So I guess Peacock isn't starting tmw.

Urquidy is going tomorrow, according to Buck.

2
Chad Green can serve up a homer.

3
Paxton is so long to the plate I’m surprised no one has tested hm yet.

4
Shit. Even the hangers get turned into outs.

5
Choi just will not chase.

I guess he'll chase up.

6
And at bat consistency. Taking and swinging through so many hittable pitches.

Looked like they were all within 4" of each other. Except for that called strike.

7
Nothing like strike zone consistency.

After seeing what Teejoe wrote, I have to admit that mostly, my hatred was for the opposing fans, the obnoxious imbeciles. Outside of some of those sorry-ass bastards on the Cubs, I don't much care about the Mets, Brewers or the Braves outside of their fans. I long ago stopped hating the Dodgers, and I remember those games as real blood feuds. I've learned to hate the neanderthals from Boston and take some joy in their front office stumbles, because despite all their bluster they really are little brothers to the Yankees and always will be. Fuck the Rangers, inconsequential clowns who resemble the Keystone Cops, and their desperate need to be relevant.

But oh, the flame that burns for those assholes on the north side of Chicago. I have a friend who works for the Cubs in a pretty visible position and I make exceptions for him, but otherwise, Fuck The Cubs. Forever.

9
Can anyone name one redeeming quality of Moscow Mitch??

You gotta remember that these people presumably represent the views of their state, or at least those who vote in their state. There's trainloads of support for his actions and his views in Kentucky.

I don't have stats to back it up but I'd think control guys that rely on spotting their fastball, would do better there than more of a breaking ball pitcher.

Yeah, it's fastball / sinker / changeup guys. Gray's about a run better at home than on the road in his ERA and it's pretty consistent through his career.

Yeah, I’ve thought about him. He’s got as good a numbers as anyone else but I haven’t considered him as available. His WHIP is 1.33 but that is no doubt inflated by Coors.

Gray actually is a lot better at Coors than he is on the road. He's a good pitcher, but he's a two-pitch pitcher and the Astros can do better.

Luhnow just said Peacock will not make his start tomorrow as planned. Valdez will make the start. He then stated the obvious, “we probably need to be looking at external options.”

Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports that "Peacock reported some soreness in his shoulder after throwing batting practice Saturday, July 13, and is scheduled to meet with team doctors. "

I wrote this in 2012, as a part of a series preview. I still feel this way.

Quote
I fucking hate The Peen.

All the real hatred I have is reserved for the Owner In Absentia though. The classless, bullying greedhead who became the scuttling lickspittle of the Barons who call the shots in the game I love. Inheritor of prosperity, relentless questor for ways to heap even greater sums into the ledgers of those who jerk his strings, all the while blithely willing to suffer the hatred and scorn of millions of fans across the country. As much as I’d like to see The Peen sprawled on the turf, shattered testicles filling his pants with blood, it would make the scene complete to catch Allen Huber’s kneeling figure as it pulls erect in the glare of the lights, his fangs dripping from lapping his dinner, a raspy gasp escaping his lips as he turns, snaps his cape and assumes the form of a bat to fly back across Milwaukee to his nocturnal lair.

Except cameras can’t see vampires.

Fuck you, Bud. I will piss on your grave. This time it counts.

Fuck him. Fuck his bullshit "book," his chortling reminiscenses of times spent emptying the spittoons of the Really Wealthy, his giggling with Other Millionaires and the twisted dream that they think of him as a friend. Or that any of us have the slightest interest in whatever warped sack of lies he hawks as his story.

18
The acting SecDef is withdrawing from consideration of the position of actual SecDef - and stepping down entirely - because it turns out he’s something of a major douche.  Still going to war with Iran, though, son everything is fine.

He gets to replace the acting SecDef lickspittle with another acting SecDef lickspittle, this one who was a lobbyist for Raytheon. Exciting military bona fides.

You're gonna miss him.

I was working from home when I got the news from a friend and pretty much started playing his music from that point on until into the night. My wife came home from work and I was on the couch, Easter Everywhere cranked up, and she said, “I KNEW this was what I’d see when I got home.”

