Wasn't there a rumor he was porking Moyes' daughter?

Yep, and apparently everyone is in on signing him on loan.

Didn't expect it'd be quite this bad.  The gulf in ability is clear and cavernous.

Bank the money and be better placed next time up.

At least your owner hasn't shit on the gaffer in a very public way when your team was doing just fine, throwing you into a tailspin and possibly back down to the championship....

Fucking Malaysian God-complex owner.

This implies that you are currently *not* useless on Sunday afternoons.  We haven't heard your wife's opinion on that yet.

Not AS useless now as I will be this weekend...

I think I'll just spend all day Saturday trying to explain how a single player is worth $120 million.

Never was, never has been against the rules, AFAIK.  You're not allowed to kick the ball out of a goalie's hand(s), nor are you allowed to play the ball when the goalie has two hands on it.  What that guy did violated neither rule.

And then there's the old "Hide Behind the Goalie and Steal the Ball" ploy.

Love that one!  There really is nothing worse than own goals or taken advantage of goalies.

Matt, honestly, if Vincent Tan's waist ban near his shoulders didn't sell you on him, his terrible rendition of the ayatollah after the match should have.

Oops, forgot to offer my congrats on the big win this weekend!  I know I should be rooting for Khaleesi to go down in flames (to take one of the three trapdoor spots), but I feel more of a kindred spirit there than with other relegation contenders.  Fuck Hull.

Just bank the three unexpected points, and carry on.

Thanks Limey.  I haven't started rooting against anyone, except Swansea.  I'm all for the big dogs getting knocked off.  The mid and bottom of the table has become significantly more competitive in the last few years with more money pouring into the EPL, it's going to be quite a struggle for all of us.

Availability is awesome.  However, I just found out that Palace are, apparently, targeting Joey Barton as a transfer window signing.  This makes me very, very unhappy.

Even Joey Barton's mother thinks Joey Barton is a dbag.

Cardiff play Everton at home this weekend, I think this will be a good test of what to expect for the season.  The concern is for a big let down after the massive victory over Man City, but having watched  Malky Mackay lead Cardiff for the last two years, I don't think he'd allow a let down.

Ah yes very good point.

Crazy 2nd weekend for Cardiff.  I have to say, I've watched more EPL in the first two weeks than I did most of last year, mostly bc of CCFC, but also the availability on TV.

I'm very happy to see other relegation rivals having shit days.  Palace sitting 12th on goal difference right now.

Cardiff looked overwhelmed by west ham which frightens me bc they are a mid table team who totally out classed us.  I'm hoping it was more a poor performance due to being ill prepared for the "bright lights" of the EPL and less a testament of the teams quality.  It's going to be a nerve wracking season hoping for enough points to finish 17th.

Palace reverting to its chronic (literally) problem of shipping late goals.  THey've had the lead in the last 4 games, and come away with 4 points out of 12.  Cardiff are rolling.  Never mind how pretty it is, getting out of the Championship is MMA compared to the Premiership's dressage.

We both made it to the big leagues!  Congrats!

Beer and Queso / Re: EPL on NBC in 2013

Cardiff hasn't been winning pretty, but they have positioned themselves really well for the last half of the season.  A couple of quality signings during the Jan transfer window could help seal the deal.  Palace is right there as well.

14
Beer and Queso / Re: EPL on NBC in 2013

...and just like that Cardiff's superior goal difference all-but disappears, while Palace rocket to the top of the table with yet another emphatic victory.

Terrible showing against a weak side by Cardiff.  Their away form has been shocking so far.

Palace now one point off the top, and a new - highly rated - manager installed.

This is getting fun!

Congrats, this is going to be a hell of a season.  I'm still not sure if Malky Mackay is up to the task of leading a team to the promised land.

That would be the same Cardiff that's already lost to Crystal Palace once already this season?

Spurs are the only other acceptable alternative London Premiership team option.

Table topping Cardiff w the best goal differential, yeah.
The championship has some real quality this year, a lot of depth at the top of the table.

Every game available live somewhere on an NBC outlet.  Link.

Now all I need is for Crystal Palace to make it back up (currently sitting 4th in the Championship, unbeaten in 11 games, having just beaten the league leaders on the road last weekend, knocking them off the top).  So far, the lack of a manager doesn't seem to be slowing us down.

