Cool, thanks for letting me know. I assumed when it went through the list of ways to watch it did not let you stream to a PC. I'll probably work through the final season of Man in the High Castle, which dropped today, and then give For All Mankind a whirl.

This is the only AppleTV+ show that moved the needle for me, so I was excited to learn that I got a free subscription with my new iPhone 11. I haven't watched the show yet, though, because apparently I can only watch it ON my iPhone, and while the screen is larger than on my older phone, I'm not sure I want to invest 10 hours staring at my phone.

I have an older (Gen1?) AppleTV device but when I try to stream through it I get an error., so I assume it's not compatible. Same with my older Fire stick. And of course our relatively new Samsung smart TVs don't have the app - it's only available on certain Sony TVs.

I pitched once when I was in 6th grade. Not sure if I even got an out. I think I walked four guys and gave up a double off the fence to a guy that was so slow I later threw him out as a third baseman playing in shallow LF (obviously in Temple Youth Baseball in the 80s we were early adopters of the shift).

So yeah, I'm available, and it *would* be a pay increase. Give me a call, Jeff!

I gave myself last night to pout, and I did a lot of pouting from about the 8th inning until I fell asleep watching Peaky Blinders around 1am.

Today I look forward to the 2020 season. And I should probably put in a little effort toward finding a new job, as my old one ended yesterday afternoon.

Pretty sure DoubleDaves makes a frito pie pizza as one of their monthly specials. I've had their chili dog pizza (used to be the July pizza but wasn't this year) and it is vile and delicious.

Same boat, Waldo, and I simply cannot help it. Friday's game was brutal. I calmed down a little bit once they got some runs on the board, but those first few innings? Sheesh.

Saturday was a little easier because I had plenty of libations during the Texas game, and I got to meet our new puppy right before the game started. Nothing like an emotional support dog to assist with nerves.

Austin currently has a food truck and a brick and mortar of a Nashville Hot Chicken restaurant called Tumble22. I've eaten there probably 6 times in the last year, and it is absolutely amazing. If not the best fried chicken I've ever had, it's pretty damn close.

My current favorite meal in Austin. I typically eat there at least every 2-3 weeks.

I just keep remembering 2017, when Cleveland was the hottest thing going: 22 or whatever in a row in September, great pitching, etc, etc. And then they quickly and quietly slipped beneath the waves in the ALDS. They hit their cooling-off period at a very inopportune (for them) time.
Was it that or just a case of the Yankees playing great baseball? I honestly don't remember, because I don't think I watched a single game of that series. But I know the Yankees were a tough out in the ALCS.

Beer and Queso / Re: USWNT
« on: June 12, 2019, 10:47:45 am »
It's almost like many of the best female American athletes play soccer while many of the best male American athletes don't. Or something.

It's not just athletes. Our USMNT is not made up of bad athletes. They're just not as skilled at soccer as Europeans or Latin Americans. We have a population 4x the size of the reigning world champions. There are more than enough athletes to go around.

The best American soccer players at lower levels typically either score goals or play keeper. We've had plenty of those guys at the national level that were good enough for US Soccer to make a splash internationally. The USMNT struggles in the midfield and backfield because we do a poor job at developing those roles. Our soccer leadership is more concerned with getting power than developing a national system, and because of that we continue to fail.

Participation in youth soccer has exploded the past 20 years and ranks highest of all team sports in the US, but where other countries push these kids to academies and develop them from an early age, in the US we have a pay-to-play system and rely more on colleges to produce our top stars. It's not conducive to building a strong national team, regardless of the quality of athletes, yet the first thing anyone ever says is that to compete on the national level we need Lebron James out there.

The opinions on last night's episode appear to lean negative, and I get why, but I think it fit in with the show's general feel in a post-source material era. Benioff & Weiss have not shown that they have great storytelling chops - nor are they particularly strong writing dialogue - so the show works best as a spectacle, and in highlighting  individual character moments.

The spectacle was a bit muddied at time with the prevailing darkness, but the moments abounded:

Melisandre's fiery touch and the Dothraki Screamers charging into the darkness
Lyanna Mormont bringing down a giant
Sansa and Tyrion's shared hopelessness when all looked lost
Theon's and Jorah's deaths
Arya ninja-ing her way to the Night King

Some of it was silly, and at least 3-4 characters lived when they should have died, but it kept me on edge for the full 80+ minutes, and with both the music and several of the standout acting performances, I was satisfied.

Now what? A couple hundred survivors and two banged-up dragons are going to take down Cersei? That's a lot of plot armor.

The other wrench in timelines of books v. show is that everyone on the show started off several years older than in the books. Dany was something like 13 in the books when it started. Jon Snow was 14 or 15, I think.

Marvel also had the foresight to develop an outline for all of these individuals to build a cohesive story and universe, as opposed to Kennedy, who told Abrams and Johnson to take the world's most valuable film franchise and essentially enact the creative writing exercise where one person starts a story and another one picks it up and so on... except it wasn't an exercise.

the flat ground/flat bat app is going to create new opportunities for players who don't have the money to go to showcases, don't have the money to join elite travel teams, don't live in the right part of the country to get exposure or who want to play more than one sport.  10-15 years down the road when we have a more diverse American talent base in baseball, I think his work will get a great deal of credit.

Yeah, the work he's doing there is an incredible public service.

