If they really want to honor Jeter, they should make casting a really easy ballot look difficult.
Jeter brought thrills to routine plays like no other player. He added excitement where there was none. Therefore HOF.

« on: November 08, 2019, 03:19:25 pm »
We don't really know if a search happened or not.
Crane said he was hired to set it up for family succession, why would he lie? Do you think if Jared was the result of an executive search that they wouldn't say so?

Again, I'm asserting nothing nefarious. If Crane Sr. wants to pass control of the team to his son it make sense to get him involved now. However, I see that Jared works for his father and probably always has, so I doubt he has "made his own way" in the world. However, if he is good at the job it could benefit us fans for decades.

Talk Zone / Re: Reid Ryan phasing out
« on: November 08, 2019, 12:25:22 pm »

(Crane) We felt at this time it was time for [Jared] to step in. I'm past retirement age, and he needs to learn the business if the family is going to retain the team...I'm not a spring chicken.
So Crane himself agrees with me. His son got the job because he is his son. Again, it doesn't imply nefarious motive, he is preparing a succession plan for the family to continue ownership of the team. If Jared is good at it, it bodes well for the team's future.

What did not happen was an executive search that yielded Jared Crane as the best candidate by pure coincidence. I hope he is good at the job because he probably won't be replaced if he isn't.

Yes you will. It is right there in his name. I'm just grateful McLane's kids weren't interested back in the day.
I see no baseball background at all. I see a member of the lucky sperm club. He would not be considered for this job by any other team. That doesn't mean he won't be good at it, it just means he didn't get the job on merit.

My system can only accommodate Frito pie on rare occasions. I have had to moderate my intake and reserve this powerful sacrament for elimination games.

I've just had Frito pie with "Flamin' Hot" Fritos for extra offense.

It's times like these when one has to sacrifice gastro-intestinal comfort for the good of the team.

Go ASTROS!!

If he’s needed, the car is in the ditch.  If you can’t get 8 out of Greinke and Cole, then whoever comes in next is probably moot.
Maybe, but Urquidy has had better stuff than any other starter. Hinch did not stretch him out too far on Saturday so he probably has some gas left in the tank. I can't imagine Cole would be good for much more than an inning on just two days rest.

That and what an unsung signing he was by the front office.
Astros only signed him to get to his little brother.

I also do not want to hear a fucking whine about starting Ross. Injuries are part of it, as we well know, and they had their chance at Urquidy in Game 4.
Had Houston won game 5 by a score of 7-6 they would have a point. But unless Scherzer was guaranteed to throw a CGSO, the Astros almost certainly get two runs and still win. As it stands, Scherzer could pitch a game 7 against Grienke.

I don't think anybody beats Cole or the Astros last night.

JV's game Tuesday is very important. If there's a game 7, Scherzer will likely pitch. I'd like to see some early run support (for a change) for JV and let him roll with confidence.

The series thus far: Tied at two games each
Washington: 19 runs on 36 hits with 4 errors
Houston: 19 runs on 43 hits with 2 errors

The Nats have been a little more efficient with their run production as the Astros have left so many RISP, even in game four.

I like the Astros chances in a three game series, but the remaining games will probably be gut wrenchers with the starting pitching we will see. If the Astros can get into the Nat's bully early, I might be able to reduce my antacid consumption. BBGs willing.

I think Alvarez starts in left field and Brantley in right. It's not a great defensive lineup, although Alvarez was not bad in his few appearances in left and Brantley may have a better arm than I've been giving him credit for. Right now, Astros needs all the offense they can muster and with the exception of his NY HR, Reddick has struggled.

Hopefully, being named RoY will inspire Alvarez to hit the ball into the Potomac.

Following that train of thought, it should be Cole Saturday (if necessary) and all hands on deck (including Verlander, Greinke, and probably even Cole) on Sunday (if necessary)
If the Astros can win one of the next two games, I would think Cole gets Sunday on normal rest, if necessary and Johnny Allstaff on Saturday.

