Just fired Gaine as GM. What a dysfunctional group.

Not something I expected to read today. Any reasons given?

After evaluating performance ... blah blah blah.. make a change... blah blah blah.
Personally, I think it's McNair the younger making the team his own now that McNair the elder is no longer around.

Thank God for the Astros - what a shitty organization

Seeing on ESPN that Pats gave filed tampering complaint against Texans. Could this have something to do with the unusual tIming of the GM firing?

Probably. They were supposedly targeting one of their top guys for the GM replacement.

What does that have to do with revenue. As long as they sell out every game--it's all good.
-
Well, the BoB just pulled off possibly the most Texans move that the Texans have ever Texan'd.
Clowney traded to Seattle for a 3rd round pick and 2 backup linebackers.

The league office should start mandating breathalyzer tests prior to trades.

Nice to see McNair the younger honoring his father’s legacy of incompetence.

Texans would have received a 3rd round comp pick for simply letting Clowney walk. Now if Seattle doesn't re-sign him, they essentially get the pick they traded back. One of the players, former Browns bust Barkevious Mingo, has been so bad in camp and preseason games that he was most likely going to be cut.

When the Astros were shitty, it was tolerable because you knew it was part of a plan to succeed in the future. With the Texans it's just their nature to be shitty. There is no evidence of any process or plan. Their brain trust is mentally challenged. But hey, it's a money maker for the owners!
-
Oh, great, so now we learn that the Chargers are letting Gordon look for a trade. Wouldn't Clowney for Gordon have made sense for both teams? Instead we're wrapping up the man with the bong-mask.
-
Just traded our next 2 first round picks, a 2nd rounder, Davenport and Bademosi to Miami for Tunsil, Kenny Stills, and a 4th round pick.
It fills a huge need, but that's a massive overpay. Hell of an offseason to decide to let BoB play GM.
-
They get a 3rd-rounder for Clowney and then give up two 1st-rounders for Tunsil? Do they understand how arithmetic works?
-
Fans: The Clowney trade was the worst deal in Texans history!
BOB: LOL hold my beer.
-
BOB is basically a walking tragi-comic performance about a woefully inept man who deludes himself into thinking he is the next Bill Belichick and who is fortunate enough to link up with a rich group of merry baboons who become enamored with his buttchin and fiery coach soliloquies and clap and bang symbols together while he throws feces against the wall.

Don’t be a dumas, BOB went to BROWN. He had to throw in about half of JD’s $15mm salary to balance the scales and get it done.

Remember his quote after he fired his handpicked GM after 1 year? When asked who was going to be handling discussions with other GMs and such, BoB replies "They know who to call."
Seattle's GM sure as fuck knows exactly who to call.

At least he got something in return on the second deal.

Indeed, it could have gone either way. If Texas converts in the red zone in the first quarter, the game might have turned out very differently. Like I said, I love Ehlinger. He's a leader and one helluva QB. In my opinion, Texas is indeed back. It's clear beyond cavil that, after considering your Georgia asswhipping in the bowl game and this game with LSU, the difference betwen the SEC and Texas is zero.

Tennessee Titans looked really good in beating the overrated Browns today.

My youngest brother lives close to Knoxville. I check their media websites after losses and close calls. That's the most delusional fan base in the country, with the possible exception of Notre Dame disciples. Even their regular beat writers and local talk radio guys are homers. After the loss to Georgia Southern, some of them were comparing the loss to some of the greatest recent upsets in college football history. And the comments are full of hyperbole sky is falling gotta fire the coach after one game. I revel in it, because I have hated those motherfuckers since the days of Bill Battle. They see their program as elite, which belies the truth.

Drops? They would have all been spectacular catches.
-
It will be interesting to see how much Watson's leg stiffens up at the half. I'm pretty sure he took a helmet to the knee of that TD drive.
-
Apparently it's his lower back (discomfort) and not his leg. I thought the same as you, Austro
Yeah HH, they would have been great catches, but he got 2 hands on all of them and that's why he makes the big bucks. And frankly his hands are great enough that he could/should have caught them all. He's spoiled us that way.

