Talk Zone / Zambrano 'retires'
« on: August 13, 2011, 09:10:02 am »,0,2460261.story

Carlos Zambrano cleaned out his locker and told friends he was retiring Friday night after serving up five home runs and getting ejected in a 10-4 loss to the Braves.

Things became really ugly in the fifth when Freddie Freeman and Dan Uggla hit back to back home runs. Zambrano then threw two inside pitches at Chipper Jones, missing both times.

After the second one, plate umpire Ted Timmons ejected Zambrano.

As Zambrano stared at Jones while walking off the field, the Braves dugout emptied. Curiously, the Cubs' dugout did not budge, and there were no incidents. But if there was any question as to why no contender is interested in taking Zambrano off the Cubs' hands, it might have been answered in that scene.

Caught the tale end, but he was whining about being yanked after 3 innings. He was alluding to the lack of confidence that Coop has had in him this season.

Somebody else might fill in more specific details, but it was evident that he was pretty unhappy.

Talk Zone / Tagging the runner is overrated
« on: July 06, 2009, 10:16:12 pm »
Jeter thought he was safe. The ball had beaten him there, but he moved his left hand around Scott Rolen's glove and replays showed he touched the bag before Rolen's tag.

"He didn't tag me," Jeter told Foster.

"He didn't have to," Foster said, according to Jeter. "The ball beat you."

So less than a minute later, when Girardi received the same reasoning Jeter did, the manager was ejected.

Foster was not made available to reporters after the game. Crew chief John Hirschbeck said Jeter may have been in the right, but couldn't say for sure. He had not spoken to Foster about his exchange with Jeter.

"It would make (Jeter's) actions seem appropriate if that's what he was told," Hirschbeck told reporters. "It used to be if the ball beat you, you were out, but it isn't that way anymore. It's not a reason to call someone out. You have to make a good tag."

Talk Zone / Braun still an arrogant asshat
« on: July 06, 2009, 07:02:33 pm »
On the Brewer's pitching

Asked about the rotation missing Dave Bush (DL) and Manny Parra (demoted to the minors), Braun said, "Regardless of the reasons, we’ve got to find a way to throw the ball a little bit better for us to have success. When you’re constantly behind in games, it’s not easy and not fun.

On the Cubs

Braun said the Cubs' starting pitchers are "a lot better than ours."

"They threw the ball a lot better than our starters did," said Braun. "They certainly swung the bats better than we did as well. Clearly, they were the better team.

"It was nice to at least get one win but they clearly outplayed us and outperformed us during the series."

On what he would do as a GM

"I wish I got to make decisions like that," Braun said with a smile. "I wish I was in those conversations. I know he’s trying to make our ball club better. I know [GM Melvin] recognizes the importance of making a move and making it soon.

"At the same, I think everybody has recognized there are a lot of teams still in the race. There are not too many teams willing to give guys up and if they are, the asking price is pretty high.

"That being said, it would be nice to make a move and it would be nice to do something to help us out for the time being. The sooner we do it, the better."

"To show everybody we’re for real, we can go out there and make a move and improve our ball club. We want to head in the right direction, not the wrong direction. "

We’re kind of at the point right now where it would be important for us to go out there and acquire somebody. They’d be more inclined to do that if we’re winning."

Melvin responds

“It was inappropriate for him to say what he said, and I’m not happy about it,” Melvin said.

“To make the statements he made and also get on his teammates like that, it was irresponsible on his part. It just ticked me off.”

“We all work every day from 9 a.m. to midnight, and basically 12 months a year,” said Melvin, referring to his baseball staff. “I’ll be glad to have Ryan help if he wants to. I’ll give him a badge and he can be my deputy.

“I don’t know his motivation for saying it. It demoralizes the people in the organization at a time when we should be pulling together. It puts a bad taste in our mouths. That’s a pretty strong statement.

“I understand that maybe he thinks it’s taking a leadership role. I don’t know if he’s trying to tell me I’m not doing my job. We need to stick together as an organization. We’re all trying to win."

Melvin said it wasn’t appropriate for Braun to make unflattering comparisons between the Brewers’ starting rotation and Chicago’s, even with two spots in flux since the losses of Bush and Parra.

“I think he made a fundamental mistake,” said Melvin. “I didn’t hear our pitchers complaining when we lost a 1-0 game (to New York last week) or the 2-1 game in 10 innings in Chicago.

“They didn’t say the hitters weren’t doing their job. He’s hitting in front of one of the best hitters (Prince Fielder) in the game.”

Talk Zone / Zambrano done after current contract
« on: June 06, 2009, 07:50:33 pm »
"After this contract, I'm done," said Zambrano, who is signed through 2012 with a vesting option for 2013. "I'm serious. I don't want to play. I want to help this team, I want to do everything possible to win with this team, but after five years or four years, or whatever I have left on my contract, I just don't want to play.

Fuck the Cubs.

Talk Zone / Cooper in the postgame - 5/26
« on: May 26, 2009, 10:35:04 pm »
JdJO (I think): Coop, is there anything that you could do to help this team or lead this team to wins?

Coop: I think I'm doing everything I can. Changing the lineup, moving people around... I mean, that's all you can do. You got some other ideas, I'm open to listening but that's all you can do... you change the lineup, you try to motivate them everyday. That's all you can do.

Alyson questioned on the status of Blum and Kaz. Coop was emphatic that they were day to day and he wouldn't know anything until tomorrow, and when Alyson probed as to how that shortened his bench he relented that Kaz was available in an emergency.
