But until now TNF had been shown on their own dime. No network was paying them for it.  They were making more money showing Sunday games than Thursday games. I guess that’s all changed now though.

They've partnered with one or more of the networks to put on the Thursday games since 2014. They still show them on the NFL Network but they're also shown on the network that has the rights. For a few years it was split between NBC and CBS but now it's Fox exclusively.

Well shows what I know. I thought they were still on NFL Network. Primetime games still suck as a fan though, Thursday night being the worst.

I agree...night games period.

Not really. I doubt they make any more money.

If the grift is that “no other teams are being investigated” then I expect the Astros punishment to be relatively light. They will not go down quietly.

And all this happened in .5 seconds? Yeah ok

And like the batter would be concentrating on the bullpen instead of the pitcher...what a load of horseshit.

They can kvetch all they want. Unless MLB does something stupid like vacating wins, etc, I'm not going to worry about it. I will brace for years of "Houston, we have a problem"-style smack but I can take it.

Not clicking. Cowherd knows less about baseball than any any given poster here.

The guy's a wanker. Any coherent point from him is an accident.

This is the first I’ve seen the video. He’s pissed. It makes more sense now. Shitty, but not the ‘fuck you to the Astros’ I thought it was.

McCullers will be back too. If he's able to return to form, that's three pretty good arms in the rotation already.

I was saving it for whatever offseason thread appeared but I’m excited about a healthy McCullers.

Article this morning said that Kendrick had not hit a homerun on a pitch in that location all year and that he normally pounds it into the ground.

The values that Footer is expressing is that she wants Osuna off the team. She only tweets it when he pitches and she is smart enough to know it associates the Astros with DV. The number of women who follow her who don't know about DV hotlines and are victims of violence are beyond microscopic; however, her twitter audience is mostly male baseball fans and she wants them to find Osuna unacceptable without her losing her job. Footer has also been around long enough to have a huge number of back channels and favors in the bank to organize a smear campaign against Taubman without having to do it herself.

I'm not saying that she did anything wrong, but she wasn't an innocent person minding her own business either as that person seems to want to portray her.

The Astros made this choice, not Footer. The team should be doing more of what she is doing.

Comments from pundits have less than nothing to do with what's going on on the field.    You can be superstitious all you want when you are playing a game.   But to suggest that comments from a pundit have any effect on what happens in a game is pathetically ignorant.

130
Rafter fucked Reddick.

131
That’s not a strike.

There's been a lot of those this series.

132
OK, at first i thought it would drop. Then I was blown away, and not in a Rebel Jew kind of way.

133

135
Jeebus, Yordan.

136

137
Hey y'all,

So some of the older posters on this site may remember that I was/am something of a musicologist. Well, I just wanted to share that since I last posted regularly on here, I have gotten my PHD in Musical Anthropology with an emphasis on American folk, blues, and roots musics. Anyway, one of the fascinating things I've discovered in the course of my studies is that the Bob Dylan song "Blowin' in the Wind" is actually about sucking dick.

You need a degree for that?

138
Yes!!

139
Uncle Mike!!

140
OK, fuck this guy.

141
So an amazing play by Reddick, what’s the first thing out of Joe Buck’s mouth?

I swear I’ve never listened to Buck before.  I don’t know how I’ve avoided it. This is a revelation.

How did you get through the 2017 postseason?

142
God bless Will Harris.

143
Reddick!! WOOOO!!

144
there's no reason for that, none whatsoever.

Unless you're gorvelling the NY schlong.

145

Thanks Ty...on a side-note although their "stadium" catches a lot of flack (and rightfully so) I did enjoy a game there with my FIL while on vacation with my family.  It was 2013 so you know I'm a die hard.  Although we got blanked 5-0 with 5 lousy hits (one from Altuve of course and one other by some guy named JD Martinez, not sure whatever happened to him) we did enjoy the Ted Williams museum, it was really well done.  Also, because the locals only show up for Yanks or Sox I was able to get tix dirt cheap just a few rows behind the Stros dugout and literally parked across the street and was inside and almost to our seats in less than a few minutes.  I kept looking around for Allen Funt...is this for real???

The Trop is far from ideal but it is Major League Baseball...for now. I get to see the Astros more now that they're in the AL but it also creates a conflict I haven't had to deal with until now...I like the Rays. I've lived here since '88 but I did my growing up in Galveston and college and young-adulting in San Antonio. The game my father and I attended was in Houston.

Props from Jim...I might not post again to maintain my John Paciorekian average (although I'm already breaking it as I type).

