets this plan, and barrels in.  Unbefuckinglievable.  The only shut down defensive player they have, out for the season.

Lee was loafing, as usual. Pulled off, then came hard late, and then his fat ass couldn't gracefully get out of the way.

It was Lee's ball all the way.

3070
Who do we bring up?  Bruntlett?  Conrad?

My guess is Bruntlett.

3071
Loretta to SS, Ensberg to 3rd.

3072
AE hurt.

Shallow fly, Lee comes in, AE goes out. Lee slides into him, ball dropped.

Its maybe not broken. A lot of give above the ankle.

3073
Again, matches what I was sensing watching/listening to the games lately.  The ponches are starting to mount.

Yeah, but .345/.345/.552 over the same.

3074
League figuring him out?  Time to adjust...

A's have been pitching everything away. The 'frisbee' slider was at about his shoulders and he swung through it for the K.

3075
Thanks.  I was wondering after the dos ponches today if Hunter isn't prone to the K quite a bit, you know, when he isn't hitting a double or triple or something.  He loves to swing the bat, that's for sure.  Hmmm... if he plays about 100 games, he'll be near the 100 K for the season this year.  That's not too bad, a product of a hitter not afraid to swing.  You just hope he doesn't just flail at everything and stays on the breaking ball longer to give himself a chance with that pitch.

18 in the last 14 games. He's had at least one in every game except one over that stretch.

12 in the 26 prior.

3076
K, 2B, 2B, 1B

The single was off the glove of the first baseman, Carlos on 2nd had to hold. Trickled away into right and Lee gets his diesel fired up. Questionable send by Manso because Lee was dragging (3) 5 gallon buckets of Blue Bell. The throw was way up the 3rd baseline, so not close.

3077
30 K's in 40 games.

Somebody check my math:

Hunter Pence - 43 Games - 30 Ks?  Is this right?

BTW - Milo sucks!

3078
Berkman drives one Berkman style to left field for the double.

3079
Did Munson just get spiked on his throwing hand while making that tag?

More kicked by the back foot as he planted his throwing hand to make the tag.

3080
That's new.

He is doing a thing where he kinda flips it up like he is nervous. This inning, he was holding it with two hands until the windup and then doing the flip thing.

Yeah, its new.

3081
Munson won't hold his glove still behind the plate.

3082
Astros: the cure for what ails ya!

JD thought Suzuki would catch today. Yeah, fat chance.

3083
Kendall - 5x9 for the series with a HR.

3084
Chris Burke can kiss my ass.

3085
This guy's balls move all over the place (NTTAWWT). I wonder if he even knows where they're going to wind up.

Effectively wild. He's already thrown two frisbee sliders that stayed up.

3086
Why isn't Lee standing on 2nd? Could he be more of a shitty baserunner?

3087
Chavez pitch for the homer wasn't bad, typical Jennings 88-89mph fastball on the outside corner moving away. Chavez looking for it and drove it Berkman style the other way.

3088

Double plus E6 scores Kotsay,

Throw was fine, Munson set up in the wrong spot and Jennings set his large ass in the wrong spot for the backup

« on: June 13, 2007, 04:38:26 pm »
Quote
Rival executives are contacting the Astros about right-hander Brad Lidge, but one club official says the team would need to be "blown away" to trade the reliever now that he has returned to form and regained the closer's role.

The Astros probably would want a premium young catcher and promising young pitcher for Lidge. Some teams would regard that as too high a price, considering the financial commitment that such a trade also would entail.

Anyone arguing about sliding head first into first is retarded.

Running through the bag is a no doubter unless you're trying to avoid a tag at first instead of the force.

I'm talking more general sliding head first.

Then what the fuck are we talking about? Ensberg was sliding head first into first base.

Its first base. He doesn't have to stop.

Oh, and since this is about frito pie... any of you Austinites ever eat the frito pie at Bert's? They use chopped beef instead of chili. It's not the best BBQ in town or anything, and I don't think real frito pie allows for substituting the chili, but it ain't a bad lunchtime treat.

Dickey's will also use chopped beef in the Frito Pie. Damn good.