There's only 2 spots left for promotion, my Cardiff City boys have one of the automatic spots locked up.  I've chosen Tottenham to follow till the bluebirds are promoted.

Happ is keeping the ball down tonight a lot better than he has. That's what he needs to do. Throwing strike one would help.

The 1st got off to a bad start when he misplayed a poor leadoff bunt attempt.  He wasn't given an error, but it was an eminently makable play.  If he gets the leadoff guy out, Jones never gets to bat...

He got to that bunt too quickly, any normal pitcher and Downs picks up the ball and makes the play.

It sounded like some sort of weird play, but I'm listening to Milo.  So anything is possible.

He was sent on a ball of the wall which bounced 5 feet off the wall and was quickly picked up and fired in.  Good throws and a good job of blocking the plate led to Hunter getting thrown out.

Jordan's curveball is much better than advertised, nice sharp break, and he controls it well.  He had a rough 1st inning, missed his spot on a fastball, but since then, he's been money.  Quick worker with good control, gotta love it.

I like Eno, myself.  I'd be thinking of something off of Before and After Science, though.

Some people will tell you Eno/Lanois messed up U2's sound.  Steve Lillywhite acolytes, I guess.  And, come to think of it, I personally prefer the first three Lillywhite-produced LPs to anything/everything that came after.  By far.

But then, who cares?  It worked out all right for them.  Besides, the band brought in Eno because they wanted to go that direction, anyway.

Good points. It's too bad more clubs aren't willing to do prospect-for-prospect trades. With Wallace at 1B now, it would seem there will be no place for Clemens, even if he does somehow cut down on the K's and continue to put up the big power numbers. And now Martinez might fall into the same category. Perhaps Wade can trade them, down the line, for guys who better fit the Astros' needs, but it seems like most clubs aren't willing to trade away talented-but-blocked minor leaguers for the same.

The Matt Garza/Delmon Young trade being one of the few exceptions, which has worked out for both sides.

That's 12.  I can't tell if JackAstro wants to play, but if he does he's 13.

I'd say Froback gets next dibs because he's been embarrassed by his feeble mental ability played before.  A few others wanted in too, but I don't want to go higher than 14 teams unless somebody has a good idea on how to do it.  I'm going to eliminate one or two roster spots this year also so that we don't have to pick up as many dregs to fill out our teams.

Then they went immediately into the "never had to play in pressure" bullshit and how much easier it is to hit in the Yankees lineup and then I kind of threw up or something and muted it.

The thing that continually amazes me about world class football is the quality of the 1st touches.  Especially the English side in this game, no matter what kind of ball is sent their way, a high lob, a line drive, a bouncing ball, they are able to control the ball amazingly well.  That's the big difference between US soccer and the world class football played in Europe, players just don't have nearly the skill, manifested by weak 1st touches in comparison.

Absolutely not.  Bradley, and his bald head are clearly between the defender and the goal.  I'm not sure how you can possibly see it any other way.

Apparently this was not the call anyway.

If the defenders penis is 16 inches long and goes from behind the player, through his legs, and ends in front of the player, the player is on side.  But this is a moot point, the flag wasn't up on the sideline.

It's worse than you think.  This is what happened immediately after the re-start.  This was in the 80's, so lopping off a leg would've brought only a yellow.  To be honest, I would've taken a red to have crocked that cheating little fuck.  And I would've done it after the whistle.  If there are no rules...then it's 'Nam, right?

One of the greatest WC goals of all time.

So - correct me if I'm wrong,

Slovenia - 4 pts
USA - 2 pts
England - 1 pt
Algeria - 0 pts

Meaning the US needs England to lose/tie (1-1) to Slovenia to advance, assuming Algeria loses all three games.  Right?

US and England beat Algeria and England beats Slovenia, US advances.

I'm feeling sorry for the hosts right now.  Uruguay merited the win, but the ejection of the SA keeper and the ensuing penalty were both harsh to say the least.  I felt the whole time that SA were getting the rough end of the ref., but there was nothing really egregious (like that obvious thought-foul on Robert "Super Hands" Green) that impacted the result.

Good news is that, now, Mexico and France are in a true Thunderdome scenario.  I'm clearly neutral in that one so, all I'll say is: Viva México!

I'm rooting for France b/c Alkie is rooting for Mexico.

I lived in a AA town my entire childhood.   I then lived in a AAA town during college and a major league town since.

