That stinks. RIP
-
That’s terrible. I always liked Luis Valbuena. The article didn’t mention what family he is survived by, but I feel horrible for them. 33 years old.
-
Total bummer. He was a good Astro.
-
Man, fuck this. I'll always remember the game against the Rangers where he started bat flipping everything just to piss them off. RIP Valbuena

That is devastating news.
-
Awful news. I had forgotten Castillo's brief stint with the Astros in '08.
-
I always enjoyed Valbuena. He seemed like one of the first indications that Luhnow et al knew what they were doing: giving up Fowler for him and Dan Straily was one of the first moves that actually moved the on-field club in a positive direction while also giving the farm some depth.

It seems every off season there is at one or two players (astros or other) who are dying in car/boat/plane accidents
Car Boat Plane
Yordano Ventura Jose Fernandez Thurman Munson
Andy Marte Tim Crews Roberto Clemente
Nick Adenhart Steve Olin Cory Lidle
Oscar Tavarez Roy Halladay
Kerry Robinson
Andujar Cedeno
Miguel Gonzalez
Jose Oliva
Jair Capellan
The Dominican Republic has the highest rate of road traffic deaths in the Americas and one of the highest rates in the world, according to a 2015 road safety analysis from the World Health Organization. The Dominican Republic road traffic death rate of 29.3 per 100,000 people is almost three times higher than in the United States.
Rest in Peace Luis Valbueana and Jose Castillo.
Be safe.

Always liked him as an Astro. This sucks.

Awful, awful news.

Morbid given the circumstances but I'm fascinated with your table. Added a few names to it...

Just to note the Valbuena/Castillo deaths occurred in Venezuela...

An update from Venezuela, where criminals regularly throw rocks into roads to cause crashes and rob victims. Two in the SUV survived. Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo, however, were not wearing seatbelts and died when ejected from the vehicle.

My favorite Valbuena memory was a 9th inning save-spoiling go-ahead blast off Diaz a few years back. Might've been one of his last abs as an Astro, come to think of it. Valbuena had style.
-
I was going to add Hubbs, but Nate is too quick.
No seat belts? Damn.

Yes Nate, morbid indeed.
Appreciate your assistance and precision --- I made the list because it rankles me that every year, it seems like, there is a new tragedy.
My hope is this becomes a list that is not added to for decades to come.. Wouldn' t that be a minor miracle?

well said. and agree

Disgusting.

Wasn’t that what happened to Yordano Ventura too? Or at least, he was robbed while he lay dying in the road.

The latter is what I recall. Ventura was allegedly driving very recklessly.
