Beer and Queso / article on Stanford football S&C program
« on: October 02, 2013, 03:38:01 pm »
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1739903-how-to-build-a-bully-inside-the-stanford-football-strength-program

Quote
In the six years since Turley brought his strength and conditioning program to The Farm, as Stanford is known to many, the defense has cut the number of yards allowed per carry nearly in half, and the offense has more than tripled its production on the ground.
..snip..
Turley does not have some sort of magical formula, nor are his players putting up Zeus-like numbers in the weight room.

"I don’t care how much guys can bench squat or power clean," Turley said. "It has nothing to do with playing football. Football is blocking and tackling. It’s creating contact, avoiding contact and gaining separation if you are a skill guy on the perimeter. That’s football."

Fuji TV is rebooting Iron Chef http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-08-23/iron-chef-show-returns-to-japanese-tv

Always liked the Japanese version better. You can't get fresher than having your main ingredients still running around at the beginning of the show.

GM was bugging the other coaches box at the Superdome:
http://espn.go.com/chicago/story/_/id/7846290/new-orleans-saints-mickey-loomis-eavesdrop-opposing-coaches-home-games

Quote
NEW ORLEANS -- The U.S. Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of Louisiana was told Friday that New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis had an electronic device in his Superdome suite that had been secretly re-wired to enable him to eavesdrop on visiting coaching staffs for nearly three NFL seasons, "Outside the Lines" has learned.

Sources familiar with Saints game-day operations told "Outside the Lines" that Loomis, who faces an eight-game suspension from the NFL for his role in the recent bounty scandal, had the ability to secretly listen for most of the 2002 season, his first as general manager of the Saints, and all of the 2003 and 2004 seasons. The sources spoke with "Outside the Lines" under the condition of anonymity because of fear of reprisals from members of the Saints organization.

Talk Zone / Arm pain/problems
« on: April 26, 2011, 10:55:58 am »
I was refered to Eric Cressey for some mobility issues I have in my hips (trying to stay active in martial arts at age 48 while sitting at a desk all day for work is difficult). Cressey has an excellent DVD "Magnificent Mobility" for those of you who are stiffening up.

Cressey's main job, though, is as a S&C coach for baseball players up in New England. This post was on his blog today.

At least five wives have been forced to come face to face with mistresses whose existence was kept from them by their husbands, who have been trapped more than 2,300ft below since a cave in on August 5.
One miner has four women fighting over him in an effort to claim compensation offered to the families of those facing between three to four months underground until a rescue shaft can reach them.

Some are probably saying "uh, I think I will just stay down here and, uh, clean the place up a bit"

Talk Zone / Unassisted Triple Plays
« on: August 24, 2009, 12:47:06 pm »
I'm looking at the video of Bluntett's play here: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090823&content_id=6585864&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

and the story notes
Quote
It was just the second unassisted triple play to end a game. Tigers first baseman John Neun turned the other against the Indians on May 31, 1927.

The listing of unassisted triple plays has two by a first baseman. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/history/rare_feats/index.jsp?feature=unassisted_triple_plays

How can a first baseman turn an unassisted triple play? A double play is easy enough to see, but how does he get the third? Chase someone across the infield?

On hitting Bourn 2nd for the 1st time this season on Friday,

Cooper said. “Maybe it’s just that time. I don’t know. I’m just grasping to try to get some consistency with our lineup and the production.”

I'm a bit surprised that no one had commented on that yet, although I'm not exactly clear what to say myself. Maybe "yikes"? or "Jeez Wade, I do things at random too. Can I be skipper for a day? I promise to have Bourn lead off."

Beer and Queso / galveston dining
« on: June 18, 2008, 11:58:18 am »
We're going to be down on the island in a couple weeks. We're going to celebrate my wife's birthday a bit early while there, so what are some recommendations for good places? For her birthday dinner, $25 - $30 per plate (not including wine) is fine, though less is better of course. A couple other places in the $15 dollar range would be nice too for other meals.

Seafood is her preference, we also like Italian and French.

What do you all recommend?

"that a good sign for the Astros. They haven't had a good catcher in many years."

« on: August 15, 2007, 12:17:42 pm »
Erin looks too close to shore to blow up too much, but some of the long range tracks for Dean have it skirting south of Haiti and Cuba, and entering the gulf as a well organized cat 3, with gulf waters very hot.

What's the inside scoop? You had Rita nailed long before the NWS said anything.

Talk Zone / Red's Milton done for the year

CINCINNATI -- It was learned on Monday that injured Reds starting pitcher Eric Milton will have season-ending ligament replacement surgery on his problematic left elbow. A free agent at season's end, Milton has likely thrown his last pitch already for Cincinnati.
.....
Since signing a three-year, $25.5 million free agent contract with the Reds on Dec. 27, 2004, Milton has produced disastrous results. In the 66 starts after he inked that deal, the 31-year-old was 16-27 with a 5.83 ERA. In 2005, he allowed a club-record and National League-leading 40 home runs.

Quote:

The Blue Jays had an 8-0 lead, but Lilly was pulled in the third inning when the Athletics scored seven runs. Gibbons chewed out his pitcher, who refused to give him the ball.

I'd think giving up 7 runs in an inning is enough of a reason to get pulled.... And Gibbons obviously wasn't kidding when he challenged Hillenbrand to a fight.

A Hall of Fame pitcher, an honest-to-gosh legend, was talking last week about the evil of steroids, the shame of the game's whole chemical-cheating culture.

"We just want to get it out of baseball," he said, his white mustache dancing as he presumed to speak for old-timers everywhere. "To clean it up."

I might have automatically nodded along with this highly ethical stand if the man making it had been almost anyone except Gaylord Perry.