``What are you supposed to do? Just sit around with ice on you while you're teammates are involved in a bench-clearing brawl? You can't do that,'' Berkman said. ``No matter what happens, I don't care how much they fine me or how much they suspend me, I'd do it again in a heartbeat.''
Link

Yes, you moron, that's exactly what you're supposed to do.  For the good of the team.  That's why the Manager runs out and grabs you before you get to the umpire.  Because you are important to the team, not some macho bullshit. Berkman was facing a one day suspension, now, if Watson wants to, (which he may not) he could give him much more.  Berkman seems to be perpetually unaware of the situation on the field.  Also, what's with the ice?

"There is an automatic suspension for coming back on the field, which I wasn't aware of at the time," Berkman said. "I wasn't thinking about that at the time and even if I had known it, I probably would have still run out there.

2) Lose playing time
3) Suck off the bench
4) Beg for another chance
5) Suck
6) Complain
7) Suck
8) Get sent down
9) Complain
10) Suck worse at a lower level
11) Get called up
12) Suck

14) Get more playing time
15) Score in a ML game

I should have never quit after LL.

Real question:

Does anyone in here find it the least bit "cool" that we're playing AL West teams this week?  Does anyone who cares about the actual sport still find Interleague (not just the stupid "rivalries") interesting?

I honestly don't think I do.  For a while, it was kind of interesting, but I'd much rather be playing the Reds or Brewers tonight.

Really doesn't matter to me. Can't say I'd rather see the Astros play any particular team.

The cool thing about interleague play is that the Astros finally get to face guys like Mark Kotsay and Jason Kendall.

This is EXACTLY what Kendall needed to bust out of his season-long slump.  I bet he's been looking forward to this series for 2 years.

Kendall - .194/.236/.204

Astros first baseman Lance Berkman dropped his appeal of his two-game suspension and will begin serving it tonight against the Oakland A's. Berkman will be eligible to return to action Thursday.

....

"We checked with the commissioner's office and they were fairly adamant the appeal was going to do no good. In my mind, there's no sense in dragging it out or having something hanging over my head. Just get it out of the way and move on."

Quote
A Courier-Journal sports reporter had his media credential revoked and was ordered to leave the press box during the NCAA baseball super-regional yesterday because of what the NCAA alleged was a violation of its policies prohibiting live Internet updates from its championship events.

...

U of L circulated a memo on the issue from Jeramy Michiaels, the NCAA's manager of broadcasting, before Friday's first super-regional game. It said blogs are considered a "live representation of the game" and that any blog containing action photos or game reports would be prohibited.

"In essence, no blog entries are permitted between the first pitch and the final out of each game," the memo said.

...

During the middle of yesterday's game, Courier-Journal representatives were told by two members of the U of L athletic staff that if the school did not revoke Bennett's credential it would jeopardize the school's chances of hosting another NCAA baseball event.

"If that's true, that's nothing short of extortion and thuggery," Ivory said. "We will be talking to our attorneys (today) to see where we go from here."

I got the distinct impression, over these last few shows, that we weren't supposed to like Tony and his family anymore: Tony killed Chris and was deconstructed as a psychological fraud by Dr. Melfi's peers; Carmela blamed Tony's fucked up genes for AJ's pathetic suicide attempt;  AJ's pathetic suicide attempt; Meadow hooked up with the son of a made guy.

They were made to look very ordinary. And everyone wanted to deny their own reality... that is when they are most happy.

I have a slightly different view:

AJ finally looks like he's back on "track" so to speak.

AJ is back to denying reality, like the rest of the Soprano clan. All of his pissing and moaning, and all he needed was a new hot girlfriend and a new car.

Tony accepts Meadow's decision to go to law school when she explains that her decision was based upon the way he was treated.

Meadow fucking sold out, like the rest of her family (Carmela especially) for a job that pays $170k. So much for helping the little guy.

Uncle Junior probably has alzheimers disease.  Tony realizes that he doesn't need to hate Junior anymore and just pities him.

Tony realizes that being the boss of North Jersey doesn't mean anything, and in the end you die alone in a nursing home and forget where you put the money you worked so hard to earn. Tony sees himself.

Janice is going to be taken care of financially.

Janice is still a shallow, self centered, money grubbing whore.

Phil Leotardo is dead and Tony makes peace with Brooklyn.

Phil is dead, and now everyone can get back to earning... including his own guys. He got on his soapbox about how mistreated he was and how Tony didn't respect the thing. Problem was, this was his own personal crusade and nobody else gave a fuck. Its only about earning. That is why he got whacked.