After a while I started telling her about Roky. She knew a little, but not a lot, enough to know I was a fan but not much else. It was nice going over some of that stuff with her. I got my copy of Openers and showed that to her and told her a few more stories when it started to sink in how many times he’d been counted out but would struggle through and become reborn again. He was always dependent on others and somehow this changing core would shoo away the parasites and get him on a better path. There were many times that it seemed impossible but he was a force, and it was so unbelievable and unexpected and really, truly joyous that he had that last fifteen or so years where he was happy and kinda self-sufficient.

Yeah, I’ll miss him but he was always otherworldly, always like someone between dimensions or whatever. He was here, but he kinda wasn’t, and now he isn’t here but he kinda is. I for sure have never known anyone like him and don’t expect that I will ever see his kind again.

There was, and there were a couple of other cards that were passed out at an Opening Day lunch at Spanish Flowers a few years back. I have no remembrance of the recipient or if they moved on from there.

« on: January 22, 2019, 11:05:10 pm »
I know there are still a few here who hold great affection for Mott the Hoople. Despite the deaths of Overend Watts and Buffin, and the ill health of Mick Ralphs, Ian Hunter is joining with Verden Allen and Luther Grosvenor - Arial Bender - to reform the 1974 version of Mott for eight US dates and eight UK dates in April. The rest of the band will be filled out with Ian's magnificent Rant Band.

This will be the first US tour for Mott in 45 years, and very likely the last.

I don't know if I'll be successful, but I'm going to try for at least the Detroit and Cleveland shows. Maybe I'll be lucky enough to score photo credentials, I don't know. For those of you who are interested, general sales begin on Friday, January 25 at these links:

April 1 – Milwaukee, WI – Miller High Life Theatre (https://bit.ly/2AS48vg)
April 2 – Minneapolis, MN – First Avenue (https://bit.ly/2FBMUX7)

I think that the OSC had to release a statement taking issue with the Buzzfeed News report because it had to establish immediately that the leak did not come from them but from the SDNY. The OSC cannot give the office of the AG any reason to force the closure of the investigation, and the perception that the OSC is leaking privileged information would certainly be such a reason.

Bingo.

In the Texas Statehouse, where the House is now split 83-67, there is some noise that the Ds intend to vote together for a Speaker candidate, meaning they’d only need nine Rs to vote with them to elect a new Speaker. There is further noise leaking that they intend to support one of the already-nominated candidates, but how hard would it be to find one with 8 or 9 friends who’d like some nice Committee chairmanships? That’d make life with the other two legislative branches pretty interesting.

I don't know if any of you got to see Dan Stuart in his brief run through Houston or during his week in Austin. Hell, I don't know if more than one or two of you even know who he is (or was). Those shows in Austin, promoting his most recent and final album and the novel of the same name, "The Unfortunate Demise of Marlowe Billings," were spectacular, each one better than the previous one. It ended in a paroxysm of magic and wonder at the Continental Club Gallery, trading songs and stories with Jon Dee Graham. Check out the record, if you're so inclined.

Coming up pretty soon will also be "Red Rescue," the stunning first release by Jaimee Harris, currently supporting Mary Gauthier throughout the US and Europe. I think she'll finally get a national release of this one, perhaps in October, and I predict a lot of success for her. The record is incredibly good and so is she.

As a dedicated reader of Dress For Success you should certainly know that paisley silk never goes out of fashion. It is a cornerstone of any man's closet, like a good Chelsea boot, and will be employed either as a shirt or a cravat, or, among the more fashion-forward, both simultaneously.

My strategy was to scan the room for an upstanding, yet disparate group of individuals seemingly bound only by an intense rooting interest in Astros baseball and then look for context clues such as the presence of beer and/or queso. Admittedly, this approach is bound to produce many false positives.

I’ve got a lunch meeting today, so may be a little late to SF but looking forward to it and Second Lunch (beer) there.

Beer and Queso / Re: Facebook in Freefall
« on: March 29, 2018, 08:18:44 am »
Facebook changed my life.

I hear people bitch about it every day, almost all of them people who treated it as some sort of free tool that promised to take care of their hopes and dreams forever in some magical wonderland. I'm sorry for those who thought that was its purpose.

