I'm rarely accused of listening to "fun" music (or the band, .fun), but I think these guys are fun: Lake Street Dive - Bad Self-Portraits.
If you like Alabama Shakes give it a listen.

"You Go Down Smooth"
I went to the taping of the 40th anniversary of ACL show a few weeks back.  Lots of talent on stage that night but that big girl from Alabama Shakes stole the show--she is a force of nature.  Also, Gary Clark, Jr. tore it up.

I remember Mike Magnante recently for the Stros, can't think of anybody else local.
Magnante's screwball was explosive and sounded like a howitzer going off every time an opposing hitter launched one.

Actually, players from the northern part of the country are being forced into early retirement, while players from the southern part are joining the German practice squad.
Underrated post.

Beer and Queso / Re: Total Knee Replacement
« on: May 06, 2014, 04:20:38 pm »
My cousin had it done on one of his knees three-to-four years ago. He is my age. I don't know all the particulars, but apparently the surgery was botched in some way - he had a horrendous infection in the knee afterwards. They finally had to take the knee out. So he went about half a year with no fucking knee at all. The filled the void with some kind of antiobiotic cement, and put him in an assisted living facility for six months. This is a guy who is otherwise healthy as a horse and very physically active, or was. Now he is bitter and drinks too much.

I'd have to be in a lot of pain for a long time to even begin to think about a replacement.
Had spinal fusion done 12/12 for a "sure thing" L5/S1 correction.  Didn't work.  Not getting on a soap box about doctors but would not have had it done if had a second chance, given the pain and limitations since and would urge anyone else to really think long and hard about going under the knife for elective surgery.

My sources (Sammy alumni--"the Jewish house says our answers are all wrong") say that Mack will announce his resignation on Saturday ("wants Friday night banquet to be about the kids") and that Saban will be announced as his successor sometime on or before Monday.

They've never been wrong and have Yahweh on their side.

Some or all of these are true:

1. Mack is stepping down.  Or, not.
2. Saban is in Austin.
3. Saban's wife is in Austin.
4. Saban's wife and Mrs. Brown were seen together.
5. Saban asked to watch #4, after unbuttoning the top button of his button down and lighting a Pall Mall.
6. Joe Jamail took a long, luxurious dump and declared Longhorn faithful to be "Taliban schlong gorvellers."
7. Mack will be named, "Special Advisor to the President" after he steps down.
8. Mack will be allowed to wear a head set in his new role and be given a trident.
9. Saban will have a base of $10 million and numerous perks, including telling the LHN that he will ascent to a weekly show provided that it features a lead in of him masturbating into a Faberge egg cup.
10. Chip Brown is really a rhesus monkey named, "Bobo."

no, no, no! great, exciting game.
Thought it was a very entertaining game.  McCoy isn't Johnny U. but he seems to get going more and more as a game progresses.    I think some credit goes to the players and coaches at Texas for not quitting on the season when a lesser group would have--some leadership is going on somewhere.

Keanu In Speed.

Keanu in "Dracula."  In contrast, Gary Oldman ruled.  Further, Oldman's portrayal and mimicry of Oswald in the highly entertaining "JFK" was one of the best efforts ever done.  To digress further, would like to ask Tommy Lee Jones if getting his nipple bitten in the gay party scene was his career highlight.

Ripken was uninformative (as usual) during his recent stint on TBS during the NLDS, but not really annoying, except when he got cloyingly self-referential (about what else? The Streak!) I think Ernie Johnson and especially Ron Darling helped keep him mostly on-topic, or at least somewhere near it. Alone, or with his (FF) brother, Cal just meanders.

He was with the MLB Radio Inside Pitch crew on the NLCS pre-game show yesterday, and at one point Casey Stern asked him about playing Game Three in Dodger Stadium, after two tight opening contests at Busch III. Stern was obviously was looking for some insight from a former player about the ballparks and how they played, the similarities and differences, hitter's park or pitcher's playground, etc. Cal was clearly caught off guard, and ended up mumbling something about how the BFiBs were great fans, and knew when to cheer and stuff, but, oh boy, the Dodger fans were pretty energized for this series, too. Typical.

Ripken's voice is annoying to me, as well.  Not sure why, but I cannot stand to listen to him. The only person who comes close, on the radio anyway, is Todd Hollandsworth. His stammering, and long, unintelligible parenthetical forays, remind me more than anything of the Kevin Bacon character in Diner. Doesn't work too well on radio.

But, yeah ... I selfishly hope Ripken gets the job, and makes his brother his bench coach, or something. Maybe Hollandworth can be the hitting coach.
It's remarkable how few former players have really anything of substance to say or insight to offer.  Even more confounding are those recently retired from the game who seem to know nothing beyond the obvious--you just left the sport--is it too much to ask for something that sheds light?
