Beer and Queso / *IX question
« on: February 08, 2010, 01:53:22 pm »
This is total nerdorama, so feel free to take whatever potshots are required for such a pencil-necked question. I've done what feels like an exhaustive search online, and can't quite come up with a solution, so for those familiar with working on the shell in *ix, how would you accomplish the following:

Trying to recursively locate all files which contain a pattern, and list the filenames. I have used the following to find whether there ARE files with a pattern, but haven't figured out how to modify it so that it tells me which file resulted in a match (the end result is it prints the line with the matching pattern to STDOUT, but doesn't prepend that with the name of the file, which WOULD be the case if I weren't running this through xargs):

find . -type f -name "*.*"| xargs -i grep pattern '{}'

Thanks :)

Beer and Queso / Anyone have a glove I can borrow?
« on: October 13, 2009, 09:37:10 am »
I guess at 39, it's the right "age" for these types of things, but... I joined a denial league at work, that's going to play for the next month or so. Thing is, I have no equipment. Anyone have a glove I could borrow? I seriously doubt we're going to assign permanent positions to everyone, so it wouldn't matter to me if it's an F3 or F8 glove (pretty sure I won't be catching... my knees can't handle that).

I'm working out around 290@Hollister, live in the Heights, games are on South Main. First game is tonight at 6:30 (yeah, I JUST realized the eq shortcomings this morning), so anywhere in those areas is cool.

Thanks :)

It sounds like most of your work is out in West Texas, but I was wondering what you'd heard about prospects in the Frio and Vicksburg trends here on the Texas Coast and Miocene and Oligocene trends on the LA coast? I've audited a few E&P companies, but most are in West Texas/NM and the Barnett shale. One is in Louisiana, but it's SE (Vermillion, etc.).

Just curious. Thanks :)

Beer and Queso / Video producer/editor
« on: September 18, 2009, 12:22:26 pm »
I hope this isn't against any posting rules.

My husband was effectively laid off as of last week (contract gig came to an abrupt end, about 3.5 months earlier than anticipated). He's looking for work, and his preferred field would be in video editing and production (including live TV). Tons of experience, including with NLEs. Anyone heard of or know anyone looking to hire or contract out some work along those lines?

Thanks.

Beer and Queso / TVs
« on: August 06, 2009, 03:43:44 pm »
I am waaaay behind on TV technology. In fact, I don't think I've even laid eyes on a broadcast in HD yet. We have a 27" CRT that was a floor model unit when I bought it about 10 years ago. Since then, I've seen all sorts of terms related to non-CRT TVs fly by: plasma, LCD and now LED apparently.

Can someone recommend a good primer on sorting these out for a purchase?

Beer and Queso / Here's a beer post from me
« on: July 17, 2009, 04:52:19 pm »
Haven't found any PBR here yet, so I hope that's not disappointing.

However, have you ever wanted to drink while riding your bike around, but you were afraid you'd:

1. Spill your beer
2. Get too blitzed to drive?

Well, Germany has the solution (of course).

Not sure if y'all can tell, but the patrons at the "bar" there, all pedal, which is what makes the thing move. There was one tooling around the Heumarkt here in Cologne during dinner (which, btw, was 9:30pm and still full daylight out). Pretty funny. Presumably the driver does not partake.

Beer and Queso / Question for the Dads here

Well it's the first official "Father's Day" in our household this year. My dad died long ago, so I have no idea what's typically "done" or "wanted" by Fathers on "their day" anymore, especially for a first one. Suggestions? (Daddy's got a girl, if that makes a difference.)

Beer and Queso / Other Season Finales
« on: May 13, 2009, 04:53:21 pm »
OK, in light of the Lost discussions, what other season finales have folks found discussable?

For me, the House finale on Monday was just terrific. Hugh Laurie is sooo overdue for an Emmy that it's not even funny. The final 7 minutes of that episode were just brilliant, IMO. Five years and so much self-destructive behavior while teetering on the edge of full posession of one's sanity, and then to see that final realization on House's face that he had tipped over into the abyss was just... goodness, so sad to witness, but with a strong undercurrent of "finally! get some HELP!!"