It’s always been clear the Force isn’t purely a matter of inheritance. I’m just saying Johnson was trying to reiterate the theme expressed in Luke’s little speech: “[the] Force does not belong to the Jedi. To say that if the Jedi die the light dies is vanity.”

ETA: this is perfectly consistent with Lucas’ stories. A central premise of the prequel trilogy is that the Jedi Order was a decaying institution and was out of touch with the nature of the Force.

I looked at it as being similar to the Potterverse, where you had both established families with pure blood lineages that go back generations, ala the Malfoys and Blacks, as well as those filthy mudbloods that sprang up out of nowhere.

Agree with the sentiment that Solo was unnecessary, but it's been the most fun of the new movies. If they do a sequel I will be there on opening day.

Also agree that Lucasfilm f'ed up royally by not developing a full outline ahead of time to ensure a cohesive story. I simply cannot believe that they paid $4B dollars for the most beloved franchise in movie history and decided to wing it. It's like that old game you'd play during your creative writing class where one person starts a story and then someone else picks it up and adds a little before throwing it to the next person.

Exactly.  Last night I was wondering if they'll implement some rule about stepping off the rubber or hitters calling time and whatnot.  Last year it was all the mound visits, so they put in the mound visit limits.  We'll see.  But it definitely is slowing the game down.

I get pace of play concerns in the regular season. In the middle of July I want to go to bed, not watch an A's game drag on until 12:30am.

But in the postseason? Where every pitch is critical and a series can swing on a seeing-eye single? I don't understand the complaints. Are people baseball fans or are they not?

This American Life, has some great stories
Men in Blazers is enjoyable during the EPL season

Literally listening to this right now (on Ep 6). I was a very casual soccer person at the time but I recognize a lot of the names and I remember that World Cup.

I'm not a huge podcast person but I try to squeeze them in when I think about it.

Stuff You Should Know is a great one that requires no real commitment. I just check in on the topics that interest me.

American History Tellers  takes a documentary-like approach to historical events. I've only listened to their four-part series on the Space Race.

The Ringer has a bunch of podcasts but I'll usually check out the Rewatchables when they do a movie I liked.

If you were ever a huge West Wing fan then The West Wing Weekly is a fun way to revisit the series.

Skeptics Guide to the Universe can be interesting (they cover science topics), but my attention span for podcats usually wanes after an hour so I don't listen as much anymore.

StarTalk (Neil deGrasse Tyson) would be great if he didn't have that awful comedian sidekick Chuck Nice, who adds nothing to the show. I had to tap out on it because of him.

It definitely works sometimes in hockey, though I have no data on the actual success rate, and I am certain it's far lower than the percentage of empty net goals surrendered.

I can't remember seeing it in soccer before, at least not with the keeper that far forward. Mexico used to move their keeper up to midfield back in the 90s (forget his name) and sometimes substitute in net so that he could attack full-time late in games, IIRC.

Beer and Queso / Re: 2018 Music Thread
« on: June 21, 2018, 06:49:42 pm »
That sounds like something I would like... will check it out. Thanks, Sphinx!

I've spent some time with some of the suggestions on this thread and have been fond of both Parquet Courts and Snail Mail. I did *not* like Neko's new album, which was disappointing because I typically enjoy her stuff.

I've had a love-hate with Parquet Courts going back to about 2012. They have some great tracks on this new album, but I don;t know many other bands that can make a 2-3 minute song a labor to get through. They often fall into a formula that gets very repetitive very quickly.  Pronounced Bass line... light-to-moderate rhythm guitar... shout-speak-singing... lather-rinse-repeat. And it works a lot of the time (Before the Water Gets Too High) and sometimes it's awful (Violence). Then they come out with some more melodic fare like Mardi Gras Beads or Total Football (which keeps getting better every time I listen to it).

Anyhow...

I'd put both of those in Top 5 at the year's halfway point, along with Courtney Barnett and the odd-yet-delightful whimsy from Sydney Gish, some random northeastern singer-songwriter I read about in Pitchfork back in January. I'm inclined to give the last spot to Dr. Dog out of loyalty - they've been one of my favorite bands for 10+ years, and this newest release is the closest thing they've done in years to the record that made me a fan all those years ago.

Harry Kane came up big for the Brits today.

I know they were only playing Panama (a team that qualified over the US, of course) but Belgium looked sensational. I am surprised that they didn't put 3-4 more goals on the board. KDB is one of my favorites so I'd love to see them make a deep run.

Teams I'm cheering for, in order:

Argentina
Iceland
England
Belgium

None of those four are going to win, but Argentina or Belgium could make a run.

Meanwhile Panama will get stomped in all three games and that will really take the sting out of the US not qualifying. Sigh.

Great resource for brushing up on some of the guys you may not know, especially if, like me, you really just watch EPL and Champions League.

« on: June 12, 2018, 10:58:59 am »
I did not see the game because I was watching Texas, but I Justice weighed in yesterday on Twitter, FWIW...

Quote
Dallas Keuchel, part 1. Never seen @kidkeuchy as frustrated as he was on Sunday. @Statcast reveals his start may have been the unluckiest of the season in the majors:
--3 of 13 hits (23.1%) qualified as hard-hit, which is ridiculously bad luck.
  (continued)

Quote
.@KidKeuchy, part 2:
--Overall 11th-lowest rate of hard contact among any pitcher with 20 batted balls .
--Opponenets 13 for 25 (.525) on Sunday. Expected BA based on contact and launch angle was .280. That 240-point gap largest of season of 1,700 Ps facing 20+ batters

He seems to lean toward "unlucky."

