HI EVERYONE
Has Larry Wayne blocked you yet?
Couldn't the Stros try and get somebody to hold out to 2-1. Like a Frasier. Tell them, hey we like you and Stewart equally. We are taking Stewart 1-1 at 4.5 to 5 million. Should you be still available at 2-1 we'd love to offer you the same package.
Would that be wrong?
Yes, because all 29 other teams aren't passing on them.
If he says he has a 5 million offer and will pass on anything less, teams might go elsewhere

Powers, Kenneth F.
Oh come on. Five minutes on the clock, but they get commercials? Damn.
What do y'all think?
Did Harold Reynolds really say that Appel could be in Houston this year??
Did Harold Reynolds really say that Appel could be in Houston this year??
What do y'all think?
Harold Reynolds is a fool.
So, it time is up, do they lose their pick?
Never mind. Misheard. Bryant's a good choice, but Grays gotta be pissed.
I thought the cubs would have gone for pitching.
Never mind. Misheard. Bryant's a good choice, but Grays gotta be pissed.
So... any guesses as to $ for Appel? I'm gonna say $6m. Maybe Boras found out the Cubs wanted Bryant, so Appel's choice was either #3 money ($5.5?) or $6m.
Seems like they really thought they were getting Appel, though.Who, Cubs? I figured they took Bryant because they wanted him over either pitcher.
Who's the creepy guy announcing the picks?it really does put a damper on the proceedings
Who's the creepy guy announcing the picks?Dunno, but he was still chewing something as he announced the Twins pick.
Dunno, but he was still chewing something as he announced the Twins pick.
Sausage. He's mad the Astros got Appel.
Who, Cubs? I figured they took Bryant because they wanted him over either pitcher.
I hope he chokes on it.
About time, Cleveland. Frazier, eh?
true, but I don't think any of the picks have been stretches so far.
#Astros' Elias said Appel's fastball had better downward movement this season, plus slider, changeup improved, better command. #MLB
#Astros' Luhnow on Appel, making final decision, year of scouting: "We (saw) Mark as the standard to beat."
Luhnow: "Through the scouting year we saw Mark as the pick to beat." They never saw a player who became more appealing than Appel.
Why does that slugnut keep saying the 'two thousand first year player draft'?Well, we all know why. He's a fucking tool.

I really like Luhnow. He just seems to know what he is talking about.
These announcers are fucking homers. I want to hear a "that was a stretch" just once.
With Appel's season over already, no reason he couldn't sign right away.
St Louis at 19 should be interesting. They had been rumored with Manaea. Though not sure if there is enough cash at 2-1 to get him anyways
I can think of one.
Someone finally woke him up and corrected him.
I think he signs relatively fast. In Luhnow I trust.
I agree. I think he signs fast. Wouldn't be surprised if both sides have already agreed on an approxiamte number. The biggest question is how much that is. The 2-1 pick will likely suggest it
So who are we hoping slides to 40? Manaea? Anybody else?
Once again, Reynolds needs to shut up.
San Fran with the first pick they've been shocked about#102 on BA list
Mayo succeeded
I see the Rangers went Oral with their pick.
Keep in mind, Manaea (do doooooo, do doo do) is also a Boras client.
Wow, these picks are pretty much going straight down the list. BAs top 12 already drafted. Stanek is there 13th. Likely soon for him.
ETA
Correction, Dozier was ranked 39th. That would be the only surprise as far as BAs list is concerned
Just got off work. Appel seems like a good pick.
Also, thanks to astrosfan76 and everyone else at the bus ride who've kept us informed the past few months.
Now to see who KC picks.
it just get's worse. I didn't think it could.
Well...
Crap.
Any other lefties worth 40?
Is Wilson considered a hard sign?
Is Wilson considered a hard sign?
Hunter Green?
He was in 2010 (per Minor League Ball anyway): LINK (http://www.minorleagueball.com/mlb-bonus-baby/2012/10/5/3450976/2013-draft-profile-austin-wilson-of-stanford)
A strong commitment to Stanford caused him to slide to the 12th round to the Cardinals. They made an effort to sign him but didn’t meet his demand, which was reportedly north of $4 million.
Haven't heard what his current demands are though.
Was Luhnow involved in 2010 with the Cardinals?
Anyone less interested in being there than Kerry Wood?
Probably pissed he had to pronounce Zastrynzny.
Better than Pedro Astacio's announcement. Ouch.
Better than Pedro Astacio's announcement. Ouch.
FYI Thurman was #44 on BA's draft board.
Probably pissed he had to pronounce Zastrynzny.
going to be fun now that the picks are faster and others rather than slugnut doing the announcing.
Bagwell is still pissed about having to pronounce Kvasnicka...
They didn't announce Freddie Patek when he first came out. I'm a little saddened that I didn't recognize him but pleased that I did wonder who the hell this guy is who can't see over the dais. Hard to recognize a guy when you can only see his forehead I guess.
I had exactly the same reaction: don't they know this guy is completely obscured by the microphones? When they mentioned his name it all made sense.
Is it just the first two rounds tonight?
what time does the draft start tomorrow?
Yes.
Are you guys getting the Baseball America ads? For some reason for voice talent they hired a fellow who has a jarring speech impediment.

