Jim is absolutely right about one thing - the garbage can beating is totally immaterial to anything at all. If the league can find concrete evidence that the Astros used technology to steal signs after the directive came down in September of 2017 or whenever it was, fine. If not, they should be told, very politely, to go fuck themselves.

I like how he had the Jeffrey Mier "home run" on the positive side of his postseason record seeing as how it should have been an out

That did not escape my notice, either.

There's someone on Twitter arguing vociferously that the person in question or at least the station in question pertains to the MLB replay system.

As is the new custom here I will refrain from linking to it.

Just from my personal observation, it seems like the more MLB implements technology, the better the umpiring on the field gets. Sure, sometimes it's bad, sometimes it's terrible, but across the board it seems to be getting incrementally better.

The NFL is most definitely going in the other direction. I used to be pretty happy with the officiating week to week, whether I was watching games I was invested in or not. This year in particular, the officiating is worse than it has ever been that I can remember. The more they implement technology, the worse it gets.

It's at the point where it's nearing NBA level bad, and that means unwatchably bad.

The scouts were directed to film signs being given from the from the dugout, not try to intercept the catcher's signs.

It's puzzling to me that there seems to be little appetite to read the articles yet an abundance of enthusiasm to complain about the details.

I have no idea whether a team's filming bench signs, especially during a game that their team is not involved in, is a violation of league rules. Again, this effort was meant to try to decipher bench signs and decidedly not a scheme to relay improperly gained information in real time to players. All I know is that according to the article the scouts considered it wholly inappropriate and wanted no part of it.

With respect to this last piece, if true, and it probably is since the Athletic seems to have been forwarded tons of emails and Slack channel threads from someone (I wonder who) (Mike Elias coughcough), the thing that strikes me is the naivete of the person making the ask.

I mean, come on, dude, have you never seen scouts at work at a game? Don't you know they all sit more or less in the same place and they all know each other and one or two of them MIGHT notice if someone was fucking training a camera on the opposing team's dugout? God damn these McKinsey guys are lost in the real world.

Quote
Scouts discussed sign stealing with the executive outside of email as well, on phone calls and in a group Slack channel. Multiple Astros scouts said they were appalled by the possibility they would be asked to use a camera — and said that some scouts indeed voiced as much to management. Another scout noted a generally confounded feeling amongst the group by the overall request.

This whole thing is bad and it's getting worse. And it will continue to get worse, I think.

This is what I mean by martyr complex. Literally none of what is being described is actually happening, despite many of you really, really wishing it would.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/mlb-commissioner-on-astros-scandal-we-will-find-out-how-far-up-in-the-organization-it-went-131204081.html

Quote
So, what might a potential punishment even look like? On the extreme end, some fans have wondered whether the league would make the Astros vacate their 2017 title, akin to how the NCAA has punished college athletic programs like Louisville last year. Or MLB could slap an asterisk on the Astros’ 2017 title in all the record books. It could suspend or even permanently ban executives like GM Jeff Luhnow, who has been at the center of tech-related baseball scandals before. On the lower end of the spectrum, it could fine the team or the individuals involved.

"Some fans have wondered" is quite some distance from "Commissioner Manfred said."

I'm looking forward to a bobblehead of Orbit beating the hell out of a trash can. Not sure if he's a righty or a lefty.

You'd think that with all that McKinsey brainpower it would occur to someone to rotate the trash can so that the dude could hit the side that usually rests against the wall or, who knows, maybe swap it out for one in the concourse every month or something.

In the video of the Gattis at bat on Jomboy, the catcher is clearly not hiding the changeup sign. I've no doubts it could be seen by either base coach or the dugout.

There are many different videos with many different Astros batters playing against many different teams where the beating can be heard.

If they're picking up signs in the dugout, why the fuck would they have some goon beating on a trash can in the hallway? They could just do first name, last name. Or whistle Dixie, you know, normal things.

