Disney buys LucasFilm, plans 3 more Star Wars films beginning in 2015. (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/disney-buy-lucasfilm-405-billion-384448)
-
Hell, I'm in.
-
The key is that Lucas appears to be giving up a lot of control. Hire good directors for the next three films and I'm there. Announce that the subtitle is "The Search for Jar Jar", and I'm out.
If I'm Guillermo Del Toro, Peter Jackson or Jon Favreau, I'm calling my agent already.
-
They couldn't be worse than the last 3...could they?

Yes they can. A lot worse.

It's the new New Hope.

It's the new New Hope.
"Grandpa Han, can you tell me how you ever found Grandma Leia attractive?"
"Two words: Gold bikini."

Yes they can. A lot worse.
Not having Lucas write/direct has to be an instant plus.

I hope Disney goes in an all-Ewok direction. Think of the marketing possibilities!

Disney is a shitbag of a company, but I'm sure they'll do a better job than Lucas did with the last 3 films.

The Twitterati have been having some fun. Scroll through these (https://twitter.com/search/star%20wars/grid/photos) for some real gems.

Wow. I haven't thought about it in a long time, but for some reason this reminds me of a rousing discussion thread in here a good while back, after someone contended that Walt Disney was, in fact, a Nazi. He made pretty compelling points to support it, too, as I recall. At least it seemed so - to me - at the time.
Off of the top of my head, I think the instigator was The Poster Formerly Known As Joey Trum. And if I'm wrong about that, RJ, I apologize in advance.

I think he called him a fascist for fueling the flames of McCarthyism and "naming names" before the house un-american activities committe, but not necessarily a Nazi.

Walt Disney was only mortal. It takes a special kind of evil (http://conservativenewager.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/obama-is-evil.jpg) to be a Nazi, fascist, socialist and communist all at the same time.

There's some evidence that ol' Walt was a Nazi sympathizer, and he definitely used the Red scare to bust up animators' unions. But I'm more referring to their habit of suing day cares with Mickey painted on the wall, and manipulating Congress to extend copyright until the sun burns out while taking all their major properties from the public domain.

I take back most of the shitty thoughts I've had about him. That's really terrific.

Good for him. Education is good but I still think the Star Wars movies are mostly crap.

I guess you guys haven't spent an evening watching the movies Disney made supporting the US war effort in WWII on youtube. Some amazing stuff.

Luke, Han & Leia may return in new trilogy (http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2012/nov/06/harrison-ford-star-wars-episode-7).

That...is fucking genius.
It really is. Drew McWeeny did a series of articles showin his kids the films in a similar order (but including Ep. 1) and it was just a brilliant read.
-
Unfortunately, Ep.1 has all the Darth Maul stuff who I thought was pretty cool.
I saw the first three back-to-back-to-back at the Paramount in Austin in 1991 back when people only vaguely remembered pop culture, so they were both familiar and pretty fresh. Best movie experience of my life.
-
'Machete Order' fails in 2 key ways:
1)Recommending that people watch ANY of the prequels.
2)Not actually having anything to do with the film 'Machete'.
-
Item two=He shoots, he SCORES!!!
-
http://static.nomachetejuggling.com/machete_order.html
Nice find. I enjoyed the read.
I read about someone that apparently took the prequels and re-edited into what viewers said was an outstanding stand-alone movie, but one that no one will ever see.

They're mentioned in the article.

Completely glossed over that.

Star Wars sequels to follow the Marvel comics structure of multiple parallel character development movies culminating in an ensemble effort. They are looking to release two or three movies a year (http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2012/nov/16/star-wars-rumours-lucasfilm-ambitious-plans).
The comment about the successful splitting of single episodes into multiple films is yet another example of life imitating The Onion (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=onion%20harry%20potter%20seven%20separate%20films&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CDAQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.theonion.com%2Fvideo%2Ffinal-minutes-of-last-harry-potter-movie-to-be-spl%2C20528%2F&ei=UmamUPbMOaqBygGqqYHwCA&usg=AFQjCNF040ipskUkpwKkEXxbTiht6EfKzA&sig2=_JqZUWeF6LAc_N3YzfatYg).

I could see that working very well.

I know. I (don't) have a bad feeling about this.

It's certainly a surefire cash cow, but I'm a bit unclear on how it's going to work. Are two movies going to be ancillary character developments and the third movie of the year an "Episode VII"?

Who knows. But they can do what they want.
Ep 7 could be an into to a whole host of spawn of Luke and Leia/Han, or a complete tangent, with others being brought in later.
The point being that the Marvel plan was simply to establish the characters in their current guise, then tease about a collaboration, and then do the collaboration (in the case of The Avengers, to very entertaining effect).
All of this is made easier by not calling Episode VII "Episode VII".

This is true.
But there's a massive amount of Star Wars books that are considered "canon" that fill in a lot of the backstory, and also continue the story for a few decades past A New Hope. And, surprisingly, they're quite good. Mostly.

