The Navajo Grill in Fredericksburg is great for a nice night out.
Good one.

Emma & Ollie, Otto's, Farm Haus, Old German Bakery, Fburg Pie Company, Fresh Pickens, Sunset Grill.  Hondo's is fun, usually good music, the food is okay.  Look for "The Almost Patsy Cline Band", my aunt is the singer.

Drive to the Old Tunnel WMA, watch the bats come out (if they're still there this late), eat at Alamo Springs and go have beers at Luckenbach/Albert/Bankersmith

Not a Kerrville person but I can ask tonight and get back to you.

I know nothing about Crane Jr other than he's in his mid-30's... where'd he go to school, where'd he work afterwards?  Not that it's a be-all-end-all, but it's interesting to know.

0 penalties on the defense today, I believe.  Our new CB had a hell of a game.  Passrush finally showed up in the 2nd half, and they held Fournette to his fewest scrimmage yards of the year.

I'll give BoB and the scouts a ton of credit:  I was totally wrong about Howard, thought he'd be a project.  He's by far the best rookie OL in the NFL.

That was one of the most creative drives of BOB’s tenure. The Jags were flummoxed by the end.

Too bad it was punctuated with a typical miscue.
He's a fine OC.

Offense, stepping on their dicks the opening drive... BoB wasting timeouts while the clock is stopped. Awesome.
I have no idea who Mitchell Jr. is but he has no business being on the field.

That's a good point. You're right.

I kind of liked how it was originally set up - win at least one in New York and you've got JV and Cole fully rested at home. Shifting the bullpen game from 4 to 6 messes that up, but it's the ALCS. There's an insane amount of pressure every game.
4 games in 4 days puts a ton of pressure on their bullpen.

BOB and the staff coached a good game. The defense seemed to change the strategy in the 2nd half from allowing the chiefs to catch anything under 15 yards, which was an improvement. The Texans left a lot of points on the field and still won fairly convincingly for a road win in the NFL.

I’m bummed about Howard. The line has been improving and gelling, and he’ll now miss a year it seems.

If you don’t have a kicker trustworthy enough to attempt a 45 yarder in good conditions to seal a win, you don’t have a kicker.

A week after possibly his worst game as a pro, Watson's having his best.  Perfect QB rating with 6:24 to go.  Offense has been great today.

76
2 highpoints of the broadcast:

1. An ump texted Girardi saying the reason Pierzynski never got a concussion was there was nothing to concuss

2. Girardi said Steinbrenner complained about him dropping foul tips and wanted them to practice catching them

Otherwise it's been a garbage dump.
I like Adam Dunn's text to Pierz around the 4th saying he had to turn the game off because Cole had already struck him out 3 times while he was watching from the couch.

77
Maybe it's a residual stink left over from his Mariner days but I don't care for Mike Zunino.

I think in a 5 game series Miley is on the roster along with Urquidy. Miley starts with a short leash. Sometimes when you have a “new season” (post-season) it can be a mental reset.

Earlier in week it was that he would work a game, day off, then back to back games, just as if he had been on rehab assignment in the minors. But he was pulled after an inning ending strikeout swinging in the 6th. Hinch said pregame he might pull him early since he was playing back to back games. But him not being in the lineup today is concerning that he either tweaked something or isn’t ready. Who knows? Maybe he just got Yuli’s stomach illness.

Wait, what's this about Yuli's stomach?

Large predatory fish (tuna, swordfish, shark, etc) are fine to eat, but should be eaten in moderation. Toxins, particularly metals, bioaccumulate and therefore at the highest levels in these type fish.

Oh yeah...when I said a "ton" I was mainly talking wild salmon, which is about twice a week.  Ahi is maybe twice a month.  I wish people, mainly the Chinese, would stop killing all the sharks for their fins.  The ocean ecosystem is getting all out of wack due to us overfishing the apex predators (bluefin tuna included).

