Doesn’t sound like The Old Man is taking it well:
Mark Berman tweeted:
Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan says in a text message he will not continue in his role as an executive advisor to the owner of the #Astros: “I will not be back with the club and will leave it at that.”

Interesting about Reid. I wonder the inside story. Nolan Ryan is a world-class jerk who did nothing day to day but lend his name.

The fact that they already announced Jared taking his place rather than searching for a replacement says to me that Jim wanted his son in the job to start grooming him, and shoved Reid out to make it happen.
I’ve seen speculation that this has something to do with the handling of Taubman but that makes no sense. If you’re looking for a fall guy then you make public that the move is for that reason.

Yeah, well maybe. The press release was Reid’s ultimate responsibility. Seems more like your initial theory though. Reid is great at PR but is not a baseball guy. Nolan was a great pitcher who morphed into an ass.

Does Nolan have an official position with the club? Will be interesting to see who is providing the wienies next season.

I have seen what appeared to be a gracious side on rare occasions but Nolan has always been first and foremost a what-do-I-stand-to-gain-from-this kind of guy.
-
Owner Jim Crane: “Nolan Ryan’s contract with the Astros as an executive advisor runs through Feb/2020. If Nolan has decided to step down that is his decision. Nolan will always be welcome at Minute Maid Park and at any Astros-related activities.”

Special assistant or some such.

The optics on this are horrible. And after the Taubman fiasco. Is Crane tone-deaf?

How are the optics horrible?

I was about to bitch about nepotism and then I remembered that this is protesting Reid Ryan leaving, so...

I might know a little more than you about how he really is.

Bullshit.

Nothing wrong with a business hiring a relative if the relative is competent or better.
-
The optics are only terrible for the Ryans.

No doubt.

So is Dollar Dog Night no longer going to be sponsored by Nolan Ryan Beef? #importantquestions

Exactly! Why do I agree with you so much? You should be concerned.

The Rangers will do that to you.

Crane is the controlling owner, but far from the only owner. I’m surprised he was willing to jam his son into this role given that the minority owners own a significant portion of the team and would likely prefer to explore other options.

How do you know the “likely” part? How do you know he did not discuss the changes with them?

I know nothing about Crane Jr other than he's in his mid-30's... where'd he go to school, where'd he work afterwards? Not that it's a be-all-end-all, but it's interesting to know.

If you're looking for something in his resume to support this move, you won't find it.

Yes you will. It is right there in his name. I'm just grateful McLane's kids weren't interested back in the day.

McLane's kid was a Mets fan.

I see no baseball background at all. I see a member of the lucky sperm club. He would not be considered for this job by any other team. That doesn't mean he won't be good at it, it just means he didn't get the job on merit.
-
I see no baseball background at all.
He's president of business operations. He (presumably/hopefully) won't have much to do with the baseball side of things.

Also probably all true.
-

So you see nothing in his resume that says he's capable of running a business?

Reid Ryan did not have “a baseball job.” This is a corporate business position, not a baseball job. Luhnow and his staff handle baseball. How would you describe Reid Ryan if you think Crane’s son is nothing but a “lucky sperm?” Was Reid Ryan qualified (by your astute judgment) to run a professional franchise 20 years ago?
If a baseball background were required before being hired, many front offices in MLB would have to get rid of there nerds and analysts.
Y’all are just looking for something to bitch about.

You worded that well, thank you. I've been trying to figure out why so many are "up in arms" over this. As long as things continue to get better - I think they did under Reid - then woohoo for us! As long as they leave Luhnow alone I'll be happy.
I think both Reid and Jared lucked out in the sperm pool.

Of course they did, but being lucky in being born well does not mean they lack talent or ability. Thinking otherwise without personal knowledge is an insult.

Exactly. Reid Ryan certainly benefitted from having a famous dad. However, as I understand it, he was the driving force behind the Hooks success and has done what appears to be a great job for the Astros. Jim Crane won't suffer fools for long, so if his son doesn't work out, I bet that he won't hesitate to take nexcessary steps to solve the problem.