So if Jake Marisnick is laid out in a full dive to try to catch a line drive, and he just missed it, you're comfortable calling it an error?

If he did it 3 times in the first 5 innings I'd probably say WTF? then too. Those were plays we've seen Hop make countless times, it was striking to see him not make them, is all.
-
Texans haven't needed the help but the refs gave them 15 seconds at the end of the half. Cost the Saints a chance to get closer for the field goal attempt.
-
Texans could really use an edge rusher...a Jadaveon Clowney type.

Texans could really use an edge rusher...a Jadaveon Clowney type.
They'll be able to replace him with one of their first-round picks.

Texans have played spiritedly tonight, but their defense is just terrible. They cannot rush the passer, and they cannot cover receivers. That's a bad combination.

And that terrible defense is completely gassed entering the 4Q.

The Chiefs game in a few weeks should be especially entertaining.

Watson is not going to last five games with that line and that head coach.

So the secondary can't cover, but they're making up for it by not tackling.

Nice block, Tunsil

I have to assume that he didn't hear the snap. I sure hope that's the reason, because he got smoked.

He also held and hands to the face but wasn't flagged so there's that.

Fucking awful.

OL, secondary and coaching are all terrible. What year is this again?
Every year, I guess.

He was trying to tackle the guy but couldn’t do that either. He got beat so bad he couldn’t even hold.

Miami is going to clean up in next year's draft. They may have the first two picks.

Gotta give the new guys a chance to get to know the team. They ought to be good to go by week 8.

Watson is amazing.

I'll be damned.

Holy crap?!?!? Oh wait.... Do it over. Don't miss this time.

That throw was unbelievable.
And so was that penalty.
The NFL is just about unwatchable because of shit like that.

Also, this broadcast on ESPN is fucking horrendous.

Also amazing is the coaches handing the Saints an automatic 10 yards with 6 seconds left to set up that FG.

That field goal might have been good even if Brees had missed that last pass.

That field goal might have been good even if Brees had missed that last pass.
It cleared by about three feet, so...no.

Stupid fuck. 15 seconds at the end of the first half is 3 points for the Saints. That's enough to have put it out of reach at the end.

I’ll give the Texans this: they scored touchdowns tonight. Last year they were the field goal kings. They’re not going to beat people with that defense, but the offense put the ball in the end zone.

Three dudes way deep. What were they thinking. Fucking depressing.
It's almost like they didn't know the Saints had a time out.

It’s Watson’s back that bothering him, not the leg, BTW. Carlos Correa would already be on the IR.

Not really Homer. Brees picks up another 15 yards with the extra 15 seconds and their kicker doesn’t miss from 40.
-
It's really sad how whiny Saints fans have become. They are insufferable. You want to actively root against them when not playing your team.
-
That bit (if that is what is being discussed) at the end of the first half didn’t hurt the Saints. If they kept playing, their little two yard gain to get the first down would have taken up more time than the rules/refs took from them.
There’s something to HH’s point. I’ve always liked the Saints, but the whining has gone past the point of reasonableness.

Peyton didn't do anything to curb that with his numerous comments after the NFC CG.
Nevermind that the game didn't end on that play, his team gave up points at the end of regulation, and got the ball first in OT.
-
I'll just take this opportunity to point out that the Texans this week signed center Nick Martin to an extension placing him among the top three paid at the position league wide.
Last year, PFF graded him fifth. Fifth in the league?! No. Fifth in the division. A division of four teams.
-

These are the GOOD players they let walk for no reason. We’re not even discussing the terrible picks they’ve made on OL over the last five years or so.

This Chargers team is there for the taking. It’s a shame that the customary bed-shitting in the 3rd quarter will put this one beyond reach.

Bed shitting throughout, not just the 3rd quarter.
This team mirrors BOB: flashes of decency, but ultimately stupid and undisciplined under stress. Mediocrity is their ceiling.

Unfortunately, that's an apt description of the club's management as well, meaning that there is no reason to ever expect any improvement.

Exactly. And yet, with some better strategy at the end of the season opener, they’d be 3-0 a including two wins on the road against tough opponents.
Crazy.

Their coaches sometimes make them do inexplicable things, and they sometimes do dumb things on their own, but I'll give them one thing: the guys on the field don't quit.