Just showing off my LO :) She got her first taste of a slice of orange yesterday (to that point, creamed peas were the least-bland flavored thing she's tasted in her life). Captured that hilarious moment on cellphone video. Also, entered a photo of her in a contest to be on the cover of the November Baby Talk magazine. First thing I did with the new Mac (while fussing around on it, and learning the programming interface), actually, was make a couple slideshow videos of photos taken of her a couple weeks ago. Amazingly easy process with iPhoto.

Links below.

Beer and Queso / Sheesh
« on: April 03, 2009, 11:12:00 am »
My husband just got pulled over driving our pickup for having an expired registration tag. Fortunately when the cop ran the check he saw that the registration was current, just the tag hadn't been replaced on the truck itself. I picked that up a few weeks ago, and brought it home (was driving the other vehicle, so couldn't replace it immediately). My husband called to ask where it was and I said I dunno, I thought he had put it on the truck when I brought it home. Soo.... good chance he just tossed it away as another piece of paper lying around. Grr. Anyhow... anyone know the process for getting a replacement registration sticker? I'm sure it'll cost, but the truck IS registered, so hopefully not cost a full second registration.

Thanks.

I'm looking forward to spending part of it in a crowded restaurant, wearing some kind of over-sized carnation, probably :)

However, I'll start the day off with something a bit more important than browsing the menu at Outback. I'll be participating in a 3-mile "Walk to empower" as part of the Breast Cancer Network Of Strength's primary fund raising effort. If anyone here is interested in participating (it will take probably an hour or so of your time, that morning of Mother's Day) or would like to donate to this wonderful organization (which provides immediate emotional support via 24/7 telephone counseling, screenings, wigs/prostheses provisions, etc. to those affected by breast cancer), please visit my web page at the charity's site:

http://walk.networkofstrength.org/hollydutton

There is lots more information there, about what BCNS does, and about the walks (which are being held around the country) as well.

Thanks, all!

Beer and Queso / For those who want to beta...
« on: March 20, 2009, 02:31:51 pm »
Just looking ahead here... there's some information I will need about the devices on which the beta versions will run. Not everyone knows what a UDID is or where to get it, so there's a free little utility in the App Store which will email the information I (the developer) would need about your device to me.

Do a search for a utility app called "Ad Hoc Helper" - it's free, and the icon for it is a black box that says "UDID" on it. Just punch in my email address and it'll send the required information to me (namely, your device's UDID), provided you can hit a wifi that lets you out into the net. I can beta up to 100 folks, so don't go knocking down the door to get to me, heh. You can use [email protected] -- thanks!

I'm learning Spanish and picked up some pulpy books to learn more colloquial manners of speech than what the textbooks teach. I've come across a passage though that's kinda unclear, and Babelfish isn't of much assistance, what with pronoun intentions getting muddled. I've been getting these random texts on my cellphone from a number I don't know, and they are in Spanish... but in shorthand text format. I texted back in normal Spanish (which I don't really speak or read well) telling the person they have the wrong phone number, and asking who they are. Got this in response.

Oh perdon entos kien eres. - Tu guapito.

Can someone translate? Can't run it through babelfish because things are mostly likely spelled wrong/lazily.

Beer and Queso / Anyone here live in "SW" Houston?
« on: August 12, 2008, 02:32:11 pm »
My husband and I are looking at a house to rent, off Stella Link about a mile south of the Loop. Not sure if this is considered south Bellaire (thumbs-up), or far east Westbury/Meyerland/Sharpstown (ew). For those with specific knowledge, it's the little area just south of Shearn Elementary (called Westwood, I believe). We drove around, and it looked nice enough -- mostly 1950s ranches, with some new construction) -- and there's certainly no shortage of retail access in that corner of the city (as opposed to living downtown like we do now ... it's a "trip" to just get groceries, from here).

Anyone live down there, who can comment on the commute to/from downtown (either car commute or rail/Metro bus), safeness, etc.?

Thanks!