Paulie looks to be Tony's right hand.

No matter how tough Paulie might appear, he is still a pussy. He bitched and moaned for the entire show about how he never got respect from Tony. Whether is was when Chris was promoted or nobody came to see him in jail. Then, when Tony offers him Capo, he fucking pusses out because the position was cursed. Or whatever insanity he used to justify it.

Sil is probably dead.  Chris is dead.  Bobby is dead.

Tony doesn't even seem to grieve for these people.

Thanks to JD for alerting me to it...Chris Sampson is in fact 2nd in the majors (before tonight) in fewest pitches per inning.  Only some schmuck rookie (Greg Maddux) is lower.

But, of course, Sampson's stuff isn't very good and he doesn't have much of an arm, so I'm sure we'll trade him or have him fight for the 5 spot again next season.

what happened? my two radio stations are carrying the aggie game, and the "Brazos Bombers" of the texas colliegate league

Breaker up and in, around the letters, for strike 3 (Lance RH). Lance is pissed, starts giving the ump lip. Ump points to dugout, Lance steps up, Lee gets in between. Garner runs out, collects Lance, who then yells over his shoulder and gets the hook.

Garner gets his moneys worth, tossed as well.

Last Sunday Purpura was saying how he's glad Soriano didn't accept his offer and they were able to get Lee.  Also, the Giants offered Lee even more money.  So "bad contract", for us reality hostages, is not accurate.

What the fuck does it matter to any of us if its a bad contract? Every contract is bad when the player is fucking up, and every contract is a steal when a guy is doing good. This logic causes contracts to change from bad to good from year to year, and sometimes within the same year... see Bagwell, Jeff; Lidge, Brad; Berkman, Lance.

He's given up at least one triple this year by not hustling into the corner at Minute Maid...

I have noticed recently that he is hustling pretty good on the balls down into the corner. Maybe somebody mentioned it, and maybe somebody will mention these baserunning flubs.

The thing when he returns to the base (whether it be a ground out, flyball, etc.) where he turns his whole body around and kind of shuffles to the base with his head down is especially irritating.

Cardinals General manager Walt Jocketty said Thursday that he is interested in upgrading (the starting pitching) but remains a hostage to reality.

"There's nothing available," Jocketty said. "Who is going to give up starting pitching now?"

"We don't have much choice," Jocketty said. "We tried to talk to other clubs about a deal. There's not any starting pitching available."

"I think when people talk about getting another starter, that's unrealistic," manager Tony La Russa said. "I mean, how many teams are looking for starting pitching? ...

Talk Zone / Re: Question about an old rule regarding winning pitcher
« on: June 07, 2007, 08:48:17 pm »
10.17(b)(c)

Quote
(2) four innings of a game that lasts five innings on defense, then the official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher the relief pitcher, if there is only one relief pitcher, or the relief pitcher who, in the official scorer’s judgment was the most effective, if there is more than one relief pitcher.
Rule 10.17(b) Comment: It is the intent of Rule 10.17(b) that a relief pitcher pitch at least one complete inning or pitch when a crucial out is made, within the context of the game (including the score), in order to be credited as the winning pitcher. If the first relief pitcher pitches effectively, the official scorer should not presumptively credit that pitcher with the win, because the rule requires that the win be credited to the pitcher who was the most effective, and a subsequent relief pitcher may have been most effective. The official scorer, in determining which relief pitcher was the most effective, should consider the number of runs, earned runs and base runners given up by each relief pitcher and the context of the game at the time of each relief pitcher’s appearance. If two or more relief pitchers were similarly effective, the official scorer should give the presumption to the earlier pitcher as the winning pitcher.
(c) The official scorer shall not credit as the winning pitcher a relief pitcher who is ineffective in a brief appearance, when at least one succeeding relief pitcher pitches effectively in helping his team maintain its lead. In such a case, the official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher the succeeding relief pitcher who was most effective, in the judgment of the official scorer.
Rule 10.17(c) Comment: The official scorer generally should, but is not required to, consider the appearance of a relief pitcher to be ineffective and brief if such relief pitcher pitches less than one inning and allows two or more earned runs to score (even if such runs are charged to a previous pitcher). Rule 10.17(b) Comment provides guidance on choosing the winning pitcher from among several succeeding relief pitchers.

reverT has been effective before, and may be again in the future, but I prefer the Hunsicker school of thought that relivers are fungible and unpredictable.

reverT is paid for, not injured, and has also shown to be highly effective in the majors. Doesn't seem like now is the time to make a change. Maybe add one of the other guys, but not cut bait on reverT.