What the Texans have managed to do better so far this year is score touchdowns in the red zone. Last year they would have kicked four field goals and lost this game 20-18. They still have to overcome BoB’s game management, but they’re putting it he ball in the end zone.

The Browns, down by a TD, picked the Rams with 2+ minutes remaining and 3 timeouts. They moved down the field and had 1st and goal with all timeouts remaining. They too their 1st timeout on 4th and goal.
Of for BOB to have such calmness in the face of the clock.

They ran a draw play on 4th and 9 earlier in the fourth quarter AFTER they failed to challenge a very obvious defensive pass interference that wasn't called. The Browns head coach had BOB hold his beer last night.

Nope. But the clock management and lack of panic was exemplary. This Texans roster likely scores there, but they’d never actually get there with the time...or timeouts...to do it.

Point of order: Texans fans have to be the most pessismistic in the league. It seems that a few of you simply follow the team even they they cause you much heartburn over how they are coached and run. Is the heartburn worth it? As a member of Who Dat Nation, I'm here to extend an olive branch and an invitation to switch your allegiance to the New Orleans Saints!!!

I know the Lions fan base well. They lack hope in ever winning again. There's a big difference between hopelessness and pessimism. Contrast the Lions fan base with that of the Browns. The Browns fan base is rabid and seriously beleives that they can compete this year. They're hopeful in spite of the early evidence to the contrary.

One man's pessimism is another man's realism.

Suit yourself. Wallow in your misery. We'll just have to read many more comments from people who never coached or played about BOB being an idiot and the club's numbnuts owner and GM. I'll take Sean Payton any day of the week.

I am well aware that the Texans presently have no GM. However, I wasn't referencing a particular GM but rather y'alls dislike of the ones that you have had. I don't expect y'all to agree with and like him or her. That's because, despite being bereft of evidence supporting your position, most of you truly believe that you know more than the professionals.

What a horrid statement. Wallow in your misery? Astros fans (us in particular) wallowed in a lot of misery I guess we should have jumped on any number of other teams wagons. I'd never seriously tell a fan to leave the one they support. Part of supporting your team is being honest about them.
And if I remember correctly, a lot of your "nation" wore bags on their heads when Hebert was their QB. Aren't they the originators of the bagheads??
But, I will give you the fact that Sean Payton is a good coach.

You obviously missed my point. A group of you (and you know who you are) say almost nothing but negative things about the team. I'm not even sure that some of you are really Texans fans down deep. Perhaps the Tennessee Titans nee' Houston Oilers really is your team. The stark difference between the misery that we've all endured as Astros fans, I've heard very little of comments like "the GM's an idiot. AJ's lineups and pitcher usage is horrible. etc. ad nauseum." We maintained a positive outlook during the Astros darkest days. I've heard nothing positive about the Texans. You should be grateful that it appears that you've got a QB. Cheer about that.

I'm not really a fan of the Texans, and even less of a fan of the Cowboys, but I still watch most of their games. I root for the players not the owners or the coaches or the GMs. The Cowboys look pretty good this year. The Texans are better than I expected. The Saints are only interesting because of Brees, although Kamara is pretty awesome.
-
Ummm, I'm not a Texans fan. But, I still think you are wrong for saying what you did.
I can live with that, but we'll have to agree to disagree. All I did was suggest an alternative since they were constantly dissatisfied with the club's direction and never say anything positive.

BoB just pulled his weekly "Holy shit, what the fuck are you doing?" decision. It may be his best one since he put JJ Watt in the wildcat formation at the goal line.

Yep. He had help though. Would have been nice to have the 2 timeouts BoB wasted.

Oh, BOB gets an F for his performance today too. But this was Watson's worst game since his rookie year. Maybe his worst ever.

I was told our coach/GM/OC was an offensive genius. . . It’s hard to follow everything watching live, but it seemed like no one was open yet all the panthers were in our backfield, which is an unlikely combination if a team has reasonably competent players and coaches.

BOB is probably the worst offensive coach in the last 30 years in the NFL, and most assuredly the worst developer of QBs in the history of football. Whoever thought he was some sort of offensive guru was sniffing glue.