Further, most of the national guys I've seen comment have taken a very bullish approach toward Keuchel.

Looking at his season to date he only had one bad start in his first 11, and now three stinkers in a row.

I think I probably lean more toward the "he'll turn it around" camp (though it does concern me that if he's not hitting his spots things fall apart very quickly), but at the same time I wish he'd keep his mouth shut. He makes it difficult to cheer for sometimes.

All that said... if they wanted to give him a couple of weeks on the DL to reset I wouldn't feel the least bit bad to see McHugh come in and get a chance to start. And if the postseason started today - admittedly a nonsensical and mostly irrelevant hypothetical - Keuchel should not be in the rotation, and maybe not even on the roster.

That's impressive. I'm usually good for 5-6 books a year, and my reading list is already longer than I'm likely to get to in the next decade, but I set a goal of 5K pages or 12 books for 2018. 40% of the way through the year I am at... about 1,000 pages, and only two books read (and one of those was re-reading Ready Player One before I saw the movie).

Particularly loved this comment from a former teammate of theirs at UCLA:

Quote
“I keep up with Cole, and I know that he’s killing it,’’ said Decker, 31, now a first baseman with Class AAA Reno in the D-backs organization. “I like him a lot. But I can’t tell you I know Bauer. I spoke with Bauer one time, and I said, 'I’ll never do that again. I’m good. I got my fill for a lifetime.'

“So, I don’t want to say I’m rooting for Cole (Sunday), but I’m completely rooting for Cole. I would love to see Cole strike out 21 batters. And all on high spin-rate sliders.’’

I don't remember how I found OWA, but I think it was in 2004, probably from Waldo, who was the only other person posting on Hornfans.com that hadn't given up on the team multiple times that summer. "Read more, post less," has been my mantra, and almost every day I find myself learning things I didn't know from the collective baseball expertise this site offers.  Attending Opening Day with this group has become a constant , and I've even been lucky enough to forge real-life friendships.

It must have been the bottom of the 8th when I mustered up enough gumption to defy the BBGs and text Jim, suggesting we go have a celebratory beer down the street,  "if something good were to happen" (we live about four blocks apart). He suggested I come over there and followed it up with the simple-yet-direct "come on." I got to see the final two outs with Jim and Mark, shared numerous high fives and hugs, and even got to partake in a few "special occasion" beers Mark had been saving for such an event.

OWA is truly my "baseball family," as someone else mentioned. I've been waiting 40 years for this and I know many of you have me beat by decades. Reading the stories, seeing the reactions, and knowing that so many of us share the same passion for this team, makes it that much more special.  Thank you to all for making this place the best Astros site around.

Who knows what will happen, but this team seems to thrive when people underestimate them and I'd prefer they go into the ALCS with the talking heads picking against them.

FWIW... on MLBXM today Hinch said they told Verlander yesterday morning that they were looking at him as a bridge to Giles and planned to put in Giles for two innings. Once Sale entered they decided that the rain wasn't going to be a factor and while he wanted to start Verlander clean in an inning, Hinch didn't want to wait. This was all a possibility, Hinch said, because they had confidence in Keuchel as a Game 5 starter back in Houston.

Yes.  If no team claims the player after three business days, he can be traded normally, optioned to the minors, or released.  If he does get claimed the teams have two business days to work out a trade.

If a player gets claimed the team that put him on waivers can also immediately pull him back.

Talk Zone / Re: Trade Deadline 2017

Of course they put Verlander on waivers. Half the league gets put on waivers. I would guess he clears because who is going to take the chance on claiming him? All the Tigers have to do is say "he's yours" and you're the proud owner of that albatross of a contract, albeit without giving up so much as a bag of balls. If he does clear then maybe you can still work on a deal.

FWIW "at least a month away" is consistent with the original prognosis of 6-8 weeks.  Surgery was on July 19.  6-8 weeks would be August 30 - September 13.

And Correa, of course, says  "I feel like I'll be back sooner than expected, so hopefully I can accomplish that. Everything is turning out really good."

The first week of September would be a very good thing. I was afraid he wouldn't be back until late in the month, with just a week, maybe two, to get his rhythm back.

Talk Zone / Re: Trade Deadline 2017
« on: July 31, 2017, 11:52:58 pm »
My thoughts, for whatever they're worth:
- other teams improved themselves more than Houston did.
- other teams (especially in the AL) NEEDED to do more than Houston did
- none of us know how close Houston was to getting a guy like Briton (close, if you believe certain reports)
- it's unfair to say Luhnow did "nothing"
- the huge lead is not an issue to tout, iMO, beyond the fact that it gets you to October; the goal is still to win in the playoffs
- nothing about that means that the Astros cannot still win in the playoffs
- if either DK or LMJ are not healthy come October it may not matter anyway

There's too much extreme "hot take" crap out there, IMO. The season didn't end today and nothing is guaranteed because the team is pacing toward 100 wins.

So with all of that said... Let's go win the whole fucking thing.

Great ballpark! The one time I went I really didn't get a chance to do much outside of the park, because it was delayed by rain and I didn't want to Uber all the way into town and it get called, but I loved almost everything about the place. Plus it was the cheapest good ticket I've ever bought... $28 for four rows off the field on the 1st base side, about midway from the dugout to the fence.