Facebook allowed me to see the dark, shallow and angry hearts of a lot of people I knew and was related to, and that has been a remarkable tool as well. I have had relationships damaged, probably beyond repair, because of some of the unconscionable actions and support that people close to me have gleefully and repeatedly revealed about themselves. I hate that. It's awful, but the only role Facebook played in that was to give these people the ability to connect with each other and to reinforce their views enough so that they felt empowered to be vocal about what used to be shameful or hidden. I fight against the echo chamber that results when my feed is stocked with people who share the same beliefs that I do, and I try to be responsible and make informed choices. I know that I'm more political than many people believe is necessary, but I also resist the need that a lot of people have to turn their feeds into expansive personal journals filled with long rants or further episodes of Why I Am So Great that I hate to read and would hate to foist off on everyone else. The monetized FB model is a strong reinforcement to those echo chambers and actually rewards them with prominence in local feeds, the snake eating its own tail.

Facebook changed my life though, way beyond the expected reconnection with others from high school or whatever. I've met hundreds of people because of it, have gained something that is threatening to become a second career because of it, and I've had an extraordinary amount of happiness, good will, personal growth and fun as a direct result of using it. I haven't made a lot of money because of it, but the unbelievable rewards I've been enjoying have been significant and without what's happened to me in the last ten years or so I'm afraid that I would've just continued a downward spiral into something pretty bad.

The only in-inning breaks that lead to commercial I can think of are pitching changes.  I don't remember anyone being injured so badly on the field that the tv went to commercial.  Do they take breaks for replays?

Yeah, sometimes.

Look, I'm just a grumpy old guy who's been battling the installation of new networking stuff on three hours' sleep and I let my cantankerousness spur a post I would've taken down, except someone replied to it before I could get there. Just act as though I don't have any idea what I'm griping about and we'll pretend this little episode never happened, ok?

« on: February 19, 2018, 03:53:30 pm »
Commercials have been shortened which is the only good thing to come from all this

They have, but not nearly enough. Every single break in the action is a break to commercial. Maybe limiting mound visits will have an effect on commercial breaks, but I'd like to see something a little stronger on in-inning breaks.

57
Talk Zone / Re: New Pace of Play Agreement
« on: February 19, 2018, 03:34:07 pm »
What a load of shit. It's painfully obvious that the whale in all of this is the increased commercials. Just own up to it, change it or don't, but don't pervert the game on the field because of the need to squeeze money out of every single second.

ETA: Well, ok, that and replay delays.

Talk Zone / Re: The Athletic Houston
« on: February 12, 2018, 11:56:47 pm »
If you're not familiar, The Athletic has built a blog network with professional writers (Rosenthal, Gammons) doing national coverage, and local writers providing more in-depth coverage.  The "catch" is that it's paid only.  It's not unreasonable (the current promo rate is less than $4/month), and there are no ads or clutter.  No 12 page slideshows.

They're launching the Houston site now, and they've already grabbed Jake Kaplan and Steve Campbell from the Chron.  Site is up here.

I'm debating about whether the (cheap) cost ads any value compared to what I get for free from the Chron and McTaggart.  But it's tempting.

I'm a big proponent of paying for quality media work because I don't like seeing newspapers, magazines, reporting and journalism dying. Nothing is perfect and bitching about flaws is easy, but if you don't support efforts like this, or local papers, or newsmagazines with good writing, it all gets dumbed down even further until it's virtually nonexistent. Chip in and keep efforts like these alive.

Astros just played one of the worst games in team history.  Hope they pick themselves up off the floor tomorrow.  Keuchel and Verlander need to pitch the absolute games of their careers. Oh yes, let's do away with an actual part of the game in the interest of time, because no one will talk about what the actual cause for long games is - the massive addition of commercials throughout.

Yes.  Perfect cannon and no cap bills involved.

I've got a couple of friends who are close to Deep Purple, I'll see if I can pry anything about this out of them. One guy has been with them since the Mark II days, he ought to know something.

After 26 years or so, a new Dream Syndicate album is out - 'How Did I Find Myself Here?' - and it's FUCKING GREAT. Snarly, howling, little bit of pop that leavens the good old guitar freakout roar. Can't be turned up loud enough. They're about to tour and will blow through Austin in late January, probably Dallas and Houston around then as well.

OMD's new album came out last week. I love OMD but this one is going to have to grow on me because it's not gripping me like I hoped it would, less of a whore in bed and more of an inexperienced sorority girl wannabe who is too confused to know how to try.