I'm curious how close they'll stick to any of these. Lucas isn't exactly Tolkein, and while Peter Jackson did his fair share of "tweaking" his LOTR movies, they mostly stayed on track. I assume the Star Wars franchise is more conducive to deviations (I haven't read any of the books).

It might end up more analogous to HHGTTG than LOTR, where the radio show, tv show and books all offer somewhat different versions of roughly similar stories.
-
More likely it will be like the video games and "clone wars", where they just made up a bunch of stuff that looks cool and called it "Star Wars Stuff".

I think its fantastic. there's plenty of great characters and plot lines and I think the Avengers model would be fantastic for the series. I'd love to see a trilogy or so just focused on the bounty hunters. I'd also like to see the best directors and screenwriters taking lots of shots at the franchise like in the Alien films.

Lucas didn't write the books, people like Timothy Zahn, Kevin J. Anderson, Troy Denning etc did. So they're pretty well written.

Well we now know that JJ Abrams is going to direct Episode VII, which is great news.
Meanwhile, the Marvelisation of Star Wars is proceeding, with stand-alone solo films in the offing. The first being for Yoda (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/60757).

If Disney can pull this off even half as well as Marvel, it will be a good thing.

Episode VII: Breaking Vader (http://www.theguardian.com/film/2014/jan/23/star-wars-episode-7-carrie-fisher/print):
Recent reports suggest Episode VII has been retooled to centre on Skywalker, Leia and Han Solo. Abrams revealed at the weekend that the screenplay for his film is complete, and revealed talks had been held with Breaking Bad's Jesse Plemons over a role.
-
New alleged plot details for Episode VII. Spoiler Alert (http://www.theguardian.com/film/2014/jul/21/star-wars-episode-7-plot-details-suffer-unconfirmed-leak).
Unlike the Chronicle, the comments to Guardian articles is usually worth a read. In this case, there's everything from a discussion about the thickness of an atmosphere, to pop culture references to masturbation jokes. You will likely feel quite at home, therefore.
-
Just to bring this back into focus, the second trailer for Episode VII is out (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngElkyQ6Rhs), and it's awesome. There's a shout out to all of the surviving protagonists from Episode VI, a little Vader sprinkled in for good measure and a flying fist-pump of a payoff at the end.

Alec Guiness, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson (does N. Ireland count as a Brit?).
That's a pretty fair representation of the Empire on the light side of the force. Hell, even the Ewoks were all Brits.

Good point (Kenny Baker is a Brit too).
Still, the Death Star was all Brits and Vader (body) was a Brit too. So were Palpatine / Sidious and Count Dooku.
* Northern Ireland is Irish, but part of the UK. Britain is the island. This explanation can only be given in writing.

See also, facing down a TIE fighter. Great trailer.

The right hook with a bazooka to a AT-AT's left cheek was another good moment. I fully realize all things Star Wars turn me back in to my nerdy teenage self.... Can't help it.

While waiting for VIII to come out, I thought I'd share this for you good folks to enjoy on a Friday:
People are describing their sex life using only Star Wars quotes (http://www.thepoke.co.uk/2017/04/20/describing-your-love-life-using-star-wars-quotes/)
There are some amazing lines of Lucas dialogue for this. I have been giggling uncontrollably at this one for about an hour now:
"Gotta problem here."
"Pull out!"
"No, I can hold it."
"Pull out!"
"Arrrgh!"
Also: "Luke, at that speed, will you be able to pull out in time?"
Or: "There's a small thermal exhaust port just below the main port..."
Plus: "Get in there dummy! I don't care what you smell!"
And: "Just me, the boy, the two droids...and no questions asked!"
Of course: "I have a bad feeling about this."
Have at it.

You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought.

Even I get boarded sometimes. Do you think I had a choice?

Let go...
Away put your weapon...

Uh, everything's under control. Situation normal.
What happened?
Uh, we had a slight weapons malfunction
-
Your powers are weak, old man.
-
"And I thought they smelled bad on the OUTSIDE!"
-
"No, I won't wear a metal bikini to bed, you freak. I'm leaving!"
Oh wait. That wasn't from Star Wars.
-
"NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
-
All of these are better than any "romantic" dialogue from Attack of the Clones.

You will be required to manoever along this trench...
It'll be just like Beggar's Canyon back home.
Get clear, Wedge. You can't do any more good back there.
I'm going in. Cover me, Porkins!

"A long time ago..."
That's about all the Star Wars I remember.

Are we still talking about sex?

Anyone seen The Mandalorian yet? The reviews are consistently good enough that I am considering buying a Disney+ subscription although I don't know if I should do that and start watching now weekly or just binge at the end of the season.

Yep, it's very good so far, and you also get the entire star wars saga in 4K Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos. Well, minus The Last Jedi, which will be added 1st of January when Netflix loses the streaming rights.
Maclunkey!

I'm waiting for a few more eps to be released better I launch into The Mandolorian.

As I've said before elsewhere, if Disney would un-fuck the OT, I would buy a lifetime subscription.