Can anyone recommend some tattoo shops in town? My husband has decided he'd like to get a tattoo for his birthday. I have one, but got it in Austin almost 20 years ago. OK so I just completed week 1 of 2 in Woking (Surrey area, about half an hour southwest of London). Nothing to do around here at night or on the weekends -- unless you are apparently about 14, and don't mind wearing essentially NOTHING out in 40-degree weather, to go to underage clubs -- so I've been watching TV. Needless to  say, lots of soccer, and surprisingly enough plenty of coverage of the primaries. Not a peep about baseball, and I have to pay for internet access, so I'm pretty far behind on Astros news. It's what, 2 weeks until pitchers-and-catchers-report is uttered? Looks like Valverde is about to sit across the table from Tal, too.

Limey, I'm curious but what the heck is up with this thing that's on TV all hours of the day... guys rolling balls down blue carpeted pathway. Looks like the goal is similar to marbles where you get your ball as close to some dot on the carpet as possible. The balls always wind face-up when they stop rolling, too. It's about as scintillating as curling, but better than the other mid-day alternatives. Upside is I found a channel entirely in German, so I have all the German reality TV I can stomach! BBC1 and whatever T 4 is appear to be the most palatable. Interesting new program called "City of Vice" starring the guy who played the Emperor in Star Wars.

Anyhow.

Can't wait til Spring Training cranks back up!

Best guess is that this is the result of celebration following picking up my CPA certificate in Austin around the beginning of the month, which puts the arrival date roughly around the beginning of August (best time to give birth, middle of a blazing hot Houston summer).

I'm juggling some airline schedules for international travel, and will probably go through NYC. On the map, LGA and JFK don't appear to be that far apart, but if I have to "switch planes" between the two, is there a rule of thumb on how long to give myself for moving between them?

I'm guessing there's a train that runs between the two (which to me, would be more reliable than hailing a cab, timewise).

Thanks everyone :)

My brother's band (he's the drummer) debuted their first music video at the Houston Halloween Film Festival this past weekend. The video was shot at the Foodorama on TC Jester in late August. My husband and I wandered over (after my bro told us about the shoot) after taking in an Astros game, and we're in the background pushing shopping carts around (along with a buncha other folks doing the same thing). My husband and I are probably going to adopt a dog soon, so we went to the SPCA last night. One particular dog caught my attention (and our current dog, a terrier, actually played with this one, rather than just engaging in the obligatory genital-sniffing), and the card indicated she was a dobermann-dachshund mix (which I've since seen called a weiner-pinscher, hahaha). I don't know much about EITHER of these breeds. Anyone had them? Noe, I believe yours is a weiner, no?

Also, this particular one is still a large puppy - 7 months. Been awhile since either of us has had anything but a full-grown dog, so I can't remember when they stop getting taller.

He had, at best, marginal interest in baseball before we got married, but now living 3 blocks from MMP is rubbing off on him, and he's actually finding things out on his own :) Haven't yet gone over the "so, what's this `infield fly rule' about?" but things are moving along nicely!

Anyhow, he found this gem of a website, so I figured I'd share it with y'all:

Talk Zone / Adam Everett - hunk?
« on: July 11, 2007, 08:56:14 am »
OK, so I'm sitting at the optometrist's office yesterday, waiting for my husband to finish getting his contacts fitted. They have the usual assortment of magazines for a MidTown office, including "Houston" magazine, which seems to be little more than a large-format glossy full of stick people and socialite reports of goings-on around town (where "town" means River Oaks, for the most part). I'm flipping through and get to the requisite glam-trash article, and for June it was the "Lust List." It covered places to take your sensual significant other, skimpy clothes, and... Adam Everett was on the list. Yup. According to that rag he's a hunky boyish type. They emphasized more that he's a sweetheart to his wife, but there was some pretty serious fangirl (or fanboy, given the nature of some of that stuff) going on, too.

Everett said that Ausmus has given him some tips, along with his wife. So, apparently Ausmus is a bit of a Midas touch, for raising the squeeling factor a bit, on other teammates.

Adam Everett a hunk. Whodathunk?

There's a drive-in theater about half-way between 290 and Tomball, on 2920, which is great fun. Went there this past Saturday with my better half, and we took in Die Hard and 1408 for $10 total. They broadcast the show over a very short-range FM channel, so the sound is as good as the radio you use. For those with wimpy car batteries, they will give you a jump, if it dies during the movie. Also, while there is a concession stand there, feel free to roll up with a portable buffet in your vehicle, if you like. Pets seem to be welcome, as well.

