Beer and Queso / Texas Flood: Water, water everywhere ...
« on: March 15, 2016, 08:41:59 am »
I guess I didn't realize the full impact of the flooding until yesterday afternoon, The Sabine River is essentially 10-15 miles wide right now in some places, from Toledo Bend south. The Neches is not as bad, but is out of its banks. The cfs at the salt water barrier just north of Beaumont was 80,000+ yesterday. The norm is around 10,000.
Apparently Interstate 10 has been closed at the TX-LA border this morning, due to flooding from the Sabine (which isn't due to crest until Saturday, I believe.) That ought to cause a nice little logistics nightmare.

Beer and Queso / RIP, Moe Green
« on: July 20, 2015, 12:41:15 pm »
Actually Alex Rocco, of course (1936-2015). Moe Green bought it in 1972 - in the coolest way possible, I thought then. Shot through the eyeball while lying on a massage table in Vegas, payback for standing up to Michael Corleone. I really liked his character.

I completely missed this last week; but I didn't think it should pass without mention.

Sad news, indeed. I hope Jaye P. Morgan and The Unknown Comic, et al, are still with us.

Beer and Queso / R.I.P. Bobby Keys 1943-2014

He had a lot to do with the coming to full fruition of the Stones darkest and most powerful blues/rock ambitions, on albums like Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main St.
Just a great, great player.

Interesting article: The Link
I think I underrated him, because I thought he was overrated. Maybe partly because he was a Yankee, and then Cub. He had a damn nice career, as far as I know untainted by PEDs.
I'd also forgot he came up as a 2B (more or less).

Beer and Queso / Friday Afternoon (Cheap) Beer Thread
« on: October 10, 2014, 12:52:16 pm »
Either out of necessity, or as a cheap thrill, sometimes some of us are compelled to go the economy route on our beer.
I don't mean it as "the worst beer you ever drank ... " Buckhorn, Schaeffer Light, Carling Black Label ... we've all been there a time or two. What I mean is a "cheap" beer you can tolerate in a pinch, maybe even like a little.
For me, there isn't much better after a long day working in the yard than walking up to the 7-11 and getting a couple of Bud Ice in the 22 0z. bottles, preferably right out of the ice tub. At $1.59 apiece, a really economic choice. It is light and refreshing and at least non-offensive. If the store is out of Ice, my backup is MGD in the 24 oz. bottles. Same price.

Beer and Queso / Meantime, Panama is a happy place

Isthmus Be The Place!
"A previous Gallup poll found Latin Americans in general and Panamanians in particular have the most upbeat attitudes, based on things such as smiling and laughing a lot and enjoying life.
Another recent poll found people in Panama had something to smile about, he says: They were the most likely in the world to say it was a good time to find a job, reflecting a growing economy – driven in part by a Panama Canal expansion under construction. In addition, an expatriate American known only as 'Señor Chuck' apparently relocated to the small Central American republic several years ago, and many Panamanians cited that fact alone as a reason for gran felicidad in their country ... I recently changed browsers and found in my favorites folder - to my pleasant surprise - some old threads I'd saved from SnS/OWA.
They are hardly a comprehensive collection (in my heart of hearts I still pine for the gone and apparently un-saved "Three Percenter" threads - there were two, I think - as much and with as much instensity as I do a long gone but well-remembered old girlfriend); and the ones I did save were done so selfishly ... I tended to save stuff I was at least peripherally involved in.
Still, if you have a little time, you may enjoy one or two of these.