Dollar for dollar and total-experience, minor league baseball kicks major league baseball's ass.   It's not even close.

You sit right on the field, you meet the players, the food is better, you can take a family of 4 for less than $20, easy in, easy out, better promotions.   I'm done attending MLB games in person.   $400 to not see the game and eat shitty food in an uncomfortable chair?  Gosh, thanks, but no thanks.

Brooklyn and Staten Island (isn't that some sort of island prison?) have minor league teams in the NY-Penn league.

No he wasn't.  The ump signaled safe because Manzella dropped the ball.  The tag was right on the bag.  It beat the runner.  He's out, if Manzella hangs on to the ball.

Who cares, it had no effect on the game, except RoyO had to throw a couple extra pitches.  Now, explain what the fuck Q was swinging at with the first 2 pitches, before getting called out on strike 3 on the outside corner...

Lincecum's stuff looks absolutely filthy. Roy doesn't appear to be able to locate at all. Is that what it looks like on tv?

Other than a bus station crapper, I mean?

Sounds about right.  Roy isn't getting any swings and misses either, his stuff is no where near where it was 4 years ago.  The 2 seem fastball that used to get pounded into the ground and allowed Roy to get through innings quickly hasn't made an appearance either.

ESPN has finally turned their radar guns down.  Lincecum last year was getting 94-96 mph on the ESPN gun, now its pretty much 93-94 mph.  I'm inclined to believe the radar gun readings now vs previous years.  Oh, and Roy is 92-94 mph.

I'm surprised that Casey Daigle isn't on the team, but perhaps that is because he's more apt to be a Starter-In-Waiting in the minors than a long relief man and/or setup man at this point.  He threw the ball well this spring, however with the way both Paulino and Norris pitched this spring, it's better to make sure you have insurance in the minors and perhaps Daigle knows that with the fragility of the Houston starters, that is not out of the realm of possibility for him.

With Paulino's back spasm, maybe Casey starts the year in the rotation.  He has been pitching quite well.

Game Zone 2009 Archive / Re: diamondbacks at ASTROS 8.23.09
« on: August 23, 2009, 02:45:31 pm »
Pence is certainly not good at driving in runs, while not really a good option at 2 it may be where he can do the least damage. Since Matsui is in a funk, and Keppinger isn't allowed to play, not really many options to bat 2nd. Miggy does cost Bourn a lot of SB oppurtunities IMO.

well, when the lineup contains hitters best situated for the 1, 3, 4, 6, 6, 8, and 8 spots, there isn't much you can do with the lineup.  this is a typically poorly put together lineup by geoff blum.

267
Game Zone 2009 Archive / Re: diamondbacks at ASTROS 8.23.09
« on: August 23, 2009, 02:22:20 pm »
I don't like Tejada batting second either, not even when he was hitting .340. Pence might be a good option to bat behind Bourn considering the steady diet of outside breaking pitches in the dirt he receives . Should be a lot of good pitches for Bourn to run on. Pence also has a considerably higher OBP then Miggy as well as better speed. With Matsui batting .220 against RHP I don't even see why he is in there. Keppinger and Maysonet both seem like better options at this time.

I can't stand the fact that every time MBourn gets on base with Miggy behind him, he gets no opportunity to run b/c the first two pitches are a foul back and a ground out, what a waste.

First, let me say, I don't know why the fuck I read this shit, I guess its b/c I live so far from you and can't understand the world you now live in.

Second, when are you going to talk to the 93 y/o and tell us what he says?  If you don't do that, I'll make sure you lose access to SnS, and specifically the game zone.

Why'd you vacate to move to down there?

In one instance, a crewman died at sea under unclear circumstances.  As I recall, he was found at the bottom of a stairwell with a broken neck, and it was not known whether he'd fallen, or had been pushed.  The ship was four or five days out from port.  I don't know if the captain did it on his own authority, or was instructed to, but just to show someone higher up's insensitivity to the Muslim crew, they were instructed to take the dead guy, wrap him up, and put him in the meat locker for the rest of the trip, with the consumables.

Even as a non-Muslim, I thnk that would have bothered me.  On that ship, they damn near had a mutiny.

What would you have done?  Put the body out to sea?  The crewmen would have flipped their shit with that b/c you have to bury a Muslim body, and preferably within the first 24 hours or so after death.  So either way they would have been pissed.  The only thing to do would have been to ask them what they wanted to do with the body.