I really enjoyed the experience -- one I haven't taken part in, since whenever Close Encounters came out.

Berkman is #32 (right behind Jeter... woddafock?)

That's it for the Astros. Interesting that they focussed on Roy's K ratio decline. Strikeouts are fascist anyhow, right? Not much in there to emphasize the importance of defense (the two highest-ranking shortstops on the list have their offensive abilities covered, but not their fielding abilities, and likewise for the Braves' young catcher).

I caught the tail end of some comments before a break, when Granato mentioned they were going to talk a little bit about Richard Justice when they returned... and Lance hung the title "writer of wrongs" on him. Well, at least I like to think that's the spelling Lance had in mind, when he said that.

I get to do some business and vacation travelling for the next 6 weeks, which will take me to Chicago, Denver and Corpus. Figured I may as well take in some baseball while I'm out there. It might partially make up for the fact that this will be the first year I have not been to a single Astros game, since 1995

So I'm looking for recommendations on:

1. Where to sit at Wrigley for the Reds game next Saturday (16th) so that I'm not facing the sun for a 5pm start
2. A smart way to navigate between Wrigley and O'Hare (I'll be sans car)
3. Where to sit at Coors Field for the Giants game there on Monday the 18th (6:35pm start), as well as a place to take in dinner before/after. I'll have a car in Denver... what's the parking like around there?

Also, how smart is it to wait and get walk-up tickets at either place? Would I be better off ordering online and going willcall?

Anyone know whether the AA playoffs will (still) be ongoing by September 24th? I'd LOVE to take in a Hooks game, if possible, since I'm going to be in Corpus for a month.

Thanks all.

Talk Zone / Grimsley and the MLBPU
« on: June 12, 2006, 06:39:32 pm »
It shouldn't be surprising to me, but it still is. Grimsley is caught with stuff he shouldn't be caught with, confesses to using it, names names, and asks for a release (which the Diamondbacks granted, with a big fat DUH). Now he (and his agent) think they - I mean HE - is entitled to his salary. AND, the players' union is expected to file a grievance. Comment from his agent is "released players get paid."

I hope the PU are met head on, told to FOAD, and the case is laughed out of whatever court it lands in. THAT kind of gall just rankles my hide.

SI's doing some weird "because we can" mock draft, and gave the Texans the following 1st pick:

1. Houston, Tom Brady, QB --  The last time we saw Brady perform in Houston, he was doing the Joe Montana thing in Super Bowl XXXVIII. All of a sudden, the Texans' offensive line -- not to mention their receivers, running backs, defenders, Yao Ming's foot and the enchiladas verdes at Chuy's -- just got a whole lot better.

Actually, Astros related by way of omission. Looks like the SI folks didn't think the Astros needed to get "a whole lot better." That, or they forgot there's a team in Houston. Gee, which is more likely of those two? Heh.

Talk Zone / Maybe this is significant?
« on: April 20, 2006, 01:24:12 pm »
OK, so we got moved into a room with a window for this audit, and I'm plugging away here, when I hear some quiet "bang" sounds against the window, like someome throwing dirtclods. I look over, and nothing. Another couple "bangs" and this time something catches my peripherall vision... a form bouncing up out of the bushes by the window, against the glass, falling down.

My first thought was "some stupid cat outside is trying to jump through the window."

A couple minutes later, and another bang. I look over quickly and see... a cardinal flit up out of the bushes and into the tree, then fly away.

Haha. A Cardinal banging its head against the wall in the Busches here. Maybe it's a sign of things to come?

LOL, as I reach to click the "Continue" button and post, the dumb bird is back. i think it's trying to "land" on the horizontal miniblinds which are inside, of course.

Had himself a most excellent 7th inning. Not only did Lance Berkman bang a single off the LF wall after hitting that homer, but Lance Berkman ran past Jose Cruz, Jr. at first. However, Lance Berkman smarted up a bit, and morphed into Morgan Ensberg just in time to get tagged out stretching that single into a double.

Why is this guy in the booth? Does he tug on Brenly's nutsack to see if they can drop for a less feminine sound? Or is he there to just remind Steve Lyons to keep his pants on? Which one of them has that Cameron Diaz-like giggle? Guh.