My only complaints were (minor) the hot dog was lousy, and (not as minor) I could not fathom why they chose to not put a roof on it. It was 42 degrees and after about 4-5 innings we relocated to the heated open bar above the left field corner. That was a great vantage point though, and they had a lot of taps. I do want to go back when it's warmer.

Hypothetical: If DeGrom is on the market do you give up a Bregman/Tucker, Martes, Fisher, Throw-in package for him? Not sure that would even come close to the Mets' asking price, but since we're spit-balling...

I'd love to go after Stroman or Archer, and I think you gladly pay a high price for either of those guys, but I don't think either are going to be on the market for at least another two weeks, barring a disastrous second half start for their respective teams.

Baseball Stars! That game consumed I can't say how many hours of my youth. Did you ever figure out the trick where you could create teams of essentially perfect players? Me, Spiers for Hall of Fame (who used to post here), and his little brother used to play tournaments. For some reason that trick--or the way we figured out to do it--entailed beaning the Lovely Ladies team until they mercy ruled our team in the first. Which doesn't make any sense to me either.
Yeah, I think Nintendo Power had that little cheat. It's been so many years at this point I don't remember the details so well, but I know we had a rule that no one could be the American Dreams.

My dad was an Astros fan from the time of the Colt 45s, having been a Yankees fan prior (his dad was also a Yankees fan). He pretty much raised me from to love the Astros and the Longhorns, and I have vague memories of checking out the Temple Telegram each day as a young child (6? 7?) so that I could look at the box score/standings. I don't remember if we had cable at the time, but I don't think the Astros were ever on tv in the mid-80s, anyway. At least not on channels we had then. It probably wasn’t until the early 90s, when we finally got HSE, or whatever variation it was in the pre-Fox Sports regional era,  that I regularly watched games.

I think I may have gone to the Dome as a young kid, but I’m not completely sure. My aunt lived in Spring and we would visit them during summer vacation some years, because they were rich and had a huge house with a pool, and it was like going to a resort for us. Dad claimed that my uncle’s company had built Craig Reynolds’ house, but I have no idea if that was true. Dad had a penchant for hyperbole when we wasn’t making things up altogether. If anyone knows Craig Reynolds I’d love to get a confirmation one way or the other. Anyway, it wasn’t until the summer before my senior year of HS (1994) that I remember actually going to the Dome. We either saw them play the Cubs or the Giants - the other was the following summer before I started college. We sat in the nosebleeds, of course, but what a sight the Astrodome was to behold.

That 1986 season was much like the 1983 Longhorns season for me – vivid memories, no doubt colored by stories I would read and highlights I would watch at a later date. I can tell you a lot about that team and lament the near miss, but I have no idea how much nine year-old me actually witnessed at the time. I do remember trying to recreate them on the Nintendo game Baseball Stars a few years later and infuriating my buddy Rick by giving Glenn Davis a max power rating. “He’s the Big Bopper,” I argued.

The 90s really cemented my fandom. I was able to really watch games on tv, and 1400 in Temple carried them on the radio as well, so on non-tv nights dad and I would huddle around the radio some evenings to listen to Milo hand out blue stars and advertise for Ruggles. Astros baseball and Longhorn football were one of the few things I had in common with my dad, and in his later years those two topics were about the only thing we ever talked about. Should that day we’re waiting for ever actually come, I look forward to laying a “world champions” hat on his grave and telling him about how our boys finally won a World Series.

Knox... that is also my favorite Soundgarden song (narrowly edging out "Rusty Cage")... but the whole album is so good (though admittedly MTV/radio killed Black Hole Sun for me two decades ago). "Fell on Black Days" and "Superunknown" are also stand outs for me.

Am I just not remembering all of the love Correa has shown to Jeter over the years?

Also, these Root Sports commercials with Astros "fans" makes me a little embarrassed to be an Astros fan.
I miss "fat Tony" telling us how Colby Ramus was the best player on the team.

Not sure where they found such a misfit collection of hobos and dipshits.

I'm with EC on FJM. I've tried hard because a buddy of mine is a huge fan, but I just do not like anything that guy has done (solo). I don't like his voice or his lyrics or his songwriting. Not in a "I can't believe people like him" way, but he does nothing at all for me.

Spoon and Real Estate are both bands I like a lot but I haven't spent a lot of time with either new album.

I like the new New Pornographers album a lot, though it took a few trips through it to click.

I struggled to find much that I liked last year. Whitney was by far my favorite with the new Head and the Heart firmly second. Dr. Dog released an album via Bandcamp that I thought was good - much better than the remastered demo compilation from earlier in the year. Hamilton Leithauser and Rostam would probably round out the stuff I really liked. Anything else in a top ten would only be because everything else was more underwhelming.

I did not like Car Seat Headrest much at first but I've tried to give it another chance lately and it's not bad. I tried to get into Parquet Courts the second time around and found it as difficult as the first album from a few years ago. And I thought new albums from some bands I generally like (Local Natives, DBT, J Cole, Kanye, Bon Iver, Avett Brothers) ranged from "meh" to garbage. I am hoping 2017 is a better year.

I absolutely loved Star Wars, Empire and ROJ.  My christmas as a kid were filled with opening various SW related toys.

I, II, III just never interested me.  Never went to the movies to see them, tried watching them at home, but I don't think I made it through any of them.    Am I missing something by not seeing them?  They don't seem very necessary to understanding the plots of R1 thru Force Awakens.