It's obvious someone within this organization believes in Burke.  Maybe the trip to AAA changes things up for Burke...at least that's what I'd guess Gar would have to be thinking if he gave him another shot.  Burke wouldn't be the first player fail, be sent to the minors, and then succeed after a callup back to the majors.

Burke in center as a starter is over. Unless someone gets an injury.

What about Burke?  I wasn't a big fan of playing Pence in RF, but if Scott doesn't show some consistency soon is there a chance that Gar might consider playing Burke in CF and moving Pence to RF?  If yes, then I'd assume Ensberg would be reinserted into the lineup (again with the faint hope that he will actually slug the ball) moving Loretta back to the bench.  Ensberg has hit a few homeruns lately.  Also, once Bidge hits 3000, you replace him with Loretta and insert him behind Burke in the #2 spot and hope for the best.

What? They already conducted this experiment and it failed.

Only think I can think of is that you have to announce a double switch when it happens.  You can't decide after play has begun that you want to move players in the batting order.  So if Garner didn't announce to the umpires that he was substituting Lidge for Berkman before Lidge started warming up, he can't do it later.

That is what JD guessed happen. But Gar did go to the umpire to make the change, JD thought.

If Berkman is hurt, is there any benefit in hiding it this long?

Who is he hiding it from? The club? Doesn't seem like it. The fans? Maybe, but that isn't really important.

Also, the length of the injury is only speculative. Could be recent, but maybe not:

Why are folks trying to rewrite history as if Houston knew they would be in this position today when they made the trade?

Because Ringolsby reported (and inbred JdJO repeated) that Jennings had elbow problems last year so severe that he didn't throw between starts. Nevermind that such a report was based on nothing more than the emanations of Ringolsby's ass.

Very much appreciate anyone who can listen to the locals without bursting a blood vessel.  I can't do it anymore, but this was important to know about.  The two sides haven't been talking contract for several weeks now.  And it seems only reasonable that anyone would be concerned about Jennings elbow.  Although, he's never had any trouble before.  And 12, in this market?  I don't think that's "unreasonable".

This is not a wise thing to say publicly.

That said... getting Woody kicked out of a Coors start might not be a horrible idea.

He just insinuated it, nothing specific. The two hosts were spoojing on themselves over the idea. Purpura reminded them that nothing may happen tonight... might be the next series.

As the GM, or manager, or whoever, I think you have to let it be known that if a shitbag pitcher throws at your best player over a personal beef that it will dealt with it on the field. Whether it ever happens or not.

Talk Zone / Re: Jennings wants 12 million per?

EMT's are standing by.  Thanks for taking one for the team.

Purpura knows for a fact that Lee and the shitbag pitcher had a beef that went back to the WBC. Garner will take care of it on the field - insinuating that someone is gonna get dotted... but not in a close game situation.

On Jennings - No discussions about contract since spring training. Most important thing is to get him healthy. He is injured and we have to go through the season to see where he is and then talk dollars. Jennings should understand that. You sign a player to help the team, not to justify a trade. We had to give up good players, probably too much, but Astros needed a number two. Have to evaluate his injury, no commitment until we know he can pitch next year. No committment until after the season.

Talk Zone / Re: Question concerning the "Infield Fly Rule"
« on: June 04, 2007, 09:47:14 am »
Quote
An INFIELD FLY is a fair fly ball (not including a line drive nor an attempted bunt) which can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort, when first and second, or first, second and third bases are occupied, before two are out. The pitcher, catcher and any outfielder who stations himself in the infield on the play shall be considered infielders for the purpose of this rule.
When it seems apparent that a batted ball will be an Infield Fly, the umpire shall immediately declare “Infield Fly” for the benefit of the runners. If the ball is near the baselines, the umpire shall declare “Infield Fly, if Fair.”
The ball is alive and runners may advance at the risk of the ball being caught, or retouch and advance after the ball is touched, the same as on any fly ball. If the hit becomes a foul ball, it is treated the same as any foul.
If a declared Infield Fly is allowed to fall untouched to the ground, and bounces foul before passing first or third base, it is a foul ball. If a declared Infield Fly falls untouched to the ground outside the baseline, and bounces fair before passing first or third base, it is an Infield Fly.
Rule 2.00 (Infield Fly) Comment: On the infield fly rule the umpire is to rule whether the ball could ordinarily have been handled by an infielder—not by some arbitrary limitation such as the grass, or the base lines. The umpire must rule also that a ball is an infield fly, even if handled by an outfielder, if, in the umpire’s judgment, the ball could have been as easily handled by an infielder. The infield fly is in no sense to be considered an appeal play. The umpire’s judgment must govern, and the decision should be made immediately.
When an infield fly rule is called, runners may advance at their own risk. If on an infield fly rule, the infielder intentionally drops a fair ball, the ball remains in play despite the provisions of Rule 6.05 (L). The infield fly rule takes precedence.