His offensive scheme is weak, deshaun seems to excel in spite of him at times, he’s not a defensive guy, he’s not a competent game manager, his challenge rate is subpar... so, what is it you say you do here, Bill?

4 minutes left in the first half, scored tied 3-3...Texans recover fumble at Panthers 46 yard line. Four plays later, they have 2nd and 4 at the 18 yard line driving for a lead nearing the 2-minute warning...BOB thinks that's the perfect time for someone *other* than Deshaun Watson to throw a pass, so he calls for a wide receiver throwback pass from Deandre Hopkins, who promptly lobs a dying quail up the air for an easy interception, which is run back to the 46 yard line. Panthers go in to score the TD in the final minute instead and take a 10-3 lead into the half.
It wasn't BOBs worst mistake of the game...after all, we were only halfway through.

Ah, yes. That's the stuff.

Today’s umpire is losing his voice because there are sooooo many penalties.

A week after possibly his worst game as a pro, Watson's having his best. Perfect QB rating with 6:24 to go. Offense has been great today.

They are doing their best to make an easy victory hard.

Bill O'Brien. Un. Fucking. Believable. It's mindboggling that someone could be so fucking stupid at football.

Why the fuck is Fairbairn still on this team?
-
Texas should still be leading this game by a field goal, instead they trail. 100% because of Fairbairn.

Don't forget about Fuller.

Don't forget about Fuller.
He's dropped four touchdown passes. Hopkins dropped one, which then resulted in a turnover inside the 10 yard line.
-
Will they even let him kick? Even if he makes it, he should be gone by Monday.
-
Gutsy move by BOB. The number-of-plays and time-of-possession stats are amazingly one-sided. KC's defense is pretty bad.
-

I guess that tells you all you need to know about Fairbairn.
Good win. Defense stepped up huge in the 2H, and the Texans continue to run the ball far better than I think anyone thought they could.

It would have been a real shame to lose that one. Congrats to them and hope that some of the injuries aren’t too serious.

I give BOB credit for actually running the ball in Q4, when they could’ve continue to shred that defensive secondary.

BOB and the staff coached a good game. The defense seemed to change the strategy in the 2nd half from allowing the chiefs to catch anything under 15 yards, which was an improvement. The Texans left a lot of points on the field and still won fairly convincingly for a road win in the NFL.
I’m bummed about Howard. The line has been improving and gelling, and he’ll now miss a year it seems.
If you don’t have a kicker trustworthy enough to attempt a 45 yarder in good conditions to seal a win, you don’t have a kicker.

-
The only truly idiotic thing BOB did was give Mahomes another down, and that of course led to a touchdown.
Otherwise, I thought this was about as well coached a game as you could possibly hope to see. The RPO with the TEs was a new wrinkle that the Chiefs had no answer for.

BoB stepping on his dick early. Clear time to challenge, and he's fucking silent.

Now the Texans royally fucked by incompetent officiating...touchdown taken off the board and have to settle for a field goal.

Back to kicking field goals. Not gonna get it down, especially when the Colts have this nobody named T.Y. Hilton who has appeared out of nowhere. Where'd they find this guy?
-
If you're not going to cover the receivers anyway, you might as well blitz a few guys, right?

Third and long against this defense, absolutely no problem. They will either commit a penalty or leave someone wide open with a lot of room to run.

I can sort of see the safety logic, but not using the TOs before the 2 minute warning is bizarre. It’s cost them 11 seconds that every dumbshit on the sidelines should have predicted.
-
What about calling a timeout to take the safety?
-

The safety was absolutely the right move. That he didn't know to do it, and had to call time out to tell his team, is just dumbfuckery coaching.
-

And even after that, the punter dances around in the end zone for a few seconds before stepping out. It's just 3 or 4 seconds, but it still demonstrates a lack of awareness of what's going on.

It cost them about 5 seconds. But still...

That's what I was wondering....what the fuck was Anger thinking. I wouldn't have even caught the snap, just snap it out of bounds and not take any chances.

No, Indy punted at 1:49 instead of at 2:00. It didn’t matter though, the Colts fucking own them and were destined to win this game.