I find that fascinating. I also was a crazed SW kid and when the PT came out I could not have been more excited. I probably saw all of the 3-4 times each in the theater. I even convinced myself for a time after Menace that Jar Jar was NOT the worst thing in movie history.

Eventually I adopted the more prevalent opinion that the trilogy was a complete disaster, save for a few moments here and there (the aforementioned Qui Gon/Obi Won scene with Darth Maul, for example). If I see them on TBS or Spike or whatever I'll watch a few minutes, if nothing else is on, but when I finally persuaded my wife to watch the first three last year I didn't bother trying to get her to continue with the prequels, because I didn't want to sit through 9 hours of disappointing schlock.

In general I think you can disregard the prequels altogether and everything else is fine - R1 included. Perhaps some day Disney will give the prequels the "Thrawn" treatment and de-canonize them (or just consider them as irrelevant as the Ewok-centric movies that came out in the late 80s/early 90s), and then someone else can take a shot at telling a more coherent origin story. I suspect that the one-off anthology films will inevitably tackle pre-prequels characters/content anyway, so you could almost use it all as a soft re-boot.

So this would indicate that the decrepit old man who implores Luke to tell his sister he was right about him was in the ballpark of, what, 45?

Yeah. I have read some of the more ardent fanboys say that all the life support and such needed to keep him going after Mustafar aged him considerably. But ardent fanboys have been known to make mistakes. From time to time.

The Red Sox are in the first WC position right now 76-61 (.555 win %). Assuming they finish the year at that percentage they'll win 90 games. Baltimore and Detroit are both 75-62 (.547), pacing to 89 wins.

In the four years since adding the second wild card it has required 93, 92, 88 ans 86 wins.

If I am doing the math correctly, then...

9-4 puts them at 80 wins
8-5 puts them at 79 wins
7-6 puts them at 78 wins
6-7 puts them at 77 wins

I'll ignore 5-8 or worse because I think any such scenario leaves them dead in the water.

The final 16 all come against division foes

7 v. LAA (4H/3A; 11-1 in 2016)
6 v SEA (3 H/3A; 8-5 in 2016)
3 v. OAK (3A; 10-6 in 2016)

So to get to 90 wins, which seems like it should result in a playoff spot, they'll need...

10-6 if starting at 80 wins
11-5 if starting at 79 wins
12-4 if starting at 78 wins
13-3 if starting at 77 wins

The first two of those four feel very "doable." The last two do not feel impossible.

Obviously with the pitching woes going .500+ on the current swing is a tall order, but Baltimore has their own pitching woes, as well as 7 v BOS, and 3 each against TOR and DET. Outside of the 7 v BAL, Boston has 6 v TOR and 7 v NYY, who I don't suspect are going to roll over for their biggest rival. The Tigers have 3 v BAL, 7 v CLE, and 3 v KC (but also 7 v MIN). I really don't see two teams running away from the pack over the next few weeks, so if the Astros can get even serviceable pitching and keep the bats going they have a shot.

During this 1-7 stretch, he has gone .179/.281/.214.  And he needs to play better defense.

Basically, only Altuve, Rasmus, and White are holding up their ends of the bargain.

Springer is 9 for his last 24 (6 games) w/ 3 HRs and 3 doubles, to go with plus-defense. I don't put him in the problem camp.

Talk Zone / Re: Carter a short-timer?
« on: August 15, 2015, 12:44:27 am »
Stros average a bit over 4.3 runs per game.  If you say they split the games where they allow 4 runs since you can't score 4.3 runs (they're 13-9 in those, so say they go 11-11) If they scored exactly that, they'd be 70- 45.  I just took a quick and basic look at the numbers, but at least for this year's Stros consistency it seems would be better.

Their record when scoring 4 or more is 52-9

They've yet to win a 1-0 game this year, 0-19 when scoring only 1.  2-10 with 2R, 8-9 with 3.

That's meaningless in a vacuum. Where do other top AL teams compare? Because I looked at their per-game scoring a month ago and concluded that outside of Toronto, neither the Yankees or Tigers (only better scoring teams than Houston at the time) were demonstratively "more consistent." By that I mean significantly more 3+ run games and/or fewer times shutout. Sure, you would like to consistently score a good amount of runs per game. And maybe the numbers over the last month show that the Astros have considerably fallen behind in this arena. But the fact is that they still have scored a shitload of runs, and the season is far from over,

237
Congrats!

Something More than Free has a few great songs on it, but my initial opinion is that it isn is as strong as some of his earlier stuff. I wouldn't call that a knock on the new album as much as a testament to how much I enjoy his full catalog, or the possibility that a song I have been lukewarm about for years will hit me out of nowhere, and - BAM - go into heavy rotation (most recent example: "The Last Song I Will Write," off of the first 400 Unit album in 2009, which never stood out to me until earlier this year after an oh-by-the-way comment from a buddy of mine).

I agree that Tags is an over-tweeter, but if someone is going to do that I suppose I would prefer to read about the Astros more than most other things.

I personally take the "read more, tweet less" approach and I wish that more people would do that when they have very little to actually say, but I think Twitter can be a great outlet for news and entertainment. The rush to make the most clever comment during a ballgame can be a beating, but there are a few that do it quite well.