No, I haven't noticed that. But I'm spending most of my time watching the hockey game.
spurs are finally up by 6
That's because I quit watching them. And I'm not going back.
Spurs won and Parker's final basket was OMG!!!
You're welcome!
ETA: Oh, well, maybe. Seems there's 5 more "competitive balance" picks. None of which belong to the Astros. Fucking Selig.

Stupid is what it is...
Basically... the 10 smallest-market teams and 10 lowest-revenue teams (if a team qualifies as both, they only qualify for 1 pick) are entered into a lottery for 1 of 6 extra picks between rounds 1 and 2, or 1 of 6 picks between rounds 2 and 3. These picks may be traded...
I wonder if Thurman starts at Lexington or Lancaster
Wouldn't he probably start at a short-season team? Depends on when he signs I imagine. If it's a few weeks they probably would want to start him slow just to get his feet wet.

The chronicle article said mid-July as a time Appel might sign. Something about completing school then. Harold will have to revise his prediction.
The other night on the radio broadcast, Luhnow described the lower minors (below AA) as places where skills are developed and mechanics are addressed, while at AA and AAA, mechanics weren't stressed, but the mental side was. While I assume Appel will not start at AA, I wonder if they see Appel's mechanics as something to be left completely alone and intend a short stay below AA, or whether they have some things they want to address, and he might have a longer time before he reaches AA.

it would be a great feel-good story to sign Cavan. Seems like the Astros could use some good publicity.
I don't think Luhnow or Crane give a shit about any of that.
I'm trying to think of an example of this sort nepotism was a good idea in baseball and not really succeeding.Mike Piazza

Who was taken in the 62nd round. They didn't pass on anyone they liked better to get him.Lies! All lies! It was blatant, pathetic, absolutely abhorrent nepotism, for which there is no place in baseball!
Kent Emanuel LHP - UNC.
With the 74th pick in Round 3, the Astros take Kent Emanuel, LHP UNC Chapel Hill. Mayo calling him a 'pitchability lefty'.AKA doesn't have impressive "stuff" but gets results. Seems like a good get.
Nathan Rode @NathanRode 2m
A scout gave me a Dallas Keuchel comp on LHP Kent Emanuel recently. Fitting since he's been drafted by the #Astros. #mlbdraft

Emanuel is a SR, they will likely get a good discount on this signing.

Emanuel threw 124 pitches Saturday and 51 Monday for a total of 175 over three days for UNC.

Not sure where that's out there, but he's a junior.

