Beer and Queso / McLane Stadium

At least some of the proceeds of the Astros sale windfall went to a good cause...  LINK

(Okay folks, there is your hanging curveball. Do with it what you will...).

Beer and Queso / Boot store rec
« on: December 26, 2013, 12:23:35 am »
I need to retire a couple of pair of cowboy boots (a Lucchese and Tony Lama), and wanted to pick up a couple of replacements before I leave town late Thursday afternoon. Anyone have a rec on the north side (Conroe, Woodlands, Spring/1960) of boot stores with decent prices / sales going on / good selection? Thanks!

Beer and Queso / Finally (and Happy Thanksgiving)

They now sell Shiner in Portland!  Picked up a case last night, and my Texans-living-in-Portland buddies and I are going to enjoy every last one of them tomorrow!!!

And since I won't be hanging around these parts tomorrow allow me to wish y'all a Happy Thanksgiving in advance!  Be safe, be blessed, and have fun!

Talk Zone / Astros among front runners for Abreu
« on: October 16, 2013, 03:16:39 pm »
So sayeth Buster anyway... Twitter LINK

Bidding on Cuba defector Jose Abreu is expected to be for a $70 million deal, sources say. White Sox,Astros, Rangers viewed as frontrunners.

More on Cuban defector Jose Dariel Abreu via this ESPN LINK:

"He has monstrous power," said a scout who began following Abreu at the 2009 IBAF World Cup.*** One talent evaluator said Abreu could step into a big league lineup tomorrow and hit .260 with 25 home runs. That's not far from what Cespedes is doing in Oakland this season. Another expressed concern that Abreu looks "confused" against breaking balls and thought he could benefit from a little seasoning in the upper minors. Once Abreu gets the hang of major league pitching, the consensus is that he has the strength to hit 30 homers by accident.

Talk Zone / Call for Papers: 2014 The National Pastime
« on: October 08, 2013, 03:56:27 pm »
Seems there are a lot of OWA'ers stories that would make for good submissions/reads here: Call for Papers: 2014 The National Pastime

To coincide with the convention, the summer 2014 issue of The National Pastime will focus on Houston-area baseball. In particular, we will be focusing on 1962-present to avoid overlap with the special book on pre-Astros baseball that the Houston chapter is concurrently producing. We expect most of the articles will center on the Astros, but we are open to other topics that fit the time frame (Women's baseball? Little league? Fan studies? College baseball? You tell us.) Articles may be historical, biographical, or analytical, but please avoid personal narrative.***

The Bus Ride Discussion Forum / End of Season Top Prospects Lists
« on: October 01, 2013, 01:57:22 pm »
Sickels posted his Top 75 Prospects: End of Season Update (h/t to Astros County)

The Astros on this list are as follows (link provides commentary):

#6: Carlos Correa
#9: George Springer
#20: Mark Appel
#37: Mike Foltynewicz
#43: Lance McCullers, Jr
#73: Jon Singleton
Honorable Mentions: Delino DeShields, Jr, and Rio Ruiz

Good to see someone finally including Springer in their Top 10.  As for Singleton at #73, Sickels has been fairly consistent on ranking Singleton below (or well below) most of the other prospect folks.

And to add, though I usually don't point people to readers comments, I think the "Springer-detractors seem to misuse age relative to level" comment is worth a look (and Sickels seems to have given his approval to it as well).

Talk Zone / CSN Bankruptcy

Here ya go... LINK

Affiliates of Comcast/NBC Universal filed an involuntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition Friday in Houston on behalf of the struggling Comcast SportsNet Houston regional sports network that it owns along with the Rockets and Astros.  The action apparently came as a surprise to the Astros...

Talk Zone / 1st round of callups tba tonight!
« on: August 31, 2013, 03:25:41 pm »
Per McTaggart:

“@brianmctaggart: Astros will announce first round of September call-ups after tonight's game.”

Yep, I am not to be trusted when it comes to meeting OWA posting deadlines (soft as they may be)... In any event, my apologies.

In any event, here ya go: HOU vs. SEA series preview.

Talk Zone / Last day to Vote Springer for MiLB POY
« on: August 21, 2013, 05:22:07 pm »
The USA Today MiLB Player of the Year voting closes today. Springer had a 10ish% lead on Archie Bradley yesterday, but its down to 2% or so currently. So... If you're so inclined... Go cast a few votes for Springer.  It'd be a shame to see a kid approaching 40/40 not get that honor. Voting LINK

Talk Zone / Stassi up
« on: August 20, 2013, 11:44:49 am »
A lot of rumblings on Twitter last night that Stassi was getting called up. McTaggart confirmed the rumor today, and notes that it indicates Corporan is probably going on the DL for potential concussion related issues.

Talk Zone / Cash Grab?
« on: August 14, 2013, 12:40:36 pm »
Earlier it was Wright for cash considerations, now it is Blackley. Hmmmm.

#Astros trade LHP Travis Blackley to the #Rangers for PTBNL and cash consideration.”

Appears to be some discrepancy on Astros transaction: There is no PTBNL going from Rangers to Houston in deal.”

Read (yet another) GBB masterpiece HERE.

Heras is 23, and seems to be a legitimate prospect (rather than simply a roster filler). TCB has a short write-up on him, with some links worth checking out HERE.
