Damn, damn, damn. WTF Giles? Motherefuck!

Did Hernandez go to 2nd?
-
Hernandez (potential winning run) takes low, then ball 2 is a wp advancing the runner to 2nd, fouls a FB into the stands, ball 3 is outside, 3-1 pitch is laced into right, throw home not in time.
Tie game.
Astros strung by another 2 out walk
Giles done

Laddies and Gentlemen, I present to you the 2017 World Series. It is always going to be this nail biting. It is a glorious game.

Bats heat up, bullpen shits the bed.

Of course.

It's not glorious. This is abject failure.
-
Gotta keep it tied.
-
Giles is a total headcase. He is not a closer. I've been trying to tell you necks that all year.
OTOH, Kike is a real player. I've been trying to tell you necks that for, what, six years?

This is sooooo the history of the Astros, right now..... I thought we were past this shit.

I don't fucking believe this. Now I'm expecting to see that classic three-player head-over-heels Keystone Kops thing from 2013.

Devo will never throw a strike after that throw to second

Everyone comparing this to 2005 and thinking this team is out of the series regardless of tonight’s outcome needs to grow a pair and sack up. The Astros are capable of kicking any team in baseball’s ass for an extended stretch and that includes the Dodgers.

Thanks. This is the most talented Astros team in the club’s history. I don’t care who they are facing, the only thing that stops them is themselves. No matter how much Smoltz and the entire world wants to talk up the Dodgers bullpen and starting rotation. Are they good? Sure. So are the Astros. As A-Rod said before game 1, it’s two goliaths doing battle.

The Astros don't usually win this kind of game. Not in the '80s or 90's or the naughties. In fact, losing big games in spectacular fashion was something like a franchise tradition.
All that shit is over. This is a whole other deal. These Astros can accomplish anything.

I get it. I’ve lived in Houston all my life and remember all the bonecrushing losses from the Oilers, Astros and Rockets. But the Rockets had to do it the hard way in 94 and that’s just the way these kind of breakthroughs go. Look no further than the Cubs last year, they had to overcome a 3-1 deficit to end the curse. Or the RedSox coming back from 3-0 to beat the Yankees the year they broke theirs.
-
Holy shit. What a game.

As the game wore on that kept popping up as a "this is going to give me an ulcer moment".
Turns out the entire rest of the game did that too.
Agree with above on Harris. So important.
And my goodness did the first 3 batters B11 tattoo pitches off Devo. And what a battle to get Puig.
Now, somebody in Houston needs to go bolt the roof closed. The Dodgers haven't heard a real postseason crowd yet

Woke up my father in law (he lives upstairs) in the ninth, frightened the cats in the 10th. I think the kids slept thru it. By the 11th my wife was too stressed so she went to bed. I woke her up to tell the news (she wasn't acutely asleep, just closing her eyes teeing no to stress); she ran to the living room and watched the replay with me.
Went to bed well after MN, wide awake by 0430.
Gonna crash this afternoon I'm sure, but for now still in the stratosphere.

He's the man.
Somebody listed all the relievers we've gotten to, turns out the other side is trying to do the same to our guys.
Multi-inning save attempts don't bother me. If he's you're best, go with him and live with the results.

One of the most interesting things to watch in the series will be how Hinch uses Giles.
-
I’ll say again, don’t give up in him. The tying hit was a shiftfuck. We’ll need him.
I don't think Giles pitched that bad. He challenged Puig with a 2-run lead, which I want him to do, and then got the next two. The 2-out walk is what hurt him, and I think he fell in love with his slider there. Then the wild pitch and a groundball that would have been routine in normal fielding position. And like it or not, he will pitch again this series, likely in a crucial situation. So everyone better get used to the idea.
-
I take the Giles/Selig thing as Ken is the anti-Selig, helping bring wins to the Astros rather than open roofs in the WS and home games in Milwaukee while the lights are still out in Houston.
-

I hope he pitches often. Means we are in the game. Prior to last night Dodgers had not lost this season when trailing after 8. 98-0. That is a little hard to believe. https://twitter.com/ESPNStatsInfo/status/923388650150354944

Hinch:
You have to believe in what they can do, not what they're doing. If you respond to every bad game or tough game, you'll bounce these guys around and ruin their confidence in a heartbeat. [Springer] is one of our best players. And there's no need to panic over a bad night against Clayton Kershaw.
-
Some worthy quotes post-game:
*Brian McCann:
That's the craziest game I've ever played in. It was awesome. That's the beauty of baseball. That's why it's the best sport in the world. You don't see drama go on as long as this anywhere else. That's why it's America's pastime.
Correa:
What Altuve does on the field doesn't even impress me anymore. I kind of expect him to do stuff like that. That homer he hit was a game-changer right there, even for me. I was so focused and pumped, it changed my at-bat completely.
*Ken Giles, who blew the save opportunity:
My confidence is not damaged, I flat-out need to execute.
-
Great TZ!
Way to strap on!
-
I got no problem with Giles. As HH said, he pitched pretty well and made a couple mistakes. I don't know if 2 innings is his best use but I'll be fine with him in the same scenario.