Wonder how Bubba feels about advising his boy to turn down HOUs $2M'ish offer now...
Per some of the TCB guys via Twitter, some of the 'signability' guys out there (like Virant, Hinejosa, Ruis, etc. last year) include:
Rayn Boldt (HS OF), Kyle Serrano (HS RHP), Jake Brentz (HS LHP), Connor Jones (HS RHP), Cavan Biggio (HS 2B), and Jordan Sheffield (HS RHP).
Wonder how Bubba feels about advising his boy to turn down HOUs $2M'ish offer now...
I thought the offer was more $1M'ish. What is the slot $ for where he was taken today?
rd 4: 107 Conrad Gregor (1B, Vanderbuilt)
Frankie Piliere:
Gregor I thought would be better this spring. If he goes back to what he was last summer, that's an excellent value
Wow, really thought we would have taken Cavan Biggio by now. That would have seemingly been a value pick there. Do they really want him on another team?
Let's consider the fact that they certainly have inside information on whether Cavan will sign at a certain point.Ah, so the assumption is if he gets drafted now then he's headed to college anyways

#Astros go with Conrad Gregor; have to say that's a surprise in 4th round. Analytical pick, 53 BB this year, hit just 3 HR. #mlbdraft

Which ones, Virant and Hinejosa? IIRC, both went to 4-year colleges so will not be available to go back into the draft until 2015 (or potentially 2014 depending on their age).
I wonder if this signals the end of Delino.
It's a towering achievement.

Kemp could end up being the biggest positive surprise in this draft.cant tell if you're being serious or not. If so, why exactly?
Fucking garbage. BA's mobile site is useless. Keeps ignoring/forgetting that I'm logged in, so won't show me the scouting reports on anybody. A pain in the ass to navigate even on its better days.

Still no Biggio. I don't imagine this means his signing demands will be any different.
The guys were saying he probably won't get picked because of signing issues. Cavan was mentioned with at least 3 other kids, who's names I don't remember.
No collee seniors for the Astros yet, correct? Maybe they worked out slight deals with Conrad or someone else?
Remember last year the Astros took Rio Ruiz in the 8th and then paid him over slot. So it is not out of the possibility until the get out of the top 10 rounds. After that, you pay a fine if you go over the limit.