Boone hasn't officially said so, but it's probably going to be Tanaka vs Grienke On Thursday. Grienke pitched O.K. in Game 1 but can pitch much better. Tanaka can't pitch much better than he did in Game 1 and I don't think he can keep the Astros' offense down a second time.

« on: October 04, 2019, 09:33:05 pm »
When I look at video of old World Series from the '40s through at least the '60s I notice how poor the field conditions are. In front of the plate it is often all hard pan and there are dead spots in the outfield. After a full season of wear, the groundskeepers of the day were hard pressed to provide a playable surface.

Contrast that to today's postseason with virtually perfect playing surfaces regardless of climate or number of games played.

Historically, baseball's horticulture has never been better.

That was inexcusable.

I've been following this team since I was a wee tyke during the Colt .45 days. As the team and I grew older, I started paying more attention to the standings and statistics.

Around 1969 or 1970 I started making note of the team's 82nd win, or 82nd loss. A winning record was a victory in those days and I always wanted the team to get that 82nd win. Years later, sometime after the All Star break, I started estimating the number of wins needed to win the division. Usually the Astros weren't the one to get it, but I was right in 1980 and again in 1999.

Then came The Troubles and the 63rd win became an annual milestone marked with solemnity.

At last came The Great Redemption and the Crane / Luhnow era. We have seen the greatest milestone of them all: 100 wins for three straight years!

I fuckin' love this team!

Bonds is the best hitter I've seen. The juice, as far as I know, does not improve his strike zone judgement or contact. Presumably, it did improve his exit velocity somewhat.

2019 over 1998 by a whisker. The thing that impresses me about the 2019 team is how productive the offense has been with multiple starters out for injury. Currently, two major offense producing starters are out in Yuli and Carlos and they still overwhelm almost any offense in the AL.

In October, insha'baseballa, a healthy and dialed in 2019 Astro lineup will inspire dread in opposing pitchers.

When I played I couldn't reliably lob the ball to first. If I didn't put some mustard on the throw, I couldn't be sure where it was going. Unsurprisingly, I see a lot of those side-armed lobs pull the first baseman off the bag. Last night, the Padres' shortstop threw a side-armed lob into the dugout and cost them the game.

I think Carlos may have just one more year to show he can play a full season. His injury history is becoming a threat to his career potential. He is at least at some risk of having to become a Bill Spiers type player. One with superb talent but only able to play part-time because of back issues.

MLB list Maldonado on the 25 man but none of the other acquisitions.
Urquidy, Sneed, and Abreu are all listed on the 25 man as of this posting, Pressley is on the IL and not on the 25 man. Right now, 12 pitchers are listed on the 25 man roster, they may go with 13 and option Straw for awhile after Pressley returns. My guess is that Urquidy, Sneed, and Abreu will go back to RR when the three new arms get on the team.

Talk Zone / Re: 1st Place, Fish-slingers, and the schedule so far...
« on: July 29, 2019, 01:18:10 am »
The lopsidedness of the Astros' schedule against winning teams has been curiously persistent. I took a look this evening and was surprised to find that even at this rather late stage in the season Houston has played 73 of their 107 games, or about 68%, against winning teams. They are 45-28 (.616) in those games.

By contrast, the Yankees and Twins have both played 53 of their 105 games, or just over 50%, against winning teams. The Yankees are 33-20 (.623) in those games while the Twins are 29-24 (.547).

The schedules are not balanced, so teams won't necessarily end with 50% vs winning teams, but I expect it to even up quite a bit before the end of September.  This should play out to the Astros' benefit.

To me, Pinwheel is just as bad as FYB. If I remember correctly, he was with the Chronicle and writing that a league change would certainly not be a condition for sale approval by MLB and was only something being discussed as a possibility for the distant future, and it probably wouldn't be the Astros moving anyway. Then, just as the sale and forced league change became known, he resigns from the Chronicle and goes to work for MLB.