Probably only among older folks who remember the heyday of El Rancho when Matt was alive and it was downtown. There weren't that many Mexican restaurants in Austin when it opened and its' location to the capitol and U.T. made it convenient. Coach Royal, LBJ and many other powerbrokers were regulars and put it on the gastronomical map. My kids wouldn't be caught dead there.

This fall marks 20 years in Austin for me. I have never been to Matt's.

No.  My experience has been that the AT&T store is much, much quicker, and easier to access.  You zip, you zip out with a new iPhone in 15 minutes.  If you're absolutely convinced that you need some sort of advice from the store employee, the Apple store clerk will likely know more about his/her product.  But not much.

Plus, I find "Lilly", the Uzbekistani AT&T girl to be smoking hot.  In the say way Andy finds Flo from Progressive Insurance.

She does have a certain charm to her. If you're into juvenile, sometimes gut-busting funny HBO comedies, she has a bit role as one of the girlfriends (to the tall guy that played Bill on Freaks and Geeks).

After reading HH's post I checked my phone and saw 55 GB of usage and had to compose myself for a moment trying to think of how to explain a pending $500 cell phone bill.

I have yet to find a beer that's too hoppy for my taste.  My only gripe with the craft beer explosion is the alcohol content.  I like to drink more than one beer a night, and a pint of barley wine is not conducive to that preference.

In fact, other than fruit-based beers, the only type of beer I don't like is brown ale, as it is just dishwater with (or maybe without) a head.  Now, there are plenty of brands that I don't like, who make horrible versions of types of beer that I do like, but that's not the same thing (obviously).

I'm the same way... not a fan at all of brown ales, but I can get into most other styles. I'm not as big of an IPA guy as I used to be, and with that said I'll also note that the "hop explosion" hit its peak a few years ago and I don't think craft beer is all about over-hopping every kind of beer the way it used to be.

If anything, the more recent irritating trend is aging everything in bourbon barrels, which I do not like. If I want whiskey, I'll drink whiskey.

There is plenty of great craft beer out there and a lot of variety. It's also not hard to find. On top of HEB/Whole Foods/Central market in Austin (and 4-5 solid craft-focused convenience stores) we have at least a dozen craft bars, so I'm sure Houston quadruples that.

-2016 Copa Americas, in the United States! Followed by the Olympics, followed by the start of WC Qualifying

Terrible swing and hit, but just effective enough.  Rough way to go out for the horns.

Yeah, but is there really a GOOD way to go out? Hard to be upset at what that team did. One of the guys on Shaggy posted a side-by-side comparison of more than a dozen team stats between 2013 and 2014 and they were better, but they weren't a ton better this season. This team just had a lot of fight and peaked at a great time. That was a run all Texas fans can (and should) be proud of.

You need to lift your head from the numbers and watch the games.  It would be an insult to amateurs to describe England as amateurish.  Piss poor defending, zero marking, giving the ball away all over the pitch, static and clueless in attack.  And that's just the so-called experienced leader Steve Gerrard.  No one else was any better.

But, yes, Italy running the table and England beating Costa Rica would see them through.

Nothing more than a comment on possibility, thought I didn't think they looked horrible in the bits I saw today, save for the mental snafu that allowed Suarez to get behind the defense for the game-winner.

If you're ever in Austin, I just got a pastrami Reuben from Melvin's Deli Comfort, a trailer on 53rd and Duval. They smoke their pastrami over apple wood and it's fall-apart tender with a beautiful smoke flavor. They cure their own meats, make their own dressings, sauces and sauerkraut, get their breads from a local bakery and their cheeses and vegetables locally as well. The price was the same as that at the ball park, but the product was light years better and they're consistently great - I've been buying their food for a couple of years now.
Is that the red trailer? The bartender at Workhorse told me they made the best sandwiches in Austin, but I have yet to get by there.

Agreed with HH. I think that the conversion rate of a 50+ yard FG this season was 67% or thereabouts. As you move closer it went up to almost 100% for FGs inside of 30 yards.

Kicking has been part of the game forever and I don't think it should be abolished (the NFLPA would probably not take kindly to it), but there is precedence for increasing the difficulty. Goalposts have been narrowed and tees have been eliminated. Right now it's a non-play that adds very little to the game, IMO.

My 2013 list... for what it's worth, I was bad about getting into full albums, and most of them didn't get more than a few listens. I have some songs that I tagged in Spotify as "best of" early in the year that I cannot remember at all now.

1. Fitz and the Tantrums; More than Just a Dream
2. Jason Isbell; Southeastern
3. The Head and the Heart; Let's Be Still
4. Vampire Weekend; Modern vampires of the City
5. Local Natives; Hummingbird
6. Foxygen; We are the Creators of Long-Ass Pretentious Album Titles
7. Dr. Dog; B-Room
8. Phosphorescent; Muchacho
9. Cults; Static
10. Kanye; Yeezus

Honorable Mention
Joy Formidable; Wolf's Law
Guards; In Guards we Trust
Ra Ra Riot; Beta Love
Shout Out Louds, Optica
Dawes, Stories Don't End
The National; Trouble Will Find Me
What Made Milwaukee Famous; You Can't Fall Off the Floor
Jay Z; Magna Carta...Holy Grail
Neko Case; The Worse Things Get
Deer Tick; Negativity
Avett Brothers; Magpie and the Dandelion
Wild Child; The Runaround
Kurt Vile; Walkin on a Pretty Daze
White Denim; Corsicana Lemonade
Jake Bugg; Shangri La

Quite a few of the Honorable Mentions are albums I just got around to finally listening to recently.

