Talk Zone / Alvarez
« on: October 25, 2019, 11:28:09 am »
Curious what the prevailing opinion here is regarding Alvarez now that his bat is showing some life. Are we starting him in left tonight or is he a pinch hitter only?

Sad to hear. He was a good pitcher.

Talk Zone / 2019 Trade Deadline Talk
« on: June 16, 2019, 04:41:53 pm »
I don’t have a subscription to The Athletic yet, but this morning Jim Bowden went over some potential trades for AL contenders that he wrote in an article. One proposal discussed at length involved the Twins sending Graterol and Gordon to the Giants for Bumgarner and Smith. Graterol is the Twins’ number one pitching prospect and Gordon is a highly thought of middle infielder ranked 10th in their system. The trade would solve two issues with the Twins and would be a big move by them.

The proposal got me to thinking about the Astros. I think Houston could use another starter and a solid left handed out of the pen like the Giants’ Smith. San Francisco is apparently wanting outfield help. Would you do a trade to acquire Bumgarner and Smith for Tucker and Bukauskas? Tucker and James? Tucker and Martin?

Just curious to see what the board thinks.

Talk Zone / Yankees just acquired Encarnacion.

According to reports. The return is a 19-year old pitcher who is ranked 27th in the Yankees’ system. Looks like Mariners will also pick up abut half the salary.

Talk Zone / Astros call up Armenteros

Derek Fisher going down. I’m guessing they want to get back to 13 pitchers and it will be Armenteros for now.

Talk Zone / Keuchel and his Kunundrum [emoji16]
« on: March 18, 2019, 09:41:50 pm »
So the Yankees, who could use a pitcher with the injuries they have, bypass Keuchel and have signed Gio Gonzalez. They have seen Keuchel have some good games in Yankee stadium so they know he can pitch in that environment. Most all baseball people would rate Keuchel the better pitcher. In fact, MLBTR has Gonzalez ranked number 27 on their top 50 free agent list whereas they had Keuchel as the 4th best free agent. The Yankees signed Gio to a base contract of $3M with some incentives on top. MLBTR had predicted 2 at $24 for Gio. So where AAV is concerned, Gio got 25% of what was predicted by MLBTR. They predicted Keuchel would sign a deal for 4 at $82M. So, 25% of that AAV would be $5. Now, I really don’t think the price will get that low for him. If he would sign for $5M every team in the league would jump on that. But where do you think this settles?? He must still be asking for the moon for the Yankees to sign Gio instead.

I would think at this point Dallas would be panicked, if not in full blown melt down. The dollar amount teams are willing to pay must be dropping by the day, if not the hour. At this point, if he signed today he isn’t pitching in a regular season game until almost end of April. Who is giving him a $20M AAV for that? Is his price 50% of MLBTR predicted? Seventy-five percent? At what point does he realize that if he doesn’t sign, he may very well not pitch until May? June?

It is going to be interesting to see when/if he signs and for how much. I’m thinking there is no way he gets $20M at this point. I’m thinking if he signed today the price is 12-15M. It certainly appears that he would rather sit than swallow his pride and admit he (and Boras) way overestimated his market value. One thing is clear. The Yankees, who need pitching and have seen Keuchel pitch well in their stadium, appear to have had no interest at whatever price he is seeking.

Talk Zone / Changes to the game coming this year??
« on: February 05, 2019, 09:53:10 pm »
Just reported via Ken Rosenthal that the players association has requested that the DH be implemented league wide before the start of the upcoming 2019 season. It was part of proposed changes exchanged between the MLBPA and MLB in January. The league wants a 3 batter minimum for relief pitchers when pitching changes are made.

Talk Zone / 2019 schedule has been released
« on: August 22, 2018, 11:55:02 am »
We open with 4 in Tampa and 3 at Texas for a 7 game trip to open the season. Home opener is the A’s on April 5th. The AL West is matched up against the NL Central next year for interleague play so that should make most everyone happy.

Talk Zone / Nats’ Daniel Murphy
« on: August 21, 2018, 07:11:09 am »
MLB Radio reporting this morning that someone has claimed Daniel Murphy. The feeling is that it is an American League team and the NY Post says it is NOT the Yankees. It would be interesting if it was Houston. Could be the left handed bat we need. Murphy is a tough, tough out and could be great coming off the bench late in games against tough bullpen pieces. He would be a backup option if Altuve’s knee flares back up and he could platoon in DH spot with Gattis and bat against the righties.

It would most likely mean however that Tyler White goes back down. Any deal would have to happen by tomorrow. He is still owed about 5 million so it is possible according to MLB Radio that the Nats could let the team who claimed him have him.

There is the pen help but he hasn’t exactly been shutdown. WHIP is 1.36 and ERA over 3.50. Good strikeout numbers though. Hopefully Strom can work some magic.

Talk Zone / “We will get a closer”
« on: July 17, 2018, 05:04:33 pm »
From the take it for what it’s worth department, Jim Bowden just said on the air that Jeff Luhnow told him “I won’t let AJ down again, we will get a closer.”

Gonna be interesting. Hope that C Perez isn’t in a deal.

My money is on Britton or Iglesias. I think the sticker on Hand will be too high.