Somebody correct my recollection, but I remember him as a real snake in the grass.

He was literally standing next to 3B when he fielded the ball. He could have reached over and touched the bag. Straw would have had to run right into him to reach 3B. But you’re right, it would not hav been close.
You and I remember very different plays. If he, as you said, fielded it on the base then obviously Straw doesn't try to advance. I remember the ball being charged by the third baseman, fielded at least 15 feet down the line and thrown on the run and shortstop being nowhere near third base. Which is why I made my original comment.

The video will not be on any highlight  reel since the play was not consequential.

I thought he was suggesting that straw run after the 3B made the throw to first because, as you point out, it was clear Straw would have run into the tag if he was running right after contact.

No, not that it matters since Altuve ended the inning immediately thereafter, Straw had a normal second base lead and could easily have made it to third on the roller down the line. The third baseman made the play and the throw on the run about 15 or 20 feet up the line barely getting Springer at first. He could not have stopped, pivoted and thrown to a shortstop who could not have beaten Straw to third. The way I saw it, it wouldn't have been close.

Who the fuck is Rickey?

Not worth the risk of attempting to advance to 3rd with 2 outs.

The ball was a slow roller down the line. The third baseman had to charge it. Nobody was covering third. Baserunning 101: take the base when it is given.

Just a personal note. I grew up in Lubbock and both of my parents were Tech grads and heavy supporters, so I know all about Rip Griffin and that history. But to me, Tech baseball will always have a black mark as long as they play at Dan Law Field.

Dan Law was my first baseball coach when I was 7. He was such an asshole and slavedriver (to 7 year olds!) that he turned off both me and my parents to organized sports from that point forward. He'd yell and scream and berate little kids. He demanded that the team parents pay for and build new facilities at a church, then didn't like it and never used it. When the Lubbock TV stations did investigative series on overly competitive coaches and parents in kid sports, they used Dan Law as the model.

I realize he donated a lot of money and material to Tech. Big deal. He ruined organized baseball for me and a lot of other kids. In my mind, any place that carries his name has a black mark. Especially a baseball field.
Dan Law died today:
https://www.kcbd.com/2019/07/02/legendary-red-raider-dan-law-dead/?fbclid=IwAR2tZEy1RvF5FTveAUxeDpeDMxvty17tuWw7elXp2gN_w63cT4AQnM6QhYA
I don't know if he ever repented. I do know that Tim Tadlock runs a positive program.

If I hadn't been there from the beginning of the Skip Bertman era, andif you'd have told me back in 1982 (my senior year) that LSU would eventually have a major college baseball program that would win six CWS championships, I'd have laughed out loud and asked for some of what you were smoking. The bottom line is that great coaches like Skip and Coach Tadlock can buck the odds and build a perennial winner at any school. It takes vision and a whole lot of elbow grease.
After the second CWS appearance there was a lot of talk about Tadlock going to Austin. The gist of it being: "If U.T. wants him, they'll get him. He won't be able to turn them down." When asked about that by media he said words to the effect: "My family and I are Red Raiders and that's all I'll ever say about that." I don't think Tadlock ever buys a beer in Lubbock.

Tech pitchers can't find the plate with a GPS and a guide. McMillan walks the bases loaded with two outs then gives up the two run blooper. On offense Tech has a few bloopers of their own but have left a number roughly equal to the population of Council Bluffs, Iowa on base.

After three innings: Michigan 6, Texas Tech 3.

The Tech program is so far beyond the program I saw forty years ago that it's a completely different thing. The field then was about high school caliber and one just walked up to watch a game. The players practiced on hard pan dirt in 25 degree weather and 30 MPH wind in down jackets.

Rip Griffin donated a bunch of money and got the Red Raiders a real stadium and some other facilities, like indoor practice capability for harsh Lubbock winters. Then Kirby Holcutt was hired as A.D. and he hired Tim Tadlock who turned the program from an also-ran into a power.