Talk Zone / Re: More controversy
« on: November 15, 2019, 12:27:37 pm »
I don't have the same martyr complex about this that a lot of you do, and if the Astros or any other team used or uses technology to cheat, they should be punished. But this, allegedly from a fucking GM, is the sort of thing that debases the discussion drives me into a blind rage.

Quote
“They’ve been cheating, they still are cheating, and it’s time MLB puts a stop to it,’’ one National League GM said. “Come on, they won 60 games at home this year. Look at their numbers when guys are on base (MLB-best .282 average) since 2017. The banging of garbage cans and pipes (as a way to convey signs). The whistles. Everything.

When guys are on base?! It is totally legal for players to steal signs if they are on base, you fucking idiot.

One article today is quoting unidentified GMs as wanting the 2017 WS title vacated.

Where are you seeing this? I didn't look very hard, but neither could I find the video that shows banging in the game against the Yankees in April of this year.

Another thing that just occurred to me, someone absolutely has to use Bang a Gong as their walk-up music next year.

But the good news is, this just gives the Astros another way to fuck with other teams. You'll have guys on the bench doing the Bridge Over the River Kwai, some joker in the hallway going Keith Moon on a trash can, dudes in the bullpen lined up waving like human semaphore... Next season is shaping up to be a lot of fun, Cole or no Cole.

Talk Zone / Re: More controversy
« on: November 14, 2019, 03:55:59 pm »
I don't think so. I think there are two different methods being described here.

One, the Astros have a monitor in the hallway that carries the feed of a camera they have (hidden?) in centerfield somewhere. There's a guy with a bat watching the feed and whacking a trash can accordingly.

I think the bullpen catcher method is a totally different approach, and as plausible as I find the trash can conga, I don't see how this bullpen catcher business is supposed to work. For one thing, there are many, many facial closeups of batters throughout the game. I pay close attention to what they look at when the pitcher is on the mound (and before), and I have never seen anyone shoot glances out into right field, never mind regularly, never mind before literally every pitch.

So, lies are justified? You’ll have a great time with teen-aged children.

Others are welcome to feel differently, but to me, there is a wide difference between the sort of lies that AFiBD describes and the lies that were told in the wake of the Taubman incident. The Taubman thing got corrected, appropriate apologies were made and hopefully accepted, the book is closed on that unfortunate incident as far as I'm concerned.

I don't know that anyone is arguing that lying is justified, but if a pitcher whose shoulder is bothering him comes off the mound and tells the press, No, I felt great out there, well, I'm not ready to crucify him.

I have no great love for Beltran and no great love for the Mets, but his saying he knew nothing about it might mean just that he never asked for or received any of the information being offered. If it was happening, the whole team surely knew about it. But what are they supposed to say now? Yes, I knew, and I was scandalized! I mean, come on. These guys have surely all watched The First 48. Just keep quiet and there's only so much anyone can do.

Anyway, the banging noise is plainly audible to me through regular computer speakers, and clear as day if you wear headphones. The Astros were clearly using technology to steal signs in 2017. They were clearly not the only team to be doing so. I'm not sure what the statute of limitations is on something like that, and I don't know how useful it would be to litigate the misbehavior of any team from several seasons ago. I would hope that the league would just re-iterate its current policy regarding the use of technology to steal signs, and it might be useful to express what a minimum penalty for a violation might look like, loss of a first round pick, you know, whatever it might be.

My mom fucked up her shoulder one morning when she was moving chairs around for her Sunday school class. She had to have it operated on and they found a small cancerous tumor in her right lung looking a pre-op x-ray. She had recently just been declared cancer free the previous year from breast cancer. That was after a lot of chemo. Anyway the lung cancer was very early and they got it all. She has one kidbney, hell she's been operated on 20 some odd times in her life. She's tougher than most.

My mom's a Sunday school teacher, too. Maybe there's something to that.