We used to laugh about it at the time, but I still sometimes wonder if there were a lot of guys trapped in the Muslim version of purgatory, if they have one, all because of our contretemps with their food orders.

I hope not.  That is a pretty heavy metaphysical debt, and I don't know that I have done enough on the positive side over the years to balance it out.

That's a top notch story.  Now, to ease your pain, as a muslim, I will tell you that if they were told it was Halal(ok for them to eat) then whether it was or wasn't doesn't matter, their intention was to eat Halal meat, they won't be punished for eating whatever meat you took them.  Also, meat of the Christians and Jews(that's the Quranic wording of it) is ok for Muslims to eat, many Muslims throughout the world take that to mean pretty much all meat is ok for them(this doesn't include the other white meat), some still prefer the meat be killed specifically according to Muslim tradition.
As for shellfish, according to stories of the Prophet Muhammad, he didn't like shellfish, that is where many people come up with the notion that shellfish are not ok to eat.  But, by religious practice, shellfish is fine to eat, there is no blood letting for fish so the whole steamed clams thing doesn't matter.

I think the shrimp was a reference to my Muslim post.  I am aware of no dietetic restrictions on papists (other than abstaining/fasting on Fridays, and before the Eucharist.)  If there are any, I am probably in trouble.

No restrictions on shellfish in the Muslim faith.  But no carniverous animals, that means aligators are out.

No "killer instinct?". The guy didn't get broken until the bitter end.  I don't watch tennis all that often, so I won't refute your argument but today that certainly wasn't the case.  He played the best ever.  And he played an amazing match.

The semifinal and final matches were the best I've ever seen Andy play.  If he can do this consistently, and by this, I mean serve well, continue hitting his backhand with depth and for winners, and volleying with competency, he will be a player everywhere but on clay.  Its a good day for American tennis fans, now if only Donald Young would live up to his junior billing.

I like his game, and I like the signing, but Ariza has not shown himself to be a good 3-point shooter at all. Artest is significantly better behind the arc.

Shot 20% and 27% the first 2 months of the season, after that he was a 34%-35% 3pt shooter, throw in his hot streak in the playoffs and now I believe he is a solid shooter.  That's the good thing about Ariza(vs. Artest), he can get better, Artest is now on the down side of his career.

362
Beer and Queso / Re: Artest to the Lakers?
« on: July 03, 2009, 02:28:30 pm »
I think the Rockets are better off with Ariza.

24 y/o swing man with length and very good defensive ability.  Shoots the 3 ball solidly, has improved over the course of the last few seasons, quite a lot actually.  Very good signing.  The contract, $5.8 or $6 million per year seems big, but not so large it can't be traded later.  I definitely trust Morey, but trusting him and thinking he can pull some big free agent next season (or trade tmac for a big time player-Bosh/Amare) are two totally different things.

Yeah, I'll tell you that dog food here is a fucking outrage, as are some 6 packs of beer ($14 for a 6er of local shit?  really?) but on the whole, eating out is about the same here as back in Houston.   We ate at a decent-enough French bistro tonight here that cost almost to the penny what we spent at Rabelais in Rice Village; which is totally reasonable.

Do not step into a grocery store, do not look at the cereal aisle, and do not check out the fruit and veggies.
A large box of cereal costs $7.00.  As stated by HH, cigarettes costs $10 a pack.  Everything is more expensive here.

The rent a grocery store pays is significantly higher in NY than it is in Texas, therefore the store passes on its increased overhead through the price of its food/goods.  The way I recoup my losses on groceries is through transportation.  I pay $81/month on a subway card, I don't pay for car insurance or gas.  There are no expenses for up keep on a car.  We rarely take taxis, but they definitely get costly if you take one more than 5 times a month.

Another thing in NYC that you won't find in Texas, an Uzbeki Jewish barber, I love mine(even though he can't do a damn thing about my thinning hair).

The cold sucks balls, but it really doens't snow much.  Maybe 2 snow storms a winter, neither of which is snow drift worthy.  The tar colored snow that emerges 3 days after a storm is the nastiest thing you'll see in the city.

Everyone.  Should live.  In NYC.  For a year.

My wife and I moved to Manhattan 2 years ago.  We have loved every fucking second of it.  The time we waited for 2 hours to get into a paella place in chelsea, we thought we were going to be unhappy with the new yorkness of it, then we had the food and fell in love with the city all over again.