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/official_rules/definition_terms_2.jsp

Enacted in 1895 to prevent an infielder from purposely dropping a pop up in order to create a double or triple play situation.

No shit, Joe?  He'll have 3000 hits and be in some whack club with only Hank Aaron and Tris Speaker or something, 37 years with the same team and was the best 2B in the NL for a decade.

Piniella melt down in the 8th. Kickin dirt all over the third base umpire. Kicked his hat. Gets some more. Then kicks his hat 2 more times around the field.

Play was ball got away from the catcher, runner tries to advance but gets put out. Throw was there in plenty of time.

Bleachers throw all their trash on the field, Braves have to leave the field.

Froemming came over to stop him, Lou pushed him away. Some other big mother fucker (umpire) came over got in between Lou and the 3rd base ump.

Yup, that was an out, and it wasn't even a difficult call: the runner was off the bag while the tag was on him. But that's the way this season is going for the 'Stros.

Nah, its this de-emphasis by the umps of making the runner actually execute the slide. JD is always saying shit like 'if you beat the throw, you are going to get that call.'

Talk Zone / Satan thinks Weaver is the missing piece for the Co-ards
« on: June 01, 2007, 07:27:27 pm »
Quote
Last year, another longtime Boras client, Jeff Weaver, was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals after a poor start with the Angels in Anaheim. Weaver was dominant in the postseason, and the Cardinals won the World Series, but St. Louis offered Weaver only a one-year, $5 million contract—which Boras found insulting. “That’s what you’d offer a relief pitcher,” he says.

Weaver eventually signed with the Seattle Mariners for $8.3 million. “You have to respect that teams have a right to make their own decisions,” Boras says, before turning around and passing judgment on Cardinals general manager Walt Jocketty. “Here’s a GM who never played the game saying, ‘We’re going to go with our young guys,’ and I go, ‘You can’t.’”

The Cardinals simply blew it, Boras concludes. “The Cardinals not signing Jeff Weaver is how you don’t win divisions, and my prediction is the St. Louis Cardinals won’t win their division this year.” (At press time, the Cardinals were near the bottom of the National League Central.)

Behind his attitude are two tenets Boras lives by: When you know the market, don’t embarrass the player; and don’t assume the player will sign for less because he likes the city he is playing in. In response to critics who say it’s all about money, Boras says, “Really? I think it’s about respect.”

Do most people buy sling boxes to watch their local programming while away from home or to set it up in another part of the country so they can watch others' local programming from anywhere?

From what I have read, most do it so they can watch their TV when they travel. Or, now, on their mobile phone anytime they are away from home. For someone that does alot of traveling, its very convenient. Especially if you are slinging Tivo.

What's a spot beam? I get all FSN Houston games on the Dish.

Gizz is right on, all the FSN are carried on all spots.

The locals (i.e. KNWS, Fox Game of the Week) are only sent out to focused areas around the market they are intended to serve. Signing up with a Houston address in a foreign market will not allow you to receive those games.

3371
Talk Zone / Re: MLB notices Slingbox
« on: June 01, 2007, 12:39:53 pm »
I thought about trying to fool them so I could at least watch MLB.TV. But the blackouts are based on Zip Codes, and they verify your Zip Code by checking the billing address of your credit card. So I guess the trick is to find a friend in Houston who will let you use their credit card. Or get a P.O. Box in Houston and use it as a credit card billing address.