And then there's this, in the middle of a free online stream sneak preview courtesy of NPR. Advance word was that the sound quality was a massive upgrade and no joke, it is and it's better than any of us had a right to expect. Quantities are going to be limited and the 7" EP is just about already gone via pre-order, so if you haven't snapped it up now is the time for sure.

203
Been hearing the bolded point from pundits for awhile now.  The naivete embedded in this belief that makes me wonder about the media.

Generally speaking, when you get to stories like this and it's the most major, storied entities of the press, these folks are sharp as hell and are buried in reams of information that require technique and experience in order to get the truth, discard the fiction, and stay on the right side of the law. That's part of why these things progress slowly. I suspect that asking these questions in this manner is an attempt to frame this in the light of what Everyman would like to know and either get Trump to deny or lie some more, drawing the noose tighter. They know he'll never come clean, but it's a way of adding negative pressure to him.

204
To Trump's credit, it sound like he is at least listening to the people that actually understand the border.

Not so fast.

Just curious if any of y'all have any connections to the program or know anything about it.

Good for him! Other than it being a successful and highly-rated program (my wife has a Masters from the LBJ School) the bulk of what I know is that they work hard to maintain a first-rate faculty. I'd expect Global Studies to be a complex field of study that would be richly rewarding.

Oh, and in the spirit of six-degrees-of-separation and all that, you could improve your connection to Kevin Bacon.

Cafe Tacuba is really a great band.

Tom Heyman has a new one coming out real damn soon. It's inspired by the LeRoi Brothers, among other influences. Fire up YouTube and listen to the full ride of Cool Blue Feeling or at least #9 and Chickenhawks and Jesus Freaks. The man is incredible.

Speaking of incredible, Tom will be opening some shows in the East in June for the great Dan Stuart. Not to be missed.

And the genius that is Wreckless Eric has a new one coming out later this year. It's a bookend to his previous disc about his experiences in the US; this one goes back to growing up in England, moving to France, and then meeting Amy.

Who is in town tonight, preparing for a breakneck zip through Texas celebrating her 20th anniversary of Diary of a Mod Housewife, out on vinyl for the first time. She's at the Townsend in Austin tomorrow night (it's a secret, but she'll sit in with Rosie Flores at the Continental after), then she's in San Antonio, Houston and Dallas. Check your local listings or amyrigby.com for more.

While traveling through Texas in 1993, I went to a game in the Astrodome.  The promo that night was a set of Astros trading cards sponsored by Mother's cookies. It had most of a set and then had 7 of the same card.  You were supposed to trade to get the rest of the set.  We didn't.

Anyway I have two sets that I found during our move last summer.  If someone wants the extra set, I am sure we can work something out.  Just PM me.

It's one of the downsides of getting older.

I get it if you're in your 80s, or even in your early 60s as a touring musician but I've lost people to suicide, car accidents, cancer, etc. and they were all 34-45. It's been a tough one.

Hell, if you just count friends I've lost five this year, two by their own hand, and a couple more aren't doing so well.

Thank you for that beautiful writing, and I hope your father pulls through to get many more days with his loving daughter.

It seems to me that while our loved ones are alive we feel their presence in a different, more weighted and focused manner when they aren't around us. When they are finally gone, that changes to a more delicate presence, but it seems to fill so many more spaces. They're in reflections, in sounds, in scents and in feelings that can come out of nowhere. They never really leave us, they move to a different place while we take on as much of their physical lineage to keep that alive.

So far in the last month I’ve had two stage invasions, once in Bryan, Texas and again in Austin the following night:

In Bryan it was a random twerp who’d left a few bits behind from an open mic night and decided to stride across the stage in the middle of my set to pack up and ship out. I caught him on the stop in Semaphore Signals, grabbed him by his hippie t-shirt, asked him what the fuck he thought he was doing. Whatever it was he won’t be doing it again. I slapped his face - not hard but enough to make the point. I told him he was being disrepectful, pulled his glasses off his face and stuffed them down the front of his shirt. I poked him in the stomach and told him to fuck off. I thought I’d gone too far but it seems he’s universally loathed at the Revolution Cafe and I wasn’t the only one who thought he was being rude and intrusive. People have to learn.