Better to be lucky than...well, just better to be lucky.  👍

Yeah, you know, for years she'd been coughing like a homeless guy who lives under a bridge. She'd had a scan a few years before that came back fine. In her mind, there was no reason to keep looking. She though it was allergies. That's what everyone told her. She came to visit me a few years ago and her cough was so fucking annoying that I told her, Look, your doctors aren't doing shit about this. I need you to find someone who will. I don't know what's wrong with you, but something is wrong, figure it out. This shit is unbearable.

She found a doctor who took thirty seconds to think about it, scheduled another scan, the one that found the tumor, prescribed her some acid reflux medication, so we ended up getting rid of the cancer AND the fucking coughing two for one.

I'll admit, it is harder to find her in Target now, but these are the sacrifices we make.

One of the very rare cases where they found it in stage 1A, almost by accident. Treatment has been hell on earth, and there is a higher risk of relapse, but it’s a miracle she’s made it this far.

My mom had lung cancer a few years ago and everywhere we went they asked, How the hell did you catch it this early? Well, the answer is, both of her sons are assholes and got tired of her relentless coughing which turned out to have nothing to do with the cancer. Got a scan, saw the tumor, lopped it off, here we are.

I haven't spoken to my contempt for DC area sports fans, they are in sort of an unassuming manner some of the worst fans in the country. But I have enormous respect for the Nationals because they for some reason have managed to put together a team that plays really good defense. I commend Suzuki especially, but there are plenty of other guys that I'm getting tired of.

I appreciate the fact that he's a very technical sort of player. I've always been struck by his saying that he worries about where the knob of the bat is during his swing, and if the knob is where it needs to be, he knows his swing will be good.

But I do find myself wishing he had a little bit more of Altuve in him, see the ball, hit the ball, maybe not two feet off the plate, but swing at it without thinking too much.

He overthinks things, I believe.

The press release and now Luhnow’s comments are the reason why I counsel my clients to buy the crisis management add-on to insurance packages.  Allowing senior executives to rake-step their way through interview after interview does nothing but generate clicks for the media and bad press for the individuals and organization.

This is nowhere near complicated. It's not that someone's offshore rig is spewing 400,000 barrels of oil into the ocean every half hour. Some baseball dweeb got liquored up and went a-bullyin'. Several of you knuckleheads have offered sample apologies that would have put this whole thing to bed immediately. It is absolutely mind bending that the people running the team couldn't (or wouldn't) do that right away. Don't they know that the entire global sports media is staring squarely at them right now?

Discontent at Taubman's meteoric rise through the Astros FO was allegedly a large reason many familiar names decided to seek opportunity elsewhere. I have no opinion on Taubman's work or value to the organization, but he was promoted very high, very quickly, and the organization clearly values him, and it is unsurprising that they would seek to protect him.

Their method of protection is also unsurprising. In other, similar situations the organization has simply lied - obvious, immediately provable lies. I guess they learned that the local media has no appetite for conflict and that eventually people will forget about the lies and life will move on, and maybe that's the case here, too.

It's very puzzling that the team wouldn't have the awareness to realize that a response such as they gave is not only insulting but also will inevitably create an enormous and unwelcome story line literally on the eve of the World Series, and in this case they can't rely on the inept local media's indolence and general servitude to make it disappear.

Luhnow needs to get out in front of this tomorrow, immediately. But he'll probably end up saying that Taubman's transgressions are really ultimately a net positive since they'll help to raise awareness.

Well, I just wanted to share that since I last posted regularly on here, I have gotten my PHD in Musical Anthropology with an emphasis on American folk, blues, and roots musics. Anyway, one of the fascinating things I've discovered in the course of my studies is that the Bob Dylan song "Blowin' in the Wind" is actually about sucking dick.

What do you know about 'YMCA?'

155
Yordan put the ball in play, Machete hit it hard, the offense is firing on all cylinders.

156
This umpire is unreal.

157
That was a home run in one major league park.

Three runs is obviously nowhere near insurmountable. I bet Greinke would rather be up 4-1 though.