The diversity in restaurants, the cheap eats, the sights, the sounds, the disgusting fucking smells, the subway, the homeless people, the noise, all of it, is part of the experience we've loved.

If my parents and my in-laws didn't live 3 miles apart in houston, we'd never even think about leaving ny.

If you want any restaurant recommendations, let me know, my wife spends 3 hours a week finding new places for us to eat, something that is necessary b/c we eat out 4-5 days a week.

"A logical trading partner for Tampa Bay would be the Astros because Jose Valverde is a year away from free agency, but that’s assuming Astros owner Drayton McLane would commence on a long-overdue rebuilding plan. Houston would probably ask for Wade Davis, Tampa Bay’s best pitching prospect after David Price."

Wade Davis, a 6'5'' RHP with a 92-93 mph fastball and good curveball.  Apparently location has been an issue for him, walks too many hitters.

Oh, I'm sure Valverde has to come back and show he's healthy, and has walked off his injury, in order for anyone to trade for him.

Two things (or maybe three):

1.  Yankees scored 2 in the 6th nd 2 in the 7th and afre threatening to tie the score.

2.  NEVER tempt the BBG's this way when talking about the Astros.

?3.?  Given that it is an AL team, I'll let the BBG offense slide this time.

my apologies.

Maybe the Yankees will file for bankruptcy and get some taxpayers' money to cover next year's payroll.

Even better, they recently petitioned the city of NY for $370 million in municiple bonds to help pay for the new stadium and its surrounding infrastructure, after receiving $900 million + for the stadium.
This was around the time they signed CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett.

Did Coop just leave Roy in to bat with 1st and 3rd, 2 outs, and then lift him before throwing a pitch in the following inning?

he must have hurt himself swinging the bat. there is no other explanation for it.

Here is a comparison of the Charlie Gehringer (one of the best 2nd baseman of the 30s) to Derek Jeter (not amongst the best shortstops of his era) life time batting:

AB     R     H    HR   RBI   BB     BA   OBP    SLG
Gehringer 8860   1774  2839  184  1427  1186  .320  .404    .480
Jeter     7541   1394  2391  195   949   764  .317  .388    .460

But Charlie Gehringer never made a throw from deep in the hole while jumping into the air, so, Jeter wins......

Yep.

Not good enough defensively and not fast enough.  But, you knew that.

if you have no range and don't get to any balls, you can never make an error, and your fielding percentage will be really really high, and that's all that matters.

This may be obvious, but I suggest you shop at Best Buy, etc., but BUY online!  While I expected there to be a difference, I was never aware how much until I bought my 60" SXRD a little over a year ago.  What was $5k + tax + delivery at BestBuy was $3900 + no tax + free delivery online!  Fortunately I had my cell phone with me at BestBuy and was literally minutes from buying the tv when I thought I'd take one quick look online to see how much I was throwing away for instant gratification (assumed it was maybe $100 or $200 at the most).  I was stunned.  Buy online!!

completely agree.  sony xbr2 42'' LCD, i got it for $2000 with a 3 year warranty and shipping included, at best buy it was $2700 + tax + extended warranty.

I like it. Bourn has a lot of upside, provides excellent defense at a crucial position and has the potential to be a good leadoff hitter that can wreck havoc on the basepaths. It could turn out to be a steal of a trade in a few years.

Also, if they can sign someone like Linebrink, the loss of Lidge would be lessened.

It's gonna be interesting to see what they do after this.

good deal.  save 5 million dollars, get a starting cf, and a good 3b prospect, could ask for anything more(except starting pitching...)

Petroleum engineering or geology.  Basically oil company bread and butter jobs.  There are way more jobs than there are people to fill them, and it's getting worse.  At my company, 70% of the workforce is over the age of 50.  They expect to lose nearly 50-60% of the current workforce to retirement in the next 10 years.  They have no idea where they're going to find replacements.

Dave Borkowski just blew this fucking game.

well, w/o the bruntlett error, wandy probably finishes the inning unscathed.

just wait till we visit sf on monday, care to guess how many runs we're gonna score against  Lowry, Lincecum, and Zito?

Our offense is just mind boggling

the leadoff man gets on base less than 30% of the time, the #3 hitter hasn't come to life yet, and the team can't find a consistent #5 hitter.  its quite understandable that the team's offense has been bad.
