Goons on Fox claiming this should be a Yankee win because they're the team that doesn't have any distractions...like needing to play well.

Hard to argue with that logic.

Goons on the PBP and Color:

This game is all about Luis Severino and what a magical season he's had.

What distractions were they talking about?

The fact that they want to play well.  Apparently this stage appears too big for Verlander and the Astros and they might not be able to deal with it.  Essentially this is a MUST win for the Astros, so the Yankees can play free and lose, as they're right where they want to be.

At least we won't have to waste any time flipping back and forth between this game and the UT-OU game.

I don’t know if I hate A-Rod more as a player or analyst.  His overly-whitened teeth are distracting to say the least.

I love how his at-bat meant that all Yankees were going to have long battles all afternoon.  5 pitches later, inning over.

He’s a fly-ball pitcher in a bandbox.  Dead man walking.  I don’t know why I’m even watching...or why they’re even bothering to play.

There was so much that had to go right to make that play.  It's no wonder they sent Gardner.

True, and the Astros executed but didn't do so flawlessly. Reddick's throw caused Correa's momentum to drift towards the first base side, which pulled his throw a couple feet off the bag. I'm not bagging on the  Astros' play, just saying that Gardner would have been toast if the relay went off without a hitch. The 3B coach should have held him at 2nd

I thought the quick throw by Reddick was key, if he took the time to make a perfect throw they probably wouldn't have got it to third in time.

The reason to leave the roof closed is because it enhances the Astros homefield advantage, AND its the way 99% of their home games are played after June. It would therefore be a disadvantage to force them to play important post-season games with the roof open.  And only a dickless  mouth breathing asshole would force them to do so.
Sincerely,

So does Nitto Tires sponsor the bullpen, or do the relievers just write tire graffiti on their wall?

Sanchez: Takes breaking ball for strike 1, 2 years pass before second pitch is popped to shallow center (fielded by reddick), didi was going on the pitch,  scampered back. .

2 down.

Verlander still in
Judge – strike 96 mph FB, foul, ball, ball, ball, F8
Gregorius – single to left
Sanchez – strike, pop up shallow center/right – Reddick catches
Bird – foul back, ball, strike swinging, foul, ball, 4-3
1-1

Bird: fouls one back,  then takes a slider down,  whiffsmisses 97 mph inside heater,  fouls back a high heater,  lays off another high one just out of the zone,  then hits a SLOW roller ingrown the shift that Correa fields and gets him 6-3.

Bottom 9.
Tie ballgame.

Correa: takes 99 high/ away,  the 100 for ball 2, takes a slider for strike 1, ball 3 is a curve outside,  fouls a heater to bring the count full,  then hits one to the gap in right,  Altuve scores easily from 1st on a routine play that will work every time.

Astros win 2-1, lead
ACLS 2-0.

B9:
Chapman in
Reddick – ball inside, strike swinging, bunts – pop foul, swinging strike on slider low and away
Altuve – single to center
Correa – (throws to first), ball outside, (throws to first), ball outside, strike, ball, foul, (throws to first), lines to gap between center and right – throw to Gregorius at second as Correa slides into second, Altuve keeps running, throw beats him to the plate but Sanchez drops it and Altuve touches the plate!

Not hindsight at all. I said it before the ball was hit. We were debating whether to start Altuve on the 3-2. He did not, but if he had, he would have scored standing up.

I love Pettis.   I can't remember a MLB 3rd base coach having a "better" year.   It feels like he is hitting (sending) at about a 98.9% clip.

Like umping, 3rd base coaches almost always get crapped on.    People (not here) were all over Pettis the last 2 years, but he has been near perfect this season.

I've never felt this way after a ballgame. '04 NLCS game 5 would be the closest, but I was just bandwagoning that year. Wins like today's are a lot more meaningful after you've stuck it out through the shit years and come out the other side.

On the other hand, things were a lot less stressful during the shit years. If the Astros keep making the playoffs, I'll have a heart attack before my thirtieth birthday.

They put pressure on the defense to execute and the defense failed.

Had the defense prevailed they still have winning run in scoring position.

Please contrast with Gardner's double stretched to the 3rd out at 3B.

The same Marwin who hit .360 in September?

Had the MVP in Perpetuity been less ponderous and slow footed, the Correa home run would have been F9. Had the MVP in Perpetuity made the throw dictated by the situation and standard baseball practice, Altuve would not have scored - might not have been sent.

Prepare to be bombarded with loud and endless reminders that playoff performance plays no part in selection of an MVP.

One thing maybe lost in all this, is that the ninth inning was against one A. Chapman.. he of the seriously wicked fastball.     He saved 22 out of 26 chances in the regular season and was 2 out of 2 in the division series.    He had carved up Reddick before running into the irresistible force that is Jose Altuve.    And the two RBI belong to that guy too big to play shortstop.

All in all what a game.    Game 3 promises to be just as fantastic to see if they can get to CC Sabathia.

I still can't believe I saw what I saw...

I was just thinking if there had been a bigger pitching performance in team history. I can't think of one. Certainly the best one in Astros postseason history, bar none.

Mike Scott's complete game shutout of the fucking Mets and the then God's gift to pitching Dwight Gooden in game 1 of the 1986 NLCS.  5 hits and 14 strikeouts.  THE best postseason pitching performance in Astros history.  Today's is the second best.  Then again Joe Niekro's 10 innings of shutout pitching (yes 10) in the 1980 NLCS is right there too.