At the Hole In The Wall in Austin a guy took it upon himself to jump on the stage and sing Whole Wide World. He wasn’t doing a bad job but Amy was about to come on and sing it with me so I got out of the way and Ron Brand (my right-hand man in Texas) escorted him off.

https://diaryofamyrigby.wordpress.com/

Quote
Joining Eric for a few songs every night – This is Eric’s tour and he asked me to come up and sing and play a few songs which is really sweet because since we’ve been together, a big part of our relationship has been playing music and even though it’s great to go out and do our own things again, performing together is special and romantic. The first night in Austin I’m waiting by the stage for my entrance in Whole Wide World and – wait, that very enthusiastic guy who’s been bopping and nodding his head intensely for the whole show is actually climbing onto the stage and striding straight up to the mic to sing the song as if he’s the special guest. Eric kindly deflects him and then our friend Ron Brand helps him off pretty quickly. At least I have my guitar so people don’t think I’m just one more in the queue to sing Whole Wide World.

On a recent visit back to Austin, though, she was shocked at how trashy it was to go out.  Bunch of drunk college kids running around.

Now I'm not saying that there's nothing to Austin but 6th Street; of course that's not true.  But it's a small town dominated by a huge college, so that's a big part of what happens there.

Small town with almost a million people.

As to #1, sure, Austin has its problems but I haven't run into this one and as some of you might know, I get out a little every now and then. Stay the fuck off of Sixth Street and you're ahead of the game. That was probably the fun place to go when Mrs. Limey was one of those college kids running around, but it's not that anymore. The fun places have moved to Rainey Street or other areas close to downtown and Sixth has become rougher and rawer.

The biggest problem you may face in living in Austin is that it's expensive and becoming even more so, and the transportation infrastructure is behind the times. But hey, Denver is pretty nice too.

I don't have the final word on this but my credit card has been charged, so we've got tickets. There are a lot more season ticket buyers now, and guess what? They're buying the cheaper seats in the 300s so we're probably going to be in Section 307 in the left field corner. Those are $45 each. She's going to monitor the seats closer to home for us, but they'll probably be around $75 if I understood her correctly.

On Monday, we begin selling Group Tickets for the 2016 season. As a renewal group, you have priority during the week of (November 2 – November 6). This is a great opportunity to secure the best seats at the lowest price possible. In the past, our early group buyers have saved up to 31% over traditional ticket buyers.

I'm sure we'll need at least 20 to qualify. Opening Day is Monday, April 11 vs. the Royals. Who's in?

That's because the Astros only existed long enough to be strongarmed into the American League. Now they're gone again.

My music stuff is pretty focused but SXSW gave me the opportunity to see some other folks. I can't explain fully why I haven't seen them before, but if you don't look up and check out Churchwood you might fall prey to plagues of locusts, boils and any number of other maladies. This is the smooth, light song of their set at the Saxon Pub during SXSW. I just posted it, and I've got a couple more I'll add over the next few days if you want to keep checking back on the YouTube channel. Beer and Queso / Re: Fuck the Super Bowl, name 6 Albums.

There's been a lot of great stuff mentioned, music that I listen to often - Mississippi John Hurt, Benny Goodman, Swiss Movement, Ogden's Nut Brown Flake, Li’l Ed, Medusa, L.A.M.F., Mance Lipscomb, etc. Medusa and Mance Lipscomb were especially meaningful to me because I listen to them a lot, certainly every month. Good stuff!

And yeah, I'd like to play. Can I?

Classical - I've listened to classical, I've got a lot more LPs than I do CDs of that, and it ranges from those old Great Performances records of stuff like the Goldberg Variations to the Three Tenors. I have a nice cd of Caruso that I listen to from time to time, and I enjoy Callas and Te Kanawa. It's not like I know what the hell I'm doing though - I don't have much of a grounding in classical music. I can say though, that what really made it work for me, made me start to appreciate it, was the two albums by Walter/Wendy Carlos, Switched-On Bach and the Soundtrack to Clockwork Orange. I still love both of those, and they take me right back to when I was eleven or twelve.