This also got me to thinking... does anyone know Bregman’s link to autism? I know his foundation works to provide technology assistance to kids on the spectrum, and he’s working to open a school dedicated to kids on the spectrum.

I assume there are other connections, but the son of his longtime hitting instructor and friend is autistic.

159
I posted this on April 10. I re-post it solely as a reaction to tonight's game and with full understanding that the series is completely in play.

I don't carry around the deep reserves of Yankee hate that some of you guys not unreasonably do, but I'm on board hoping they lose 100 games this year and I'll tell you why. I would like to think I have an appropriate level of respect for the game. Because of that, it offends me deeply that the Yankees seem to believe that they can assemble a competitive team by putting together a lineup of giant goons who can crush home runs and a bullpen the back of which features a bunch of guys who throw 100 miles per hour. I don't think defense registers even as an afterthought to these idiots. This team's defensive ineptitude offends me more than it brings me joy at the resulting failures. It's not surprising, I don't suppose. They sent Derek Jeter out to play shortstop for 20 years. For any number of those years the best shortstop in baseball played third base right next to him, so they obviously have never cared all that much about defense. But this is pretty bad.

It's not the worst defensive team I've ever seen, but they obviously don't care at all, and that pisses me off.

160
Not super crazy about leaving all these guys on base.

161
Gurriel's at bat there was amazing. His insistence on going the other way through the whole at bat shows a situational awareness not always fully present in every other Astro.

Also, Harris is a wonder to behold. He is in total control out there.

162
Rebel Jew appears. That's an unexpected development.

163
The home run doesn't bother me at all. The walk before it pisses me off.

164
Most of these pitches are not close.

165
The Trump Administration is now pursuing the curious political strategy of publicly admitting to crimes.

I don't know.  I like London Calling, but to my taste, there are a lot of weak songs on the album to make it a top 5.  Should have been a single album.  Lost in the Supermarket is such an overrated song.  And Jimmy Jazz?  Lover's Rock?  Meh.

Well, I love both of those songs. Lost in the Supermarket is not my favorite song in the world, but it has a role to play on the record and I think it does what it needs to do perfectly.

Of course, I'm someone who rejects out of hand the idea that Sandinista! should have been shortened.

And I should say that Ellington's catalog is crazy. I know pieces of it, and some small slices I know quite well. But it is a lifetime's commitment to try to understand just what a genius that guy was, and I don't know that I have that kind of time.

But you can pretty much dive in wherever and be immediately rewarded.

I'm assuming the other one is London Calling?

Of course.

It's funny, Limey references the title track, which is the only song on the record I don't particularly like. I mean, I listen to it, obviously. It's a strident introduction to a work of total genius. But it's the weakest song on the record to me, by far. And it's widely considered a classic song, if that gives any doubters an idea of how ridiculous the entire record is.

What are your other three? I don't know what mine are, really. They might change any time. But I'm pretty sure Loveless by My Bloody Valentine would be one of them any day you asked.

I like to give Hudson a hard time for being a goon because, well, obviously, but this is the second record he and I are in 100% agreeance on. Kind of Blue is ludicrous. To me it’s jazz in the same way that Bob Marley is reggae. Sure, it’s jazz. But it’s so, so much more.

Anything Miles did on Columbia I’m all in on (and that’s a lot), and anything Coltrane did with McCoy Tyner I am all in on. I don’t know offhand if any of his Impulse records didn’t feature McCoy. I think they overlap pretty significantly.

172
The amazing thing is, that's the worst Cole has pitched since May.

173
I've been to Yankee Stadium and have purchased items inside. Cheap is not the first word that comes to mind.

174
Will Harris had no intention of dicking around out there.

175
I'm as shocked that that didn't get out as I was that Gregorius' didn't.

176
What did the shirt say?

177
Yordan needs to wake the fuck up.

178
And most of them don’t care. (Some are nice people, I’m sure.)

Lara Trump defends her father in law's withdrawal because, according to her, most people would have to google to find out who the Kurds are.