Just a little background on me, my folks started going to games at Colt 45 Stadium and I was hooked by age 6 and once it's in your blood stream, it never leaves.  My mom lived down the street from Dick Williams when he played for the AA Fort Worth Cats and knew him pretty well (I met him once and he signed my glove, IMO he should get more recognition as one of the top big league skippers of all time).  Of course it was somewhat bittersweet that we beat the Dodgers in 2017 for her.

I almost posted here after we won in 2017 but it was too emotional for me (my dad was battling stage 4 prostate cancer) but he was lucid throughout and getting to discuss every game with him during those playoffs will be a memory I'll cherish forever.  He passed 2 weeks later but was able to finally see the Stros win it all.

Anyway, love this site and the insights provided, especially during the game.

Very sorry to hear about your father's passing but what a lovely story. As a youth, I always went to games with my grandfather who lived in Houston. He passed when I was in college, shortly after the '80 NLCS. My father played and loves baseball but was much too busy when I was young to set time away for a ballgame. I went to my first game with my father in July 2017 on his 81st birthday. It was magical and I firmly believe we had a hand in the push to the championship. We spoke on the phone for 30-40 minutes after the last out. He sounded like a kid again.

I would definitely recommend getting some version of this, even if it's the 09 reissue.  I got mine a number of years ago, and I knew they were pretty rare and sought after, but I didn't pay in the hundreds for it.  You might try scouring the net and even local sources.  Sometimes libraries and other non-profits will have records they are liquidating for cheap.  I've gotten several that way.  And I have lots of reissues.  Nothing wrong with them IMO.  They're typically not as valuable and collectible, but I'm a listener, not a collector anyway.  I've never understood people who buy records and never take them out of the cellophane.  Yes, they are pristine.  And they sound as good as a rock in your driveway.

Yeah, I'm not really concerned about the collectibility, etc. I just want a good representation. The reviews on the remaster are good so I'll dive in.

Speaking of vinyl...there is also the famous concert at Massey Hall in Toronto in May of 1953.  It features "The Quintet" of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach.  The original release was a single LP titled Jazz at Massey Hall.  There was an extended 2-LP release in 1973 subtitled The Greatest Jazz Concert Ever, and it's widely regarded as just that.  I have the latter, an original pressing from 1973.  It's also one of my favorite records.

The story behind this concert is interesting too.  It took place at the same night as the highly anticipated heavyweight title rematch between Rocky Marciano and Jersey Joe Wolcott, and almost no one showed up to this concert.  In fact, the gate was so small, that the producers were unable to pay the musicians themselves at the time.  Gillespie said he eventually got paid many years later.

I've heard of this album but never looked into it. Original pressings seem to hover in the low hundreds. Would you recommend the ~$20 remaster from 2009?

238
So says MLB

240
Glasnow on short rest?  That's bold.

Ok bigger question, who goes for Houston?

241
Don’t think the Rays are starting one of their prized young arms on only three days of rest, especially when he missed four months of the season.  They might use Yonny Chirinos in a similar manner as they did Glasnow and Snell, or go with a complete bullpen game.

You’re probably right but in a do-or-die, a bullpen game is a tough proposition.

242
So who do the Rays have going tomorrow?

Has to be Glasnow.

243
James up.

I am wondering if the plan is to start Miley in Game 4 then flip to Urquidy if Miley starts to implode again.  And just hope that James, Rondon and Smith can fill the gaps in any pre-7th inning relief work that is necessary.

I could see that if it's 2-1 Astros, of course. Verlander on 3-days rest if it's elimination.

I'm still not over 1986, only because it was such a crotch-punch. 1980 either. I don't hate the Mets and Phillies anymore. They seem like faded antagonists of a different era. I'm sure I'd feel different if the Astros were still in the NL but for now, that hatred is reserved for more immediate foes.

I have made no effort to hide my bias in favor of Tucker getting his chance, but has most of his production, so far, been off AAA pitchers that are up for a look @ KC?  Looking forward to him facing more major league pitchers.

Which innings?  From the end of 8th inning until pretty much the end of the 12th inning, it was like the Astros fell asleep.  We caught up, now we don't have to do any more.  9 out of the 10 players struck out.  It was brutal to watch.  Then Guriel got a very generous walk (I guess Country Joe was making up for the other terrible calls) and Tucker got a big hit.  So the end of the 12th and the 13th innings were fun.  But unfortunately, there was the hour before that.

Which ones do you think?

Do people catch fish there or nearby ordinarily? I've never had any luck surf fishing. Well, except once when I was about 14 and surfing near the old Flagship Hotel with my brother and a couple of my cousins and I saw a hunk of Styrofoam floating attached to a stringer of 5 or 6 speckled trout that I was able to snag.