Agree, up until the walk he'd been fine. Felt like he had run out of gas, he was all over the place starting with the batter he walked.

Smoltz, who has been awesome throughout the playoffs, had a fantastic point that Springer’s effort to move the runner over basically fixed his swing.

Didn't see it mentioned here, but Verlander came back out of the locker room (dude has some seriously hairy shoulders) and shouted into the dugout. After the game, he was asked what he said and he was just telling them that they've "got this!"
Amazing esprit de corps here. Everyone on the same page and no one preening their own home runs (or outfield catches) to make themselves the story. Compare Culberson's dance of the sugar plum fairy around the bases after his non-tying homer in the 11th, vs. how the entire Astros team reacted to multiple moments.
Also, I think Puig is still stand at the plate following his 10th inning homer. So nice that he stuck around long enough to whiff at a slider in the dirt to end it in the 11th.

Didn't see it mentioned here, but Verlander came back out of the locker room (dude has some seriously hairy shoulders) and shouted into the dugout. After the game, he was asked what he said and he was just telling them that they've "got this!"

In the post game the MLB network guys asked Marwin what Verlander said and Marwin replied that he couldn't repeat it.

Did anyone else see Altuve, following his homer, tell Correa “now you go hit one”?

Smoltz, who has been awesome throughout the playoffs, had a fantastic point that Springer’s effort to move the runner over basically fixed his swing.
I think his swing had been "fixed" before that. He said afterwards that he simply slowed everything down, which is why he was able to wait on a curveball and bash it down the line past a stumbling homeless person Turner.

Coach of the Year!

Agree, up until the walk he'd been fine. Felt like he had run out of gas, he was all over the place starting with the batter he walked.
Yeah, mid-30's on pitch count for Giles (or any other closer) is thin ice. I still like Giles in a 3-4 out scenario.

Hinch:
You have to believe in what they can do, not what they're doing. If you respond to every bad game or tough game, you'll bounce these guys around and ruin their confidence in a heartbeat. [Springer] is one of our best players. And there's no need to panic over a bad night against Clayton Kershaw.
This should be pinned on the TZ.

I found a quote in Nightengale's USA Today writeup.
Well, except for starter Justin Verlander, coming up to the dugout after the Astros had blown a 5-3 lead in the 10th, and screaming: “Let’s bleeping go. We got this. Keep bleeping raking.’’

Hinch's "people" skills are elite.

Smoltz was pointing out, astutely/obviously, last night that a few off games in a 162-game season is no big deal, because the numbers will be there at the end of the season. In a short series, it gets magnified. Glad to have Hinch at the controls, who has made arguably only one mistake - pulling McCullers in Game 4 of the ALSC - but that looked like a mistake only in the full glare of hindsight.
He is calmness personified in the dugout.

Not only people skills. He knows not to give up on guys who have done it all year merely because of a bad stretch.

I might buy a shirt they simply reads “strap on and vaunt” but would probably refrain from wearing it at the corner of Fairview and Grant.

That's probably one of the few places you could get away with it.

Yes. I don't believe there are any schools or Chuckie Cheeses within 500 feet of that spot.

In case you don't want to go back a re-read all 40-something pages of this here GZ thread, the NY Times posted a nice inning-by-inning digest (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/25/sports/world-series-dodgers-astros.html).

But we'd have to add the footnote:
*except for McCullers, who's a lazy, me-first primadonna with a ten cent head.

Exactly what he was in September. Looking down the barrel of not making the playoff roster accomplished what words could not. He stepped up.

If you aren't worn out reading about the game, Jayson Stark has a good article detailing the madness that was game 2.

Posnaski's article (http://m.dodgers.mlb.com/news/article/259714888/game-2-filled-with-crazy-moments/) about Game 2 is really good.

Bauman's writeup (https://www.theringer.com/2017/10/26/16551894/houston-astros-los-angeles-dodgers-world-series-game-2-epic) is quite good as well. I particularly liked this line: The intensity of playoff baseball lies in anxiety over what could happen but rarely does, but in the last three innings of Game 2, it all happened, without cessation.

Great line. That's exactly how it felt.

Posnaski's done a good job covering the Astros for the WS.

I think this applies to more than just baseball.

It was an ordinary World Series game... and then the murders began.

Agreed. Best of the bunch, I'd say. He captured the rollercoaster perfectly.