The old 'I'm an ignorant fuckwit and you're likely an ignorant fuckwit so it's ok to leave our allies to certain slaughter' foreign policy argument.

179
I don't know if it's simple. Probably not but seeing the ball well against a different guy each time is probably really hard.

Meanwhile...7.2IP, 3H/2ER, 11K:4BB Yankee pen this series
                      4.2IP, 1H/0ER, 5K:2BB.   Astros pen this series.
Our guys are holding their own very nicely.

The pen was great last night but they gave up four runs in three innings in game one.

180
I really thought JFS meant just fucking score, now I see it for what it is.

Jesus Fucking Saves is what I came up with. A little edgy for an evangelical, yes, but they play live godrock at some of their services these days so I guess you never know.

Anyway, outSTANding day for Necktown sports. Astros beat a quality opponent, Nexans beat a quality opponent, Cowboys lose decisively to the second worst team in the NFL. OutSTANdiner'n hell.

181
When they come back they're going to interview Astros outfielder Gerry Springer.

182
I turned on the TV audio just in time to hear A-Rod refer to Correa as Carlos Beltran.

Looks like I didn't miss too much.

183
Also, Alex Rodriguez looks like a fucking clown. I mean, literally like a clown with all that absurd makeup he has on.

184
I'll just say that I appreciate the make up call by Blaser. It was a marginal pitch but Blaser realized he'd fucked up the previous pitch. Had the exact same thing happened with the Astros batting you would not hear shit from me about it.

185
Too close to take. He took a fat pitch and swung at a higher one in that AB.

Two fat pitches. It is unconscionable to get rung up there.

186
Pinch hitting for Jake there was a desperation move. Terrible.

The only truly idiotic thing BOB did was give Mahomes another down, and that of course led to a touchdown.

Otherwise, I thought this was about as well coached a game as you could possibly hope to see. The RPO with the TEs was a new wrinkle that the Chiefs had no answer for.

188
Greinke fine, bullpen terrible, offense worse than terrible.

The Astros need to wake the fuck up or the Yankees are going to ass rape them.

189
The Yankees are perfectly happy to hit the ball to the opposite field.

190
I wonder if they're going to talk about how the code-breaking factored in. In the middle of his extraordinary historical novel War and Remembrance, Herman Wouk interrupted the narrative to memorialize the pilots who--he thought at the time--just "happened" on the Japanese fleet after a desperate search.

Wait. So the Allies were stealing signs?

191
I'm feeling pessimistic about the team's offense tonight. I knew that when the count on Altuve went to 3-2 he'd strike out on a ball off the plate.

Yet for some reason I'm optimistic about Tucker tonight.

192
Buck calling Judge “underrated” at anything is comical.

I'm going to say this just this one last time, for this post season, anyway. You guys do this to yourselves. For all of you in Nexas, turn on the radio. For all of you outside of Nexas, drop $10 on MLB At Bat or whatever the app is. Your lives will improve immeasurably. In my own case, my blood pressure is down to about 240/180, so that is something of a triumph.

193
And here I was wondering if I was the only one. But no, I have found a community. I have what I thought was an irrational hatred for Gardner. Dick, yes. Like, Moby Dick dick.

Lots of guys who are dicks don't really bother me at all. We've been over this a bit. But for some reason Gardner fills me with uncontrollable rage.

I fear that when the Astros travel to Florida I'm going to lose my Astros radio feed option. They seem to offer only the home team feeds. I like Dewayne Staats for obvious reasons, but I'm going to go with the Tampa radio feed in Spanish.

And I'm going to tweet at whoever is doing the game that day, hopefully these same jackoffs, that they are so bad I would rather listen to the Spanish broadcast of the opposing team done by a guy who is motherfucking BLIND.

212
I'm watching but listening to the radio feed again. What are the tv guys saying about that fuckwit ballboy? They keep showing him.