Former AStros draftee Chad Jones taken by the Reds. He ended up playing football at LSU, then drafted by the NY Giants, got injured and now just got taken in the 9th round. What a story. Good luck to him.
Rd. 10: 287 Austin Nicely, LHP Spotswood HS Grottoes, VA
Nicely suffered a stress reaction in his back last spring and didn't play all of last summer. He returned to the mound in time for late-fall showcases and has been healthy this spring. Nicely's fastball generally sits in the upper-80s, occasionally touching 91 mph. The left-hander also throws a changeup and curveball, both of which need work. Nicely has good athleticism and helped Spotswood High School to a runner-up finish in Virginia's Division III state basketball tournament. In time, Nicely could add velocity as he gets stronger and eventually have three solid offerings. He is committed to Virginia.
Rd. 10: 287 Austin Nicely, LHP Spotswood HS Grottoes, VARanked #342 by BA.
@NathanRode: Interesting the #Astros go for LHP Austin Nicely. Avg FB now, but very projectable. Tough sign away from UVA. #mlbdraft
My good friend is the sports editor for a small paper here in town and covered Kent Emanuel during his HS career. He had this to say about him: Probably a middle of the rotation guy but is polished and should move through the minors quickly. He thinks Astros will shut him down after college season as he's already pitched 120 innings heading into Super Regional this weekend. He says his stuff is not electric but he knows how to pitch and commands well to both sides of the plate. Led ACC in Ks looking all three seasons at UNC. Also has one of the best pickoff moves he's ever seen. What does he feel is his best pitch?
He's going to interview him in about thirty minutes. Any questions you all would like me to pass on? Need to hurry if you got any. Regardless, I'll post his interview when it becomes available.
What does he feel is his best pitch?
What pitch does he feel has the most room for improvement?
What past/present MLB pitcher does he model his game after (if any)?
Did he know the Astros were going to take him? Had they spoken a lot?
What can he tell us about fellow Astro draftee Brian Holberton?
I passed them on. Thanks.Damn. Wanted to find out what his favorite milkshake is from Cookout.
Damn. Wanted to find out what his favorite milkshake is from Cookout.
Done.Cool. While we're on the topic, this is a PSA for anyone who finds themselves driving through North Carolina anytime before 2 am. Go to Cookout (they'll have billboards on I-95, 40, etc). Excellent char-grilled burgers, fries, and around 40 different milkshakes, all of which are ridiculously thick and most of which are fantastic. I prefer the chunkier ones like Reeses or perhaps banana-blueberry, but my wife gets the peanut butter-banana and that may just be the best. Every time we go back home to visit my family, we try to maximize our Cookout trips.
@conorglassey: Hey #Astros fans, 11th-round #mlbdraft RHP Devonte German is a physical beast. Had a scout tell me he'll throw 98 someday.
German is an elite athlete who starred in three sports in high school. As a baseball player, he is still raw and didn't play much on the travel or showcase circuits. A true two-way player, German attracted scouts' attention with his athleticism and promise as an outfielder and on the mound. He throws in the low-90s now and his 6-foot-5, 235-pound frame make it easy for scouts to project him to add even more velocity as he develops. German's combination of speed and strength makes him a potential impact outfielder if a team prefers to develop him as an everyday player. He is committed to Nevada.
Pinero was draft-eligible last year but wasn't picked. The Royals showed interest in him as a nondrafted free agent, but he instead returned for his optional fifth year of high school, making him eligible for selection again. He has a rangy build at 6-foot-6 and 180 pounds, and while he's a solid high school shortstop he'll eventually move to third base. He is an average runner and has a strong arm, so he should be able to make it there. Because of his size and his long arms, Pinero has length to his swing, and he shows good bat speed and power potential. He will likely have to be drafted in the top five rounds to pass on his commitment to Virginia, where he would be a draft-eligible sophomore in 2015.
Rodriguez has a short, thick build at 5-foot-9 and 200 pounds and while he might not have any tools that wow scouts, most like his overall package. He has a compact, quick swing with gap power but enough strength to drive mistakes out of the yard. He's a solid catcher with a strong arm, and his intangibles help his tools play up. He's a natural leader and shows good toughness and a strong work ethic. Rodriguez is also athletic and versatile enough to play second base.Along with 6th-rounder Jacob Nottingham that's at least two catchers described as "athletic" and capable of playing other positions . Three if you count Holberton, who played a lot of OF at UNC.
... He has sound mechanics for a high school pitcher, and the ball comes out of his hand easily. He pitches with average velocity now and figures to add more down the road. He has shown ability to spin a breaking ball. He's not advanced enough right now to take him higher than the 10th round, which won't be nearly enough to lure him away from his commitment to Virginia.
Just drafted a 3B, which got me wondering, have they drafted a single SS yet?
Luhnow on pre-game radio today: He wouldn't be surprised if in five years Appel, and the second and third round picks were 3/5s of the starting rotation.
That would surprise (and disappoint) me. I'd certainly hope to see more than 2 of the following current MiLBers in the rotation in 5 years: Cosart, Foltynewicz, McCullers Jr., Tropeano, Velasquez, Wojciechowski, Buchanan, etc. (not to mention Lyles).

In theory, the Draftees list and Signing Status lists should be complete and correct (I think I may have even spelled most of the draftees names correctly 'this' time...). Let me know if I've missed or mis-transcribed anything... Thanks!Looks great, thanks so much for doing it.

I'll gladly echo this.
If Cosart can't start finding the strike zone he's going to find his way to the bullpen.Another plus of the improved pitching depth - the trickle-down effect will improve the pen in the long run. Seems like the farm has produced a pitiful amount of quality MLB relievers in recent years - Lopez, arguably Wright, and...?