That's still a lot of trouble to go to, just to watch someone's product. I'm willing to pay the fuckers lots of money to watch the Astros ... it just seems that Rupert Murdoch is paying them more to make sure I CAN'T.

Don't forget spot beams. The Houston spot doesn't even cover DFW which means I couldn't pull such a scam if I wanted to.

In my mind as far as talent goes:

RoyO
Jennings
Sampson
Wandy
Woody

While that may be true, it seems like I remember Woodrow was signed as a number 3 and is making number 3 money. Not that it matters.

I think his stats still hold up as an average number 3.

Also, I think talent is the wrong word. Ability or performance or something is a better description.

I find very little to be positive about his work. His command sucks. His stuff is just as bad. His BP fastball doesn't help either. The Astros made a mistake picking him up. Yet we'll have to endure a season or two of his mediocre horseshit. I'll go so far as to predict that Woody will lose his tenth game before he wins number two. You can't contend with pitchers who are so far under .500.

We fucking get it. You don't like him. All your bitching and moaning will not make him go away.

I was trying to explain to someone what Lane looked like at the plate last night. The best I could come up with is one of the AL pitchers that hadn't hit their entire career and were forced to for the first time since college or high school in an interleague game.

Last year, the St. Looie Jakes proved you can suck up until the last series of the year and still make the playoffs.  The Jakes literally were set to make history as the worse collapse in a division clinch since the Phillies.  They went from there to beat up the Dojers and then take the steMs by simply out-pitching them.

The Jakes also had two 8 game losing streaks last year, and one 7 game losing streak.

how the hell did he hang onto the ball? he was out cold before he hit the wall.

I don't know, but someone on a Redlegs forum speculated that Hopper (CF) put it in his glove before the umpire arrived. Can't really tell from that video.

Running at full speed towards the wall, Freel and right fielder Norris Hopper made contact, with Freel's head and neck striking Hopper's shoulder.

Although Hopper got up, Freel remained down and motionless on the warning track for several minutes and facing the fence on his side. Reds trainers, team medical director Dr. Tim Kremchek and manager Jerry Narron were among those who rushed out to Freel, who somehow still made the catch and held on to the ball for the first out.

Berkman is the heart of the problem, I agree.  Getting him going would be a #1 priority, hands down.  But even if Lance starts raking, it won't fix all our problems.  It certainly would help a LOT, but we wouldn't suddenly be scoring 6 runs a game.

Bidge may not be a "problem", but he isn't helping our offense either.  I don't complain about Ausmus and AE, because they have a different role other than offense.  But Biggio, to a degree.. he has to carry his weight with his bat.  As much as I love heart (and he's ALWAYS been my favorite player), that doesn't deserve a starting position... and he isn't exactly out there for his vacuum D.  He is batting .228 with 3 HR, and an OPS of .661.  That is disgusting.  I can't disagree more about Biggio playing to expectations... you were "expecting" him to go for .230 and 12 HR this year???  I doubt it.  I think he has earned his right to go for 3,000 this season, but he certainly should not be playing everyday.  The problems of Ensberg/team have forced Gar to play Bidge more than he wants to I'm sure, but at some point you gotta recognize Biggio isn't doing squat out there.

Recognize Bidge isn't doing squat? Sure, I am not fucking blind. He isn't hitting for shit. He is in a slump. Fine, can't argue with you. However, he'll come around, get his 3000 and be on the bench more.

But, he is NOT the reason this team has dropped 7 in a row.

The blueprint for this team dictates that Lance has to hit about .300 and slug about .580-.600. Which he is capable of and which he will eventually come around too. Until he starts doing that, its going to be a long season. And all the rest of this is fucking whiney ass bullshit.

3422
Talk Zone / Re: Golden Sombrero
« on: May 27, 2007, 02:40:51 pm »
No fuck that. You must have some pretty brutal expectations if Biggio is playing to them. He's a terrible 2nd baseman and he's not hitting at all. Berkman was slugging .346 on June 20, 2005. He'll turn it around. Who thinks Biggio will?

The "well he sucks but we EXPECT him to suck so it's not a problem" is absolute bullshit.

The expectation, I would guess, is that he would hit about .250-.260. If you disagree with that as a valid plan for 2B for the Houston Astros of 2007, then you just have to disagree. There is one reason why he is out there and we all know what that is.