213
Well, Jackass Cove has a new jackass.

214
Really impressive what they did with their pitching staff with Snell and Glasnow missing a huge chunk of the season.

If the Rays stay good and the Jays get good I will not be terribly upset.

And if the O's can... ahh, who am I kidding?

215
The worst thing about the Rays is that they're the opponent.

That's really about it.

216
Absoulutely.  Of course, I have personal reasons, but if not for the Astros, I'd easily be a Rays fan.

They have no payroll, no fans, the worst stadium in North American professional sports, I mean, the fuck are they doing over there? There is no universe in which they should be any good, ever.

217

People that are not watching and just getting pbp here, please note that Hudson is not exaggerating on the 'takes meatball down the middle for strikes one two and three' business. It is truly as bad as you're imagining it might be.

220
He really struggles with two strikes, not unusual for a rookie.

He struggles with no strikes, which is the thing that annoys me.

221
Very much so. AJ at least drops the occasional tidbit like why the umpire is more likely to miss the high inside strike.

AJ is a dick (even as a broadcaster) and my hatred for him as a player perhaps factors unfairly in how I consider him now. But he does know about baseball, and he will occasionally make a decent point.

If he does, someone's going to have to share it with me.

AJ Dickhead is one of the guys so you're making the right decision.

I think Girardi is worse. Far worse, actually.

I'm sure we are. It's this, more or less:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mullet_(fish)

When I was a kid you could catch all of these you wanted off of any pier in Texas. No one ate them, they were used solely for bait. The ones here have a yellowish hue to them. I like trying all sorts of unusual fish and I usually find that I can do something good with fish most people don't value.

I used to go fishing in the Bahamas all the time and the prized catch was yellowtail snapper. We were on a boat that was unofficially commercial. We'd bring back the catch and sell it to a local market. So I never ended up with yellowtail, which was fine with me. Pompano, margate, even blue runners. I'll find a way to eat any fish.

And if some idiot wanted to charge me $160 per pound for fish, you can bet I'd be in my kayak catching them, too. I went to the fish market today and I bought three kinds of fish including red snapper and I'm pretty sure I didn't pay more than $2.50 a pound for anything.

I remember the Australian fish markets and how the naming of the various varieties is strictly controlled. Here you get bobo.

That reminds me, have I ever mentioned to you goons that I have a species of animal named after me? I do, and I am inordinately proud of it. A close friend is an Australian marine parasitologist, and in his doctoral research he discovered a previously unknown parasite, ugly, angry and highly invasive, thought of me for some reason, and was kind enough to bestow it my name. Benedenia fieldsi.

No one is criticizing him for lack of perfection, dude. We all know that the greatest batters in the league fail 70% of the time. I don't mind that he expands the zone. He gets a lot of hits on bad pitches. There have been other hitters like that. I'd just love to see him be a little more selective. More importantly, time and time again he goes up to the plate in important situations and shows zero recognition of what's needed at that time. I don't know where that comes from, why he's not more sensitive to the game situation.

Altuve is an elite hitter. It is impossible to fathom how much better he would be if he had any sort of plate discipline or demonstrated any sort of situational awareness whatsoever.

Texans let Ben Jones walk a few years ago, only to draft his lesser replacement in the 2nd? round and then pay him more.

Don’t forget Pro Bowler Brandon Brooks.

These are the GOOD players they let walk for no reason. We’re not even discussing the terrible picks they’ve made on OL over the last five years or so.

I'll just take this opportunity to point out that the Texans this week signed center Nick Martin to an extension placing him among the top three paid at the position league wide.

Last year, PFF graded him fifth. Fifth in the league?! No. Fifth in the division. A division of four teams.

Man, if I were in charge of the Trump show I would be doing this kind of shit constantly. Trump markers, an oversized Trump driver that is 100% guaranteed to hit straight every time, a Trump tie that goes down to you knees, Trump cages for your unruly kids, grandkids, more probably, decorative mushroom penis candles, those lunatics will buy anything.