I love this team:

"When a guy like Verlander goes out there and throws nine innings and 124 pitches, you want to win that game for him," Correa said. "We took a lot of pride in that. We talked about it in the ninth inning when there was one out. I looked at Altuve and said, 'Hey, we've got to make this happen for him.' And we did. It was huge."

Given the differences in eras, and especially given the recent over-reliance on bullpens in the postseason, this one stands out more, IMO.  But I did not watch the 1986 NLCS.

I do not think his throw contributed. Castro was not that far out, and Judge has a cannon. He made a quick accurate throw to Didi. Sanchez is the goat if someone has to take the blame.

I agree Reddick would have caught Correa’s homer. Judge quit on it.

I think more than anything Gregorius was caught a little flat footed. He didn't think Altuve would go home. Still, Sanchez has to make that pick. He just has to. He didn't. It wasn't that bad of a throw, and he's a Major League catcher. He HAS to make that pick.

At first I thought he might have pulled up to avoid the kid who was reaching over the wall. But looking at it again, I saw that Judge turned his glove over as he neared the wall, like he was protecting himself from the impact. And he never complained or pointed to the kid, he just turned and jogged away.

Scott seemed more completely unhittable---a force of nature, whereas JV seemed to rely more on craft to get the same result. The numbers from the two games are very close, with Scott having one more strikeout. Without resort to actual offensive numbers, I remember the Mets being a more fearsome team, but it's true that nobody pitches complete games anymore. A win in a championship series is a win, but it felt to me like more was at stake in this game. Verlander HAD to win.

What an infuckingcredible whole team effort. The last two slo-mo shots of the telecast—Jose sliding in, the instant rapture of being safe, and the look on McCann’s face running alongside him—made me laugh aloud and get—not gonna lie—a little misty. Correa’s first AB against Chapman. SMH.

The crazy part about Correa's double is that was a quality pitch by Chapman.  99 on the black low and away, and he hits it right where he should.  Just shows you what a special talent Correa is.

Several articles have mentioned Sanchez not taking off the mask.  That had nothing to do with anything.  In the old days, a catcher was taught to take off his mask.  But for the last 30 years, it's been the opposite...leave the mask on, for a variety of reasons.  There is no reasonable argument that his mask, especially the hockey-style worn by Sanchez, somehow affected his ability to catch the ball.

This got me curious. In the 2nd half, Marwin hit .299/.363/.485 with 37 RBI in 63 games. Not nearly as great as his 1st half, but still very good.

He was terrible in August - as was most of the team - with a .619 OPS, though he still managed 12 RBI in 25 games. September was his 2nd-best month of the year as he had a 1.015 OPS.

He has looked absolutely lost and over-anxious in October, swinging at crap and not doing a good job of recognizing breaking stuff. Here's hoping he can turn it around.

No. They are both cutoff men, which is standard defense for every team I ever played on or coached. There is a front cutoff and a back one directly behind him to call out the base to throw to or to handle a throw which gets by the front cutoff man. Because the ball was hit to RCF, the second baseman in the front cutoff, and the SS is behind him as the back cutoff man. This is the way they lined up initially. Perhaps Judge used poor judgment, but it was not a misplay. He deliberately threw it to Didi who was the back cutoff man, and the throw drifted a little toward the bag because his momentum was toward CF.

The key to the whole play.  The throw drifting towards the bag led Gregarious into a position where his ability to complete the throw was impacted by Correa's arrival at second base resulting in the short hop which Sanchez couldn't handle.

Technically, aren't the guys in the outfield actually "relay men", while the cutoff man is the guy near the mound ready to nail a trailing runner?  I seem to recall that's the way they used to phrase it.  I just assumed baseball people got tired of correcting others.

On this particular play, I'm not convinced Judge's throw drifted.  It looked to me like he assumed Altuve would stop at third and thought he had an outside shot at nailing Correa at second.

Only problem here is that Gregorious was nowhere near 2nd when he threw it. He was just trying to hit the cutoff man. Castro was wildly gesturing toward Didi (fucking stupid name)  when Judge turned to throw it in. He was just doing as instructed.

Of course it doesn't, but .363 is a fantastic batting average, and in this case, it's a good snapshot - Marwin batted .363/.440/.575 in September with 17 RBI in 23 games, which is fantastic.

August was the month where he did poorly - .221/.272/.347.

Fair enough. You see what you see.

Castro was wildly gesturing toward Didi (fucking stupid name)  when Judge turned to throw it in. He was just doing as instructed.

Hey! I've got a cousin named Didi.

She's a sweetheart.

Don’t know. Perhaps. The catch is the cutoff, and the throw is the relay. I do not know which is correct, but I always said and wrote “cutoff.”

I do not really care what convinces you. I heard Judge say what he tried to do and did.  No one who ever played even one inning would assume a runner in that situation will be certain to stop.

Does that mean I can watch the game now?

That's cool.  I do not really care if you disagree.

Baseball is like church: many attend, few understand, all are welcome.

Finally, a topic that everyone at OWA can agree on: religion.

I will say it again. RF was a major factor in the game Saturday. Houston exceptional....NYY not so much.

Judge butchered the home run but not the ball in the gap. Gregorius one-hopped Sanchez with lots of time.

Judge said what he did. What you think is irrelevant.