I'm pretty sure neither Lopez (and I'm certain not Wright) were developed by the Houston system. That makes your point that much stronger. You're right. Lopez came off waivers from the Padres (had to look that up) and Wright was a Rule 5 from the Dodgers. Although both made their MLB debuts with the Astros.
Here is source for German's $300K asking price: "The closer they come to ($300,000) the more comfortable I'll feel about signing," he said. (http://blogs.rgj.com/danhinxman/2013/06/08/manogues-german-goes-to-astros-in-11th-round/)

Wright was Rule 5, I think.
His twitter page shows he's trying to find out who the next coach at Nevada will be.
ditto, ditto, ditto+1 more ditto
Yep, from LAD. And though I've got no backup for this, I'm relatively sure he is the only 14-year old to be picked up by a team in the history of the Rule 5 draft (or maybe he was 12 - whatever the case, HOU had batboys that looked older than Wright did back then... probably still do...).

Dear North Carolina dog pile: Congratulations and please do not crush our draft picks. Warmest regards, KG
They followed that pick with another college righty, Andrew Thurman, who also has a chance to fly up the minor league ladder. While he can’t match Appel’s arsenal, he also has power stuff, with a fastball that touched 96 this spring, as well as a breaking ball and plus changeup.
And, for the most part, the Astros did play it “safe” with their early picks. Kent Emanuel has big league quality command, but likely profiles as a back of the rotation starter. But, the good news is that he’ll likely reach that ceiling quickly.
In terms of bats, Houston was able to buy low, so to speak, on Conrad Gregor, who showed blossoming power last summer, but didn’t build on that performance this spring. His plate discipline, defense at first base, and potential for power make him a very intriguing pick at 107th overall. East Carolina slugger Chase McDonald (347th overall) is also a major sleeper pick that could do damage as a professional
Nice. I only saw one AB in the game against Louisville, but he battled a tough lefty and still made solid contact. It was impressive. Now that I think of it, he must not be switch hitter and just bat left while throwing right.
It will be interesting to see if he signed below slot.
You think it is a short-signing?!?

Who's considered a tough sign, though? German, but he only wants $300k, 200 above slot. Maybe Nicely will cost a bit over slot... Just doesn't seem like they need an extra mil or so.
Was thinking the same. Not sure either. More money for International signings?
Money doesn't transfer between draft and international budgets.

Understood. Was just thinking possibly as an Org they have a total budgeted # to spend on signings both from the draft & International signings.
Was thinking this as well. Not like they took a run at McCullers / Ruiz / Virant / Hinejosa types this year (and Clemens doesn't count - not much of a shot a million dollars or so is going to change his mind...).
This would piss me off. I understand completely not spending on free agents at this point, but I'd be pretty friggin' pissed if they have attempted to budget even $0.01 less than they are entitled to spend under the new CBA for Rule 4 draftees and 7/2 signees...
Depends. Budgeting and actually spending are two different things, especially with the draft. I don't think they went into the draft intending to spend less than they're allotted; this would run counter to their stated intention and they did go slightly over last year. But, if they don't have to spend the full amount to get the guys they wanted, they shouldn't give the players more than they're willing to accept. So, if they do sign Appel for significantly under-slot, I won't be offended if they don't spend the full $11.7M. Would they have selected Manaea at #40? I'll probably never know. But there were other consensus first-round types still available at #40; for that matter, when the 3rd round started. I suppose it's possible that they genuinely liked Emanuel better than Jon Denney and all of the other high-ranked guys available at that point... but probably not very likely.

Of course, we should not overlook the possibility that Heyman simply has his head up his ass, and Appel's deal is not anywhere near as low as $6.5m.
Appel reportedly signs for 6.3mm. Can the savings be used to take down the community leaders board?
From Houston’s perspective, Appel’s bonus is $1,440,400 less than the assigned $7,790,400 value for the top pick. That gives the Astros plenty of extra cash to distribute to other draft choices, with potential overpay targets including Virginia high school lefthander Austin Nicely (10th round) and Nevada prep righty Devonte German (11th round).

Thurman signed.
Astros are holding a press conference at 3 to announce the Appel signing. I presume the presser will be shown live at Astros.com, but haven't seen confirmation.
Two drafts in a row that the Astros have dealt with Boras without issue. I think the key is having a competent GM.
I think the hard slotting constraints of the new CBA also plays into this.