Tadlock is a master of player development, which is what's needed to pull a program up from the bottom. Now, with the Red Raider's success, Tech is starting to see better recruiting which will hopefully keep us in the mix for Omaha for some time to come.

With men's T&F natty, men's basketball national runner-up, baseball, and Tech's continuing national dominance of meat judging, it's a golden age of Texas Tech sports......well, except for football.

SEC gorvelling is now rampant in all college sports.

Texas Tech is now the National Champion in men's Track & Field and Virginia (ACC) barely beat the Red Raiders in the basketball championship. The SEC is overwhelming other conferences with sheer numbers, but with some pretty good baseball and basketball programs, and a few good football teams, the tiny, ten team (nine for baseball) Big XII does alright.

Yeah, I’ll miss him but he was always otherworldly, always like someone between dimensions or whatever. He was here, but he kinda wasn’t, and now he isn’t here but he kinda is. I for sure have never known anyone like him and don’t expect that I will ever see his kind again.
When I was in Lubbock, "The Explosives", a band from Austin, would frequently play at a club called "Fat Dawg's". I, along with my circle of friends, got friendly with a couple of members, Cam and Freddie, who would tell tales of Roky. Years later, they would tour with a resurgent Roky. Good memories.

"You're Gonna Miss Me" is the greatest rock and roll song of all time.

North Carolina had a nightmare first inning as Auburn dropped a baker's dozen on them. The Tarheels held the Tigers to one run the rest of the way but it was too much hill to climb. Auburn wins 14-7 and advances to the CWS.

Meanwhile Arkansas rallied for 4 runs in the bottom of the second to lead Ole Miss  4-1.

Both match ups seem to favor the home team......
Texas Tech just defeated Oklahoma State 8-6 in a slobba-knocka game and get their ticket punched to Omaha.

I think home field was likely the difference in the Texas Tech-Oklahoma State series. The two teams are so closely matched and, as clearly the best two teams in the #2 RPI conference, should not (in my opinion) have been paired in the Super Regional.

Florida State is playing out of their heads but, I think need to win today or won't have enough to beat a better LSU team tomorrow. Still 4-4 in the bottom of 10.

Watching Auburn leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the first against #14 overall seed North Carolina reminds me of a flaw in the tournament structure.

I think the tournament should be re-seeded after the regionals. That way a #14 N.C. or a #13 LSU doesn't get to host a super regional against an unranked opponent while a #9 Oklahoma State plays on the road. It seems if a top seed stumbles in the regional, then the much lower seed in the paired regional has an undeserved easy road to Omaha.

#1 UCLA hosts Michigan
#8 Texas Tech hosts #9 Oklahoma State
#5 Arkansas hosts #12 Ole Miss
#13 LSU hosts Florida State
#2 Vanderbilt hosts Duke
#7 Louisville hosts #10 East Carolina
#6 Mississippi State hosts #11 Stanford

Congrats to my Tigers for being selected to host a super-regional against Florida State. I must admit to being somewhat ambivalent about playing Florida State, and their venerable head coach, Mike Martin. I had the opportunity to meet with Coach Martin when Florida State entertained the Tigers. He's been the Florida State Seminoles head baseball coach for approximately 45 years. Despite his long career, and a bevy of College World Series appearances, Coach Martin has never won a college world series. I'd really like to see him win one, even if it is at our expense, because he's one of the realaly good guys in college baseball.
Florida State destroyed a pretty good field in the regional. They do not look like a #3 regional seed. On paper, LSU should beat them. 'Course that's not where the game is played.

Once FSU destroyed #4 overall seed Georgia, LSU at a #13 was the only overall seed left in the pair of regionals, so they get the super-regional in Baton Rouge.

After Sunday's games, ten of the sixteen regional championships have been decided:

Texas Tech swept the Lubbock regional 3-0. The Red Raiders will host either Oklahoma State or UConn in the super-regional. Those two play a decisive game Monday in OKC.