Like Chuck said, I always used mullet as cut bait to catch redfish.  Then I went to the Tampa area and was really impressed by how good it was smoked, in that spread you're talking about.  I've always loved smoked mackrel/kingfish but had never had mullet.  Thumbs up.

Do who did what? I am in a plane heading to Munich. Yep

Altuve, Bregman and Correa homered in the first, none were cheap, Diaz missed his by about 2 inches in LCF, Reddick followed his 2B with an RBI single to LCF.  James/Pressly!!!/Harris/Osuna went 4 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 7 K

Have a great trip!

Magic number is 1, Oak is stomping the Rangers early, so maybe they get to clinch it at home tomorrow.  1.5 up on the Yanks for AL home field.

I not only prefer salt water fish, I prefer fresh cold water fish as well. I eat a lot of Salmon. Prefer wild caught Pacific salmon. Also like Steelhead Cod and Halibut. That's not to say I don't like freshwater or warm water fish, just prefer the fish caught in colder waters. Don't care much for the reconstituted dried cod dishes that are popular in Portugal and other places.
Same, I eat a ton of salmon and yellowtail tuna.  I make exceptions to my cold-water fish preference for Gulf flounder, redfish, dorado/mahi mahi/dolfin and red snapper.

I'll basically eat anything but farmed fish.

Thanks. I don't cook catfish very often. When I do I tend I just to cook what ever I just caught. To me they all taste pretty good but I hate the mess deep frying at home makes. Also there is a very good catfish restaurant, Clear Springs, nearby.
You can always just skin them and fillet them, pan fry or grill or bake or whatever (Pontchartrain sauce!).  Blues are good to fry, yellows are too tasty to fry.

Catfish and largemouth bass. The catfish I catch are usually less than 3 pounds (1.3 Kg), I've caught as big as 17 (7.7 Kg). They are good eating when fried but I usually just allow them to go gently back in the water.
Yep, keep the yellows, throw back the channels and blues

It is not Reddick v Tucker. Reddick wins that every time.

May be Reddick v Toro. I assume Straw will be in?

I don't know what it is, all I know is that some of the bench players are trying to make the decisions difficult, same in the bullpen, and it's a good thing.

eta: and they've made tough decisions before re: Fiers, McHugh, Rondon...but not so much on the position player side of things

Don’t forget Pro Bowler Brandon Brooks.

These are the GOOD players they let walk for no reason. We’re not even discussing the terrible picks they’ve made on OL over the last five years or so.

Brown and Brooks left solely because they hated O'Brien.

I'll just take this opportunity to point out that the Texans this week signed center Nick Martin to an extension placing him among the top three paid at the position league wide.

Last year, PFF graded him fifth. Fifth in the league?! No. Fifth in the division. A division of four teams.
Texans let Ben Jones walk a few years ago, only to draft his lesser replacement in the 2nd? round and then pay him more.

Just break in and go get some.  I'm sure a couple of the TZ denizens will help you out.

Not taunting or bragging, just in awe.  Last 2 games:

36 runs on 39 hits vs. 1 run on 4 hits

9 BB, 10 Ks vs 1 BB, 27 Ks

46 baserunners vs 5

21 XBH vs 2

Over 9 innings b/t Sunday and Monday, the Stros outscored 26 of 32 NFL teams.

Roark has a been a really good pickup for the A's.  Miley needs to bring his A-game.

Chandler Rome tweets:

The Astros are targeting this weekend in Kansas City for Brad Peacock to throw off the mound for the first time.

Meanwhile, Collin McHugh is still not throwing. "That's a little bit of bad news," A.J. Hinch said. "We would have hoped he was a little further along."

A.J. Hinch said it is possible that Carlos Correa will "factor into" Triple-A Round Rock's playoff series that begins on Friday. Correa is "building endurance" and continuing his baseball activities.