Well, that's where the Appel money went.
Well, that's where the Appel money went.
Outstanding work, OSF. Thanks for doing this!
FWIW, Manaea took $3.5MM to reel in, per Callis. (https://twitter.com/jimcallisBA/status/347969590833315842)
If that number was floating around pre-draft, no wonder getting him and Appel was a pipe dream.
But Manaea was a supplemental rd. 1 pick like McCullers, so would the rd. 2 slot apply?
Slightly confused. Were you trying to say it was a pipe dream because he wasn't expensive enough to fall 2-1 or that the Stros didn't have enough money available?
Side note that I came across (Rosenthal tweet): Pre-2009 draft, Houston had a pre-draft deal with Shelby Milller, only to have Luhnow snatch him 2 picks before us. Our consolation prize that year: Mier.

"We thought he was the best baseball player in this Draft," said Astros general manager in charge of scouting Bobby Heck. "This is a true shortstop who stays at shortstop and has defensive ability and some offensive ability as well, and we think he's going to grow into some power."and, on Mier being available when they picked,
"We were elated he was still there," Heck said. "Picking where we did, a lot of it you had to wait for some stuff to fall to us, but it was an excited room when he did."Link (http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090609&content_id=5229144&vkey=news_hou&fext=.jsp&c_id=hou)

Hasn't 18th-rounder Nelubowich signed (though I think I read he had a visa issue to clear up)?
Pretty sure I saw somewhere this weekend that Appel is starting at Tri-Cities?
http://blog.chron.com/ultimateastros/2013/06/23/astros-mark-appel-could-make-pro-debut-in-early-july/I'm gonna try to go if I can figure out what game, make it work, and get tickets.

Alexander. I don't believe drafted players are allowed to go to the DSL.

2010 49th rounder Kenny Diaz started his career in the DSL. Perhaps there's an exception for players drafted out of Puerto Rico?

According to your awesome list, the Astros have only signed one player over slot. Someone seems to be doing their job.
What's with the Carolina boys? They holding out or just taking a break from it all?
They were just ousted from the CWS last weekend, so I'd expect they are catching their breath and will be in the loop sooner than later. There is still plenty of time to sign (15 days), as the deadline this year is June 12 at 5:00 p.m. ET.
July 12? If it's June 12, that Dewhurstian space-time distortion.
I've been pulling that same shit all week, probably the half-dozenth time I've June'd July.........Why July then? (say it out loud and think about it.)
Two. 6th rounder Jacob Nottingham (+$27,800) and 10th rounder Austin Nicely ($470,600). I expect 11th rounder Devonte German will get added to the 'over slot' list as well here sooner than later...
Why July then? (say it out loud and think about it.)
And in the 'blast from a past draft' category, 2010 Astros 19th round draftee signed today for $612K (3rd round pick). You may remember JaCoby and Bubba (his dad) turned down a $1M+ offer (thought to be $1.5M, maybe even approaching $2M) to sign with the Astros in 2010.
And per McTaggart (via Twitter), it appears HOU has also signed its 9th round pick Brian Holbertson.Don't let McTaggart lead you astray with his sloppy fact/spell-checking, it's Holberton. No "s".
Brian McTaggart @brianmctaggart
Catcher Brian Holbertson, Astros' 9th-rd. pick from U. of North Carolina, signed contract on Thursday, mom Tobie told MLB.com
According to the press release he is heading to "rookie league" Tri Cities (http://houston.astros.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130628&content_id=52049726¬ebook_id=52050370&vkey=notebook_hou&c_id=hou) (shhh don't tell the team they got demoted from short season A ball)
Don't let McTaggart lead you astray with his sloppy fact/spell-checking, it's Holberton. No "s".
Chase McDonald to sign.
http://www.reflector.com/sports/ecu/mcdonald-sign-astros-2094963
According to this recent article in the Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://www.timesdispatch.com/sports/college/baseball/virginia-loses-two-pitchers-keeps-one-after-mlb-draft/article_f5a870ed-c806-5880-aad0-94810b5e6fcc.html), 20th-rounder Daniel Pinero will not sign and instead will honor his UVA commitment. No surprise there.I think it's a bit surprising considering the Astros still have a chunk if cash left from the Appel deal and not many HS draftees left to spend it on. Pinero was a guy I thought would get paid. Maybe it's just not all about the Benjamins for him.