We used to catch specks and the occasional red from the beach out on the west end, around 13-mile road. Was a day-long kind of thing and typically mid-summer like Lefty mentioned.

Growing up in Corpus we had a small local business called Shep's Chicken Shack. Their fried chicken was awesome. To this day I haven't had anything better but you can't buy it outside of Corpus. At one time there must have been a Chicken Shack in Waco because I remember their signage off of the interstate.

We had 2 Shep's Little Chicken Shacks in Galveston as I was growing up. One on 23rd by O'Connell High School and one on 61st near S. I've never had fried anything as good as the stuff they made...all fried!! Chicken, livers, gizzards, shrimp, clams, even the biscuits were fried. I still dream of that place.

A Spin Clean does an ok job, but seriously...nothing comes close to the ultrasonic cleaning. It is by far THE best way to clean vinyl.  You should check it out.

Can you send me a link to the one you bought? I'll definitely check it out.

I have just a basic 6 liter cleaner from amazon. About $120. I just use a long screwdriver threw the hole, rest it on the cleaner, and turn them by hand. Rinse them with distilled water and set them on solo cups to air dry. They have fancy turning devices to do all of that for you, but they want absurd money for them. Turning by hand does the exact same thing. It’s more labor intensive, but something mindless to do while watching the game.

That's basically what the Spin-Clean is, a manual cleaner with microfiber brushes and rollers that you spin yourself. You can clean about 20 LPs with  a mix of distilled water and a capful of their cleaner until you need to change out the batch. I want to give my relatively small collection the once over, along with any new/used vinyl that comes in.

Today I was on an 80s kick. I bought:

Armed Forces - Elvis Costello
Phantoms - The Fixx
And finally found a decent original copy of U2’s The Unforgettable Fire, which I think is their masterpiece.

I also had quite a few others that needed cleaning. I use an ultrasonic cleaner. Best thing I’ve ever found.

I have the EC and U2 on vinyl. Which one did you get? The good ones I've seen are in the multiple-hundreds of dollars.

If you're gonna let him start the inning, you let him try to work around the walk.  Osuna just didn't get it done.

He missed badly on ball 4. If you leave him in you get what you get.

Talk Zone / Re: Les Expos du Tampa Bay?
« on: June 21, 2019, 11:25:38 am »
I really believe Sternberg and his buds think that Tampa Bay is a lost cause. The lease on the Trop is inching to a close and there doesn't seem to be any local interest in giving them anything in the way of government support for a new stadium in an area that has the best chance of working. As much as I love baseball, and the Rays, I think they are right.

Baseball got off on the wrong foot here to begin with and has been limping along for 20+ years. St. Pete ain't gonna work and the Rays seem uninterested in talking to the city. A new retractable-roof ballpark in downtown Tampa with public transportation that works might make the Rays a successful draw but that is a big gamble with their own money and I don't think they like the odds. The big tell for me is Jeff Vinik's yawning lack of interest in having the Rays be part of the redevelopment he is doing of the downtown Tampa channel district. Yes, he is a hockey owner but baseball would be a limited overlap and would create a year-round draw to his downtown development. But he's said no, and he owns the only undeveloped land left in downtown.

Like I said earlier in the thread, I think this split-city idea is just a ploy to either get things moving locally or prime the Montreal market for a move. I can see them waiting out the 9 years left on the lease, if they feel they have to, and making an unrestricted move elsewhere.

Talk Zone / Re: Les Expos du Tampa Bay?
« on: June 21, 2019, 10:57:07 am »
Evan Drellich is now with the Athletic.  He tweeted yesterday that the Rays believe they can go cheaper and build a roofless stadium in St. Pete if they can go to Montreal for the hottest summer months.

That makes sense because the hottest summer months in Tampa Bay are April, May, June, July, August and September.

Do you think that if they built an attractive stadium where the current stadium stands that would solve the attendance issues or is it simply a case of the stadium's being in St Petersburg rather than Tampa?

To quote Jules, "We'd have to be talking about one charming motherfucking pig."

I think the location is an issue, as do many who have analyzed the situation. My personal opinion is if they don't put it in Tampa/Hillsborough then they shouldn't even try. I think the Rays think this as well.

I know this board frowns on "lol" and "haha's" but

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Does anyone REALLY think this would work? If the Rays really do this then they will lose what little support they have now and likely won't get much support from Montreal by being "half in." You cannot be half in, either be all in and move to Montreal or be all out and suck it up in Tampa. This would be a lose/lose situation for everyone involved.

Chirinos walks
Diaz FO down the RF line, Meadows makes a nice sliding grab.
Marisnick takes four balls to move Chirinos to 2nd
Springer homers!!!!! Three run Springer Dinger!!!
Altuve GO to short.
Bregman FO to RF

Middle of 3
Astros 3   Rays 1

I'm thinking Snell regretted not going after Marisnick. Jake showed good patience and Snell thought he'd chase the slider. I'm sure he was thinking about that when he served up Springer's dinger.