Yuli Gurriel said he ran at 85 percent today. A.J. Hinch hit him some ground balls during pregame warmups. Hinch said Gurriel will repeat that pregame routine tomorrow and the team will “see how he fits” into this series against the A’s

Lance McCullers Jr. is throwing off a mound today for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery. He'll only get about halfway up the slope and will likely throw only fastballs.

Most of this discussion ignores the underlying  mental illnesses that accompany the majority of addictions. People will self-medicate when necessary, especially when the alternative is bipolar episodes or severe anxiety etc. I’m not sure what the solution is.

Wish I did, it’d be nice to see my sister again.

This is why addiction and mental health treatment is vastly superior to incarceration wrt addiction relapse and related crime recidivism.

WRT the Dutch and other countries, a lot of what they do is not "free heroin for everybody", it's methodone and clean needles distributed by their national network of doctors.  Only the hardcore addicts, who will never quit, get enough actual drugs to keep them on a level, cuts down on property crime and robbery/assault and most of them can actually function and hold down menial to basic jobs.  Or so I've read, it's been a bit since I've really looked at the non-penal solutions that have been tried in other countries.

With the season winding down, Osuna has not preformed as well as I had hoped he would but he is still one of the better closers in the league. A homer on a 0-2 pitch is always a shitty thing but it happens all the time. Verlander gave up one in his penultimate start.

Reddick's insistence on trying to pull everything disgusts me. There was no one on the left side of the infield and strike two, which he took, was the perfect pitch to slap into left field. Instead he swings as hard as he can at everything, trying to hit the ball into the right field bleachers. Baseball in 2019.

He was so, so good at that the first couple of months of the season and has completely gone away from that approach.

It's basically a stronger version of oxycontin.  People build up a tolerance to the weaker stuff and search out stronger alternatives, typically they end up as heroin junkies.  Illegal shipments from China account for most of the non-medical use/abuse in the US.

His urinalysis also showed oxymorphone, which is serious shit given to, say, end-stage cancer patients.  This wasn't a one-time mistake.

Got this from an MD acquaintance of mine:

Oxymorphone, while prescribed for SEVERE pain (Opana) is also the result of oxycodone having been metabolized by the liver. Unfortunately the presence of both oxymorphone and fentanyl would point to the possibility he was given fake oxycodone from someone. There are fentanyl laced oxycodone pills circulating around. If users are not careful and take 30mg blue oxycodone pills that are obtained from something other than a licensed pharmacy they are running the risk of getting fentanyl laced oxycodone pills. Fentanyl is extraordinarily strong. So strong it is prescribed in MICROgrams instead of milligrams like other pain medicines. I feel for his family. They have more questions than answers now.

Alvarez then drives one to the LCF wall, caught against the scoreboard, but for reasons I’m not even sure he can explain, Altuve is already halfway to third and is doubled off first easily.

I don't know, but the signs certainly point that way.  It's also possible he didn't know what he was taking, there's a lot of shady shit on the black market, counterfeits, intentional mislabeling, etc....However, the fact that the oxymorphone was in his urine but not in his blood, per the ME report, means it was not taken the night he died.

So I know next to nothing about fentanyl or the drug culture in general.  Why is it found in these pills in the first place?  Do bad actors put it in the pills specifically for the reason of harming/killing people, or it is because the drug can have other desirable effects when combined with oxy?

Texans would have received a 3rd round comp pick for simply letting Clowney walk.  Now if Seattle doesn't re-sign him, they essentially get the pick they traded back.  One of the players, former Browns bust Barkevious Mingo, has been so bad in camp and preseason games that he was most likely going to be cut.

I may have seen that invoked a time or two, but it's pretty obscure.  Obviously that was not the case with McHugh last night, as the Astros were already behind, and he did not give up a run, even though his appearance was brief.  He was rightly the "pitcher of record" when the Astros took the lead for good.
Doesn't the first paragraph say it's up to the scorer since Miley didn't go 5?