Brian Holberton signed for $150,000.

North Carolina C/OF w/some pop & hitting ability. @astrosaj: #Astros sign 9th rounder Brian Holberton for $150k. #mlbdraft
"astrosaj" is his son.
He is on the Greeneville rosterWho, Holberton? Thought he was going to TC?
I think it is Callis', but maybe Holberton was an early breeder, and fathered a twittering prodigy.
Who, Holberton? Thought he was going to TC?
He's just human like the rest of us.
Callis. I've always wondered why his son has an 'astrosaj' Twitter account btw, Anyone know?!?
Is McTaggart that bad? Arrogant? Dumbass? I've never heard that about him, but don't follow these things closely. In a word, "yes". Most of us at least acknowledge the fact that we are not perfect. McBraggart ignores his many bouts of foolishness and trumpets himself whenever his crazy predictions happen to turn out. Always in a hurry to be the first to tweet and never bothering to confirm facts.
True to an extent, but the fact that he is a smug, arrogant ass makes it easy to ignore the 'human' aspect...Whoa. I take it you've met the guy? Or had twitter arguments or something?

I have met and had beers with McTaggert several times. He is a good guy in my book, sorry if he doesn't answer enough twitter questions to please the masses.

I greatly appreciate all that you do, OSF. I'm hoping that they get German locked up soon. I haven't heard much of anything on the other high schoolers like Schick and Burke.
***Accordingly, the Astros are currently $1,662,240 below the 'penalty threshold' for the 2013 draft. [Be reminded also that only signing bonuses in excess of $100,000 county against bonus pool allocations - bonuses of less than $100,000 are not considered in bonus pool calculations.[/i]
Awesome work OSF.
Couple questions/comments. In the signed column, whats the difference between NO and - ? Is No someone that has made it clear they are not signing? Also on Brian Holberton, you have him as 800 under slot, when it should be 800 over.
Also, the Astros are 1.6 below their allotment, is there an % amount a team is required to pay out or is there only a penalty for going over?
Astros County with an update on Devonte German: LINK (http://www.astroscounty.com/2013/07/devonte-german-update.html)How many "stars" were next to German's name on that leaked Luhnow draft board photo? Seems odd that they haven't got him signed yet. And I still wonder if they've got something else up their sleeves, like a high-profile NDFA signing. It will not look good if they end up with a million bucks left unspent.
that leaked Luhnow draft board photo
leaked Luhnow draft board photo?
You mean the one Luhnow tweeted out?Yeah, "leaked" was a poor choice of words. Luhnow had it in the background of his profile photo and presumably didn't expect that it would/could be blown up and dissected and semi-decoded.

Tick... tick... one more day to sign non-senior draftees...
It appears that NDFAs (seniors or otherwise) can sign past the deadline as well.Yeah... it just doesn't seem likely to happen, to me. Seems like we would have heard some rumblings about it.
Callis via Twitter in response to a question from a Blue Jays fan about potential available bonus pool money:
Jim Callis @jimcallisBA
Yes. Deadline doesn't apply to NDFA. @JaysFanToronto: ... #BlueJays money can they offer it to HS kids who didn't get drafted? #mlbdraft
Yeah... it just doesn't seem likely to happen, to me. Seems like we would have heard some rumblings about it.
So, beyond German (assuming he even signs), where is their extra money going to go? Between trading away International cap space and the lack of splashy McCullers-esque machinations in this draft, the Astros are not making a good impression. If you're going to be so absurdly cheap with the Major League roster, you better damn well not go cheap when it comes to signing some good young amateur talent.
Couldn't the Astros offer 1.7 without a penalty?
Couldn't the Astros offer 1.7 without a penalty?
But what if they don't think he's worth that?
Did I read somewhere that they traded some of their pool space? That was for International signings. Amatuer Draft money/picks can't be traded.
OSF, when do you usually start the next year's draft thread?