I'll try to add favorite songs later, but as I go through my Spotify lists I see a ton of albums where I know I liked certain songs but I didn't flag them. It'll give me a good chance to re-visit some stuff I forgot about.

Haven't really watched it the past few years, HH, but that's because I think college basketball is borderline unwatchable. It does still seem to crown a highly ranked team almost every year, though. Maybe 68 is too many, but a lower percentage of NCAA bball teams make the tourney than do the NBA or NHL playoffs, though I know both of those are criticized for their all-inclusiveness.

I'm also far from a BCS hater, and I think it has done an admirable job of giving some level of credibility to the "MNC." I would eventually like to see the college football playoff include 12 teams, have home fields through the semifinals, and give the top four seeds byes, but obviously any system is going to have flaws. Show me a league outside of EPL that doesn't. MLB probably comes closest with the new balanced schedule, the the wild card play-in is pretty silly, IMO, as are best-of-5 WC series (though to a lesser extent).

Beer and Queso / Re: Texas bowl teams
« on: January 02, 2014, 12:48:53 pm »
The NFL only plays one game in February, and college football knows it cannot compete with the NFL.

But looking at this as rationally as I am comfortable doing, given that we're discussing college football:

A. No one in charge seems particularly eager to even expand the field beyond 4 for the foreseeable future (i.e., the current contract, which runs through 2026).
B. Even if the money dictated that expansion is in everyone's best interests, the current structure's latest championship game occurs on January 13, and it's only that late because they have determined that Monday night is the best night for a title game (see: "not wanting to compete with the NFL," I assume) and are comfortable with an 11-day gap from semifinal to final. In keeping that same general process, opening playoff games on 13/31 and 1/1, subsequent rounds starting on the first Monday that is six or more days after the semifinals, and continuing on from there) it would take a 32-team field to push it into February.
C. Avoiding head-to-head competition with the NFL - especially during the playoffs - would require Thursday/Friday/early Saturday games, which are fine for the regular season, but probably don't bode well for attendance and tv ratings in January.

I get that pessimism is your thing and all, but this particular "fear" is misplaced, IMO.

375
Beer and Queso / Re: Texas bowl teams
« on: January 02, 2014, 10:18:07 am »
I agree with HH about the bowl games. How long will it be before college football plays a game in February? I predict that the playoff system will drag it out that long one day.

That would require a 32-team playoff, and I don't see that happening. When they eventually go beyond 4 teams I would think they'd just change the bracket structure to play the first round(s) at home sites prior to Christmas.

He took a team nobody expected much from all the way to the de facto conference championship game.  Why should he quit now?

Revisionist history. He took a team nobody expected anything from after two early season blowout losses to the de fact conference championship game. Before the season started, Mack himself was calling this a team that could win the Big 12 or more. This was also the culmination of his "three year plan," after the 2010 season, in which he was supposed to have returned Texas to prominence.

I'd say that 12 losses (likely 13 in a few weeks) in that span doesn't accomplish the goal HE set. Time to go.

I wouldn't say he throws them "very well." He has thrown some outstanding balls (two against OU, which probably leads to the "he throws the deep ball well" comments), but he misses them about as often.

McCoy's biggest issue, IMO, is that he consistently throws off his back foot, even without pressure, and it accentuates his arm strength and accuracy.

I think he lacks the kind of talent one would expect from the QB of a top D1 program, and makes a lot of poor decisions. But... I admire his toughness, his effort and his attitude. He seems to command the respect of his teammates, and he gets every last ounce of production out of his physical abilities. I, too, am done nitpicking and criticizing every little thing. hats off to him, and let's hope the Horns can keep it going for three more weeks.

I've only been to 5: PETCO, MMPUS, Wrigley, AT&T and Rangers. I like them all, but the have their pros and cons.

PETCO - Actually, no cons on this one. We sat right above the Astros BP on the RF line. Great seats, great weather and great food. Plus the Astros won.
AT&T - Giants fans were assholes, and I didn't like being up under the overhang down the RF line, but the food and beer was great. Plus the Astros won.
MMPUS - I think we're all familiar with it. Food is meh, but I think the seats are pretty good, no matter where you are.
Wrigley - Much like the Rose Bowl, it's hard to discount the history of the place, though the stadium itself is kind of a dump. And the fans are obnoxious. But Wrigleyville is a fun little area and I thought their hot dogs were the best I've had.
Rangers - I like the ballpark; it's really well designed. But there's no atmosphere outside of the stadium, it's balls hot for the majority of the season, and they still play that stupid The Natural theme in 2013.

Springer made a nice read and run on a deep fly to the LCF gap Tuesday night in Round Rock. Of course the ball popped out of his glove, but I chalk that up to him short-arming, due to a charging Justin Maxwell. As Austro noted, "he wouldn't have to worry about Carter getting in his way."

His two HRs were absolute shots. One cleared the 375 sign and landed on the germ, just shy of the scoreboard. The other landed on top of the green barn in dead center. The triple was a frozen rope to right center.

We didn't see the radar gun display until after both homers so I can't speak to what, if anything, was on the pitches, but the first was a FB, I believe.

Singleton had a pretty rough AB late against a submariner.