One of the biggest flaws in what appears to be a hastily conceived plan is that he ran for president after he quit peddling meat, vodka, water, wine, flights, online classes, who knows what else. Now pretty much all his minions have left is a night at one of the hotels, which would probably stretch the budget of the camouflage to church crowd. Reddick's insistence on trying to pull everything disgusts me. There was no one on the left side of the infield and strike two, which he took, was the perfect pitch to slap into left field. Instead he swings as hard as he can at everything, trying to hit the ball into the right field bleachers. Baseball in 2019.

Chuck casting from an inflatable kayak. What could possibly go wrong?

I bought it off this guy who was crazy as fuck. He lived up in the mountains, not sure what he was doing with the kayak in the first place. Anyway, he would walk around town ranting to himself out loud. He eventually moved to Ecuador.

I just remembered that I had some problems buying it because I was in Argentina at the time and PayPal doesn't work all that great down there.

It's pretty stable, actually. I feel like I can do pretty much whatever I want with it in calmish seas.

I like to put fish directly on the grill, too, but the cholo method is great. I was out with a buddy once and we caught so many wahoo that we eventually got tired of it. We ended up feeding the whole town.

I bought a big Dorado yesterday, a mahi mahi, and I'm about to cook some of it cholo style, which is portion it, wrap it loosely in foil with a bit of simple seasoning, I'm going to drizzle a little olive oil on it, and then toss it on the grill quickly.

I talked with a guy today about the fishing situation out here. He said you have to go out onto the rocks and fish beyond there, that there are plenty of fish out there, or you can, as I suspected, walk down to where the river empties and do OK there. He said it's best to fish off a kayak out in front of the rocks and cast back in towards them. Fortunately, I have an inflatable kayak, so I'll try that out. He also said the best rig for fishing around the rocks is nothing more than a hook and a little slip shot for a bit of weight, cast it out there and there you go.

I have no idea if people catch fish in the surf here. I rarely see people fishing in the surf. A few people have told me that they do and have success, but I've never seen it.

I have had very minor success on other beaches around here, but I've never really paid any attention to the time and tides. The place where we are is directly in front of a large rock formation that you can walk on during low tide and gets covered up more or less at high tide. The beach to the left has fewer waves, smaller, less frequent waves, and I decided to fish there. There's quite a current sweeping from the rocks to the left, I could feel it in the rods, and I have noticed it swimming out there, and it could be that there just simply aren't any bait fish in that current so close to the rocks.

I'll try the other side of the rock formation later. I'll also walk farther down the beach; there's a small river that empties into the ocean maybe a third of a mile down the beach, and I imagine the fishing is better down there. I'll also experiment with different rigs.

317
Did you hire Neil as your guide?

10 years of healthy Correa skillset, is probably enough to be in the HoF. He has elite power, hit tool, very good speed for his size and good defense. The only thing he hasn't had is consistent health

Spinger is second most talented, then Bregman and then Altuve. Altuve has by far the smallest margin for error.

The idea that you would, alone, take your four boys to games in Baltimore absolutely blows my mind. I can't take my kid to the goddamn grocery store alone without that little lunatic's running off into the ether. If I had four of them, they'd each pick a cardinal direction and I'd have to decide which I thought had the best chance of survival until the age of majority and run after that one. Or, thinking this through a little more, maybe pick the one with the worst chance. I'll never know, hopefully.

Oh, I've been to Camden Yards, too, of course. Many times. I like it just fine but am a little mystified by those of you guys who rank it so high. I like the parks in Pittsburgh and Seattle better, just off the top of my head.

I'm pretty sure Get Happy!! is the record I've spent the most time with, but I can get lost in anything he's ever done, even records I don't really like all that much.

I celebrate the guy's entire catalog.

Eschenfelder is absolutely a huge part of the problem. But Lance wasn't that much better with Kalas. In fact, Kalas seemed to sort of egg him on.

All of this goes to show that broadcasting baseball is not all that easy a thing to do well. JD and BB were GOAT I think, but Kalas and Blum are far, far better than most. Lots of other teams have the equivalent of Eschenfelder and Lance every game. Or worse.