It was a comment on their genes not their capabilities.

Some public comments from the priniciples themselves:
(Crane) We felt at this time it was time for [Jared] to step in. I'm past retirement age, and he needs to learn the business if the family is going to retain the team...I'm not a spring chicken. I've been working hard for a long time, and in all of my stuff I'm building a succession plan. Baseball requires a plan in peace for each team, so we're doing that and planning for the family. It has nothing to do with Reid.
(Reid) Jim Crane has been a great owner for the city of Houston, and I thank him for the opportunity to lead the Houston Astros organization. Thank you to the many employees, fans, and partners that have supported this team during my tenure as president. Baseball is about bringing joy to people's lives and I take pride in knowing that we have made so many memories for our fans. While my role has changed, I will remain with the Astros and look forward to another great season in 2020.

So Crane himself agrees with me. His son got the job because he is his son. Again, it doesn't imply nefarious motive, he is preparing a succession plan for the family to continue ownership of the team. If Jared is good at it, it bodes well for the team's future.
What did not happen was an executive search that yielded Jared Crane as the best candidate by pure coincidence. I hope he is good at the job because he probably won't be replaced if he isn't.
-
I hoe this goes better than the succession plan in HBO’s series, Succession.

So sorry to here about Mo.

We don't really know if a search happened or not.

His son got the job because presumably he will be the owner one day. Better he get involved in the business now so he can get the experience and be a good owner if and when that day comes. Let's not pretend this is unique, every owner of every professional sports team has their kids in high positions. It makes sense, if you were Crane and your son wanted to "join the family business" he would be hired the next day.

I've come around to this conclusion as well.

Was not talking about what you said. Talking about others.

He is on a mission. Let him roll and hit the ignore button.
-

Crane said he was hired to set it up for family succession, why would he lie? Do you think if Jared was the result of an executive search that they wouldn't say so?
Again, I'm asserting nothing nefarious. If Crane Sr. wants to pass control of the team to his son it make sense to get him involved now. However, I see that Jared works for his father and probably always has, so I doubt he has "made his own way" in the world. However, if he is good at the job it could benefit us fans for decades.
-

JJ Gotsch ran the Hooks, not Reid. JJ was Reid’s roommate at TCU, I think.
-
My understanding is that crane the younger is involved with a lot of Crane the senior’s businesses with the obvious intent of passing the torch.
And I join the chorus of many who chuckle at the indignation about nepotism in defense of Reid Ryan.

Yep, me too. Sometimes righteous indignation is not righteous at all.

It's a closely held private business. Who cares who the owners choose to run it?
My only concern is as a consumer who wants to spend my money on a competitive team (baseball side) and a pleasurable fan experience (operations side).
Crane can hire his son, his masseuse, his parrot, etc.

Even more comical (regarding Nolan) are the Rangers fans clamoring to, "bring him back!"

As long as it isn't Correa's masseuse.

He switches allegiances when it suits him.

The groveling of Ryan's schlong knows no bounds in DFW. This idiot bastard is just making up his own version of alternate facts. (https://www.dallasnews.com/sports/rangers/2019/11/07/could-nolan-ryans-abrupt-exit-from-the-astros-organization-mean-a-return-to-the-rangers/) Not ot be outdone, this dumb-as-a-turd dipshit is just as ill-informed. (https://www.star-telegram.com/sports/mlb/texas-rangers/article237141224.html) WTF is wrong with so many of those people up there?

The deification of Nolan Ryan is and has always been a total mystery to me.

Exactly. He's like the territorial tribal fighters in Afghanistan. Fuck Nolan Ryan.

Can't read because paywall, but I fully expect Nolan to go back to the Rangers in some capacity, because that would be completely on brand for him.
-
The deification of Nolan Ryan is and has always been a total mystery to me.
Agreed, especially after my realization of how he treats those close to him.

McLane's kid was a Mets fan.
Still is, as far as I know. I know that he does not follow the Astros anymore.

I've wondered if Reid Ryan wasn't tied to how the press release on Taubman was handled.

I have also. That was one of his areas of responsibility.
