Beer and Queso / Euro Report
« on: November 01, 2012, 10:52:22 am »
Took a trip with the missus to Europe (many thanks to Virtual Bob for excellent suggestions).  Some items:
1. Skip churches/cathedrals unless that's your thing.  Example: wasted most of an afternoon touring Melk Abbey when it would have been a helluva a lot more entertaining to drink beer in Melk.
2. On a same/similar note, I never have to see Baroque architecture again--I get it.  Schonbrunn Palace is MUCH more interesting when you get outside and walk about the magnicifent grounds.
3. Bratislava is cool.
4. The towns along the Danube in the Wachau Valley are worth the time.
5. Budapest: really need three days.
6. Prague: beautiful but would have preferred to have gone ten or fifteen years ago before it got overrun by Russian and Chinese hordes and every student group in Europe.  Speaking of, I think we've surrendered the "ugly" title to the Russians and Chicoms--we Americans are a distant third on the obnoxious scale against those professionals.
7. At the urging of the missus, we went to one of those dreadful concert things they have in Salzburg--you know, where a twelve or fifteen piece "orchestra" plays a sort of greatest hits retinue of Mozart but mostly Strauss.  You sit on hard, unconformtable chairs next to a big gal from up North somewhere and suffer through a bunch of syrupy stuff rendered by musicians who slam heroin and absinthe cocktails each night to forget they're doing this for a living.   I just kept thinking of how the Nazis dug Strauss and probably sat in the same hall pleased with themselves and all of the goddamn Baroque shit on the walls.
8. Czech and Slovakian women are very pretty.  Especially, when they stop every so often to adjust the tops of the black thigh high stockings they're wearing at which point I get a sharp rib punch thrown by the wife.
9. I drank a lot of beer but don't ask me for a report on it.  It came out of taps and was generally brown and tasted good.

10. Seasoned and business travellers know this--flying is for them.  If you are not one of them, you're consigned to steerage AKA coach AKA The Voyage of the Damned AKA here is your pathetic seat between the Pakistani family on one side and German family on the other side whose collective children and infants will scream SCREAM for the 10+ hour trip from Frankfurt to Houston.  Essentially, you're fucked and mean nothing to Lufthansa or whichever clip joint you decide to fly.   Someday, there's maybe a novel about this but right now the wounds are very, very fresh.  Also, a big shout out to United for delaying the last leg of that fun day for two and a half hours due to being "one flight attendant short" for the 26 minute flight from Houston to Austin which features no beverage service or really any reason to have anyone resembling more than a rhesus monkey dressed as an attendant (we eventually got the full compliment who splendidly fulfilled their function by sitting down for the entire flight).
11. It's cold in Europe, so bring your long underwear.  The Germans forgot to do that at Stalingrad and look what happened to those bastards--they now have to deal with pushy Russian tourists.

Will have a day to kill in Budapest and about three in Prague.  Any suggestions besides going on an absinthe binge?

Sounds like that maybe before the game, Snyder politely suggested that Happ should quit all that fucking nibbling around shit:

If you get a chance, watch Feherty's latest installment on the Golf Channel which features an hour talking with Ken Venturi.  Some great stories.