Missing fairly badly on his arm side. Lance will tell you why.

By the way, since Navin wants to play, if he doesn't end up replacing a former owner who is understandably intimidated by our collective fantasy acumen, I'm happy to open it up to two new managers. Mainly because I spent most of last year feeling like I had too many good players and found myself wishing we could water the league down some.

Maldonado would have been perfect, yes. It's too bad they got outbid for him if it's in fact true that the Astros were in on him.

I don't know nearly enough about the bottom five guys on bad teams' rosters to know who might fit the bill. I do know that plus defensive catchers are not all that easy to come by.

I was pretty ambivalent about the Chirinos signing when it happened. It's just another in a long line of examples of where I was perhaps not fully informed.

He also explicitly (surprisingly, to me) said that they could use an upgrade at catcher and that if they found one, one of the two guys would obviously have to leave.

He's right, of course, backup catcher is the only real area of possible improvement among position players, and it's arguably a glaring one.

When you've got to go clear to Alabama to buy your Sunday beer, you know you're living in a fucked up state.

In Necktown in the same era the blue laws apparently were such that an establishment had to be closed one day a week, but that day was not specified. That's my surmise, anyway, because there was a store called Sage that managed to stay fully open on Sundays by closing or at least roping off most of their departments on Saturday. I guess that ploy worked well enough for them because they managed to stay in business until the repeal of the blue laws, whenever that was.

The Sage nearest my childhood home was on the southeast corner of 610 and Beechnut. There's a Lowe's in that spot now. The main thing I remember about Sage was the nearly overpowering aroma of popcorn.

I doubt very seriously he could get into the crouch. Although on the plus side the chest protector might be superfluous.

Sure, there are college players who would not embarrass  themselves in AA, but the average to below average AA position player would be one of the top players on the best college teams, and the sheer pitching depth of an AA team would overwhelm college teams.

Almost all AA guys have a legitimate shot at a big league career, or at least their organizations think they do. I would imagine the percentage of guys on a really good college team with a legitimate shot is quite small.

Talk Zone / Re: Tucker in June

Duh. Maybe elite clubs are but nothing higher than this.

He was talking about it in the context of their first round pick out of Cal, he said that he felt like if they were looking at a college player who went to a school like that he could usually extrapolate that performance and compare that level of competition to High A and, he said, even AA.

I have no idea what would happen if one of today's CWS teams played a three game series with any give High A or AA team. I expect the professional team would win handily most of the time, but I thought it was interesting that Luhnow thought he could gauge a player's potential in High A or AA from having watched him compete at a school in a good conference.

Brantley has never played first in the majors. But assuming he could, if you had to snag an outfielder and put him at first, he'd be the more logical option than Reddick.

Talk Zone / Re: Tucker in June
« on: June 16, 2019, 03:21:12 pm »
This time last year, everything you said about Tucker was how he was special. Then he struggled and now everytime you talk about him is in reference to trading him. Is that not considering him a failure? If you're just hoping to trade him, kind of a failure for a guy who had star potential.

I think Jim heard something about Tucker from someone who knows that has changed his perception of him as a player. That is conjecture on my part, by the way.

I can envision a scenario where Reddick ends up playing a significant amount of first base. Next year would be more likely than this year, but this year is a possibility too.

Kind of weird to pluck a near elite defensive player out of the outfield and give him a first baseman's glove, but I guess that's what happens if you have tons of bats trying to get in the lineup.

That's the thing, from everything I've gathered and from the very little I've seen, this lunatic is just a great hitter who happens to be a giant human that results in his hitting the ball a goddamn long way.

I mean, just now, that was a pretty good pitch. He didn't crush a mistake, he hit a good pitch where the pitcher wanted to put it. And rather than try to pull it he just went with it. It seems like that's what he always does, and that's an incredible level of maturity and wisdom for someone with that kind of natural power.