It would have been 3rd down at 2:00, correct? They still would have run one play after the 2-minute warning. Still, you gave up 10-seconds on the false start, then missed the play down field that resulted in the interception. Time when you got the ball on your own 37 with 1:40 left was not the problem. Too many penalties, and too many field goals after having first and goal.

The refs stealing 4 points didn’t help. A lot of dick-stepping by the Texans, but it’s a completely different end to the game if it’s 27-28 going into the last 2 minutes.
-
BOB called timeout #1 for the safety, then timeout #2 would have been after 1st down, timeout #3 after 2nd down, then a clock rundown to the two-minute warning after third down.
Not a big deal; it’s just further evidence how simple, basic things are beyond their grasp.
-
BoB (11), Anger (3) and Tunsil (10) cost them 24 seconds in the last ~2 minutes.
Not why they lost, but it's not winning football either.

They got fucked out of four points, no question. But it was still there for the taking and they just didn't.

It’s probably why it’s so frustrating. Even with the mess they are, they could so easily be 7-0.

BOB on it early today. The Raiders haven’t stopped the run all day so, on 3rd & 1, he pulls Hyde (who just run for 6) and tries a trick, reverse play. A holding penalty and a sack later, we’re punting from our own end zone.

That kick to the face was absolutely on purpose.

Pretty gutty win there with that MASH unit going, and what a final drive to burn the clock!
-
That was a very nice win. Watson is unreal. So much for picking up Fells as our "blocking TE". Hyde runs like a fucking man.

There’s definitely a “you can run but you can’t Hyde” marketing opportunity here.

I have no idea who Mitchell Jr. is but he has no business being on the field.

That was one of the most creative drives of BOB’s tenure. The Jags were flummoxed by the end.
Too bad it was punctuated with a typical miscue.

Good win by the Texans today. Rest up.

0 penalties on the defense today, I believe. Our new CB had a hell of a game. Passrush finally showed up in the 2nd half, and they held Fournette to his fewest scrimmage yards of the year.
I'll give BoB and the scouts a ton of credit: I was totally wrong about Howard, thought he'd be a project. He's by far the best rookie OL in the NFL.

Defense really stepped up in the second half. I told Mrs. Hawk middle of the 4Q, "I can't remember the last time the Texans has a takeaway". They proceeded to get four in the next eight plays.

It was. I don’t follow the specific prognoses that closely, but I’d love to see those DBs, Tunsil and Fuller back. Need em all to make a playoff push.

Bye week, then the Ravens followed by the Colts on a Thursday night. That's going to be a big game!

The Thursday night affair could result in Brian Hoyer starting at NRG for the first time since he was on the wrong side of a 30-0 playoff game and, unfortunately, playing for the Texans.

Didn’t “Hoyer” become a verb with severely negative connotations?
If he does play against us, I bet he won’t Hoyer it up this time.

The NFL has no fucking balls. Just admit that sometimes officials can be dead wrong.
-
Ok, why even allow PI to be challenged if you're just going to spit in people's eyes when they challenge?
-
Just from my personal observation, it seems like the more MLB implements technology, the better the umpiring on the field gets. Sure, sometimes it's bad, sometimes it's terrible, but across the board it seems to be getting incrementally better.
The NFL is most definitely going in the other direction. I used to be pretty happy with the officiating week to week, whether I was watching games I was invested in or not. This year in particular, the officiating is worse than it has ever been that I can remember. The more they implement technology, the worse it gets.
It's at the point where it's nearing NBA level bad, and that means unwatchably bad.

Our offense genius head coach seemed surprised that the Ravens blitzed early and often and had no scheme to offset or counteract it. Of course, the Texans were coming off a bye and the ravens blitz more than any other team in the league, so draw whatever conclusions you see fit.

Thursday night games are the worst game day experiences there are. Even Monday night is better, and Monday nights are pretty bad. I don’t know why the NFL continues to insist on them when it’s universally hated by players and fans.

They've partnered with one or more of the networks to put on the Thursday games since 2014. They still show them on the NFL Network but they're also shown on the network that has the rights. For a few years it was split between NBC and CBS but now it's Fox exclusively.