284
Game Zone 2019 / Re: Astros @ Blue Jays August 30, 2019
« on: August 31, 2019, 09:31:39 am »
From mlb.com:

A pitcher receives a win when he is the pitcher of record when his team takes the lead for good -- with a couple rare exceptions. First, a starting pitcher must pitch at least five innings (in a traditional game of nine innings or longer) to qualify for the win. If he does not, the official scorer awards the win to the most effective relief pitcher.

There is also a rarely used clause where an official scorer can deem a relief pitcher's appearance "brief and ineffective." (For example, if a reliever relinquished a one-run lead by allowing three runs, but was still in line for a win after his team scored four runs in the following inning -- that may qualify.) If that's the case, the scorer can award the win to a pitcher who followed that "brief and ineffective" pitcher. Which relief pitcher earns the win specifically is also up to the judgment of the official scorer.

I don't think I've ever seen the 2nd paragraph come into play, didn't know that possibility existed actually.

My wife had this question earlier tonight, and I don't know the answer: what's the actual definition of one runner passing another? Can they leapfrog one another between the bases as long as they cross the next base (or home plate) in the proper order?

Could be wrong as usual, but I believe the runner that passes the runner, even for a step or two, is out.  No idea what happens to the trailing runner, as far as what base he is awarded.

Every club evaluates prospects differently, and I know there's no guarantee of future success, but how can it hurt if the ones we've traded away are actually successful?

The main problem I have with KE is that he just doesn't shut up. He blabbers on about mostly unimportant details and stats, and then ends up either stepping on himself when something exciting happens or stepping on Blum when he's trying to wrangle KE back in.

With him and Stanton, they at least have a decent working understanding of each other, but KE's voice and pace on the studio broadcast is even more grating than his PBP voice. I tend to keep the remote handy when half innings end so I can quickly mute out if they're kicking it back to the studio.

Blum is so good at color, he makes Kalas better.  I really like that duo.

No, I haven't tried that.

Yellow cat bait, they don't eat dead stuff (predators not scavengers), but you can catch anything on them too.  Get a perch trap and catch them in the river or in any stock tank you have access to.  Hook them through the tail end on a throw line or limb line or trot line or fishing pole.

I have been playing around with lineups. Catcher and Reddick/Marisnick at the bottom are set. What do y’all think about this:

Springer
Altuve
Yordan
Bregman
Brantley
Correa
Gurriel
Chirinos/Maldonado
Reddick/Marisnick
This is a great problem to have, you could do the top 7 in any number of ways.

Is he still trying to take the outside pitch to LF, or pullhappy?  I do recall him grounding into the shift more often recently.

His ability to go with the pitch for such a young guy was one of the most impressive things I noticed this Spring and beyond.

I'm not a big fan of drive-throughs in general. There is a five times better chance they will fuck up your order going through the drive-through compared to walking up to the counter to order. Even Whataburger. And it's always to your disadvantage. You always get shorted, you never get extra food...

My first thought on the just missing pitches is it's an adjustment to the velocity and movement of big league pitchers.  Everything is just a little quicker, pitches move just a little bit more than down even in AAA.  That it's essentially a timing issue that will get better as it becomes more and more routine.  I haven't noticed anything in his mechanics that says "wow, he needs to fix that", a la Jason Lane, but I'm not a hitting coach either.  They have hours of film on him now, so if it's an issue, hopefully they're working on it with him.

Just me, or has Yordan started chasing high (out of the zone high) fastballs more than he was early and in AAA?

I cannot abide Popeye's.  In fact, I find it particularly distasteful.  If I want fried chicken, it's Frenchy's or nothing.  On the other hand, I love CFA's chicken sammich.  And their waffle fries...I'm all about the surface area to mass ratio.

CFA spicy deluxe is a great cheap sammich.  Only problem with their fries is if you get them to go they turn soggy in the box within about 3 blocks of the drive thru.