Arkansas won their regional and will host Ole Miss who won their regional. This will be an all SEC super-regional in a battle of national seeds: #5 Arkansas and #12 Ole Miss.

Overall #13 seed LSU won their regional and will host Florida State who was the upset winner as a regional #3 seed.

Overall #2 seed Vanderbilt swept their regional as expected and will play the surprise winner of the Morgantown regional, Duke.

#6 overall seed Mississippi State won their regional and will host the winner of the Stanford vs Fresno State game tomorrow.

North Carolina won their regional and will host Auburn, who defeated #3 overall seed Georgia Tech to win the Atlanta regional.

UCLA will play Loyola Marymount University tomorrow in a decisive game for the Los Angeles regional. The winner of this game will play the winner of Creighton vs. Michigan  tomorrow. As an overall #1 seed, UCLA will host the super-regional if they win.

Louisville will play Illinois State in a decisive game. East Carolina will continue their rain delayed regional with a game against the Campbell Camels. If East Carolina beats the Campbell Camels, they will play again in a decisive game. The winner between ECU and the Campbell Camels will play the winner of the Louisville vs Illinois State game.

Also: it's fun to say Campbell Camels really fast.

The Big XII went 3-2 today:

Baylor released the kraken, and the hounds, and the bears, and the bats, and the cats, and the elephants, and everything. They released everything on poor lil' Omaha 24-6, leaving the Mavericks to journey home without a solitary hap. Baylor will, improbably, play #1 overall seed UCLA tomorrow morning in another elimination game with the winner playing LMU.

The Red Raiders slipped by a very good Dallas Baptist team 3-1. They will play the winner of the Dallas Baptist vs. Florida game tomorrow.

TCU lost to Arkansas 3-1 in a hard-fought game. The Frogs will play Central Connecticut tomorrow for the chance to play Arkansas again.

The West Virginia Mountaineers stumbled against Duke 4-0. WVU couldn't overcome early controversy to get to Duke pitching. They will play Texas A&M tomorrow morning for another chance at the Blue Devils.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys came from behind with four runs in the ninth to beat Nebraska 6-5. They will play the winner of the U. Conn vs Nebraska game tomorrow.

The Red Raiders and Cowboys are headed for a super-regional battle royal if they can each win one more. The rest of the Big XII will have to slog it out through the loser's bracket to get to the supers.

I was just perusing the injury list and it is sobering:

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/fantasy/injuries/#team117

How injured is Altuve? He hasn't been himself as a player all season even when he wasn't injured. What level of play will he have when he returns?

Springer is listed with a "Grade 2" hamstring pull. I'm not an expert, but when they give it a grade that can't be good. We may not see George until after the ASB. Correa was having great year before he was injured and we will be lucky to see him before the ASB, and more likely in August.

I think every win between now and the ASB will be difficult and precious. It's possible the Astros could be challenged for the division even though that seems unlikely now. If, however, they can win enough until the team gets back to full strength around mid to late August, they will be set for a good playoff run.

Day one is in the books and the story is the dominance of #3 seeds. Number 3 seeds play number 2 seeds in the first round of the regionals. With two close seeds playing in 16 games, one should expect some upsets, perhaps as many as six or seven; but, this year we had at least twelve #3s beating #2s with one rain-delayed game completing tomorrow morning. Oregon State is the only #1 seed to be upset as the defending National Champs were beaten by #4 Cincinnati 7-6.

Big XII went 3-1 today with #2 Baylor being the only one sent to the loser's bracket as they were defeated by #3 Loyola Marymount 3-1. #1 Texas Tech beat #4 Army 11-2, #3 TCU beat #2 Cal 13-2, and #1 WVU beat #4 Fordham 6-2.

Tomorrow, Baylor plays an elimination game against Omaha. Texas Tech plays Dallas Baptist, TCU plays Arkansas, and West Virginia plays Duke in winner's bracket games. Sixteen teams go home tomorrow as the field will narrow to 48 teams.

Their CF, Brandon White, is Marisnickian in the field.