That's funny, I just clicked on this album 30 minutes ago.  I really liked the first song, but like you, got bored and switched to something else.

Also boring is the new National, but I'm determined to like it so I'll probably listen another couple dozen times or so this week to make myself fall in love with it.

Not boring?  Vampire Weekend's new one.  I hated Contra and thought their self-titled one was a one-shot cutesy album.  This is far, far better than both, and I had zero expectations going in.  It's a bit more, I don't know, out there?  Not as tightly spun?  Either way, it's great shit.  Hannah Hunt and Unbelievers stand out to me.  The rest is great, too.

Unbelievers and Step form a great 1-2 punch for me. I am really liking this record. It's a nice move forward from their previous stuff (which I did actually like).

Also like Phoenix. It grows on me the more I listen. Still haven't heard The National yet.

While I am intrigued by the possibility of building a basketball (multi-purpose?) arena in Mueller, I can't imagine how that would work. Neither Airport nor 51st are particularly convenient to navigate when traffic is bad, and with the town center and retail area already planned would they even have the space? Maybe if the urban rail succeeds and car traffic is not the only means for getting there, it might make more sense.

(3)  MMPUS has the worst customer service I've ever seen.  When the park is half full there should not be long lines at the concession stands.  I want to give you $8 for some nachos.  Is it too much to ask for the chips not to be stale and the queso be hot?  Can I get a $5 hot dog that wasn't cooked the day before?  Can an usher actually provide decent directions?  Can the bathrooms be clean?

On OD I went to get some over-priced nachos, because I'm a sucker for processed cheese, chili made of dog food, and enough jalapenos to give me an ulcer. The kid fixing the nachos looked late HS/early college, and on top of being slower than Carlos Lee legging out a grounder, he wasn't the friendliest chap.

When I got to the front he informed me that they were out of chili. I asked for extra cheese as a substitute. He said no. I asked why not? He said he couldn't; he'd lose his job. I told him that made no sense. He stood his ground. I asked to speak to a manager and he said there wasn't one close. After about two more minutes of arguing he sensed that I wasn't leaving without extra cheese or a manager and gave me a half-dollop more.

I got back to my set to find that the chips were stale and the cheese was lukewarm.

Slightly different levels of diminishing.   Notre Dame went away for 20 years until recently and attendance and TV ratings soared during that time.  Heck, in the early 90's, UT was practically giving away tickets at H-E-B for $5 in order to get their attendance to 60K.  Now, the 100,000th ticket still costs you $40 or more.

Maybe once per year. For a conference game you're dropping at least $80.

At points, Ash looks like he's showing signs of pulling it together, and then he appears to regress a bit. Still, a win is a win. Okafur is a man out there! That was one of the better individual defensive efforts I've seen in some time, although the rest of the defense is pretty meh.

Not sure what you mean by "showing signs." He showed as far back as Ole Miss and Oklahoma State that he was capable of making plays downfield and leading scoring drives under pressure. Since then he has also showed inconsistent and erratic play. I don't personally think last night showed anything other than he played well in the second half.

He's a true sophomore QB playing behind an O-Line that is average at best. He has talent to work with at the skill positions, yet the offense's default more often than not was to play conservatively, and I don't know whether that was due to a lack of confidence in his ability or just a bizarre dogma that "football should be played that way" (I suspect the latter more than the former).

Next season Texas will have a junior in Ash and redshirt freshmen in Overstreet and Brewer. I don't personally believe that Ash earned the right to automatically be named starter - not that my opinion matters - but if he shows anything remotely close to the level of improvement from 12 to 13 that he did from 11 to 12, then he'll win the job and probably have a good season.

I don't begrudge them for trying to make more money off their content.  I don't have access to their financial statements, so I don't know how bad off they are.  But, if they're making money off the myriad advertisements on each webpage, are they really giving content away or are they selling it to a third party, instead of the reader?  It's a different business model, but if they were just giving away the content, they wouldn't have been able to sustain their operations nearly as long as they have.  Unfortunately, since I don't live in Houston, I have no reason (like many others) to read their content other than the Astros.  As a result, they won't be making any more money off me, either as a viewer or subscriber.

My understanding of Internet advertising in general is that revenues from said ads have decreased consistently and significantly over the past decade-plus.

Fine by me.   I think most Texas fans would have been happy if Diaz was not on staff next year.   Harsin leaving was more of a unexpected gut punch.

From everything I have read the past six months it's not all that unexpected.

It's not that I don't think Major can do the job.  I think he can.  It's there are major issues in the program.  Harsin didn't come here to bail after two seasons for a Sunbelt job.  Durham Smythe, a badly needed 4 star TE from Belton(same school as Ash) decommits.  A'Shawn Robinson, 5 star defensive tackle, may decommit unless mom wins out.  Kyle Hicks, 4 star rb, decommits. All the juco offers.  The program is in disarray, and Mack thinks he is doing the right thing trying to save his legacy.  Before this week's turn of events, I thought Texas could give Mack 2013 and then have him retire, but that's just not a good option anymore.  The program needs new blood at the top and it needs it immediately following the Alamo Bowl.

I don't want to wait for the Alamo Bowl (not that it really matters what I want). 2012 has been a debacle.

Mack needs to go. The sooner the better.

They have 4 open spots on the 40-man roster, too, correct?

LSU played for a national title with two losses, over a Georgia team that many felt was more deserving. They cannot play the "no respect" card now.