Blues - I was a blues freak. No, a blues FREAK. Like some people are jazz freaks, searching out rare sides, I was that way with the blues. Fortunately, we had Antone's and some great record stores, so I could stoke the hell out of that fire. One set I keep coming back to is a 4-CD compilation of late '40s and early '50s John Lee Hooker, Classic Early Years. Almost all of it is the man, his guitar, and his foot. Great stuff like Goin' Mad Blues, House Rent Boogie, Low Down Midnite Boogie, I'm Gonna Kill That Woman, No Friend Around, Decoration Day, Streets Is Filled With Women...man, that's a great set.

Old Rock - C'mon. I feel like that's all I listen to. I know it isn't, but it feels like it. I was just enjoying Made In Japan, and that's on the heels of the fantastic Fire Records reissues of Wreckless Eric's '80s and '90s efforts that just about everyone missed the first time around. But hey, this is about what I'm listening to and you aren't, so how about this - McLemore Avenue by Booker T and the MGs.

Jazz - It's my fault, it's my error, it's my shortcoming, but I have a hard time with jazz. I enjoy Kind of Blue and I see its place in history. I like that Les McCann set and the history behind it. I love the prowess of the great players and their collectives. I know what they're doing. I get it, I understand it, but it just doesn't grab me unless it's Louis Armstrong. That grabs me, I can listen to that man play that horn all day long. I love the Complete Hot Fives and Hot Sevens.

Country - I was raised on Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, George Jones and Ray Price. Well, them and rock music and the blues, but as far as country goes, it was them. Later on I figured out an appreciation for a lot more of the genre, but what I've been listening to a lot lately is...Shotgun Willie. What a monster of an album.

Alternative - What the hell is alternative? What kind of bullshit category is that? I'm not picking on NeilT, I'm picking on the nitwits who came up with it in the first place, and then the mindless public who parroted it back as though it meant something. Dolts.

I listen to a lot of stuff I'd consider to be alternative to whatever the hell else other people are listening to. I happen to love the two live Throbbing Gristle boxes. I'm a big Foetus/JG Thirlwell fan and I'm pretty confident no one I know is listening to any of that right now. Hell, try Noveller on for size. She's amazing.

What I've really been digging lately though, is something I KNOW none of you have been listening to and that's got to make it alternative, right? I recently picked up an album I was unfamiliar with, and it's incredible. The Concert Sinatra, from 1963. There's a great backstory to the disc and it's recording, but the shorthand is that it's Sinatra backed by Nelson Riddle and a 70-piece orchestra, using the most advanced recording techniques of the day, recorded onto 35mm film stock. Not only that, but it's a collection of songs that mostly came from film scores, reinterpreted by The Chairman, and he lets his voice really fly on these. None of that swingin', jazzy Frank; this is a musician taking his instrument as far as he can. Seek this one out, you won't regret it.

Thanks, NeilT.

Love is the answer, and you know that for sure.
Love is the flower, you gotta let it grow.

I'd been working the evening shift at the restaurant, got off around 11 or so and drove home. I'm sure I was listening to a tape in the car. Just a few days before, there had been news reports that he'd be touring to support the new album. Since I now had the means I had resolved that I'd do whatever it took to see one of those shows.

My wife woke me up in the morning and told me that I wouldn't be going to any of those concerts. I'd never been more numb, never been knocked down onto the floor into gray and black like that before. I didn't feel that way again until my father died. I still can't play that album. I never speak the name of that piece of shit responsible for it.

A few years ago, a much younger coworker told me that Michael Jackson's death was felt by more people than John Lennon's.

Jon Dee Graham's new album is out. It's a live retrospective, taken from fan-sourced and radio recordings of his performances over the last 18 years, solo and with different sidemen, recorded all across the country. There's a digital download available online, and he's also selling CDs at that link as well as at his shows. He's making a Midwest run right now.

If you're unfamiliar with his work, this is a fine article about him.

Full disclosure: I am Jon Dee's archivist, and this was my project. It took a lot of twists and turns along the way, but we both are very happy with the results.

Yeah, he did. I think his wife had some Texas connection and both he and Ronnie kinda followed Chesley Milliken, but for all intents and purposes he came to Austin because of Ronnie Lane, who moved to Colorado just a couple of months later because of the heat.

I opted for seats closer to the field. They're $52 each. We're in Section 133, Rows 20-24, 1st 4 seats from the aisle and Row 24 has the first 5 seats from the aisle, so we're all in a block. If we'd gone back to the area from last year, we'd have been much more spread out.