It depends what you are looking for.  National Harbor is shiny and new with modern amenities such as an MGM Grand hotel and casino, a London-esque Ferris wheel, medium and high-end chain eateries, a big resort, outlets, etc...  Old Town(e) is 350 years old, replete with centuries old brick buildings, brick sidewalks, cobblestone streets, all modernized into nice restaurants, boutique B&B's and historical restorations of the revolutionary and civil war periods.  So, it's a personal preference thing and you can't go wrong either way.

The first sounds like something Tilman Fertitta built, I'm much more in tune with the 2nd.  Thanks.

Was watching the White Sox / A's today and they showed that the top five best ERAs among AL starters since April 26th are Cole, Morton, Fiers, Verlander, Miley.

What's the deal with Fiers? Seems Oakland fixed him as much as we fixed those other guys.

If Fiers hadn't had a godawful first month or so, and pitched like he has all year, all year, he would legitimately be in the Cy Young conversation.

I have no idea what happened (i.e. did they tell him to change anything?), but I'm happy for the guy.  He pitched his ass off for about 2 months in '17 and really saved the pitching staff.

We are up to date on whatever is on the radio daily.

Luhnow and Hinch want a lefty in the pen. Both have said so. If they do not get one, Harris, Devo, and Pressly will have to do. As DKR once said, “Old Ugly is better than Old Nothing.”

I always liked "I try not to make the same mistakes today that I made yesterday."

I understand this.  Hence my question.  What is the value of a lefty reliever when we already have good relievers that can plat to both lefty and righty splits?  I'm just trying to noodle through the rationale that would make a lefty reliever a priority here.
Good lefty relievers can get righties out too.

Jake Kaplan just tweeted that tonight will likely be the last rehab game for Joe Smith meaning he may return as soon as Thursday or Friday.

Astros will need to make a 25-man and 40-man roster move to make that happen.

The 40-man should be Martin to the 60-day.

As far as the 25-man... they currently have 12 pitchers and are about to play 14 straight days, which usually means 13 pitchers.

It should be either Sneed or Urquidy if they stay at 12 and I guess Myles Straw if they go to 13?

Also have Peacock coming back soon as well. Gonna be interesting to see what they do over the next week with the roster, assuming no trade happens of course.

Does moving Martin to the 60-day have any service time implications?

He had some choice words for MLB about the baseballs too:  https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/27149029/verlander-mlb-juicing-balls-more-offense

"It's a f---ing joke," said Verlander, an eight-time All-Star who is starting his second All-Star Game on Tuesday. "Major League Baseball's turning this game into a joke. They own Rawlings, and you've got Manfred up here saying it might be the way they center the pill. They own the f---ing company. If any other $40 billion company bought out a $400 million company and the product changed dramatically, it's not a guess as to what happened. We all know what happened. Manfred the first time he came in, what'd he say? He said we want more offense. All of a sudden he comes in, the balls are juiced? It's not coincidence. We're not idiots."

Fucking idiot Rangers' announcers. Talking about how they've weathered their 21-games-in-20-days stretch, and how they've gone through most of it "without their best player, arguably the best player in the American League." Yes, they're talking about Joey "Windmill" Gallo. He's not even the best player on their team (that would be Mazara), much less the American League.

They're crazy about the AL, but they're not wrong about the team.  He's been shockingly good at the plate and in CF this year.  7th in the AL in WAR.  No idea what got into him.

Only caught the end while driving home, but Altuve had a sun/sky aided triple early to go with a couple of Ks.

The 9th inning was a mess.  Trailing 3-2, DeGoti gets HBP, Altuve walks (booth was saying he took a 2-0 pitch that should have been drilled).  Reyes took a 2-1 pitch that should have been drilled, ended up K'ing.  Tucker K's feebly.  Taylor takes a pitch or 2 down the middle but ends up walking to load the bases, Ferguson who had a couple of triples and a single taps out to the mound on the first pitch.

They left Altuve in to run in the 9th which has to be a good sign.