Its not that the Astros expected him to 'suck', but they didn't expect Bidge to carry the team either. If Bidge had 7 or 8 more hits he'd be at .260 and no one be saying a damn thing about him. But I doubt those 7 or 8 hits would carry the offense the way a fully productive Lance, and a half ass 3B or RF would.

Talk Zone / Re: Golden Sombrero
« on: May 27, 2007, 12:10:36 pm »
Biggio's expectations aren't consistent with trying to win.

Fuck that. Complaining about Bidge is like complaining about AE and Ausmus. JimR is right, just like AE and Ausmus Bidge is playing to expectations... and like mihoba points out, with the same heart he has had for the last 20 years.

The problem with this team is Lance, 3B, RF and the suddenly mortal pitching staff. Everything else is just whiney ass bullshit.

I've been watching that game periodically and Girardi keeps referencing Lidge and the trade chips both Philly and Atlanta have. Girardi mentioned Aaron Rowand as a potential CFer for the Astros but quickly hedged by noting Pence's quality play, then went on to praise switch-hitting catcher uberprospect Saltalamacchia and the big return he'd command on the trade market. Nothing real here, just b.s. speculation.

He didn't need to seal the door, the equipment was turned off.  He could have just walked out of the room put on the scuba gear and jumped into the water.  Or even just dove into the water and swam up.  There was no reason to *not* let the building flood.  And he'd been saved several times from Desmond's visions.  Desmond himself said he didn't *have* to die, only that if they followed that scenario, he *would* die.  They just could have made it a little more necessary.

They could have cut the line on the beach and avoided the whole thing.

Disagree. The missing piece of 2005 might have been Lee, but that was in concert with Berkman, MVPesque Ensberg, Lane with 25 HRs, Bidge with 25HRs and a pitching staff that was unbelievable.

Berkman needs to be Berkman, but there also needs to be help at 3B and/or RF.

Negative.  Purp took over Nov 2004, coming of the first NLCS.  His first two offseasons (2004-5 and 2005-6) were off the back-to-back NLCS runs.  The 2006-7 offeason was his first time to come off a year they hadn't made the playoffs.

There was no game 7 of the 2005 NLCS. Picking nits because I am bored.

I'm of the opinion that it is time to cut bait with MoBerg and Lame. In light of our plight at the plate, I'm also beginning to wonder whether OP is a luxury that we can't afford to have right now, especially given that he's not producing.

And now they're playing Jefferson Starship. Everyone's a winner.

Now they are playing Omar singing Broadway by Goo Goo Dolls.

Good thing that SS thing worked out for him.

HOLY SHIT! MAKE IT STOP! Brownie seems to think that Omar wrote that song.

Now Brownie apologizes for thinking Yamaguchi was a gymnast.

So... something just happened? Scott? A wall?

Klesko hammered a letter high FB down the right field line to the wall. Scott got there quick and got it in to hold Lewis at 3rd.

Yeah, I mean....there are lots of combinations I can think of that make more sense.

Loretta, Lamb, Berkman, Lee, Pence
Pence, Loretta, Lamb, Lee, Berkman
Loretta, Pence, Lee, Berkman, Lamb
and on and on.

Its L, R, L, R, L, R, R, R, R.

Ah ha.  Lamb leading off.

Ah.  Ha.

I want Lamb in the lineup.  I was thinking more along the lines of......5th.  6th.  You know, with people on ahead of him to drive in.

Agreed. If this is the strategy, then Gunther should lead off.

Thanks for the meager "encourage[ment]" but I think Talkzone should be renamed "We Eat Our Young Here."

Your biggest problem is what pravata pointed out early on. There were two other threads that were pretty lengthy that discussed the very issues of your original post. I think that is clear evidence that you didn't read nearly enough before you posted.

What's the advantage to his method?  Looks like it would be harder to throw to second like on Saturday when Wandy picked the runner off and he threw the ball into left field.  Just curiious.

Don't forget that Berkman is left handed and has to adjust his positioning accordingly. Whoever you are comparing him to in your mind might throw right...

Uh...I changed the Willie Bloomquist wikipedia page to say that he wasn't drafted because he had no penis.  Don't bother to check, it's already been changed back.

Why did I do this?  The Imp of the Perverse!

Try "... because some people say he has no penis. Discuss amongst yourselves."

Yeah, what was I thinking.  Get rid of Sampson!