I'm surprised you made it through most of your life with that kind of reaction so something so offhand and not even meant to be insulting.

"Teabagger" is insulting to me.  At least "libtard" makes sense, I'm insulting your intelligence.  "Teabagger" means what, that I like to dip my nuts in peoples' mouths?  It creates a perverse mental picture, but how is that even relevant?   And the constant use of it by mainstream libs is disturbing.  I was shocked when I heard a guy on NPR say it.

I didn't call you a teabagger and I don't use that term. If you don't show me respect you can bet that'll be returned in kind. 'Lib' is clearly meant to annoy and degrade. Use the term 'liberal' or don't, but if you choose not to you should expect others to interpret it in a context you may avoid by using the correct word.

Beer and Queso / Re: voter ID and Alien Essence

"Conservatives" are simply lazy thinkers.

I did skip over this and I shouldn't have. There's plenty to like about a conservative point of view and certainly, there have been many conservative viewpoints that have a great deal of merit. I can't dismiss conservatism out of hand and I wouldn't want to dismiss liberalism or progressive viewpoints out of hand either. It's the folks at the ends of the bell curve who still fly those flags that make it all such a mess. It's oversimplifying to equate the Palins or the Duck Dynastys or the Brownbacks with conservatism; that's a much less intelligent, much more viscerally mean strain that I have a lot of fear of.

Actually, this keeping of the same uniform or even the same color scheme is a modern phenomenon.  In the old days, teams changed uniforms nearly every year, including changing colors from red and blue to black and white to pink and purple plaid.

I know there was a lot of information about uniforms in Bill James' Historical Baseball Abstract, but I don't remember anything as to why there were so many uniform changes. It was before selling t-shirts and jerseys became popular, so it wasn't that. Do you have any knowledge as to why they changed so often?

But Arizona’s young foundation appeared to underachieve last season— the team finished 82-80, two games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the pallid National League West — and a poor start to 2009 doomed Melvin, who was popular among players but less so in a front office that questioned his commitment to the club’s build-from-within philosophies. General Manager Josh Byrnes explained Hinch’s arrival by repeatedly citing his “organizational advocacy,” a euphemism for which the team was roundly mocked; Hinch’s page on the Web site Baseball-Reference.com was quickly sponsored by a Diamondbacks fan who cackled, “A J Hinch ... brimming with organizational advocacy.”

What is the NL?  Don't follow that stupid league where they let pitchers hit anymore....

But seriously I did not know that.  Did their GM call the manager and override the decision?  Did Morneau want to play and they are sitting him anyway?

I don't know. I don't give enough of a shit to try to find out.

You realize that over in the NL, those chickenshit statheads in Colorado have rested Morneau the last two days while Josh Harrison of Pittsburgh played and lost the batting title.

It seems to me that all he is saying regarding the lawsuit against him by Crane is that he will take on the defense expenses himself rather than enforcing a clause that would require the network to pay for those expenses on his behalf.

I don't think he'd ever say it out loud, but it seems to imply to me that he's backing the reorganization and the subsequent payout he'd have to make in return for Crane dropping the suit. It gives all parties some cover.

There's a whole 18-wheeler's load of smoke and mirrors in that one. So, is this McLane agreeing to some givebacks and public support for the settlement so that Crane drops his suit against McLane? If it is, will Crane be happy to let McLane have his little op-ed splash because money talks, or is this Drayton trying to get a dig in even though he's agreed to pay damages in the face of the lawsuit, and Crane may well feel the need to answer publicly?

They'd been living out of her car, but she's been Facebooking about how she's pregnant and can't wait to see her new baby. As you might imagine, the ex-husband is a real piece of shit too. The kid never had a chance.

I keep looking for Drellich's offensive tweets and every "objective" spanking and come away perplexed.  It appears that some fans want their reporters to merely parrot and blindly support those they cover.

Drellich isn't offensive, he's yappy and has an agenda, partly because he's been frozen out.

I guess you see whatever the hell you want to see. I sure don't have the time to go back and parse all the sites and quotes and things I saw yesterday that led me to my conclusions. I'll crawl back into my hole and you guys can continue the circle jerk.