Luhnow is saying Bregman deserves to be paid more, which is a sentiment I doubt anyone would dispute.

The fact that the CBA allows teams to underpay players like Bregman is why teams don't have to pay free agents a true free market price.

But this isn't new. Just because you possess something of value that you earned doesn't mean you're hurting the free market by not participating in it. The free market is correcting itself by removing the stupidity.

Bregman renewed at $640.5K

"I'm just disappointed and I feel like I outperformed that last year. I understand that it's a business, but I feel like good business would be wanting to make a player who performed at a high level on your team happy and want to feel like he wanted to be kept and feel like they wanted him to play here forever. I'm just disappointed it doesn't seem like the same amount of want."

Luhnow:

"The reason we went out of our way last year for Correa is he won Rookie of the Year [in 2015] and missed Super Two by one day, and we felt like we needed to make that up to him.  That was a special circumstance for a special player. Alex is a special player and we hope he's here for his entire career, and we're giving him the second-highest pre-arbitration earnings that we've ever given in history and one of the top 10 in MLB history."

"I know it's not satisfying because he's a great player and no player is ever satisfied the year before they reach arbitration with the amount the club gives them. That's just the nature of our industry right now. That's the world we operate in, and next year when he reaches arbitration, he's going to begin to get paid at the level he deserves."

They're both right and it does suck. I don't blame Bregman for being disappointed and I don't blame Luhnow for going by the book. I just hope it doesn't hinder extension talks, should it get to that.

Either that or all the teams secretly agreed to avoid competitive bidding for free agents.

NO COLLUSION!!

I thought it was the opposite of a Qualifying Offer.

I guess we'll just have to have him come back in and explain everything for us.

DQ = drama queen, aka Clemens. Ye Olde Funk and Wagner might have been of assistance in this instance.

I'm sure that if MM were not the one who came up with "Drama Queen," he certainly was around for his crowning and was only using the fast-food metaphors for comic effect.

Foul Balls Are The Pace-Of-Play Problem Nobody’s Talking About

I just came in here to post that. I sure as hell hope they don't do something stupid like limit the number of fouls per at-bat.

Oh trust me, I know that his base is as solid (and as dumb) as a rock.

You sell them short. Dumb is not what makes the base rock-solid.

I vowed never to pay for content years ago.

I don't understand this.

We did...

But that was before the fun police intervened.

The only handle I use. It's perfection.

I'll take that. That is even better.

Of course, your partner did poison the judge.

Failing to recognize the culpability of both parties is failing to understand the dynamics of politics and the history that got us to this point. You're the better dancer so you blame your dance partner for losing the dance contest.

More like "you're the better dancer so you blame your partner for poisoning the judges."

Shitting on the board doesn't make you win at chess but it sure ends the game.

Perhaps one's time is better spent reaching kids than arguing on social media.

I wonder what would make someone go out of their way to defend these youths for their actions, regardless of the snippet or angle or length of the video you chose to view. These are high school kids bussed to DC to take part in a political act, the March for Lives, sponsored by a private Catholic school. They chose to make political statements by wearing their MAGA hats, which are decidedly pro-Trump (spare me the fake wonderment about the baked-in symbolism) and then decided it was a good idea to mesh with an Indigenous People's March. What amount of youthful indiscretion would make anyone think this was a good idea if not for malicious intent? You really have to reach pretty far to think that what these kids did was just hijinks.

Oh, I know why some will reach those lengths. Because they can; they feel emboldened. Had these been kids from an inner-city public school peppered with ebony and shade, the overwhelming narrative from these same people would have been to crush and condemn. It's so transparent.

Maybe you're for Donald Trump. Maybe you're against abortion rights. Maybe you're Catholic. Maybe you just like being contrary. Defending the actions of these youths is dangerous and wrong and most people deep-down know this. If you honestly believe they were "just being kids" then I really don't know what to say. I suppose we get the society we deserve.

Machado is not a fit on this team and I seriously doubt the Astros have done any pursuing of him.

Jody Like a Melody still gives me the occasional goosebump, not ashamed to admit.

I wore that album out - along with Longhaired Redneck - my first couple of years in HS. I still spin them occasionally.

The shutdown is eroding Trump’s base.  In an NPR simple approval  poll, the difference between last month and this is:

-7% among Republicans
-6% among white men w/o college degree
-7% among white evangelicals
-9% among suburban men
-11% among white women w/o college

Pelosi's got him by the beans.