If Gunther had been at the proper Edmonds baiting depth, perhaps the game turns out different. But, probably not.

Just simply outstanding the way they mastered the Jints lineup.

You are delusional. If you hadn't noticed, the Astros lost last night.

And AE gets part of the blame for not catching that flare to center.

If I could sum up responses:
1. I'm an idiot and maybe a Yankees fan.
2. I should shut up.
3. I'm wrong about worrying about Everett's bat (okay, I give).
4. Burke doesn't deserve another chance.
5. Not much in favor of Lane and Ensberg, hard to find a consensus here.

Or in other words:

Read more, post less.

3493
I think you misunderstood my point.  My point wasn't what it would actually take to make a trade for him; it was that I honestly can't imagine Seattle trading Ichiro.  I don't care how close he says the sides are.  They're going to throw a boatload of money at him until he takes it.

You are probably right, Ichiro probably won't leave Seattle. And he will probably make A-Rod money next year.

3494
Lidge for Ichiro?  Done.

They aren't even close to winning, and Lidge seems more like a 'final piece' trade and less of a rebuild trade. But, yeah, duct tape Ensberg, Lane, Burke to him as well... if we are dreaming.

Seriously though, a good young pitcher or two (Albers, Sampson, someone else that I can't think of) with Lidge might do the trick.

3495
As far as I understand, there's zero chance.  Seattle wants to re-sign Ichiro more than anything this offseason and have publicly made that known.

If they trade him, I imagine it would be for Berkman or Oswalt.

Not even close. He has a half year on a contract with no options, etc. Berkman and Oswalt are signed long term.

Ichiro was interviewed last week saying that the two sides weren't close on a deal. He was also crying about respect, and all that shit, so its probably all posturing.

The best Seattle could hope for is prospects, or perhaps a young 'MLB ready' player for the time remaining on Ichiro's contract. Or perhaps Lidge.

3496
Neither Minnesota nor Seattle look to be headed to the post-season as we're sitting in mid-May.  Ensberg/Lane, Qualls/Wheeler/Lidge, and a prospect not named Patton, say Albers or Guterriez and take on the entire rest of the contract for either?

Minnesota needs a right handed bat. Apparently they have several starters in the pipeline, and Nathan is or will be extended as closer.

Seattle needs pitching. They were interested in Benitez before the season started.

3497
Torii Hunter is the biggest name I can think of that might be available.

Torii is in a contract year. From Rosenthal:

Quote
Hunter might not be an elite hitter, but he's not a Metrodome creation, either; his career on-base percentage is five points higher on the road (.326-.321) and his slugging percentage four points higher (.471-.467). The Twins will need to consider trading Hunter if they fall out of contention, knowing how difficult it will be to re-sign him.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6834288

Ichiro is also in a contract year:

Quote
A person familiar with Ichiro's thinking, speaking to Newsday on the condition of anonymity, opined that the 33-year-old Suzuki will explore free agency now that he is so close to it. But the person further predicted that Suzuki will be very selective regarding his next employer.

...

...Seattle could quickly drop out of the pennant race and trade Ichiro by July 31. But I'll bet against that.

http://www.newsday.com/sports/printedition/ny-spken155172681apr15,0,7451716.column?page=1&coll=ny-sports-print

Quote
The possibility of losing Ichiro, an All-Star in each of his six seasons with the club, likely will loom over the Mariners. And there is more. Tony Attanasio, Ichiro's longtime agent, suggested the Mariners may be forced to part with Ichiro this summer -- before his contract expires.

"If it appears to them that they can't sign Ichiro," Attanasio said Tuesday afternoon, "they might have to trade him. If they didn't, they'd risk just getting a draft choice for him."

He was the only one who had a fucking clue last night.

Too many fat pitches taken by the Good Guys last night.

3499
Sampson and Williams.

I still think Garner should have let Sampson hit instead of Ensberg the other day.

3500

Scott, Palmiero, Lane

If that's the logic lets sit Lee and put Palmiero in left.

Scott and Lane would be shit off the bench. And they can only play an outfield position.

The Astros could play Lamb and Loretta everyday if they can find another left handed hitter for the bench. Bruntlett or Burke could fill the utility role. Ensberg and Lane would have to go.

Loretta everyday would be fine, but as someone pointed out earlier today... Lamb would look very average playing everyday. He is better, above average even, off the bench.