TCU’s inclusion is a joke.
There's a lot of grousing over that. BYU has a legitimate gripe, but nobody really wants to deal with their inability to play on Sunday so they kind of got screwed and Texas State (I still think of them as SWTSU) doesn't have the recent history that TCU has. I'm also not sure why TCU is a #3 and not a #4 regional seed.

It looks like the Oklahoma State regional will be played in Oklahoma City rather than Stillwater due to flooding.

I like the Big XII for baseball and basketball because as a small league, everybody plays everybody. I'm pulling for my alma mater, Texas Tech, but West Virginia is my sleeper pick for the CWS. They have great starting pitching and defense and are currently playing their best baseball of the year.

Did not realize that John Bateman played with the Astros for six years.  If I remember correctly, the promo on him as a rookie was his eating prowess, 5-10 hamburgers at one meal.
I remember Bateman as John Edwards' backup. I remember the day the Astros' Buddies got to go out on the field and "work" with the Astro that played your position. I was with the group of kids that were catchers, we were hoping for Edwards but we got Bateman. As I recall, he was pretty nice and informative and he replaced Edwards as the favorite among some of the kids by the time we went back to our seats in the gold section of the 'Dome.

The field of 64 is set. The Big XII is well represented with five of the league's nine teams making the field: Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, West Virginia are all regional hosts and Baylor and TCU are regional #2 and #3 seeds respectively.

UCLA is the overall #1 and will have Baylor along with LMU and Omaha in their regional with only Baylor likely to put up much fight. Texas Tech is the overall #8 with Army, Florida, and Dallas Baptist in their Regional to be played in Lubbock. Oklahoma State is the overall #9 and has Harvard, Nebraska, and U Conn. in their regional in Stillwater. Arkansas is an overall #5 seed and has Cal, Central Conn. State, and TCU in their regional in Fayetteville. Finally for the Big XII, West Virginia hosts a regional for the first time. The Mountaineers are a #15 overall seed and have Fordham, Duke, and Texas A&M in their regional in Morgantown.

There are 16 overall seeds each hosting a regional. The first eight overall seeds will host a super-regional if they win their regional.

There are too many SEC teams for my taste and I'm not happy about Texas Tech and Oklahoma State being paired in the same super-regional assuring only one can possibly get into the College World Series. Nevertheless, it is a great field and promises to be some of the most entertaining baseball to be seen all year.

Oklahoma State comes back to win 5-2.

Oklahoma State is the 2019 Big XII Tournament Champions.
Texas Tech wins the regular season championship.

Both are likely to be national seeds in the NCAA tournament. West Virginia has done enough to host a regional, Baylor may also host a regional and TCU may have done enough to squeeze into the field.

The Big XII is a great baseball conference.

Since it’s the opposite of how the entire college season is played out?   Besides leading to ridiculous pitch counts, a 3 game series is a much better option.
I agree that two out of three is a better format, but the double elimination (not round robin) group of four is the next best thing. It allows for a team to recover if they run up against a lights out pitcher but rewards the team that wins its first two games.

Tech is looking to solidify a top 8 seed in the NCAA; West Va. and Baylor are looking to host a regional, even though I think they've already earned it; TCU just trying to salvage something from the season with an outside shot at making the NCAA tournament.

D1 Baseball has Tech and OKS in the tournament at overall seeds of 7 and 10 with Baylor and WV at regional 2 seeds.

Reddick's 8-8 run against LHP ends with a ripped line drive to 3rd
He's been great against LHP at least since early last year. I was at a game in LAA last year and they brought in a lefty to face Reddick with runners and I told all the Angels fans with me that Reddick eats lefties for lunch with the commensurate  razzing. Reddick put it into the right field bleachers and made me look good.

Does anyone have more detail or perhaps have seen him pitch? Presumably he takes Altuve's place on the 40 and 25 man roster and the team goes forward with 13 pitchers, but does this mean McHugh is back to the pen?
